  • In this episode of McNally's Musket Missive we discuss what to with a million flintlock muskets now that rockbangers are obsolete. We also learn that I don't know how to pronounce Watervliet and also examine why it's important to take notes on what photos you want to take so you don't end up having to scramble to find something else you can use in a pinch.

Most people seem to think of the Spencer and Henry repeaters or the Gatling Gun and other rifles when thinking of the Civil War. For me I always think of the old conversion muskets that were dragged out from state and Federal arsenals being stored in anticipation for this moment. Using them to field weapons for the largest armies in America up to that time in 1861 and 1862.

Interesting and informative as always. You're also finding a voice and presence on screen, which is a plus for the show.

Can you make a video on the crude percussion cap conversions? I've looked it up on the net and have scene some "abominations". I think abominations are too harsh of a word. Still I love these crude conversions though they're pretty interesting.

A percussion conversion roundup sounds like a fantastic idea! Part of the issue I run into making videos is that I have to be mindful of copyright considerations, which is why I've tried to stick with things in my possession so far. Otherwise I'd have had more to say about things like Springfield-made Charleville pattern muskets, the road from the earliest US production muskets to the Model 1816, and other things like that.

Hello, I have a percussion conversion I'd like to send you photos of if you were willing to give me what info you may know regarding the firearm. It has no makings at all under it other than a serial number on the barrel under the stock.
