    During the Heresy, those guys hold their own like champs, basically saving the whole Horus alliance from collapse until the last moment, while the Death Guard was playing in the warp, World Eaters were chopping some civilians in a random moon and and Emperor's Children... well.
    The Warmaster knew that, and I don't think he lied when he told Perturabo, during the Siege of Terra, that he was his most valuable ally.

    Explains the real reason why they hate the Imperial Fists so much. It’s not about being the best at breaking sieges or defending them. Both sides endure much in sieges. The Iron Warriors mentally broke here and the Imperial Fists are a constant reminder of their failure. A shining example of a legion that didn’t fail the same mental and loyalty test. Quite sad if one thinks about it. Perhaps the Emperor didn’t realise that when you christen your son the lord of iron... it makes it very hard for him to ask for help.

      Do not blame this on the emperor, Perturabo being fucked up in the head was obvious by his very first action with his legion. Only a sick mind can justify a random innocent warrior being beaten to death. Roman army conducted this for those who showed cowardice, they had reason. Perturabo didn't. He was a monster from the start. If the Emperor had a fault, I say it was that he did not execute him upon this action alone.

      @emirhaneksioglu4503 4 года назад +5

      @Craft Zeppelin And what, disobey an order under the pretense that the primarch would withdraw it? If he was cruel enough to order such a thing in the first place what was to say he wouldn't get every one who disobeyed killed as well?
      And if they did disobey and he went simply okay well that is fine. Then it'd devolve into the primarch has no spine his orders mean nothing. Which is just as worse.
      Perturabo should never have given the order. Because both cancelling it and following it were equally as damning.

    The iron warriors spent years being ground against the worst the galaxy could throw at them, every battle they fought without complaint and never asked for favour or recognition. Never refusing an order from terra no matter the cost to them. All that blood and loss only for the home world they were fighting to protect to slip into rebellion. No wonder it broke their spirit to have their home turn against them.

    • @immortallvulture
      @immortallvulture 4 года назад +15

      Ben Siener to my knowledge of Caliban the rebellion was essentially a rift within the dark angels legion rather than the people of Calliban rebelling against the dark angels. That aside I’d argue the lion took it just as bad seeing as calliban was reduced to a pile of drifting rocks in space and he hasn’t been seen since that day along with the fact the hunting of the fallen and attempting to conceal the schism has come to define the modern dark angels.

      The problem is, as stated on the video, that Peturavo cared too litle about his own legion. Massive loses, no explanation to the families of what was happening. Humans aren't machines, some off work maintenance and care goes a long way, that's why Guilliman is so efficient really, 80% of his efforts are off battle.

    • @immortallvulture
      @immortallvulture 4 года назад +9

      DaX I don’t think it’s a case of him not caring, Perturabo has always struggled with the human element, both within himself and with others. There’s another story where Magnus asks him to build a device to help with psychic research only for Perturabo to crush it in front of him to make a point because he saw cruelty as the most efficient solution. Likewise with the decimation it was his attempt to teach his legion to never settle for being the second best, it wasn’t that he didn’t care more that he didn’t know how to show it. One wonders if guilliman had the tyrant of locos for a father and been bought up in the grudges and political intrigue of Olympian society if he wouldn’t have turned out the same way.

    Perturabo is often seen as less than his brothers. True he is not as charismatic, or as flashy, as most of the others. But that didn't make him any less great or worthy before he fell. He was mentally what his brother Mortarion was physically... I pity them both.
    Addendum: I KNOW it is not possible, whether from the in universe "rules" of becoming a Daemon, or the way that 40K works. But I wish that fallen Primarchs could be pulled out of the pit of pain, insanity, and corruption they drowned in and that their souls can find some of the peace they didn't have in life. Yes they were flawed, and yes they've done terrible things in service to their "patrons". But they are... were... human. And humans are flawed.
    I'd be satisfied with their souls, like Horus before them, being destroyed. Oblivion's nonexistence is better than eternity trapped with the "gods".

    • @angelusumbra5741

      @Cian Abroad
      I agree, but the nature of the Warp and its twisted, insane, and malicious "gods" would NEVER allow the fallen, especially the Primarchs, have a chance at better if there souls were released. They're all petty and spiteful, and would do anything and everything to hurt those freed fallen to hurt the loyalists and especially The Emperor. So ending them completely, so they are beyond the clutches of those Chaos bastards is likely the best to hope for in 40K.

      I don't believe he did it just because he could, but his logic and reasoning just seems too flawed to justify it. Fulgrim's legion were suffering and he managed to pull them from the brink without similar brutality (then again, every legion had a different character and, whilst the Emperor's Children may have been exemplary once, how they turned out doesn't reflect well on Fulgrim's disciplinary measures.)

    When you work with iron you realize. You can harden iron. But, if you harden it too much; it becomes brittle. Perturablo became emotionally brittle. Instead of trying to work with and learn from his brothers. As many of them worked with and learned from both the emperor and each other. He hardened his resolve to prove himself worthy with out help or input. He closed himself off from the very resources that could best help him get what he wanted most. Respect and kinship.

    Exactly that. Perturabo is, and always will be, a spiteful character. But a huge part of the tragedy is that it's his choice to be a tragedy. The world didn't shove all of this upon him; he chose to be passive aggressive, to stay on the sidelines, to pursue other paths. He disdained the spotlight, and yet complained that he was never in the spotlight. It really made me think about how I do that in my own life to various extents. It was a great book.

      There is only one instance that I can remember of the decimation being used right, and it was a very severe case where a legio had grown stagnant on a very long term siege(Numantia, 20years of siege) One member of the Scipio family decimated the legion first thing after his arrival, then forced them into heavy training and forced labour for half a year, then made them build a fortified wall around the city to make sure it would not get more supplies from outside, and then kept the heavy discipline for the rest of the siege under the threat of a second decimation. And it worked, they took the city in the end, albeit empty of life.

The problem is that he is all too happy to make those choices, without exhausting other options. Because his default is to be inflexible and logical enough to make those calls, he is both unable and uninterested to seek a better way.

    I choose to believe that Perturabo has been in exile trying to figure how to remove his warp corruption and return to his previous form. Perhaps inventing a device that can, if it doesn't kill you, reverse possession and/or mutation and then testing it on himself. He then orders the loyal among his legion to also undergo the procedure and then to find and either kill or cure the rest of the iron warriors. Maybe it has about a 10% chance to kill instead of cure (decimation).

    • @dramsac17
      @dramsac17 3 года назад

      Then I hope Perturabo runs into the Lion and is forced to give him the device after managing to convince the Lion that he stands against chaos if not for the emperor. And the Lion is obviously intrigued by the ability to remove chaos corruption from his own legion so he takes it after promising to "put it to good use"

    • @dramsac17
      @dramsac17 3 года назад

      But then the Lion brings it to Guilliman and either doesn't tell him where he got it or they decide not to tell anyone because no one will believe that Perturabo isn't evil and they won't trust his invention. Which of course will piss Perturabo off all over again and leave him and his Iron Warriors standing alone against both the empire and chaos

    I think it is great that just like Kurze, Perturabo also reeks of Mental Illness. Perturabo too suffered from a type of "insanity". So you can't really HATE on him and call him emo or a little bitch. This is the tragedy of Perturabo, another brilliant mind, severely suffering from mental illness, which was left unaddressed, of which we see the consequences.
    To me at least it adds to the depth of lore and characters, when said characters, ESPECIALLY Primarchs, are seen and portrayed with mental illness in mind. And how such a person affected his surroundings.
