Stunning video of wolf pack traveling on beach in Northern Minnesota

  • Definitely the coolest footage of a wolf pack traveling together that we have ever captured! What makes it even better is that this pack (the Shoepack Lake Pack) is one of the most remote and elusive packs we study. It is quite a challenge to get footage of individual wolves from this pack let alone the entire pack traveling together! All this to say, we were absolutely elated when we first saw this footage a few weeks ago...the footage is from late October 2020 but we just swapped SD cards for this camera in late January. We are interested to see if the pack remains 7 strong throughout the winter!

      @@alyssahansen1400 Because the tail ends in a black tip, we know it wasn't a longer tail that got bitten off. If it had been longer and then bitten off, there wouldn't be a black tip. The wolf was born that way!
      Occasionally you'll see wolves with weird variations like that. I have pictures somewhere of a wolf (captive wolf in Wolf Park, Indiana) who had an unusually short muzzle, like half the normal length.
      There was even a wild wolf found (dead, unfortunately) that was a hermaphrodite.

      Very cool! I noticed the tail pattern to but didn't end up putting it in my comment because I wasn't sure if it was a rule that the markings had to be like that or if the black could be higher up.
      I figure these kinds of things are probably the equivalent of variations in proportion in humans as well. For example some people have bigger feet, longer arms, shorter torsos, fissured tongues, etc...

      @userjames2009 3 года назад +3

      @@alyssahansen1400 If you'll notice, all the wolves (when they're facing away from the camera) also have a small black spot 1/3 of the way down their tail, called the subcaudal gland. The wolf with a short tail also has a small black spot 1/3 of the way down its tail. But its tail is so proportionally short that black spot is up rather high because all the features of the tail have been shortened.
      0:36 subcaudal gland on normal tail is visible
      0:59 subcaudal gland on short tail is visible

    They are simply very intelligent. To watch a pack of them chase a mother doe and her yearlings on to the ice with no snow cover for the deer to have traction and kill all 3 of them for dinner was something to see. They work together amazing to stay alive and hunt for food did feel pretty terrible for the deer though they wiped out the hole little family and was eating them before they were even died

      I can’t answer for sure but most likely to gauge the distance of something they see. Moving the head makes an object’s placement in space more obvious.
