When you make your premise to be "A World with Chaotic Climates and Thousands of Islands" then also make the animal and wildlife have zero inhibitions they can be ANYTHING and ANY SIZE. It lends to an entire eclectic universe within one world. Clever. Amazing world for sure. Not necessarily impossible for someone else to do it though.

I was super interested and just asked questions and listened. As for the anime thing, a lot of anime were adapted in the 70s and the 80s without actually being presented as foreign. Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Gigantor. Or chopped up and turned into new shows like... what was that thing Macross got made into, Robotech I think? The author of One Piece is a world building nerd. Whenever the main cast visit a new island, Oda takes the time to introduce its culture, architecture, unique fauna and flora alongside its lore. He also pulls a lot of references from real world cultures and blends them seamlessly into the show.
    As a little fun fact. He does the same thing with characters, so I'm sure you (Richard) will have a good laugh recognizing some celebrities.

    8:30 The fact that there are english words, yeah, they are mainly there for novelty for the Japanese audience, but sometimes they are there to reference the IRL places that served as inspiration, even if it is just like an anime only thing. Dressrossa had a place called "Tienda del Bebé", in the Señor Pink flashback and it means "Baby's Shop".
    One of the most fun things you can do with One Piece is to try and find out the IRL references, either confirmed or possible candidates. Just like with Jojo's, I have learned so much about History, Art, Actors, fashion and other things just from studying One Piece.
    For Example, please check the painting called "The Elephants", painted by Salvador Dalí. Also pictures from arquitecture in Yemen. Or the story of King Joyoboyo from Indonesia. Or the Pirate Olivier Levasseur
    Maybe you would also want to look at the phenomenon of "Rayleigh Scattering", or Vertical Spike Waves, or Catatumbo lightning.
    There is just so, soo SOOOO much history, geography, history, art, pop culture EVERYWHERE.

    7:35 when creating the story, the author wanted the characters/locations to seem multicultural and not just Japanese to make the story's world building much more vast..
    eg. the main cast are ment to reflect certain cultures:
    -luffy -> Brazil
    zero-> Japan
    franky-> USA
    Brook-> British
    etc.
    Also, if you look at the architecture and people from different islands, inspiration was taken from many different cultures
    eg
    shandoria-> native Americans
    alabasta -> Egypt
    water 7 -> Venice

    One piece has some of the most amazing voice work I've ever heard in media. The Japanese voice cast are some of the best in the business, and the characters are so expressive, the story so epic and emotional (in so many directions), that it allows for some of the greatest voice performances you could find. There are scenes from this story that, even being over two decades old and knowing FULL well what is going to happen, they make me tear up every damn time. And that's due to the direction and composition of the shots, the top tier OST, and the incredible performances of the voice actors.

    Around the 8 minute mark, you discuss how there's a mix of both japanese and english text on things. And yes, I can confirm that in Japan, there's something called "decorative English" which is pretty much what it sounds like.
    Just like you said, similar to how there's english people who will get tattoos of chinese or japanese words, the same is true in Japan (though not quite for tattoos) where it's popular marketting practise to use english words and letters because the english language is seen as "trendy".
    You will find Japan has plenty of shirts, companies, ads, and even the lyrics in their songs will sometimes incorporate English words because it simply sounds cool to them.
    I mean think about the name of the show itself. "One Piece" doesn't actually have a secret Japanese name or anything it's translated from. The characters of the show will quite literally refer to the mysterious treasure as "One Piece" in english even though they're speaking japanese.

    So one of the coolest things about One Piece to me are these things called Cover Stories. Basically, Oda will take a character (alot of times a villain) from a previous arc and use the cover of each chapter to illustrate a story of what they are doing now that they're no longer relevant at the moment. You combine that with the fact that Oda is a super long term planner in his story telling and will recontextualize events or bring back a character from literally hundreds of chapters ago it really makes the world feel alive like things dont just revolve around the Strawhats.

It also forces the audience to confront their own biases, as agreeing with the villain can be uncomfortable.

    Regarding Japanese English wording, the Marines use "MARINE" as their designation in both manga and anime. The term is written in English. Richard observed the Japanese word "JUSTICE" written on the building. Different high-ranking individuals within the Marines have varied versions of justice as their motto, displayed on their walls. However, the entire Marine force shares the common attribute of adhering to justice, whatever its interpretation may be. As one ascends in rank, personal notions of justice become more prevalent. Examples of personalized justice mottos in Japanese for these high-ranking individuals include:
    - Kakageru Seigi: 掲げる正義 (Upheld Justice)
    - Zettai-Teki Seigi: 絶対的正義 (Absolute Justice)
    - Aokiji: だらけきった正義 (Lazy Justice)
    - Kizaru: どっちつかずの正義 (Unclear Justice)
    - Sakazuki: 徹底的な正義 (Thorough Justice)
    In all these instances, the individuals display their Japanese version of justice prominently, typically on a wall. Conversely, words meant to be universally understood are in English, such as "DEAD OR ALIVE" on wanted posters, reflecting English's status as a global language (even in the manga).

    I'm telling you, there's good and bad in One Piece.
    Some fun stuff is over the top and yes, it takes some getting used to in places. It is
    maybe a lot of getting used to.
    But once you get used to it, you see that it also unites an infinite number of cultures, has allusions to all sorts of real life events and characters.
    (The good the bad the ugly, etc.)
    Endless depth of character forms, has a complex and extraordinary narrative structure and simply offers an overall cultural experience that no other medium has ever managed.
    Easter eggs and references at all ends and characters and stories that go right into your heart.
    The best world building maybe even in all of media.
    It is, discounting some of the over-the-top comedy and the sometimes tiring and length of the plot, the greatest story ever told.
    Rightly number 1 of all manga and ingrained so deeply in the hearts of the fans that it is inseparable.
    A must watch. The best story ever.

    A lot of names in the manga are English words, sometimes written in our letters but often written in Japanese script which causes problem because it can actually take years before we find out how a word is actually written (since it's not actually a Japanese word so Japanese people or dictionaries can't help) which can have massive implications even story-wise xD

    9:31 my mom did the same thing. Funnily enough, in the Viz official translation for the One Piece manga they changed Zoro's name to Zolo because of Zorro. Viz does a lot of other things that are like that unfortunately so I tend to read fan translations but will sometimes read both for comparison as it can be difficult to faithfully translate Oda's intentions when there's a bunch of similar ways to say the thing but they have minor differences that have very different implications.

    Things being written in more than one language is actually extremely common in a lot of places. Anywhere that tourists go people try to use a lot of English. I live in South America and a lot of restaurants here either have English translations for each menu item or a completely separate menu all in English. I haven't been to Japan, but it wouldn't shock me if there are similar things there. One of my pet peeves here is that I speak fluent Spanish, but people will often go out of their way to accommodate me with English, even when it's obvious that my Spanish is much better. It's like damn it took a long time to learn this language and I'm trying to show respect by using it. Just let me use it.

    There is a fan project called "OnePace" out there where fans have cut and mixed episodes together to make the viewing experience a lot more... "tolerable", I guess is the best word for it. Especially for new viewers. Because as a massive fan myself, even I think they drag out some scenes waaaaay too much. According to them they've also done the cut, mixing and all of that, without loosing any valuable information. The audio is also supposed to be really well edited and sound natural. The viewing experience is apparently 45% faster according to them. Now, I don't work for them nor have I seen the edited versions of the episodes, so I can't speak for the quality and whatnot, but instead only for what I've heard and read myself. So for new viewers, that could be a good thing. At the same thing though... I'm also in the boat of "More One Piece, the better.", but that's only because I really love the show and can "tolerate" the slow pacing that accurs at times.

    "an earth" is a good way to put it. I think it would be easier to explain in Star Trek terms though and that this is just it's own planet with it's own cultures, etc.
    I say Star Trek because they were great at things like this. One Piece itself is written in a sort of semi period piece like writing where it's set metaphorically in our great pirate age (with strangely historically accurate politics and relations between people, peoples and cultures) but on a seperate planet with different people. Like Star Trek it has the extra freedom to move things around.
    The author, as you'll see with this vid, is a master at story telling and world building through visuals. Every single island we go to has it's own culture and history/personality to it and the majority of this is shown to us rather than outright explained.
    The author (Oda) is a massive history buff, so if you know your history there's so many references to things as well as jokes and puns kicking around. There's a character that's the spitting image of President Lincoln who has a joke on his politics where he never takes a step back; this is shown by the fact he literally never takes a step back despite being pushed into situations where he should. This is just one tiny joke among many that Oda puts in, this one is so small that most people might not have even noticed it.
    There's also multiple references to massive works like the Divine Comedy, Christian/Judeo mythology, Sherlock Holmes, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Aesop's stories, Gullivers Travels, Norse Mythology, etc. as well as to not-much-talked-about historical events like what happened to asbestos mining towns. The author, not only is well read; he understands the core of the stories and even manages to add to them which sometimes subverts the original point with a better one. Due to that understanding his references are melded into his world seamlessly which I think I've only seen done in his strange cartoony style that has surprising depth. Part of this includes that Zoro, partially is the Zorro you know and you might be able to see that while going through the series (although you'll find that his womanising has been adopted by another).
    In Japanese culture English is used a lot like how some of the Western world uses Japanese characters; it just looks kinda cool to them. To the point that they include nonsense English as decorations on random commercial products in the same way explained with tattoos in your vid. That said, there is a very purposeful attempt on Oda to making One Piece feel massive and include various cultures. The language thing doesn't appear much as it's more taken in the vein that they're all speaking a common tongue due to the existence of a world government. The idea itself has international appeal. Most characters do have a sort of cultural link and use some other languages in attack names or insults. The well dressed, chivalrous, perverted, blonde haired cook has his attacks in French based mainly on food puns; like a butcher.
    Love to hear that about the sub; because the emotions that the Japanese voice actors are perfect for the situation they're in. The English one's are good, but you can sort of hear the studio that they're recording in. It's not married to the environments well. It might be a western ideaology with how audio should be mixed in an animation with the voices overpowering everything else for ease of hearing as it's generally mixed for younger audiences.
    If you read often then I'd say that Oda's writing style is best described as somewhere in between Tolkein and Pratchet; where the writing can be as geniously simple as Pratchet but then as deep historically and politically complex as Tolkein. Along with references; there's a character whos name is Donquixote.
    Interestingly too, is the fact that the main character, isn't a "hero". He's selfish, he steals, he doesn't mind taking hostages or punching first asking questions second. Unlike most characters in his position, Luffy just acts. He doesn't explain himself, he doesn't care about others trying to explain themselves or their histories. Given that you've seen Zorro I assume that you've also seen the monkey king, or the journey to the west that was around the same time; you'll find plenty of references from that in One Piece too.
    The appeal of One Piece might be a good vid to react to next if you don't mind minor spoilers.
