This comedy routine is over 30 years old, but it's as fresh, no FRESHER, than most of today's comedy which feels either stale or silly before it's even served. Where the hell IS Rita Rudner today? She's by far one of the best ever to be a comic. She is so-so good at playing a ditz and sounding so brilliantly funny, quirky, and original. LOVED IT!
Yeah, she is something else! Super dry but silly humour that doesn't insult your intelligence. I was 18 when this showed and just LOVED her! In some respects, she's a bit anti-comedian at a time when profanity was a driving force in comedy. She's fun, never stops smiling and she writes great material for herself. What a treasure.
I met you at Disney you were gracious enough to entertain me with your humor for 20 minutes thank you it was some 20 years ago but you’ve always been one of the funniest Wholesome comedian thank you
Very funny, excellent delivery, witty, beautiful. Oh and she didn't have to say 'cunt' or something nasty. Women comics of today should watch and re-watch this and take notes until they have a tight five that's even half as good as this Rita special.
Rita is among the top five stand-up comedians of all time: yes, all time, and NO hype, and that is huge since she didn't swear (many love cursing and obscenity in stand-up comedy) and proved she was amazingly funny without it.
I met Rita last week at a book signing after her act at Century Village. She let us take photos with her. I became so star-struck that I forgot to ask her to sign my copy of her new book. The stage hand went to her dressing room and had her sign it for me. I mentioned a joke of hers that I like. She remembered it. I hope she includes it in her act again. I have seen her three times at Century Village in Pembroke Pines. She updated her act to talk about modern technology and it works well with the audience. I will see her again next time.
Classy Woman that really knows how to exude her female essence in her comedy so many female comedians try to be butch and overtly feminist Rita is a beautiful classy Lady and shes hilarious.
I discovered both of these ladies after reading a book called ''The Funniest Thing you Never Said.'' Its a compilation of funny quotes and both names had many entries
What talented comedians around today ? Very very fee. Not sure what happened to Dave Chappelle, hope he's healthy & happy, he's the greatest comedian in the world today.
@@ITILII Dave Chappelle is alive & (seems to be) well. I certainly don't know him in person, but I suggest you Google him or type his name into RUclips or basically anything and you'll find out where he's been for the last 10 years very easily.
A master of observational humor delivered in such a soothing manner that surprises one with the unexpected "oh yeah" moment of realization. BRILLIANT! AND out of a truly beautiful woman. Thanks for sharing your gift of comedy!
"Once you pierce your nose, nobody will ever listen to what you have to say again." Rita didn't know she was prophetic about the cultural rot of our society 32 years later.
I was 22 years old when this came out and it has stuck with me ever since then. I thought she was the funniest person. The part about the dog and the alarm clock was what I remembered all these years. So glad to see this again. Hilarious!
Her writing is what gets me. The stunning looks and perfect delivery is legend, but her writing is so clever. Everyday things - vacuum cleaners, husbands and cats that turn into such truthful farce. Love Rita.
Rita Rudner is one of my heroes. She's very much like Steven Wright in her approach, and a very beautiful woman as well. And I love the way she uses her beauty, her eyes, her voice : really well-honed comedic chops. Bravo, Rita Rudner! Probably the best under appreciated comic of all time.
Your comments nailed it! This woman is a genius! We all have insights/observations like hers, but she weaves them together like a master. Sooooo under appreciated!!!
Cant agree more. It takes talent to serve up quality comedy without cursing every other word. Her delivery, much like Steven Wright's, is hard to pull off so solemly or straight faced. In today's climate, her "clean" spin on basic human truths places her far above the 4-letter word routines of the lesser talents. And yes, she is a beautiful woman.
Can't believe a Family Guy episode is what introduced me to this legend!! Amy Schumer could learn a thing or 2 (or 8)!!! (Family Guy S2E16 about 6:17 into the episode)
In my opinion, her genius is that, in fact, she is commenting on sexism and (gender) politics, women's issues, and social expectations with subtle little funnies.
Yeah because during the decades past we had no Bill Hicks, Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Shecky Green, Lenny Bruce... the list is long of the great ones who joked about politics, race, religion, ethnicities, used profanity, vulgarity, talked about sexism etc, ALTHOUGH there were others who didn't, such as Don Rickles, Bill Cosby and others. All I'm saying is, that these "TABOO" topics with comedians has been around for a very long time. There's really nothing new. They even had dirty lyrics in comedy blues songs in the 1920s and 1930s such as "peaches and pie" ... Those themes are practically ancient. I do think that it is quite an ART to make people laugh WITHOUT those sometimes controversial themes, so I hear what you're saying.
I've discovered her again after so many years! Always remembered her joke about womenswear-" shoulder pad build up! " when every item had the little pads!
RMPsumma Two different ladies. Two different styles of comedy and humor whose humor styles will be entertaining, not necessarily, to everyone. I think their goals, any comedian for that matter, is to have their audiences leaving their individual performances smiling. I'm of the thought that the risk in drawing comparisons of comedians is that one has to be elevated at the expense of denigrating the other. Other and similar "clean" comparisons have been drawn on Pryor and "Flip". At the risk of generalizing, comedians are more admiring of each other's talent, rather than being judgemental of one another, because they know how hard each has worked at their craft.
I’m 16 and I love Rita Rudner, she’s probably my favorite stand up comedian. Having said that, I’m not going to be judgmental and put down modern comics like Amy Schumer and Louis C.K. who I also love just as much. Seriously guys, Rita’s not some relic of some nonexistent lost superior golden generation; she’s just good.
thesimsloverish You express yourself as if you are on "old soul" with a lot of common sense. You come across more as the grownup in the group than many who have commented at this video. Two thumbs to you.
Rita Rudner is one of my favorite comics, because she's funny without having to be crass. So many comedians just swear their heads off and call that humor; I honestly don't understand it.
You don't understand blue comedy, or you just don't like it? Blue doesn't always equal bad. It's subjective. There's a difference between comics who use curse words as a tool, and comics who use them as a crutch.
@@annfraley7083 Respectfully, I'll have to disagree with you on comedians that "just devolve into the latter." Not saying it hasn't happened, but I'm not aware of any instances. There are comedians whose blue, sexually suggestive, crass etc humor appeals to an audience, a [non main stream]following that enjoyed the likes of Bernie Mac, Flip Wilson, Joan Rivers, Craig Ferguson They went mainstream and found a new or different following by making adjustments that would allow for a wider appeal and maybe in the process, greater exposure and income. If any of them went back "on the road", it wasn't about devolving, but more about them getting back to doing what they liked to do, their bread and butter. "Blue" humor, to me, is like spicey food. It is not palatable to everyone and that's okay. Isn't that what freedom of choicesis all about?
Yes! Haha, I wanted to make a comment like this. Class & wit. I wish we could have Rita instead, now. There's just no comparison. Original & talented. Not like what we've got now.
Her technique is so impeccable, so precise. She's not the only one, but her self-knowledge and awareness of what her face is doing and how that can be used to land the joke, it's super impressive.
She has long been one of the greats. I put her up there with Carlin, Steven Wright and a handful of others whose names escape me at the moment. Her delivery, writing and timing is impeccable.
I am so glad, she is a rare gem, and she is one of the very few who does not think that swearing makes it funny. I love that her shows are free of foul language it is hard to find comedy without swearing and sexual jokes. Thank you for uploading her shows.

LOVE HER! There are some female comedians today that could learn a thing or two about being funny from Ms. Rudner and Paula Poundstone.
Had they been able to learn things, they would have been better comedians already.

She's the greatest....she delivers each joke effortlessly.
Only a 30-minute special? Things were really different in the '80s.
Just watched her 2017 special on Pluto TV. It was great.
