I don´t mind the looks of this one, it´s pretty sleek. That said, I´m always concerned about how effective these things are. I´d rather just feel the wind, rather than having any kind of fairing create buffeting around my head.
What a great project 👏. And the price can't be beat. Curious what machine you used for the trade? Let us know. I suspect a fueling issue. The aftermarket exhaust,, not 👎. Now,, regarding the faring. Considering the expense and its specialty (Rocket only),, selling it would be a possibility. But,, with your skills in the Paint booth,, A complete respray of the bike to an Eye popping Colour,, faring included would be super cool 😎👍. Maybe a Pearl White or Root Beer Brown metallic. 🤩🤌jmho.
I immediately thought the bike looked better when you took the fairing off. That said it makes a completely different sort of statement with it on. If it was me I'd leave it off most of the time but put it on if I'm doing a long trip. Then I'd have the best if both worlds.
Del, my neighbour was a bike fanatic (like myself) and had a collection of bikes, which unfortunately all had to be kept outside as he had no garage facilities. The bikes in question were mainly KH Kawasaki 2 strokes triples, in fact he had one of each capacity from 250cc to 750cc. The only protection the bike had was a tarpaulin to try and protect them from the elements. He did however make his own protective anti-corrosion spray to help protect the bikes. He had a plant sprayer bottle and mixed up his own concoction of petrol and 2 stroke oil. He liberally sprayed the bikes with this mixture. After a few hours the petrol had evaporated away and the bike had a thin layer of 2 stroke oil covering the bike, including all the chrome and other brightwork. It certainly seemed to do the trick as the special mixture seemed to keep the corrosion at bay. Sad end to this story, after his relationship broke down he sold his house and went to live in Ireland (his mother and relatives all lived there). He would ring me occasionally for a chat and told me that he had met another woman there and everything was really going great. He even invited me over to stay for a holiday with them. Months later I had a phone call from his sister saying he was really poorly and not expected to recover. He passed away a few days later at the age of 42. I wish I could have taken up his offer of a holiday over in Ireland. It would have been great to meet up with him again and see what mischief we could have gotten up to.
What a sad story and thank you for sharing that with us, like you say, time waits for no-one, so sad... and his tip for the petrol/2 stroke oil concoction, that's a handy tip to know and passed on, so he's not forgotten. Take care Michael.
7:07 - Quite purposedly so, I ´d like to add. I´ve got quite a few tractors of different ages, and they´re actually equipped with copper nuts on the exhaust, for this exact reason! If you try to loosen these by force, and it will not give, the nut will always break first, and the stud might still be salveageble. Clever use of material properties! Also, using materials that are lower on the galvanic scale, the "sacrificial" part will always suffer a lot of the corrosion that would otherwise hurt the more important one.
I'd keep the fairing and ride it with and without it. Don't decide right away. It looks good without it, but doesn't look bad, and a fairing has it's benefits, especially on longer rides.
Great project bike Del ! Can't wait for future videos on it ! Not a big fan of the batwing fairing , it does not suit the bike and i think the Rocket 3 looks better naked 👍
I've got a 1997 Harley Bad boy (FXSTSB) with only 4,000 original miles and all original except for exhaust - I'm the original owner too. I bought it at a time I was a young engineer and I feel into a few business start-ups and needless to say, I got so busy with work that the bike hardly got much travel. I just got done doing a complete clean up on it with the aid of your videos. I flushed all the break lines with new fluid, did clutch adjustment, changed all fluids, and rebuilt the carb and she starts right up....
I'm curious to see what your detailer can do. I have an older bike with similar looking chrome and I constantly chase the rust. I don't mind the fairing and I'm sure it does wonders to keep the wind down.
Also that ‘R2D2’ noise after you turn the bike off is the fuel pressure purging. Mine does it. Owned it 7 years & never been a problem. I’ve also had mine remapped (upped the ponies, torques, opened the secondary butterfly’s, upped the rev & speed limit, lowered the temp slightly that the fan turns on & corrected the speedo) & hit 225km/hr on the back straight of Pukekohe Park Raceway a few years back. I’ve fitted T-Bars from a local NZ Company, and built my own towbar & single wheel trailer for it.
Thanks mate, that's great advice, I'll be talking about all those things with the dyno guys, we have a little surprise coming soon reagrding the tuning (happy discovery), and I have been looking at the t-bars (which I think are from an NZ company), they look fantastic and much nicer than these scratched up factory bars, not cheap but then they look good quality... how are they to ride with?, same reach, or a bit different? I think it's Thunderbike bars, is that what you've got? Thanks!
@@Moonfleet41- I’m long in the arm at 6’3” so what suits me may not suit others. I like them. Handlebar Company in Nelson, New Zealand. I have no personal connection with them other than being a very satisfied customer.
8:00 - Dunno about that oil, but I did this with a 60cm (2ft) assembly which was one steel tube inside another, about 3/4" thick. They were initially like one piece, I stood it upright in a vise and sprayed it about 4-5 times while I was doing other things in the shop, think it was about 2 hours in total. Put a pipe wrench to it, and they came apart like nothing. So, I totally support Del here - Just be patient, and use a lot of lube. What I used is not what he showed here, but that´s not the point, either. But just use it, try carefully - if it seems to destructive for your purpose, leave it and just lube again.
Hi Del, as a detailing enthusiast, Im really looking forward to the difference a good detail will make to the bike. My expectation is that it will transform it. As for the fairing, its all about what you feel & if its an expensive piece of kit and it doesn't do it for you then why not sell it to offset the coming cost to the bike??
lol It sounds like an old phone modem hahaha! Brilliant deal though! It looks so much better without the fairing, but that's just me. You just simply cannot beat two old school headlights, IMHO
My word, just the word modem conjures up that squirming sound immediately! The happy days of dail up aye... 'don't use the phone!'... today's kids will never know the pain!
One thing to note ( learned from a friend with one ) is there is a sump mod for certain age models which addresses oil pick up problems and also a final drive bearing mod which unfortunately requires engine out to do. I'm sure the info will be available
The fairing is kind of both too much and not enough. If one’s into the bagger look, you could make it work and go all in with matching saddlebags and all the bagger bells and whistles. But I think for the bagger style to work it has to be all in, and way over the top in Hot Wheels kind of way. For RUclips videos that could be cool, and I’m sure you could pull it off. If you’re into the bagger style and the rocket is a bike you’re keeping long term, you could even justify the cost. If its not a bike you have long term plans for, sell the fairing, Get a flyscreen and spend the rest of the money on polishing up the chrome. If its too far gone I would consider powdercoating it too and go for a blacked out aggressive look. What a score of a bike.
Thanks mate.. that's quite a plan.. the Rocket Touring already exists, all the bells and whistles, even more chrome, and this being a Roadster makes that a lot of expensive work and parts... but maybe some kind of half way minimal bagger like the F6B..!!!
Sell the fairing to Nigel Farage as a McShake guard, renew the tyres, fluids & fuel, coat the brightwork with enough red-oxide to be trendy, stock up on Scotch Eggs, spare plugs & enough injector cleaner to irrigate Kryten's colon, re-register it as CCU 666, then deliver it at a ridiculously high speed to Rat Queen Bikes for suitable 'future-proof' detailing. You know it makes sense, apols to Penny & your cardiac team; they can thank me later! : )xx
I missed out on a similar condition 2012 1700 Thunderbird last week. Went for about £4200 in the end, but I know I could have rescued it fairly cheaply. I already have an immaculate 1600ABS and really wanted another as a winter hack. I love rescuing older bikes. Loving your work Del.
Hi Darren, what a shame you missed it! Would have made a perfect project, specially for that money and yes, also I did think about making this a winter hack and riding it as it is, but at such low mileage it was worth turning it into a nice bike again!
The bike looks much better without the fairing, the chrome isn't helping it, paint it or powder coat the chrome bits. And finally that has got to be the ugliest exhaust system I have ever seen.
Have to say not a massive fan of the front fairing, I think it needs a small screen at the minimum just to act as a windbreak. I might also be a good idea to see the fairing and use the money to offset the cost of refinishing some of the chrome parts.
When these first came out, I was determined that I should have one. Unfortunately, there was no chance of sensibly making the finances available. Now, I could just about liberate enough funds to get one. However, the intervening years have not been kind to my health, and it would be foolish to even try to manhandle one. As Marvin, the paranoid android said: "Life, don't talk to me about life". :)
So sorry to hear that mate, I've got my own health issues to deal with now, so I know how you feel, but this opportunity was just too good to miss! And having ridden it, it is surprisingly lighter than I expected, having a very low centre of gravity.
After 49 years in the trade Aerokroil is without doubt the best penetrating oil in the business. It usually works when everything has failed. Keep the fairing and enjoy a much less tiring ride at speed. From the comments it appears a batwing is not considered cool in the U.K. Try the bike before you decide whether it stays or goes. I would never get rid of mine. Did you put fresh petrol in the tank ?
Hi John, the bike's been back on the road since June and riding around, done a fair few miles since the MOT, so that will bear out that there's been new fuel through it, I'd say it's still a little bunged up after storage, we'll find out in due course! I love batwings for what they are, they do kind of visually hide half the road ahead, they're quite a door up in front of your face, but on the other hand they are effective!
Ha ha ha, it looks like possibly a wonderful opportunity to make the ultimate mad max bike, delboys garage style. Talking of ponies in the stable, I nearly swapped it for a horse tonight. But alas, I came to my senses 😅 I did, however, fit a rather nice mini GPS speedo today. So, no more second-guessing with the magnets and pickup speedo I had on it before. Can't wait to see what you have planned to do with this beast of a bike!
Mmm ..Not to touch is to do a restoration project. If you remove it, then the sky is the limit. The front cover as is has a lot of space for paint and sculpture, and you can download it and if it has value, then sell it. If it's me, I keep it, but with your abilities, ya'lla, sell it or sculpt/paint it.
I prefer a smaller fly screen. It looks a bit lardy with it on. The old Rocket III looked too hefty compared to the modern Rocket, and I think that Triumph read it well, by moving away from a cruiser style to a roadster.
In some ways I agree, the newer Rocket model is certainly much smaller, but then again some view that they killed off an iconic motorcyle that was unique for being so enormous... different opinions vary aye?!
I believe the R2D2 sound is the stepper motor that controls the throttle position, it's a little worm gear by the throttle bodies. Triupmh used that a bunch in those years, I had that on a Tiger 800. It does it at start up and when you turn it off, the later being more noticable.
Had a 2011 Classic, great bikes but really hard to get Triumph accessories. 2nd hand market for bits can be expensive! Get rid of the faring and go for the small fairing/wind deflector. I have one if you want it!
Great video, Penny and Del! Looks like a most worthy project and I look forward to seeing you put your all of your usual style, creativity and diligence into it. As for the fairing, it's a hard NO from me. I am not a Harley guy, but even so I feel that these fairings with their tiny windshields look ridiculous. I'm not questioning their function in general - I have no basis in experience for that - and no doubt it's very well made, especially if it's built like a Corbin seat. If you do take it off you might be able to get some decent cash for it. But ultimately the decision is yours and if you choose to keep it on the bike I won't think less of you - honest! Take care, dear friends. Be well and ride safe.
Thanks mate, it seems to tbe the trend to be cashing it towards the project which will be a great way to raise some funds... and you're right, it is well made, I was quite surprised, and again yes, it's an iconic Harley Davidson image and, perhaps, confusing on a Triumph! Take care and have a great weekend, than you for your great support, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 If it's the same Corbin that makes the seats I can vouch for the quality - my new-old BMW K75S Is my third bike in a row to get that very spendy upgrade!
Aero-Kroil has pulled my fat out of the fire on more than one occasion and is a staple in my garage. However, if you ever find yourself needing some, and it's late in the day and the stores are closed, I've found that a mixture of kerosene (paraffin in the UK) and Dexron III in equal parts is just as effective (and can be made for a fraction of what Kroil products cost). Sell the Corbin fairing and put the funds towards getting the rest of the Rocket up to par.
THank you so much Paul, that has reminded me that I heard this many years ago from Joe Pie and that is the soundest advice out there! 50/50 kerosene and ATF... may just give it a try as my can is almost done and have you see the price of it lol
I vote to delete the old fairing and replace with a simple, clear windscreen that fits the line of the bike. While you're at it, ditch the original saddle and pillion seat for a modern seat like you've done on other bikes. Then maybe delete some superfluous chrome bits and you'll have a great looking bike.
Hi Delboy, I don't know if you have sea foam there but if you do per instructions put that in the tank. It has been out for many years and works great cleaning injectors and carbs. You will be amazed as I have seen it work. Just a suggestion. That's going to be an awesome bike. Best regards, Frank from Florida.
Hey Frank, thanks so much for that wonderful advice, I have heard of it and I'm sure it would work great... initially the plan is to run the bike over to a Dyno to identify the problem, we're going to put the injectors in to a cleaning solution and check the spray pattern and I'd say sea foam is a great way to flush out the tank... thanks for the heads up!
I'd sell the fairing to keep the project costs down if the batwing is worth something. Each to their own, but I'm not keen on the batwing. Also thanks for the aerokroil tip. Been apprehensive of taking my Bandit headers off for ages after seeing so many broken stud disasters. Great video as always D&P. Following this with interest.
Good call on the Kroil, when I got my Busa I broke off 6 out of 8 studs using other well known penetrating oils, but on the Legend project all 12 nuts were even worse, but I soaked them for a total of 2 weeks, topping it with a tiny squirt (twice a day) and a little heat, after that 2 weeks worked them backwards and forwards a little, then continued again for another week twice a day, they all came off without a single drama... just need to be patient!
Del, the Rocket 3 has been my dream bike since launch, but prices were also a massive stopping point for me, especially with Thai import tax mak8ng a purchase around £23-25k , can't wait to see what you do to this beauty, Bat wing fairing honesty I think it looks cool as fluck...makes it look like a real tourer and the speed that bad boy goes it will keep you hanging on for dear life...
Hi Dave.. thanks for youtr kind words, and for me too, it's been a bike that passed be my a few times and i always just missed out on the chance to afford one.. so this deal has been a real treat for once. Shame you can't buy them over there, that seems ridiculous for just import tax.. but then governments all over the world are laying into us all for taxation now days.. Take care and stay safe mate!
I’m not loving the fairing. It makes it look heavy and frumpy like a Harley. The Rocket is such a unique looking bike it is a bit of a shame to cover it up with a lump of black. I also think the Rockets look so much nicer on a colour rather than black. Maybe consider a colour change to make it beautiful? Looking forward to the Dino and root cause on the stutter.
Thanks mate.. as much as i love Black bikes.. i think i kind of agree with you.. the bodywork is Huge, and a clever combination could really lift it. !
Not a fan of the batwing fairing but I think I would be patient and ride the bike with and without for a while just to see if function over form influences your final decision. ..it’s a beast of a bike and it’s going to be interesting to follow the restoration project/process.
I agree. I ride Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster naked because I think the look will be spoiled by a fairing. Don't want a cop bike. But on open road riding at speed it would be a lot more comfortable to have a fairing, so it depends on what you want to use the bike for. Urban cruising = no fairing. Long distance touring = fairing.
Jackie, my late partner always wanted a Honda Firestorm. One day she wandered into our local Honda dealer and there was a perfect, dark blue 'Storm. She fell in love. The bike was three years old. When she bought it she was amazed that it was going to have it's first dervice, at 500 miles, and it's first MoT! Apparently the first owner bought the bike and then changed his job and was working away so the bike spent three years in his heated conservatory. Wasn't she a lucky girl.
@@Moonfleet41 she did. She had the bike for ten years and 40,000 miles. She rode very little in our area and mainly went to Scotland and France. Sadly, in 2015 she contracted motor nurone disease and had to stop riding. She passed in 2017.
@@motostroller We're so sorry to hear that, It sounds like you both shared some wonderful times and made wonderful memories. making the very most of life becasue we never know how long we have.. Take care and God Bless.. D&Pxx
That is crying out for a dry ice blast!! And would bring something new to the channel. Fairing…. Hideous, however expensive is. Sell it on and it gives extra pennies for future expenses. Also Tune Ecu is your friend for one of these, diagnostics, testing, reading & resetting fault codes & mapping. Yes you can’t beat a rolling road live map but again it’s all good new and interesting content.
I rode the original Rocket 3 for about 500 miles. Unique sound. It's quite unlike other bikes. But the excessive weight was ot my cup of tea. Well, I do like Gold Wings and they're even heavier ;-) I'm curious how your project Rocket turns out to be. After all your projects I predict: better than original. Happy days with the triple, Günter/Nürnberg
Thanks mate, it's gonna be fun to ride, just gotta get through the tidy up first, not planning it as a long project as want to get some miles in before the weather closes in!
@@Moonfleet41 Oh, I thought it'd be a long project. Get it working and ride it, the leafs should be blown away soon. Best time to ride of the year, not many other bikers around. Günter
No doubt re-chroming the affected parts would be hideosly expensive ?, maybe powfercoat all the chrome bits in a colour that will compliment the final colour of the bike-- when youve finished the Rocket youll have a basically brand new machine , you'll have to keep this one, its a great purchase-- hi to PP & all the best 👍 x
You're not wrong Geoff, the price of chrome plating is absolutely off the scale now... multiple times what it used to cost a decade ago, but powder coating is a lot cheaper and, of course, painting it is even cheaper still, so lots of options! Hope you're keeping well there, have a great weekend, D&Px
ditch the batwing fairing if its not your style! your bike! fund upgrades with proceeds from the fairing sale :) FWIW i think it looks terrible with the dual round headlights.
Keep the fairing, looks good on in my opinion, if selling the bike later on you have the options of a 2 x looking bike next potential owner might really like particularly with uk weather
Great project. I owned a V Max back in the day but like you, I’ve never ridden a Rocket. I know it’s subjective but I would lose the batwing. Put the money towards some of the parts you’ll need. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. My money is on scruffy injectors by the way
Looking forward to this one. That stutter, reminds me of a Yamaha I had with a faulty coil pack. It was only running on pot 2 intermittently. Though looking at the smoke from the headers, that one does seam to be on all 3. Depending on how hard the spark plugs are to get at, you could check them prior to its dyno trip. All the best with the repair. :)
Good point buddy, it is most certainly running on all three, and we're going to fit a full set of 6 new plugs at the Dyno day, they're not hard to get to once you lift the tank up!
I’m torn Del, love the front fairing for a touring type Rocket but our inner love for street fighters sways we to no fairing or, a small bobber type screen would do sweet! Equally selling that will aid your budget or extra mods… 🤞
All wise words John, you're dead right on the streetfighter DNA... the Rocket was built as a muscle bike and they generally don't have fairings... and good call on the budget, those tyres are mighty pricey! Are you going to the firework party bud?
@@Moonfleet41 I know your pain, just had to replace the tyres on the victory 😱 don’t think I’ll make the firework party, but can let you know. I can on the anniversary though 🤞.
There's quite a few people that own these that spend £1500 on a Zard exhaust and then at the point of mapping it decide to try to save a few hundred pounds and just download a map without having it properly tuned on a dyno which is mind boggling. It could just need to be remapped properly.
I have a 2012 Rocket iii roadster with the Corbin fairing and Beetle Bags. I love the look But the faring makes it hard to get to the Key hole. At night it's almost impossible Without a light To find the key hole. I think the fairing looks good as long as you also have the bags.
I ride a 2015 R3T, there are a few mods that will get give you enough power to get in trouble. They are wonderful bikes that demand skill and respect to ride. I am going to enjoy this series. Welcome to the world of Captains. Corbin is top of the line. I would hold onto the fairing till the project is done. Also, if you decide to sell it that would be a great companion piece. If you need any info let me know.
Thank you so much Billy, very kind of you, I'm looking forward to getting the tyres changed as they are very old and not very grippy, and getting out for a good long ride on it... having it dyno set up shortly, and then it'll be at it's best, can't wait!
I’d run it with the fairing and without it and then make up my mind. Interesting project and lucky find but these Rocket 3s never floated my boat. As I’m sure you know, a Rocket III should have BSA on the tank. The flipping cheek of it!
Del, Nice ride, sounds like the injectors are dirty. Throw a bottle of a good injector cleaner with some fresh fuel and ride it. Might be a real easy fix. Good luck with your project.. Oh and get some Dunlop mutants on there, they would be awesome on that bike.. cheers.
Thanks Rick, I'm making some plans with the Dyno guy, we're going to drop the injectors in a cleaning tank, then check the spray pattern on them just to be sure... and also I think that leak is always playing it's part in it too, so may whip the system off before I go and seal it up properly, no point it taking it there with a known fault I can fix! And with the tyres, I love Mutants, but sadly not available in these giant sizes... in fact at the moment, only 1 tyre is!
@@Moonfleet41 Drats on the tyres, wish you the best of luck on getting those injectors out. I used kroil oil a lot in the aircraft industry. Airplanes get a lot of corroded screws and bolts. We also used it for a corrosion prohibter on bolts and screws going back on, like antiseze. Works great.. giving you and Penny the best.
Personally, I'd remove the fairing. Shame the previous owner didn't spend 10 minutes covering the bike in ACF/XCP, etc, every now and then. Nice project bike.
What a bike. I think that noise is the fuel pump priming and the stepper motor on the butterflies in the throttle body, same sound comes from my Tiger 800.
Nice one, Del - interesting bike. What I know about Rocket III's you could write on the back of a stamp! Same as you: fairing looks awful, looked better without it. If it's got money in it I'd either sell it to fund the project or keep it, as I don't think it'll lose value. But definitely looks better without it. All imho...
Just remembered the General, Del. That was a triple, I believe. I have never owned a triple ( I thought about customising a K75 a few times, though), and I would love to own one day for that unique sound and drivability. Yeah, the General, what a tiger that was!
Mate what a find.. Sounds like a zx14r from 2014 I picked up.. it had a similar problem as what you’re describing.. For me it ended up being a weak impeller in the fuel pump, and 1 injector with a voltage issue.. But once I got some revs in her she ran like a bat out of hell.. I did also run a bit of E85 through her and she was a wee bit better but eventually I replaced the pump and all the injectors. Like you I only had 4K miles on the clock.. Looking forward to watching this project. Cheers to you and Penny!
Thanks mate, it sounds like you made some big investments in the ZX, well worth it as they are true and finest Japanese muscle... Great tip on the E85 too!
Mmm, loose the fairing. I'd love to ride a Rocket 3, not sure I want to own one. I had some heath issues some time back, what I thought would be a few months became 5-6 years. Unable to hibernate my Street Triple, it suffered in my shed. Battery & fuel tank ruined, with help from a neighbour and an understanding wife it was recommissioned over a winter in our living room.
Excited to see this build! As for the fairing, I would ride it for bit with and then without. Whichever ride is best and most comfortable, go with that. I get that appearance matters, but riding matters more…..
I don't think the fairing matches the look and lines of the Rocket but... I would ride it first with the fairing on and see if there is a reason to chuck or keep other than looks.
@@Moonfleet41 Bikes and Women have some similarities, often the odd goofy ones are a comfortable ride and built for the real world, the really beautiful ones are often fret with comprises. No matter the looks though, if you spend time with them, invest time and money and ride them often they are happy.... both bikes and women.
Can't wait for this, I have a 2006 Rocket 3 that had been left in a garage on a farm. I like the bat wing but it looks like the person really wanted a Harley so I would get rid and repkace with a Triumph summer screen if you can get hold of one.
Thanks mate, strange how they all seem to get left in barns... good luck with yours, I hope it all goes smoothly... I like the idea of a summer screen!
A fuel injector clean for sure, I made a fuel intector cleaner from a kit I got from eBay and made my own 9v switch box instead of using the 12v battery from a car or bike.
This should be a fun project, Del. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with the bike. And I'm anxious to see the restoration process on that old chrome, too. As for the fairing, yes as fairings goes it's high quality, but IMO, it's just not the right fit for that bike. I think you could do something far more minimalist that would be a better fit for the styling on this bike. Just my .02. Either way, really looking forward to the project! Take care... --D
Thanks so much Don. Glad im enlisting some professiinal help on the resto, that chrome looks far from savable, but we'll see... i hear nothing but good things about the detail trade.. shou;d be a challenge for him for sure. Thank you as always for your kind support.
Maaate, on the chrome try Coca Cola & fine steel wool. If you're planning on touring and for winter keep the batwing (in winter I use wind breakers on the hands only and in spring they come off as Sydney summer is 30º+ C), otherwise around town and Saturday & Sunday riding to a cafe & lunch with Penny on the back then jettison it.
Thanks mate, I've heard about coke and wire wool, plus coke and tin foil on chrome so will be giving that a try, am sure the valeters have some tricks up their sleeves! And we do get some hot summers here, but 30+ is rare!!
Id say aside from looks, Ride it all day with and all day without the fairing. From personal experience, Ill take the comfort over aesthetics any day of the week. It does make it look like an entirely different bike, I wouldnt know its a rocket 3 if you rode past me with that fairing on.
Looking forward to seeing how you get on with the new project . Rode a new GT this year and was impressed . For “a big old elephant “ , they ride really well . Personally I would run without that fairing . Makes it look like a HD copy 🤷🏼♂️ We are all different …👍
Thank you Michael, i knew you'd have a balanced view.. not riden the GT myself, but this one is truly an elephant for sure..lol! See you at the Xmas meet maybe..!
I had a '91 Harley that had been neglected for years, the chrome was similar to yours. I used 0000 steel wool and lubricated it with spray wax. It came out really nice and I did not have to spend a lot of money.
Wow your garage is huge! Haven’t watched your vids for a long time, last time I watched a video you were in a small garage with white walls about a eighth the size of your place now!👍🇨🇦🇬🇧!
Fantastic acquisition Del 👍🏼 IMHO sell the batwing to offset the cost of the refurb....big old 'elephant' 😂 needs slimming down to let the Britishness come through..... Also, drink some water mate....fingers look dehydrated if you don't mind me saying.😮
Awesome score of a new bike in the stable and I look forward to the many upcoming videos surrounding it!! To my eye she is a really great looking bike.....except for that bat-wing fairing! Now, I don't know which bike you've traded off for this but if you were gonna start using this for a long-range touring bike in place of the Gold Wing, you might want to keep that fairing on there!
Good points well made Allen, but it certainly won't be a touring bike in that way... I have the Harley perfectly set up for that with a fairing and bags and it makes over 50mpg being a modern M8 engine... but these Rockets are not known for their economy! ... maybe half as much as the Harley, at best, and have you seen the price of our gas lol lol Have a great weekend there, keep safe, D&Px
Love the quote at the start (Some people are just nasty and enjoy being that way). Love the massive machine! Was is that? 2 or 2.3 litre? If it were mine, I wouldn't have that fairing on, I might have another one though or just have it naked. Looking forward to the future videos on this one mate and, I wish you all the good luck with it.
Thanks Vince, just a thought for the day on the board, far too many bleeding hearts on social media these days and yes, with a dose of spite usually! Got some plans, will take you along with us!
So I'm looking to totally remove the chrome from my 1600 marauder, is this something that you can do yourself or would you suggest getting someone to do it? I'm new forest based so if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.
All the best on your new project bike , no doubt you will have it gleaming and running to perfection in no time mate . Regarding the fairing , i wouldn't of went out and bought one , but like you said , its quality , well made , expensive , and it looks good i think on the bike , so as you have it i would leave it on mate , Take care .
I like the fairing, it looks great on the bike!! But with or without the fairing I know that you gonna make it beautifull. Keep up the good work, greetings from Holland
I don't know, bro. The batwing is a little too Harley-ish. But having two headlights, it really looks like Darth Vader's helmet. In the end, it's up to you whether you keep it on the bike, but me...? If it is that pricey, I'd sell it to pay for a rechrome, if needed.
Good point Sir, it does have a bit of a Darth Vader vibe, and yes of course, it's a great way to raise the money for those tyres! Hope you're both keeping well there, have a great weekend!
I wasn't a huge fan of the fairing but throughout the video it grew on me. Without it I fear it would look too much like the BMW R1200 james bond bike and I wasn't a fan of that machine much. My vote would be to keep it on the bike for what its worth.
Lovely thing! My 2010 Speed Triple R2D2'S after shutdown too. Fuel purge, I believe. Looking forward to the next videos as I have some chrome issues too.
Another vote here for selling that fairing and putting it towards the refurb. Is a batwing fairing cool? Yeah sure. Does a Rocket 3 suit one? Absolutely not. Its like putting a Toyota MR2 body on your Ferrari.
This looks like a fascinating project Del, will definately look forward to seeing it develop. Thought your forensic run through was just brilliant. Not sure on the Fairing yet?
First thing, never seen a batwing installed in person. More so get the idea when the weather starts to turn you install it and summer take it off... but this looks like neither of those happened. Corrison like living next to the sea.
I think maybe more like ridden in the wet and put away without bothering to clean or dry it off.. along with 6 accumulated years in storage. and knowing where is lived geographically, it wasn't near the sea, but was a rural area all the same.
Nice pick up. Look forward to progress. My 2p - sell the fairing and put the proceeds into the resto/build. IMHO it looks way better without it, saves weight and stops the bike looking like a Harley knockoff/clone.
Interesting point mate, my first impressions were that it was a cheap Harley knock-off lookalike, but is in fact better quality than the bike itself... it's astonishingly well made, so I'm really appreciating this input from everyone!
This should be interesting. Personally, I'd sell the bat wing fairing and put the money towards the refurbishment.
That's a great plan mate!
I don´t mind the looks of this one, it´s pretty sleek.
That said, I´m always concerned about how effective these things are. I´d rather just feel the wind, rather than having any kind of fairing create buffeting around my head.
I have did the same, i just love Rocket 3, maby next time, who know😇😋😉
What a great project 👏.
🤩🤌jmho.
Batwing...needs to go. Those Corbin fairing is nice. Make it look the way you want it to. (Ide remove it)
I immediately thought the bike looked better when you took the fairing off.
Nice one, I would remove the fairing not something I would have on the bike
Good points well made mate!
Batwing dresses the bike, nicely. I didn't even bat an eye at it. It makes up for the chrome radiator.
Great project bike Del ! Can't wait for future videos on it ! Not a big fan of the batwing fairing , it does not suit the bike and i think the Rocket 3 looks better naked 👍
Thanks mate, it's interesting how it's dividing opinion and I'm slightly with you on that!
Wow what a fabulous story, thanks for sharing, a testament to Harley Davidsons' build quality, wishing you many happy miles!
@@kiwimunster Thanks mate, I'll drop them a line!
I saw Petty playing with their hair in the motorcycle mirror @ 1:48. She always makes me smile. 😂
Thanks for sharing mate, that's exactly the best advice, patience and perservance over force wins every time!
So many people spray everything, not the faces and the threads.
Thanks for those infos mate... mmuch appreciated!
: )xx
Ah, god bless Rat Queen, great to see her recent video, which means she's alive and well and enjoying life in sunny Scotland!
Cool bike, luv it!
my 2 cents: Keep the Batwing on the shelf, use it occasionally, don't fit another screen, sell it with the bike.
That bike looks really kewl sporty looking . I wouldn’t mind doing a cleanup project like that. See what you come up with !! Wink
Thanks for your kind words as always, it's going to be fun, and im really looking forward to riding it.
Lose the fairing, sell it out the cash towards the bike, another option is to black it out lose the chrome mad max edition.....lol
I'm liking your thinking!
The bike looks much better without the fairing, the chrome isn't helping it, paint it or powder coat the chrome bits.
And finally that has got to be the ugliest exhaust system I have ever seen.
Definitely screen off
Have to say not a massive fan of the front fairing, I think it needs a small screen at the minimum just to act as a windbreak.
As Marvin, the paranoid android said:
"Life, don't talk to me about life".
But alas, I came to my senses 😅
I did, however, fit a rather nice mini GPS speedo today.
@@Moonfleet41 They are different bikes that’s true. I like the idea of a monster engine with a stripped down roadster feel though.
I believe the R2D2 sound is the stepper motor that controls the throttle position, it's a little worm gear by the throttle bodies. Triupmh used that a bunch in those years, I had that on a Tiger 800. It does it at start up and when you turn it off, the later being more noticable.
Thanks mate, interesting information, I've learning about my bike every day!
Had a 2011 Classic, great bikes but really hard to get Triumph accessories. 2nd hand market for bits can be expensive! Get rid of the faring and go for the small fairing/wind deflector. I have one if you want it!
Hi Dave, do you have an email, or would you prefer to email us on the channel address, we can talk about that wind deflector! Thanks, appreciated.
PS
Great play at 12:27(R2D2)😂😅😂
Thanks for this too❤
Hi Delboy, I don't know if you have sea foam there but if you do per instructions put that in the tank.
@@Moonfleet41 Thanks mate. Your experience is priceless.

My word, what an amazing find, we hope Jackie got to enjoy some wonderful miles on, bless you both, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 she did. She had the bike for ten years and 40,000 miles. She rode very little in our area and mainly went to Scotland and France. Sadly, in 2015 she contracted motor nurone disease and had to stop riding. She passed in 2017.

My money is on scruffy injectors by the way
Thanks mate, I reckon you're right on the injectors and good call for using the batwing for the budget!
Blimey mate, in a week or so the dyno video will be out and you'll be amazed how right you are, bang on the nail!
I have a 2012 Rocket iii roadster with the Corbin fairing and Beetle Bags. I love the look But the faring makes it hard to get to the Key hole. At night it's almost impossible Without a light To find the key hole. I think the fairing looks good as long as you also have the bags.
Thanks for sharing!
Ha ha, you are dead right of course, totally stole the name unoposed, oh well, sadly too late to do much about it now..!!
Del,
Nice ride, sounds like the injectors are dirty.
@@Moonfleet41
Drats on the tyres, wish you the best of luck on getting those injectors out. I used kroil oil a lot in the aircraft industry. Airplanes get a lot of corroded screws and bolts. We also used it for a corrosion prohibter on bolts and screws going back on, like antiseze. Works great.. giving you and Penny the best.
Thanks mate, I never thought of Kroil as an anti-seize and I can see it would be awesome, I'd swap it for every other tin of spray I own!
Personally, I'd remove the fairing. Shame the previous owner didn't spend 10 minutes covering the bike in ACF/XCP, etc, every now and then. Nice project bike.
You're right mate, that would have saved it, but I guess we never know what people's circumstances are!
So cool! I would have kept the feiring, and with the rest of the bike fixed, make it suit the bike. 👍
What a bike. I think that noise is the fuel pump priming and the stepper motor on the butterflies in the throttle body, same sound comes from my Tiger 800.
Thanks mate.. good to know.
On a purely practical note, If you ride in winter I'd keep it and add heated grips and can always remove for Summer and or add some graphics
All imho...
Thanks Paul, it seems to be a general opinion to use it as a budget for the project!
Keep the fairing. Itll be appreciated when its on the motorway. Could do a bit of pinstriping unless you want the stealth look.👍
Good point well made mate!
Just remembered the General, Del. That was a triple, I believe.
I have never owned a triple ( I thought about customising a K75 a few times, though), and I would love to own one day for that unique sound and drivability.
Yeah, the General, what a tiger that was!
No screen....
Looking forward to this one Del, definitely without the fairing, I think if the chrome is to far gone then all blacked out would look great 👍
Thanks mate, you're running ahead of me, I was already thinking to, maybe, black the chrome, rather than the outlay of re-plating it if I have to!
I'm actually excited about this one. Particularly interested in any metal and plastic chrome restoration tips for my Suzuki Intruder.
Sounds like the perfect wife you have there Russ.. bike resto in the living room.. Awesome.. !
Excited to see this build! As for the fairing, I would ride it for bit with and then without. Whichever ride is best and most comfortable, go with that. I get that appearance matters, but riding matters more…..
Good point, thanks for sharing mate!
I don't think the fairing matches the look and lines of the Rocket but... I would ride it first with the fairing on and see if there is a reason to chuck or keep other than looks.
Fair enough, good practical thinking.
Good advice mate!
@@Moonfleet41Have Fun !
Sadly can’t make the Xmas lunch but lets catch up in the new year 👍
@@michaelmam That's a shame, would have been nice to see you, let's catch up in the New Year!
What a find and you’re favourite colour too. I can tell ur a little excited! 😮 Which bike did you have to let go for this wonder?
Thanks mate, with the colour, am I that predictable these days lol
I had a '91 Harley that had been neglected for years, the chrome was similar to yours. I used 0000 steel wool and lubricated it with spray wax. It came out really nice and I did not have to spend a lot of money.
Thanks for that cool tip mate, much appreciated.
Wow your garage is huge! Haven’t watched your vids for a long time, last time I watched a video you were in a small garage with white walls about a eighth the size of your place now!👍🇨🇦🇬🇧!
Firstly drain all the fuel out of the bike fit a new fuel filter minimal cost see how it runs if not happy clean the injectors. Ps. Fuel use E5.👍
ALWAYS use E5... i don't think ive ever bought E10 since it's been out!
Fantastic acquisition Del 👍🏼
IMHO sell the batwing to offset the cost of the refurb....big old 'elephant' 😂 needs slimming down to let the Britishness come through.....
Also, drink some water mate....fingers look dehydrated if you don't mind me saying.😮
Gotta love Triumph R2D2s - sorry, ECUs 🤣. As a Sprint GT owner and a huge fan of the triple lump, I'm following this story!
Welcome aboard mate, thanks for your support!
@@Moonfleet41 Ahhh, makes sense! Regardless, she's going to be an awesome cruiser and in that sense would certainly look better without the fairing!!😎
Regarding the fairing , i wouldn't of went out and bought one , but like you said , its quality , well made , expensive , and it looks good i think on the bike , so as you have it i would leave it on mate ,
Take care .
Interesting viewpoint mate, I see what you mean!
Massively looking forward to this Del, in your hands it’ll be like box fresh after no time.
Thanks mate, that's very kind!
Fairing is OK, would look great with some pin stripes. The whole bike wants TLC, which is in the right hands. Great video
I like the fairing, it looks great on the bike!! But with or without the fairing I know that you gonna make it beautifull. Keep up the good work, greetings from Holland
Thank you for your kind words Andre!
Thanks mate, am glad it's a normal Triumph thing, thought I maybe had a little hamster in there with a drum kit lol
Another vote here for selling that fairing and putting it towards the refurb. Is a batwing fairing cool? Yeah sure. Does a Rocket 3 suit one? Absolutely not. Its like putting a Toyota MR2 body on your Ferrari.
Ha ha.. perfect analogy..! makes dead plain sense.
This looks like a fascinating project Del, will definately look forward to seeing it develop. Thought your forensic run through was just brilliant. Not sure on the Fairing yet?
Thanks mate, glad you're looking forward to it, it won't be a long project, just the major jobs, a Dyno run and a clean up...
@Moonfleet41
Sounds good Del 👍
Nice looking bike, always like the look of them,I think the fairing is to big for it and it hides the good look of the bike
Beautiful find Del, I say a small fly screen would probably look better on this machine. And maybe powder coat the chrome bits to black finish.
100% that bat wing fairing should stay on the bike. Love it.
I would keep the fairing, ads to the character. Bet it make riding it also allot nicer and more comfortable.
Thank you Shaun, it's wonderful how divided opinions are on it!
What a find you lucky geezer!
In my opinion Ebay the fairing or stick it on the forums
Good thought!
