Loved the alien reveal "I expected something more crazy or silly". The alien then proceeds to put on a hat and cane and performs a song & dance 3 seconds later.
I actually saw a group cosplay at a convention of what we thought was Spaceballs, but once a guy moved, we saw the man with a mustache in the wedding dress, which let us know that they were cosplaying the Spaceballs stunt doubles!
If you had seen the Kevin Costner Robin Hood film, you would have definitely recognized Men in Tights as a parody film. Many of the scenes were direct recreations. The Costner film was the reason that the story started in the Mid-East, rather than England. By they way, the guy at the diner said "Not again!", when the little alien burst out of his chest. There was a reason for that. Good reaction. You caught most of the stuff - even the Trek and Planet of the Apes references. Good job.
13:52 So while this was only a Jawa parody and no Ben Kenobi, the song they're singing *is* from a movie called Bridge on the River Kwai, staring one Sir Alec Guinness. So Old Ben is there in spirit.
The reason one of the combs was different for the comb the desert gag was the white stormtroopers had regular combs and the black stromtroopers had an afro pick.
This movie is so aware of itself. They went all in on the story, but they also knew exactly what the movie was and had all the fun they could with that aspect. Mel Brooks has a unique and unmatched gift for this sort of thing.
Dot's body was played by Lorene Yarnell, a somewhat famous mime artist. She and her then-husband had a variety show in the 1970's, _Shields and Yarnell._ Dot's voice was done by Joan Rivers, who just riffed the movie after it was finished.
Lucas approved the making of this movie. Except for one thing: the contract prevented Mel Brooks from profiting from merchandising on the film. Hence the "merchandising" joke that Mel Brooks included in the movie as his revenge for that! LOL! My favorite thing about Mel Brooks is how he finds way to get around the censors by changing the definition of words. He spent the entire beginning of the movie in Young Frankenstein using German accents in order to use "Schwanstucker", and most of Spaceballs equating Helmet = Head to get away with "I bet she gives great helmet"! Absolute gangster! LMAO!
One funny thing was that apart from the promise that he couldn't make any merchandise. Brooks was also told by Lucas that he couldn't make Lonestar look like Solo so he made him look like Indiana Jones. 😂
It is told that when George Lucas was approached by Brooks to see if he would be ok with them doing this parody, he allegedly agreed as long as they "sold no merchandise" for the movie. So of course what does Mel Brooks do....he lives up to the agreement and sells no merchandise, but he fills the movie with it. LOL
I don't believe that most people would have been aware of the Stormtrooper hitting his head in Star Wars when Spaceballs came out. I bought the first retail VHS of the film that year, and remember it well. It was 4:3 so it wasn't even in frame. Also, the sound effect of the impact was added later, after the 'Widescreen' edition (4:3 letterbox) revealed the incident.
A comedy from the late 80s that I always thought was a blast is "Ruthless People" with Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Bette Midler and even Lone Starr is in it. Its a scream.
Lucas was inspired by Flash Gordon, but the film crawl style was from another of his inspirations, Buck Rogers… another film that inspired Lucas was Forbidden Planet, which btw is a great movie and would be awesome if you’d react to it. That film is also inspired from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Forbidden Planet not only inspired Lucas, but also Gene Roddenberry of Star Trek fame. Speaking of Star Trek, the actor who plays the guy “combing the desert” who hasn’t “found shit” is Tim Russ who went on to do a lot of sci fi, including Star Trek Voyager where he plays Tuvock.
Thanks for reacting to this one Thor! I was really hoping you'd react to this knowing how much you like Star Wars. Also I loved the merchandising in this film. Apparently Lucas approved the film with one stipulation (no merchandising was to be made from the film)...so I think that's why Mel Brooks worked that into the story? If I'm telling it wrong, I'm sure some "know it all" will give you the correct version in the comments! haha :)
I honestly enjoy and appreciate this movie even more knowing Mel Brooks talked to George Lucas about it, and the merchandising joke was too accurate and honestly perfect... and you're not wrong, the comments section will correct all one's factual errors in life haha :)
Funny story, I watched this growing up in the on my parents VCR, but they didn't know how to format the TV to widescreen so everything we watched got cropped; and during the nose surgery scene the crop was just perfect enough to cut the nose off her portrait. So for years I thought it had been purposely shot like that and Vespa's old nose was some kind of noodle incident; being so terrible and disgusting it would be like looking upon Medusa's face!
You aren't going to believe this, but Mel Brooks (Brooks Films) produced "The Elephant Man." Yes, Mel Brooks. And his wife until she passed, Ann Bankroft, was in it. The Elephant Man is an amazing film...totally off center of Brooks' comedy genre.

14:44 This part wasn’t originally what Brooks had in mind for the movie, he added this running gag after Lucas, whose a big fan of Mel Brooks’ work, gave him the green light to make Spaceballs on the condition that no merchandise would ever be made for the movie. The reason Lucas gave the ultimatum was because he realized that Spaceballs toys would’ve looked extremely similar to the Star Wars toys that were on store shelves at the time Spaceballs was in production. Mel Brooks accepted the ultimatum and gave us one of the most iconic gags of the movie: Merchandising! Merchandising!
I recommend two b/w screwball commedies like Spaceballs. Both star Cary Grant. Bringing Up Baby is a movie about a man who just found a leopard in the museum he is working in. The baby is the leopard. The second one is Arsenic & Old Lace. Grant plays the nephew of two ladies who take in travelers for the night. Also living there is an uncle who runs up the stairs like Teddy Roosevelt yelling "Charge". Grant arrives with his fiance to introduce her and soon finds something strange in the basement.
Great reaction, you got pretty much all of it. Two more things: The Dink Dinks were doing the march from The Bridge on the River Kwai (another Alec Guiness film) and to complete your understanding of the baby alien's song and dance you must watch the classic 1955 Warner Brothers cartoon One Froggy Evening starring Michigan J Frog.
This movie is SO MUCH FUN. My favorite line is also "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former college roommate." Though when I repeat it I had sister and best friend added. But so much fun. If you do continue mel brooks two other movies of his I recommend are history of the world part 1 and the producers(original not remake)

I always wished they had added one of the 'Dinks' or something to represent Toto. That would have been epic 🤩. Yeah, it really helps if you see the movies that they parody. Men in Tights is a parody of the 1991 Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Young Frankenstein is a parody of the 1931 Frankenstein with nods to the 1935 The Bride of Frankenstein. Blazing Saddles is a poke at all the classic Westerns.
Yes! I was 13 when we saw this in the theater. The movie my Mom and I quoted on a daily basis. Love it and even though it’s a Star Wars parody, it’s a classic in its own right. Enjoy!👏🏻👍🏻 I’m so glad Mel Brooks has a new fan.
@@jeanine6328 I think it's because going to or "beyond" lightspeed usually is accompanied by a visual of the stars streaking into lines (sometimes multicolored ones if they have the budget), so the visual that's "beyond" lines is....plaid. That way they can then show how the Spaceballs bypass Lone Starr's ship.
Great movie. Other great Mel Brooks spoof movies are : Robin Hood Men in tights (See Kevin Costner Robin Hood 1990 movie before) and High Anxiety which is a spoof on classic Alfred Hitchcock movies like Psycho or The Birds which you obviously have to see before seeing it
love this movie. Funny enough the first time I watched it as a kid was before I'd watched all the star wars films. Then when I watched it again as an adult I finally got all the references and got to re-enjoy it.
As you can see, I found your review of Space Balls!! You were able to get a lot of the references towards the other sci-fi movies outside of Star Wars…. Congrats my friend, you are officially one of us!❤️ Now, there are a lot of 80’s references put into the movie (the Double Mint girls) as was in Men in Tights (Air Jordans- when Achoo had to pump his shoes) …. And many more! ….. Including referencing his own movies “It’s good to be the King!” THATS what makes Mel Brooks films SO Fan-FrEaKiNg-Tastic! There are a lot of Easter Eggs in his films, allowing you to watch them over and over, making them timeless! Thank you for watching this movie and for watching all of the great films of my generations past! They truly ARE the best and the foundation of the ones that came after. Not sure if you have watched Fawlty Towers yet, but I do know you have watched Life of Brian and you are a fan. So, my next recommendation is Fawlty Towers. It is a series and is only 12 episodes, 30 minutes each. Not sure if you do reviews like that, but if you don’t, still watch on your own time! THE BEST!!
LOL. I just finished watching your Blazing Saddles reaction and commented to recommend this one. Thanks for being so quick about it! 😂 (I’m so behind on these, lol)
Also interesting is the fact that the nurse with the plastic surgeon is the same actress who played the captain in STARSHIP TROOPERS the ship that Ibanez pilots
If you've never seen The Naked Gun, you absolutely have to. It's a very similar type of humor to what Mel Brooks does, but I think it's even better because the acting is so serious in such ridiculous situations.
LMAO LOVE It !!I'm 64 Grew up on Mel Brooks movies && waited an hour in line to see the 1st Star wars movie....to see Mel parody it knocked me off my ass!! LOL
My favorite Mel Brooks film! I actually mention this in every reaction… but Mel Brooks does a commentary that's available on laserdisc and DVD(where Mel Brooks mentions that the laserdisc has the commentary) and also mentions that he(Mel Brooks) wanted to have the ship go for the WHOLE MOVIE! 😂😂
I've never seen any of the SW movies and I've always loved Spaceballs. In the decade between the two, SW was such a huge part of pop culture that I didn't have any trouble following the jokes
Funny, I just watched this a couple of days ago! Saw it in the theater and it has been a favorite ever since. If you want to go REALLY old and classic on a comedy, you might see Mr. Blandings Builds His Dreamhouse, a fantastic sarcastic 1948 Cary Grant comedy that spoofs the real absurd struggles of moving and building a home. Otherwise, if you haven’t seen Airplane, you definitely owe it to yourself! 😃 Thanks for uploading this video, it was fun. 😉
The best part of the merchandising scene is it came up because Brooks asked Lucas if it was okay that he was parodying Star Wars and Lucas said he could do anything so long as he didn't merchandise the movie...
One thing few people seem to catch is that the Xenomorph's little dance routine is a play on a dancing, singing frog in a Looney Tunes cartoon ("One Froggy Morning").
History of the World part 1, Dracula: Dead and Loving it, Robin Men in Tights, and any of the Naked Gun movies. LoL That was the late John Hurt reprising his role from Aliens with a chest burster.
If you haven't seen it before, I suggest checking out "Some Like It Hot". It's a classic comedy from 1959 sigh Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, and Marilyn Monroe. A great watch
Most of the things I would comment on, I already see in the comments🤷♀️😉 But the part about her being a bass singer🤭🤭 that's a nod to the hidden bases in Star Wars (Alderaan, Yavin 4)
If you take a screengrab of the intro segment (around 1:00) and bisect Thor's face you can take the left half, mirror it, and get Thor Starr....while the right side forms... Thor's Helmet?!
"Spaceballs": Mel Brooks does to Space Opera/Fantasy what he'd done to the Hollywood Western with "Blazing Saddles" (1974). If you can read this, you don't need glasses.4:31 That's Joan Rivers. 16:32 Then, in 2002, there's "Wash" Washburn and his battling Dinosaurs in "Firefly": ruclips.net/video/e35BU1eB_5k/видео.html Next up: "Galaxy Quest" (1999). Also in that year, the "Sputnik Twins," "October Sky" and "The Iron Giant." "October Sky" is the Serious tale of coal town teens seeking to avoid The Pit with Rocket Science. Featuring Trigonometry, coal miners, and Werner Von Braun, we see the early life of NASA scientist Homer Hickam, Jr. "The Iron Giant" is an animated feature set in 1957 New England after the launch of Sputnik. An adventurous boy finds a giant Alien robot in the woods. Vin Diesel has an unusual role and has this exit line: "Hogarth, I go now. You stay. No following."
Also, the same teams who did the effects for the original Star Wars trilogy (Industrial Light and Magic) also worked on Spaceballs. The movie also had approval from George Lucas himself, with one thing to avoid: merchandising the movie. And that's why the joke is in the movie
If you’re doing Star Wars parodies, please consider the three Robot Chicken Star Wars specials. So hilarious and you’ll never look at a few minor and major characters the same way again.
It is hard to find a favorite Mel Brooks movie when he makes movies like The Producers, Young Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles but this movie is pretty high up there. They are all great. My favorite scene is the Alien reference. The Alien is dancing like the singing and dancing looney tune frog.
According to Mel Brooks, George Lucas loved this movie, and wrote him a letter after its premiere, saying he thought he was going to bust something from laughing so hard. Lucas also told Brooks had he not chosen to parody Star Wars, this movie would have succeeded as a great adventure movie. - IMDB
I watched Spaceballs multiple times before I ever saw Star Wars and I loved it! Of course, I was 12 when I first saw Star Wars, so I was really young all those times I saw Spaceballs and nothing made sense to me anyway. I may have had far too little supervision as a child.

Greaaaat reaction! I highly recommend Mel Brooks' "History of the world". It's absolutely hilarious.
I Never watched this movie before but it was weird in a funny and good way! Your reaction to this was amazing!
That’s a compliment I really appreciate, thanks so much!
Check out ice pirates
@@nickreacts6394 you’re welcome Thor! Keep it up!
love this movie. Funny enough the first time I watched it as a kid was before I'd watched all the star wars films. Then when I watched it again as an adult I finally got all the references and got to re-enjoy it.
I would suggest "Airplane!" and "Top Secret". They're funny, too, and if you liked this I think you'd live those, too.
(I’m so behind on these, lol)
"F*CK! Even in the future, NOTHING WORKS!"
ATF Line! 🤣🤣🤣
Definitely will have those reactions coming soon! (the first one is already on patreon :) )
16:35 almost as funny as the proposed title for Spaceballs 3, the search for Spaceballs 2😉
Industrial Light and Magic did the Special FX
Thanks for uploading this video, it was fun. 😉
The best part of the merchandising scene is it came up because Brooks asked Lucas if it was okay that he was parodying Star Wars and Lucas said he could do anything so long as he didn't merchandise the movie...
My all time favourite Mel Brooks film
Stormtrooper who hit his head was in Star Wars Epidode IV: A New Hope 18:35
29:03 Leia wasnt in Star Wars til Star Wars 4
One thing few people seem to catch is that the Xenomorph's little dance routine is a play on a dancing, singing frog in a Looney Tunes cartoon ("One Froggy Morning").
History of the World part 1, Dracula: Dead and Loving it, Robin Men in Tights, and any of the Naked Gun movies. LoL
That was the late John Hurt reprising his role from Aliens with a chest burster.
if you pause the film when they show the parking lot of the space cafe you can see a YT-1300 (millennium falcon ) parked there
If you haven't seen it before, I suggest checking out "Some Like It Hot". It's a classic comedy from 1959 sigh Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon, and Marilyn Monroe. A great watch
High Anxiety is my favorite Mel Brooks film, but i saw most of Hitchcocks movies before hand!
They were planning on making a sequel called Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2, but it never got off the ground :P
Most of the things I would comment on, I already see in the comments🤷♀️😉
But the part about her being a bass singer🤭🤭 that's a nod to the hidden bases in Star Wars (Alderaan, Yavin 4)
17:15 Of course there is Star Wars the toilet paper, it's the script for the Kenobi show.
'ive heard that Lucaas not onl;y heard about this movie but even helped with props for starships.
Also in that year, the "Sputnik Twins," "October Sky" and "The Iron Giant."
"October Sky" is the Serious tale of coal town teens seeking to avoid The Pit with Rocket Science.
For more Rick Moranis check out Little Shop of Horrors! Awesome dark musical comedy. Also has Steve Martin and Bill Murray 😂🔥
Also, the same teams who did the effects for the original Star Wars trilogy (Industrial Light and Magic) also worked on Spaceballs. The movie also had approval from George Lucas himself, with one thing to avoid: merchandising the movie. And that's why the joke is in the movie
Thanks love your reactions! Recreational
I dig your outro theme. Just thought I'd tell you that.
If you’re doing Star Wars parodies, please consider the three Robot Chicken Star Wars specials. So hilarious and you’ll never look at a few minor and major characters the same way again.
Man in "bar scene" is the same actor as in the "Alien". ;)
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊
"I'm surprised there _isn't_ Star Wars toilet paper, to be honest." Well, actually...
Yes... not only did George Lucas know about this movie he volunteered some of his SFX department to help with it. If you look closely at the outside of the diner at the end you catch sight of the ACTUAL Millenium Falcon.
