  • This video is a real world review of the Mountain Equipment Garwahl Goretex Paclite Jacket.
    I bought it a couple of months ago, and gave it a test in very wet conditions on the South Downs ridge, and on a walk up Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons.

      Thanks Tony 👍. I think your jacket is the Lhotse model, is that right ? I have my eye on that for winter time to replace my 15 year old 3 layer goretex jacket.

    Hi John a very informative video of a jacket I was looking at purchasing as I am a big fan of Mountain equipment and have 3 of their down jackets plus other clothing. But I was in a shop in Betws y coed and eventually bought a Patagonia Torrentshell L3 H2NO jacket which so far I am pleased with and may do a review on it later. But a great video which you tested and explained really well, great job 👍 thanks for sharing

    I love mountain equipment gear, i used the same paclite jacket for a while but it ended up failing and the material leaked through. For the money i paid for the jacket i should have got alot more use out of it before it failed on me, about a year so not very durable. I don't rate paclite from my experience. Used in light and extremely heavy rain.It was a nice looking jacket, i almost went for the rupal, and wish i'd bought that instead of the garwhal.
    A great video with in depth detail, i enjoyed watching this. Good views for sure on your hike. Brilliant. 👍👍

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  2 года назад

      Funnily enough I have my eye on the Rupal as a heavier duty jacket for the winter, and when carrying a heavy pack.
      Thanks for watching this one, much appreciated 👍

    Very thorough and helpful review Jon 👏 Shame they don’t make them in Milky Way print… I think Garwhal are missing a trick there 😁

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  2 года назад +1

      🤣🤣🤣 I actually liked the jacket so much that I also bought the bright orange version for in the winter in the snow. Mountain Equipment do some of their jackets in a colour called Cosmos though, which is near enough Milky Way 🤣

      @@thecampingastronomer8554 Lol… I like the blue sky colour, but I thought it’s not very stealthy in the UK 🇬🇧: not much in the way of blue skies/ seas… and now you tell me you’ve plumped for a bright orange one 🤣. Not a lot of orange groves here either 😉. Just pulling your leg… it’s a smart move for winter walks, especially since the Brecon Beacons are an 8 hour round trip for you 🥶

    Great review mate. Im torn between this jacket and the makalu

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  7 месяцев назад

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
      The Makalu is a very good jacket, and I saw a good review of it in Trail magazine recently.
      The Garwhal is a 2.5 layer Goretex, whereas the Makalu is a 3 layer jacket. In theory this should make the Makalu a little bit more breathable I think. In addition, the Makalu has a 75 denier outer fabric, which makes it quite a lot more robust than the Garwhal.
      However, the Garwhal is a lot cheaper, and is also lighter. I liked my blue one so much, I bought an orange one to use in winter.
      I think that if you do a lot of walking with a heavy pack, then the more robust Makalu should last longer.
      For me, I am not out hiking every weekend, so the lighter and cheaper Garwhal suits fine.
      Either way, you can't really go far wrong.

    • @jap9656
      @jap9656 7 месяцев назад +1

      Lovely stuff. I think I'll probably go for the makalu as I'm out on long hikes 2/3 days a week with a fairly heavy pack. Never had a mountain equipment jacket so very excited to try it out. Thanks again mate all the best 👍

      The "Saltoro" seems to be the perfect balance between durability and comfort/lightness, 2.5 layer gore tex paclite with 3 layer 75D gore on the shoulders and hip for carrying backpacks.

      Thank you for watching Tetsuya. I used 2 different microphones for this. The one used I'm the rain on the South Downs, and on the indoor footage was a cheap one from Amazon, and was connected to my mobile phone. This usually does quite a good job, although the very wet weather caused it some problems. The one used for the footage in the Brecon Beacons is a Rode microphone, and was connected to a Canon G7X camera.

    Hi, is there a way to stow away the hood when it’s not raining? I’ve had this jacket a while but can’t seem to get the right fit. Thank you

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  2 года назад +1

      Hi, thanks for watching. As far I can see the hood does not stow away. Hood fit is best tuned by using the two toggles at the front, and the one on the back of the head too synch it round your face and hold it tight to your head.

    I've got this but not didn't get any sepetate pouch to pack it away should I have got to be or does it pack into one of the pockets?

    • @thecampingastronomer8554
      @thecampingastronomer8554  Год назад

      I don't think you getting a packing pouch with this jacket, and there doesn't appear to be any mention of one on any of the websites I've looked at. I have not tried to pack mine in one of the pockets, although this might be possible. However, I don't think this jacket is intended to be like a pack-a-mac. The Paclite name refers to the weight of the jacket I suspect.
      Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment.
