Gary I stumbled upon your channel trying to diagnose my softener... that was weeks ago. Yet I still keep coming back to keep learning more!! Awesome channel subscribed!
Thanks for the explanation. I thought my new whirlpool whes40 was defective because of a very very low water level in the brine tank. Now I understand why.
Many videos describe how there are many factors to consider when determining how much water is supposed to be in the brine tank (or not). None I have found explain how the water is supposed to get into the tank in the first place either pre or post. No matter what the cycle, on my Clack, water never enters the tank. My tank remains dry throughout the entire cycle, its surely will extract brine, but only if I manually put water into the tank first. I've checked the float valve and it appears to work, I've quadruple checked my fitting and run my tank without salt (there is no salt bridge) to confirm it, no water enters the tank. What could it be?
A pre fill water softener adds water as the first cycle during regeneration. Post fill add water as the last cycle. I would check your water softener programming against what I recommend in this video ruclips.net/user/livec6r7qUK8to4
Hi Gary, you are the most credible and thorough voice on water softeners that I've been able to find and I appreciate all your videos. I need some guidance. Our family just moved into a new house and we have a pretty old (1998-99 from what I can gather) softener unit. I understand how water softeners in general work but I really don't know what I'm doing. I could provide some more details about the unit, but I guess my main questions are: 1) There appears to be some kind of salt in the brine well (inside the brine tank), filled to the top. Is this normal? 2) When we moved in, there was always about an inch of water above the salt level or it was about even. Last night I ran a manual recharge and as of 14hrs later, there appears to be no visible water in the brine tank. Is this a problem? 3) I'm tempted to just start fresh, pull everything out of the brine tank, run some iron out through, and see what happens. Should I do this? Thanks for your time. Any insight or advice would be much appreciated. Our house is well-water fed if that matters. Please help us!
Hello, thank you for the questions 1) No, there should be absolutely no salt in the brine well whatsoever. 2) Yes it is. 3) You can but just clearing the salt out of brine well and making sure the float is freed up should work.

Hi Gary, I watched several of your videos but none of them describe what causes is there not to be enough water in the brine tank my system is a BNT650T which sucks out the water but will not fill the water back in. Do you have any suggestions?
We bought a house with the WaterBoss 900 softener included. I've never had a water softener before. Now it's been 2 full months and I haven't added anything yet. I just noticed that the water level is low and above some leftover salt pellets. I bought a 40lb salt pellet bag to add to the brine tank. How much salt should I add to my WaterBoss 900?
My question is: If you don't refill the salt tank, will the salt go all the way down to empty?? I ask this, because, I actually WANT it to happen, so I can put a resin cleaning agent in, and run a manual cycle to clean the beads. It seems to remain about 1/5ths full.
That is likely an iron filter and the purple stuff is Potassium Permanganate, old school technology at its worst. I suggest replacing it with a chemical free iron filter like one of these. waterestore.com/search?type=product&q=hum+fok+iron+filter
I am confused. You said (at 2:59) that "in this case it will use 9 pounds of salt per regeneration". A bag of salt is 40 pounds. Does that mean that you should roughly expect to put in a bag of salt in after every 4 regenerations? Also - I just had a brand new BWS softener installed and the plumber left it set at the default hardness of 20. (In fact he left all the settings at the default.) I tested the water with Hach hardness strips and it looks to me like the hardness of the "softened" water is 25 or so. Should I increase the water softener setting another 25 to a setting of 45 now to try to get it down to 0? I can not get the plumber to return my calls after paying him, so I'm on my own!!
Yes, this type of water softener will consume about one 40 lb bag after 4 regenerations. Typically the brine tank will hold several bags of salt. Sad storey about your plumbers service. The settings are based on the water before the water softener. Test the raw water and set the water softener based on it's hardness.
My water softener is not putting water in the tank. I just bought the home and had to clear out a pretty serious salt bridge. Any idea why water wouldn't be coming in?
Great videos. The control valve on the top of my media tank vibrates and hums each time the toilet flushes or a faucet is turned on low pressure. Any suggestions?
Hello Gary, this is my first home that has a well and septic. So a lot of it is new to me. I was informed by some neighbors that the water in my area is hard, which is why I have a water softener. So a couple months ago, the salt container ( by the way, I have a separate softener and brine tank), was about half full, and the water level in it was just about even with the salt. Checking it the other day, I noticed the tank is just about empty. Also noticed debris in the tank ( probably from dirty salt pellets). I would like to take my salt tank outside and rinse it out before I add more salt. My question is how much salt do I add to the tank (about half full?), and would I add water to it after adding the salt? Thank you for your help.
This video will help you to determine how much salt you should have in your water softener. ruclips.net/user/shortsPZaK-fVWyQA After cleaning, add enough salt to 1/2 fill the brine tank, add enough water to be at the same level os the salt and set it to regenerate.
Depends. If it is a pre fill water softener, thne no. If it is a post fill water softener then, yes. This video explains the difference. ruclips.net/video/GedMruLfXhY/видео.html
Hi there, Gary! how are you? I have the following question: what would happen if I add more salt than needed? for example if my softener uses 40 pound per regeneration and I add two 40 pounds salt bags on the brine tank at once. I understand all the salt on the brine tank will dissolve after 12 hours approximately. I'm interested on hearing what you have to say about it. regards!. by the way I use five buttons clack valves like the one on your back on the video.
I have watched all these demos and did them all yet none have helped my situation. I have the kenmore ultra soft 150 basically Im down to manually bailing out water of tank. Never had this much water before. Checked and changed the venturi and gasket twice. Water is going out the overflow but not nearly enough as water keeps rising in my tank.
My problem is that every 7 days when the backwash runs, too much water is leaving the tube and my drain can't handle it so my mechanical room floods. I noticed I had about 2 inches of water above my salt in my brine tank was about 3/4 full of salt. So I've completely bucketed out all salt from the brine tank and will just add 1 bag to start. It's just me living in the house. Do you think this will fix the problem or is it something else. I've scheduled service but they can't get to my place for a month. I actually have 2 tanks, once specifically for iron and that's the one that the water is gushing out of to the drain.
Hi Gary, I have a 60,000 grain softener with a 2 cubic ft resin bed, documents say I should use 20 lbs salt per regen, I have confirmed the salt setting in the clack ws1 control is correct. I am confused why the refill cycle adds 9 to 9-1/2 gallons of water to the brine tank, shouldn't this be more like 6-1/2 gallons being that a gallon of water absorbs 3 lbs of salt?
Gary, I took the brine line and put it in a bucket and measured the water delivered in the refill cycle. I'm not sure how to identify or choose the correct brine line flow control, the one I have in has the number "79" on the black washer. I noticed that there is a red rubber part with wings, looks like it might be a check valve, might this be allowing water through if it is worn out?
Gary, Do I add the water to the brine tank or does the system add it automatically? Mine has to be replaced so I'm not sure whether to add water thanks.
I know this is an older video but I’m hoping you can help! My husband had turned off the water to the house to do a repair and when it was turned back on, the water softener sprung a leak. He has since repaired it and we restarted the water softener, but I wasn’t sure if I should add more water to the brine tank when we do the regeneration? I’ve never been able to see water in the tank nor can I now and I inserted a broom handle down in the tank to confirm there is water down there. Thoughts? Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Hi Gary. Im stumped!! I have too much water in my Waterboss 950…almost to the top. I have watched all of your videos and followed the Troublshooting suggestions in the owners manual to no avail. I have competed the follow… removed and fully cleaned the injector assembly, removed and fully cleaned the brine valve assembly, checked and cleaned the air check/ draw tube, and confirmed that the drain is unobstructed and working. After cleaning, During regeneration i observe the following…water level was static during cycle 1(first back wash), water level increased in tank during cycle 2 (brine/ slow rinse), water level stayed static during 2nd backwash (cycle 3), water level i creased again during cycle 4 (brine refill). By the end of the regeneration cycles, the brine tank was full of water and the emergency shutoff kicked in. Any idea what the issue is and why the tank continues to fill and why water level never drops?? Much appreciated!
The problem is it isn’t drawing brine in the brine cycle. Did you reinstall the old injector or replace with a new one? The manufacturer always recommends replacement.
Thanks for your quick reply Gary. Yes, i just reinstalled the old injector. I will order a new one and give if a try. Ill report back once complete. Cheers
Gary. I replaced the injector assembly with all new parts and water level has not dropped. I have just removed the air tube assembly and tested the ball in the cage at the base of the assembly. The ball moves freely in the cage but when i immerse the ball and cage in a clear glass of water, the ball does not float to the top of the cage. Is this normal, should it float, or is the ball potentially damaged and therefore affecting the final cycle of the regeneration? Still stumped. Thx
Problem solved…i replaced the entire safety shutoff assembly. Turns out that the ball in in the cage at the bottom of the aircheck had developed a crack and stopped floating in the cage as the water level rose in the tank… never unseating from the underlying port.
Hey Gary, i have a Manual water softener, Wondering how much salt and water should I add to the brine tank. Currently, I'm regenerating with 22 pounds of salt with 21 gallons of water every 3 days
I really do not know. You need to check with the manufacturer and they will need to know your water softener size, your water hardness and how much water you use daily.
I just Installed a aquasure water softener and my brine tank is about 12 feet away from the resin tank. Can I get a 12 foot tube and still work correctly? Thanks.
Hi Gary! If I force a regen everything works as normal but it seems during the auto regen the water in the brine tank doesn’t like to refill. Any tips? -Kyle
I have a Kenmore UltraSoft 800 Model 625.75190 water softener. Lately I have noticed that the salt level is decreasing rapidly. What would be the issue that I am now having to add 2 bags (44 lb. bags each) every week?
If it is a metered water softener you may have a leak somewhere, like a toilet. since more water is being used (due to the leak) the water softener regenrates more often and uses more salt.
I have a Marlo 45,000 Grain Softener which has a pretty sizeable brine tank. With about 60 lbs of salt or so in the brine tank the water usually sits about 1" or so above the top of the salt. It is brand new, is this what it should look like? Thanks
@@GarytheWaterGuy Thank you! One more question... how critical is it that the unit & brine tank be perfectly plumb and level? The water level inside the tank should ne about 1/3 full but it can vary. The water level (actaully the brine level) should drop slowly during the brine cycle. If not you need to check out the advice in this video ruclips.net/video/ZdA0aI1q22w/видео.html

Hi Gary, just finished watching your video on the water level in the brine tank. Is there a particular level that that the water should be? Mine is currently 14" from the bottom and the salt level is 1" below that. There's a water mark on the tank which tells me that the water stays at the same level all the time. Can the float be adjusted to lower the level of the water or is that level of water OK?
The water softener determines the water level in the brine tank. The float is only used for if the water softener malfuntions to keep the brine tank from over filling.
I have a Culligan salt system soft water, purchased 5 years ago. 1 year after purchase my water heater started leaking. Well it was 17 years old so didn’t think too much about it but did notice just after water softener. A new commercial grade, 50 gal tank installed. 4 years later tank completely rusted and leaking. Plumber said it’s the salt. Culligan says it’s the chlorine in the water. I do have high chlorine level. So I’m not sure what to do. Is it the salt or chlorine? Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

I put in 3 bags which comes up to almost 3/4 to top and it worked awesome all my problems went away. It's been 4-5 months and water is slightly orange. I set my settings to auto degen. every 4 days around 2am but I don't think enough salt goes in the brine tank to clean out because out of those 3 bags I only used up about 1 bag so far from original. Am I doing something wrong? I need help Gary😫. I have water in my tank I look down the white tube and I see about 6" water
Any idea why mine is filling up between cycles and going through salt super quick? If I run a recharge cycle it will properly drain. I checked the connections for clogs etc but everything seems to be good.

You might have a prefill softener, in which case that would be normal ruclips.net/video/GedMruLfXhY/видео.html
Great videos. The control valve on the top of my media tank vibrates and hums each time the toilet flushes or a faucet is turned on low pressure. Any suggestions?
There’s likely an obstruction in the connectors
Thank you, very helpful
Glad it was helpful! Please share with friends and family.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Gary, will a reverse osmosis whole house filtration system filter out the salt after the water softener? Thanks
At minutre 1:26 you said they should have no salt in them whatsoever. I think you meant water, right?
Yup
Hi my question is
My salt tank
Supuse should be water in or not
Depends how much water is in with the salt. One gallon of water will only absorb 3 lbs of salt, no matter how much you put in there.
@@GarytheWaterGuy thanks, gary for your answer👏. Very informative
Did you try the suggestions from this video? ruclips.net/video/ZdA0aI1q22w/видео.html
It sounds like a clogged drain to me. I would unclog the drain and try it again.
That's what I'm thinking. Thanks for getting back to me.
Gary. I get water in my lines every time my system regenerates. How can I fix this? Installer has been no help.
Why is that a problem?
That’s a big help. Thank you.
Yes, make sense. How do you know it is adding 9-9 1/2 gallons? If it really is maybe you have the incorrect brine line flow control installed.
The water softener adds water automatically.
If in doubt add a couple of gallons of water. After it regenerates the water softener nwill add the correct amount of water.
Thx
Also, there is a high pitched squeal during stage 1 regeneration…any idea what this indicates? Many thanks
One gallon of water dissolves 3 lbs. of salt
I just Installed a aquasure water softener and my brine tank is about 12 feet away from the resin tank. Can I get a 12 foot tube and still work correctly? Thanks.
Yes you can
Hi Gary! If I force a regen everything works as normal but it seems during the auto regen the water in the brine tank doesn’t like to refill. Any tips?
-Kyle
No, I can't think of any reason why the manual regeneration would result in something differtent than the automatic regeneration.
Hey Gary,
Water comes out of my brine line during the brine draw cycle. Do you know what this could mean? Thank you.
Yes, the valve needs to be rebuilt. We have the kits here waterestore.com/search?q=clack%20rebuild
@@GarytheWaterGuy thank you
I have a Marlo 45,000 Grain Softener which has a pretty sizeable brine tank. With about 60 lbs of salt or so in the brine tank the water usually sits about 1" or so above the top of the salt. It is brand new, is this what it should look like? Thanks
yes, that sounds about right.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Thank you! One more question... how critical is it that the unit & brine tank be perfectly plumb and level? The pad the softener is on is a little out of level, not a ton but slightly. Sorry for the newbie questions. You said in some of your videos people could send you a water sample for analysis, could I do that from the states? I am more than happy to pay for it. Do you have an email I could send a note to directly? Thanks again!
I have a whirlpool water softener whes40e, I filled to the 1 line with salt pellets, water's been staying at a the 3 mark after recharges. Curious if you'd know if this was a good water level...I just cleared a bridge and hoping everything's in it's place before I fill with additional salt, thx

So it’s okay if we have one that looks like the black lower efficiency softener on the right of the screen if the salt is filled about 2/3 - 3/4 high and we can’t see any water? Thanks!
Yes, you are correct.
I have a 380 and it does not display the gallons available to be treated and my unit has tons of water in it. It makes out the float. What could be wrong?

Please help: We have the NuGen Pure Water System Fusion XT-90, how much water should be in our brine tank. I also watched and the brine tank water level never changes during regeneration. Is that normal?
The water level inside the tank should ne about 1/3 full but it can vary. The water level (actaully the brine level) should drop slowly during the brine cycle. If not you need to check out the advice in this video ruclips.net/video/ZdA0aI1q22w/видео.html
I think you miss spoke at 1:28. I think you meant to say water and not salt.
Good catch! Yes, you are correct!
@@GarytheWaterGuy thanks for the info. I don’t know anything about water softeners and I was wondering why I never see water in my brine tank. Thanks again.
Sound needs work, loud then soft, again and again. Spent more time adjusting volume.
Noted! Will be more vigilant with sound volume.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Thank you. So I can program the water softener to lower the level in the brine tank?
Hi how do I reset a fleck 5000Al0SXT

Sorry I do not know muc about Fleck valves.
Thanks!
Did they test your water to see if the mineral content from the salt was abnormally high? Is the water softener set correctly for your waters hardness?
Hi Gary love your videos. I have a well system and my iron is high. I bought a softner to lower the hardness and to or try to eliminate the iron. Its a sxt 5600 and I use iron salt in tank. I have water in my tank I look down the white tube and I see about 6" water
you need to know your hardness and iron levels in ppm and gpg to set it properly. Thsi video will help ruclips.net/video/5j3wXccdC4c/видео.html
@@GarytheWaterGuy thank you so much. Love your videos
Is there a filter tank for the iron installed before the softener?
Any idea why mine is filling up between cycles and going through salt super quick? If I run a recharge cycle it will properly drain. I checked the connections for clogs etc but everything seems to be good.
Check out this video, it should help you and make sure all of the settings are correct ruclips.net/video/Zikmilf_Tu0/видео.html
1:27 I think you mean "...no WATER whatsoever..."

I don't hear any audio issues. What issues are you noticing?
'no salt in them what so ever' - you mean water?
Yes, I mispoke
@@GarytheWaterGuy kk, just making sure, not being hyper critical. Just having softener issues and want to be sure.

One tip from experience. Don’t buy a water boss.
Why is that? I would like to know your experience with the brand.
@@GarytheWaterGuy I’ve been in the water treatment industry for over 30 years and have replaced dozens, more than l can count , water boss units. At a price under $400 , you get what you pay for. It’s all about the valve. Culligan, Fleck, and Hellenbrand are top of the line. Water boss has its place. Mobil homes, kitchens and places with limited space.
@@jrm2383 I used a unit from Culligan, it worked for about 3 years, then sprung a leak where the valving goes into the media tank. Resulted in a nasty cleanup & damage.
I said screw renting, bought a Waterboss 700...it’s been plugging along trouble free since 2007, around 14 years now.
Wow... Learned absolutely nothing....
