As Canadians we escape the East Coast winters by going to Varadero. Have only driven through Matanzas on our way to Havana, La Habana. We do this our second Cuban home and beautiful island people. Cannot wait to return!

Hopefully we can get back to visiting Cuba later this year - in the fall, perhaps.🙏 You've been there many times? Your comment about only driving through Matanzas is interesting - that was my only experience as well, up until May 2014 when I decided I wanted a different type of trip. I decided to start in Matanzas because I'd seen it from the tour bus on the way to Havana from Varadero (we Canadians love our resorts!) and thought it looked interesting.

@@localincuba9363 Drove through on the Jeep excursion, one year, on way to a ranch. Numerous trips to Havana, often thought about having a tour of Matanzas. It looks very interesting and off the normal tourist route. We have met tour guides from there. We are hoping to get in fall as well, when we are allowed to go will be first on plane!

@@drost582 Yes, you're right - Matanzas is definitely not touristy at all. It's a great place to sink in a little more and experience local Cuban life. I have some videos planned re: things to do there, which I'll be posting soon. I hope you enjoy! K

Hello! Thanks for the video! I’m going there Dec 21! First time to Cuba! Are there nice beaches in Matanzas as well? Or would I need to travel a ways out to get to them?
    Thanks!

Hi Dominik - thanks for watching! The quick answer is - yes and no. There is a small sandy beach right in town - Playa Tenis - very popular with locals (not in December, of course) but it may or may not be clear at the moment. I swam there on my first trip to Matanzas, it was May and it was beautiful. There are small inlets around the rocky coastline where the water is crystalline (Playa Buey Vaca), also popular with locals. Playa Coral is just outside the city going east towards Varadero, it's popular for snorkelling but again - more rocky than sandy. Of course the best beach is just up the highway a little in Varadero. If you aim for a spot between Calle 43 and 45, somewhere around there, it's a nice place to park yourself, and there is a cantina close by with beverages, snacks and washrooms. I hope you have a great trip - are you staying in a casa? I'd love to hear how everything goes. K
