What a fantastic video of a look into what’s involved in tuning a modern fuel injected bike.
It was a pleasure to have you both at the workshop for the day & show you what I do for a living.
So glad I managed to get her running how she should & it’s a night & day difference(you could here that on the dyno) awesome result & video 👍
John, Thank you so much for a wonderful day, for the Education, the laughs and the hospitality... it's been so long since all those years ago we worked together, and seems like hardly any time has passed.. See you again soon buddy.. next time ill bring something that doesn;t take 3 people to muscle into the lift..lol!!
Excellent video Del & Penny. Very interesting to watch John do his magic on the AFR cells and how sweet it sounds and pulls now, job well done. Can't wait to hear about the figures, after seeing how lean it was running. Lots of people seem to cut corners and not get the tune the done and just get a canned map to save a bit of money. Like you said, you are not getting 100% out of the parts and money you have put in. I know when I had a custom tune on my car, it was like night and day. Have a great relaxing weekend and take care. Cheers
Sure thing mate, you pay 100% for the parts, why wouldn't you want 100% performance from them! I can imagine it's the same with any vehicle with fuel injection. Thanks for watching... have a great weekend, hope you're getting some sunshine there... we're not, been overcast and grey for days now!! Ride safe, D&Px
Holy Pistons Batman ! That could have ended badly. John is one very talented dude. What a nice set-up he has too where it's all portable. I bet his skills are in high demand. Thanks to John and you for showing us this interesting process. I'm also amazed at how John walked that big girl up onto the dyno. Great stuff all around ! A great weekend to you and Penny. ❤👍👍
Sure thing Rick, it could have been a nasty moment of melting internals, seeing the AFR run up to 19% is a bit scary and exactly the reason why we abandoned the run and didn't try to rev it out any more...! Yep, John's a great bloke, known him for many years... Thanks for your support as ever, have a great weekend yourself! D&Px
Very interesting episode. I love stuff like this.
I used to run a Thundermax on my ‘08 Softail.(Programmable ECU via my laptop.)
I had it taken out to 103CID and had different cams fitted; a J.E.T air filter and some other stuff.
I had it dynoed and used TTS Mastertune software on the H-D ECU. Ran great- absolutely superb. Then not so great with stuttering like yours.
Turned out to be cracked porcelain on the front plug due to the vibration from the high rpm’s on the Dyno.
Thanks for sharing Nick, sounds like you got a great result in the end!
Awesome! The difference in sound before and after is testament to the improvements made. Great work from John, well done Del.
Sure was Dave and even more so on the road, it rides smooth as satin and literally yanks your arms out even just off tick over! Full analysis and figures in the next video!
@@Moonfleet41 In a London boy's voice " Eh mister, ow many horses, ow fast is it now ? "
@@russcattell955i Full analysis video up next mate... In a Lahndon boy's voice 'old yer awsis guv.. once fing at a time innit" ! lol.
Thanks dave,it was such a notable difference it was crazy & a pleasure to do for derek,he’s made a fantastic video
Misty morning ride and a reward waiting at the dyno. Well done, mate. You were more succesful than me, got a flat rear tyre on my CRF 300 on the gravel. Günter/Nürnberg PS: I will definitely check John's channel.
Sorry to hear about your flat tyre, it's always a pain... hope you got it fixed!
The last time I was at a dyno was when a friend of mine had just passed his test and was on the 33bhp restriction for a couple of years.
I helped him get a bike, so he plumped for a Yamaha 600 radion. I made my own washers to restrict air flow in the airbox.
Happy days after the dyno!
I bet that ride home felt like a whole new bike! Have a great weekend you two.
😎🤙🏽🏍
It most certainly did mate.. what a transformation..!
My Rocket 3 2009 had a similar issue and after sitting. Then following a lot of chasing down, it turned out to be a dirty injector.
What technique overcame the issue, injection cleaning fluid? I suppose it's the equivalent issue we all had with jets and float bowls of yesteryear.

Wow, that 19 to 1 AFR at the beginning of the tune, after the throttle restrictions were removed was Scary! I bet your lower digestive tract orifice was clenched TIGHT!
Not just mine, but John's as well!... he didn't even push it past 3rd gear or half-throttle, had to put some cursory guess increases in there straight away just to cool it down and then he could start building the map once it was safe to rev round the clock!
@@Moonfleet41 Tight as a banjo string eh? Dueling sphincters, you might say...
Can't wait for the video with the dyno sheet :) By the way, thanks for including the misty ride! Enjoy the weekend, D&P :)
@@tommylitchfield3450 Thankd mate... once the big ole' gurl is all done, ill do a few Ride videos at the end, make it a full start to finish story..!
Great video to watch, its a dark art to be a successful dyno tuner, did you get a bhp figure at the end . I remember when I first took the Fatboy out after its furst winter hibernation & it was stuttering & as soo as I put a fuel treatment/ stabilizer in it it cleaned all the gummed up injectors . Youve got virtually a brand new bike now Del , good on you guys 👍👍👍
Thanks Geoff, you're absolutely right, it is a dark art... and yes we have a full dyno print out, will be doing a detailed analysis of the results in the next video! Take care and have a great weekend, D&Px
@Moonfleet41 thanks both.👍xx
Great video been following this , only had quick look at this video , what map was PCV running , was it actually reducing fueling ? . Can it increase fueling with correct PCV map ? even with stock ECU map , I'm little confused , did he just increase fueling on ECU , will have to re watch video . Its just I'm looking at getting power commander PCV for my Thruxton 1200 to get round it running to lean at low throttle once its up to temp been offered S/H one with good custom map on and hoping map will work on my bike . I'm not after more power as bike runs great when opened up its just the low throttle that's erratic plus loads of popping on low rpm over run , got cash for day on dyno just want a cheap fix lol
Sounds exactly like the same problems i was having, yes the map was all over the place, fuelling way below even the factory AFR... all i can say is the same message we left at the end of the video... it is 'essential' you get your PC5 custom mapped to YOUR bike.. also there is the important issue of removing throttle restrictions if there are any on your Thrux'. why not drop John a line, his contant details are listed in the description under the video.. he woul be happy to help..!
What year is your thruxton? I used tune ecu to just restrict the secondary throttles on the rocket 3 & then used the pcV to map the fuel map as it’s much easier to map the fuel map with pcV & it was fitted so we made use of it.
With your thruxton you could use tune ecu to map it fully,I’ve done a few speed twins with tune ecu & got good results👍drop me an email if I can help anymore, cheers John
@@jbsworkshop Its 2016 Thruxton 1200s will drop you email is it ok to drop my email in comments ? I do have tune ECU
@@Moonfleet41 Pretty sure theirs throttle restrictions on Thruxton , was going to give PCV custom map that's already on it a try first , I know it realy should be customized to my bike , just thought may get lucky . Will contact John in morning getting late here , says he's had good results with speed twins (same engine )
@@nounoufriend1442 Most have them from the factory as an emissions thing.
Brilliant vid Del,can't wait to hear about the figures..surely with the milage on this bike she's got to be a keeper?
I'd like to think so for sure, and yes indeed, will do a full analysis of the bhp and torque figures, right across the range not just the top numbers, it's making incredible power now just off tick over... truly an unbelievable transformation... next video!
Great vid but what were the final figures?? Keeping us in suspense..!!!
Not at all Duncan, I promise I'll make it worth the wait, I don't just want to say the 'big number' because pure bhp on a bike like this isn't as relevant as torque and indeed where that torque hits most, so next video will be a full analysis of the print out with some deeper explanations of building the fuel map and what it means for ridability on the road!
@@Moonfleet41thanks Del, that will be very interesting
This is a PROPER job who helps to understand how bad tuned are the bikes at the show room floor.
The other precious lesson is about the Power Comander virtues....
Cheers.
Sure thing mate.. a Power Commander is no use unless it's properly set up!
Great video Del, really interesting to see how the professional tuner works and the results that can be achieved. As you said in the video you need these guys if you want to attain the best results. Did you get a bhp reading? Bet the ride home was a pleasure.
Yes Andy, it was an epic ride home, absolute night and day transformation... Full results analysis video coming up next !
Really interesting and informative video Del never knew there was so much involved in tuning. I did do a TTP tune 4 on my T100 2014 and what a difference that made but I can only imaging the difference on a beast like this. Ride like the wind Del boy😂
There are some great options out there for Triumph tuning for sure mate.. and always an improvement over the factory tune aye ! and yeah, it does indeed ride like the wind now..lol!
That must be night and day different. When I recommissioned the viffer, first thing I did was get it up on a rolling road. 8yrs standing still. I'm kidding myself if I think I'm going to get that running like it used to. And often a rolling road is the only real solution.
Need to see a couple of pulls on it now... ;o)
It makes all the difference mate.. nothing beats getting a custom map made and fine tuning for full performance aye !
Good job the fuel tank's vented, or those run-ups would've sucked it flat . . . what a beast!
Healthy restraint going home, wise man. Couldn't really hear much from the engine's 'new' running order though, mainly due to all that manic laughter & hollerin' from somewhere above the saddle.
Next step of course, is machining up some suitable blower pulleys . . (or haven't you told Penny yet? : )xx
Ssh, don't give it away, she thinks they're for a garden ornament to help feed the visiting hedgehogs.. and yes, it does make one chuckle a little now..lol!
On my 2012 speedy a power Commander was not needed. Triumph allowed you to remap your system without extras. TCU out of the state Washington did the remapping "great job" and redline was 8,000 and now it's set at 8,300 RPM Old speediy forever
Fascinating Del...thanks for sharing. Really hope you're gonna describe your feelings on riding that beast pre and post dyno!
Next video mate, a full analysis of the figures and just what it means in real life on thw road..!
What an awesomely different ride after that exhaustive reprogramming.....worth every penny in my estimation! Cheers to you and John, both!!
Very much so Allen, what a transformation, so much grunt from almost idle, it pulls like a diesel truck now...lol!
@@Moonfleet41 Ha ha, yeah I bet!!
Now she is a ROCKETSHIP ! So nice to have someone that knows how to unleash the potential of your Triumph. The Rocket's are absolutely cool..........and fast.
What a wonderfully apt and correct way to put it, 'unleashing the potential'... the bike was probably functioning at, maybe, less than 50% of what it's capable of now, it's all mine to play with lol
I'm not a fan of ECU's on vehicles, I'm too old to trust them. Great video and fascinating insight into dyno tuning. Stonking bike. I wish you the good health to enjoy it. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. 🧔👍✌ PS. Do you think John's developed a particular muscle group to get the big girl onto the rig? :)
Thanks mate, it was a great day of learning and we had a fabulous time!
Nice one Del 👍
Bike now sounds as awesome as it looks 👍
Fantastic view from the 'cockpit'👌
Subscribed to JB👍
Keep up the fantastic work Del 'n' Pen 👍
Thanks for the sub to JB Paul, it does indeed sound and ride so much better now.. Thank you for yout kind support mate.. always good to hear from you. D&Px
Hi Del dropped ur friend a sub etc top job there mate the bike running sweet nice what a beast 😎👊
Thanks for the sub 👍it totally transformed it
@@jbsworkshopno worries buddy always swear by Del he’s top bloke I’ll be watching ur channel
Interesting vid, the old girl sounded so much sweeter after some ‘treatment’. Any chance on a peek at the bhp & torque figures produced on the dyno, really curious to find out the grunt factor she has ? 😊
Some of those wee roads at the start looked almost treacherous, add in a stuttering throttle…..ummm……not fun methinks 🫣
Not fun indeed, slimey wet country lanes, 13 year old tyres, and all that Torque... positively chuckleworthy..lol! Full analysis video coming up next Nick.. should be worth the wait !
What a beast. Now waiting to see who's the first to make one into a hardtail lowrider chopper with springers up front. 💯
Ha ha.. now THAT would be a challenge to ride..lol!
@Moonfleet41 probably insane enough already in fairness! Good luck to you with this crazy device! Love it.
I bet we only saw the censored version of the ride home! Seemed like chalk and cheese compared to the way it ran before. 👍
Well, with 13yr old tyres on damp country lanes, that pretty much was the ride home lol but will admit to a little squirt, or two, on the dry dual carriageway bit lol
Brilliant Del. Just subscribed to JBs website. Unfortunately here in Canada I can't use his services but look likes lots of great information .
Thank you for subbing to John's channel, he more than deserves it, a genuine guy, with huge talent and knowledge. Shame you can't use his services but there is still a wealth of information he posts up that can help the online world..!
Very interesting video, a good tune is worth the money spent for sure. Keep the videos coming of this bike 👍
Thanks Herbie, wise words indeed, it is an investment in performance for sure!
Brilliant video & great to see a real professional at work👍
Owners... we're a dangerous bunch!
Well, i was 1/2 right, it was a lean issue but not from the exhaust ;) nice to see a dyno tune in progress as its completed.
Yes indeed mate, a long day, masses of data and learned so much about the process, I'd no idea it was such painstaking and complicated work!
Brilliant stuff, Del - the dyno scene's very interesting!
Testimony to the fact that bolting on some generic gizmo can be hugely counter-productive.
Absolutely right mate, like the old cliche, power is nothing without control!
I’m interested in why the fueling was modified via the Dynojet rather than via Tune Ecu? It seems like an additional thing that’s not really required
That was fascinating. And a breath of fresh . . . fuel for the Trumpet!
Sure thing guy, it seems it desperately needed it!
So did the baffle go back in? I ask because in an earlier video it was removed because it was too loud. I shall also be contacting JB to get my trike tined, I doubt it will go on the Dyno but to have the throttles at 100% all the way through would nmake a difference. Cannot wait for the next installment.
No mate, we've relegated the baffle, too restrictive on a 3-into-1, and it's not so loud out on the road! Do chat to John, am sure he can help you in some way!
What were the final HP and TQ values?
Making a full video up next to reveal the full figures right across the range, not just the top numbers, along with some deeper explanations of the process of building the custom map and the gains made... just editing now!
Power under the line... nice and useable power.
Seems like it had 2 maps and the throttle restrictions are like a rain mode.
Brilliant video. So much info. Pleased both my MK1 Bandits are carbs. 😆
Great video. Huge change, nice to hear the engine revving so cleanly. Well done John, he sure knows his stuff. Was the Db killer put back in?
No mate.. that tiny 1" tube was causing far too much restriction, so it's a shelf souvenir now.! and yeah, rivs all the way clean around the clock in every gear now, all the throttle restrictions removed.
But it's going to be uncomfortably noisy. That exhaust system wasn't worth the money.😢
What a set up, well done that man! 👌🏻 I bet it’s a completely different ride now 🙌🏻
It most certainly is mate, well worth the long day.!
Now all it needs are custom cams from Neville Lush Racing
Ive been looking forward to this one bruv. The Beast is a Bute. I.know you'll love it. Its a shame it's this time of year bruv. Be safe
yeah, ainit just mate.. was hoping for some sunny miles beforer the salt lands... but hey ho..!
I bet that was a satisfying ride home. The beast just needed more juice. Well done.
Exactly that Randy, they're nothing without fuel!
Great video. Are you going to put the db killer back in? IMO it sounds a bit trashy with the full open exhaust. Cop bait as well!
John tuned my speed twin last year. Top bloke and extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommend
Couldn't agree more mate, what a mine of information and technical know-how... I worked with John when he was an Apprentice at our dealership and he hasn't changed a bit!
Knew it was the map! Seen loads of people do it! Spend £1500 on a full exhaust system and then don't want to spend £250 on getting it tuned. Mental.
Yes, and when you learn that this perticular exhaust system would have cost even more than that, AND the Power Commander too... makes you wonder why he didn't bother aye !
@Moonfleet41 yes sorry got excited and sent the message before the video had finished and then heard how much it all cost, nuts mate! Looking forward to seeing the figures you got plus how the bike now delivers the torque with the setup you've got. 👍🏻
What a video, awesome and my God was I helping you guys push that beast onto the ramp.😅.
Ha ha ha.. it was a struggle, and three attmepts..lol. "Must Try Harder" ! lol
@Moonfleet41 lol..must be the same weight as a small car.watch you don't put your back out mate.
It’s adding fuel because you opened the throttle blades in the ecu, more air = more fuel.
Espetacular motoca
Very good video, very interesting 👍
Many thanks mate!
I don't know how much you were charged but worth every penny.
You're absolutely right mate!
Fair play Del, you’re quite right.. It isn’t about one headline figure.. I’ll be patient
Little taster for you to make it worth the wait... it's making 90% of it's peak torque at 1700 rpm.... pulls like a bull dozer..lol!
Love carbs me 😀 a lot of investment in tooling and an expert at his game , cracking video People just buy extra s and expect the bikes EVU to do the changes 👍
Exactly that Tony, it's a hefty investment ot have it setup, and some people just default to the venerable "slip-on" to get the extra noise... they'll never know what they're missing with so much power and potential left on the table..
Clean to the redline, no where near it. Good turner absolutely but to say to the redline it was no where the limit.
Great video but c'mon...no numbers! 😢
Full analysis video with final results coming next!
Great video!! Did you put fresh plugs in at the dyno, or were you just inspecting them?
Yes indeed, a full new set of plugs!
Shame we didn't get to learn the BHP at the end, or did I miss it ?
No Tony, we kept that best till last... in fact, it's gonna be a whole video on Monday (just editing now), a full detailed analysis of the figures and what it truly means on the road... dyno charts are not just about the top bhp, this isn't a race bike, it's a pulling monster and my word, can it pull now! Full run down on Monday to make sense of it all!
I've always wondered how they map a power commander, thanks for the detailed explanation!
Most welcome mate, I had a day of learning too!
Brilliant
Love these videos problem here in Devon & Cornwall limited sadly very long waiting list
Hi mate, if that's the case, perhaps it's worth a trip to Dorset, why not drop John a line and see if you can get booked in!
Computer says YES!!!
I bet you enjoyed the ride home.
Not 'arf !
This is totally ironic and coincidental. Unbeknownst to me,, when I purchased my 012 Super Tenere it had a PC5 w/ optimizer.
I eventually had a crank no start situation.
Off to the dealer.
They diagnosed the PC5 failed. Removed it,,
and no more issues.
Interesting hmm??
What are your thoughts Del?
Thoughts on what Gabe?.. the fact that yours had failed?, who knows what made that happen, one can only speculate i guess. Power Commanders are certainly a well respected tuning tool, but like any tool, it needs to be working correctly and used correctly aye !!
@@Moonfleet41,, I wish I had an answer for the unit going south. 🤷♂️
Anyway, the S10 is running fine w/o the PC.
Thanks for your reply👍. Ride safe.
So..... how much power?? Holy moly
Full results analysus video coming next..!
Some tools there del you need to acquire.
would be nice to see the before and after power and torque figures please
Full results analysis video coming next !
It was running so lean I couldn’t get a wide open throttle before run for figures but Del will go through the graphs in the next video 👍
Del was there any discussion about the pc5 using the exhaust sensor to monitor and correct fuelling in real time to keep the afr balanced?
Please take off the stupid tank warning decal. It looks ridicules :) Otherwise good job :)
"Ridicules"🙂 !
What were the results???? Horse power and Torque values?
Full results analysis video coming next !
Wow just goes to show how important the right mapping is and how did it feel on the road after ?
Absolute night and day transformation mate, silky satin smooth, and wrenches your arms out right off tick over!
@Moonfleet41 very nice 👍
Will there be a video on how different the bike rode on the way home from the dyno ?
Next up we have a full analysis of the figures, a close look at the Dyno printout and what it means in real life riding rather than just the big numbers... and i can't ride it safely yet with those 13 year old cracked tyres.. once they're done and it's backl together.. then a ride out for sure. !
The big question was it up on torque and bhp .
Well not being able to rev it out beyond 4K (if you watched) it is naturally up on power and torque...significantly. Full results analysis video coming next !
@Moonfleet41 yes I watched it , I thought the whole point of the dyno was to sort the fueling and lift any restrictions on rpm.
Which is exactly what we did!
How was the ride home after the dyno/tuning? Livelier I’m sure.
Very much so, but at the same time, smooth and controlable!
Get auto tune tuner it learns while u drive
What is like to ride something with all that tourq?
Nailed it once on the way home.. (found a dry section of dual carriageway).. pretty awesome to say the least..!
Awesome 👍😎
Nothing can match a proper tune period, did you keep the power commander or only remapped from the ECU?
You're aboslutely right, and yes we get the PC5 in place, and happy with the results!
Why did you keep power commander? Isn't more fine tune when you flash ecu directly
Yes the ecu can be programmed direct on the rocket 3 & John also does direct ecu mapping on many other models.
He derestricted the secondary butterfly’s on the bike via the ecu direct but used the pcV to custom map the fuel map as it’s easier & he wanted to show the tuning link software working.
Hope that answers your question?
@Moonfleet41 it's better to remove secondary completely
What a difference! That looked like money well spent. When I fit the 4 into 1 onto the 'Busa, that looks like a plan. She feels a bit tired these days, I need to free up more ponies!
It's certainly money well spent to get it proper;ly set up and make the most of your investment... you won't regret it mate !
How much was that exhaust !! Jesus😩
Yes indeed, over £2,500 apparantly... glad it came withthe bike lol
Sooo- informative-Thanks.👌
