  • Some of the remains of Brunel's Atmospheric Railway fiasco of 1847 - 48. He used no locomotives and instead a pipe between the tracks had a vacuum created inside it by pumping stations and a carriage with a piston beneath it was pushed along at speeds of up to 70mph. The valve was unreliable and this caused its demise.

    Another great Video . You have explained things pretty well ,and the photography helps with the understanding . It was an attempt at Progress . Your unit of measurement Tons of smoke is pretty accurate . Only the last generation that used coal could have an idea . The soot was a Solid . But then again coal was Progress that helped change the world . Thank you .
