Hi Vinny. Heck of a job ! Thank you very much. We arrived in March 1968 just after the demolition. A great pity as we are the only City in the Rail line to not have a down town. Sure hope the rebuild becomes a reality in my life time. In that regard, things have to get moving now ! Cheers, Keith

I grew up a few blocks from there on Fremont street. That area was all Portuguese people . My uncle opened Souzas Bakery on El Camino. I now retired and live in Portugal but I miss my hometown. I’m an SCU grad as well

I remember Souza's Bakery. I am doing a short video on the SES Hall and Portuguese in Santa Clara. Hope to be complete it by the end of the year.

Sounds good. There are still plenty of them there. In fact next weekend at the Santa Clara Marriott is the annual Luso America (Luso means Portuguese) Convention where Portuguese from all over the state get together to celebrate our culture

I am living in Santa Clara from last 10 years. Only place I was able to live that long after my birthplace. The day when I got in Santa Clara. I was wondering about the downtown of Santa Clara. Really great information. I would love to support the moment. It would be really great if I able to contribute something.

Hi Vinny, Do we know if any of the 20 imported homes from Boston at the beginning 1860s are still standing? From one researcher to another. Thank you for sharing.

All cream and roses... unless you happen to live in one of the downtown homeless encampments.
Or the fact that the cost of living is 114% higher than the national average.
Or the "average" cost of a house in Santa Clara is $1.45M.
IOW... there is a "flip side" to the story presented above.
And yes... I live in the South Bay.

He is right about one thing, "OK it may not seem like much of a downtown, but Santa Clara's downtown was once a thriving". Yeah, it WAS, until city council members turned it into a housing Habitrail to stuff more and more people in. Then there is the 49's deal that ruined the natural historical feel of Santa Clara. The city I grew up in was once home to many cherry and apricot orchards and the timeless Corn Palace property now filled with high rise dense housing. Now they can't even take care of my other home, the International Swim Center, shutting it down suddenly and unexpectedly without warning to the Swim Club. I will never go back to visit.

very interesting; sadly the good old "urban renewal" concept simply crapped out another viable old town community.

It is considering Santa Clara's Downtown was quite developed large. Shame to loose all those old and historic buildings.

You can't live in the past! It only makes you sad ! I once loved S.C. but it along with the rest of Silicon Valley it has turned into a hellhole of corruption and incompetence and over priced everything. The rents are horrible! It is overrun with foreigners- what ever happened to one of America's greatest towns? So glad to have escaped from there! It looks like greed has won out! Feel I have lost a large part of my past!

Lol, I wish they didn’t showcase “The Bronco” Bar. That bar is a dump, and is bringing down that are inside Franklin Mall. Every night there are police there arresting or pulling someone out of that bar. The patrons go out to the parking lot and blast there music and keep us all up in the neighborhood. So sick of it. Anyhow, Growing up here we were always laughed at because we were the only city with NO downtown. Every other city had nice ones, embarrassing.
