The AI that produces the results for the new generative erase tool is incredible - BUT, there's a catch. And if you don't understand this, you may not get the level of quality from the results you were hoping for.
Adobe Photoshop has been rocking this new generative technology for a while so it's great to see Luminar punching back with the first of it's own generative tools. GenErase is designed to replace the area we paint over with the click of a button. As a comparison, check out Adobe Photoshop's new AI tools at the best price here: bit.ly/CC-adobe
For the times when you want manual control over the erase process I've put this tutorial together on how to get the most from the clone tool: • How To Remove ANYTHING...

I never knew about that 'shift + click' trick to get a straight line, thanks!
Yeah it's a goody.
Thank You, I was wondering about how to deal with the pixel limit..
quite important info I would say. thanks Anthony
Thanks! You probably saved me a ton of headaches.
You sir, are a genius. That was literally the most helpful information about the GenErase tool on the internet. Believe me, I know, I looked.
Great to hear Brett. Thanks 👍
Very interesting video and nice explained! Thanks again Anthony!
As usual - a fantastic helpful instruction video. thank you....
... GenErase explained absolutely brilliantly. Thank you very much for this excellent video.
Wonderful video, thanks for the info will make photos so much better now that we know how to do it properly
Thanks for the follow up, really appreciate your time, effort and expertise. I have been binge watching your videos on Luminar Neo and they have made a huge difference for me in understanding all the different functions. Thanks again.
Awesome, thank you!
Brilliant! Thanks, Anthony.
Brilliant explanation. I’ve learned so much from you.
Great to hear! Thanks Pete.
Great tutorial Anthony. Many thanks for sharing this with us.
Huge difference!!! Thanks - very very helpful 👍
Very helpful. This is really useful information.
Very useful information but always get that from you and you very informative tutorials 👍
Thanks Anthony! So valuable information.
Many thanks for this most informative tutorial Anthony, it's very much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks Andre.
Thank you, this is very helpful and useful information, appreciate the advice!
That has been a great help. Thank you.
Anthony I was doing everything at once and like you said the quality was okay but not WOW, now this video opens up the WOW and improves the quality. Thank you for your time you put in to making these tutorial videos, they definitely help improve my skills.
Great to hear!
Brilliant explanation. Really looking forward to using the tool.
Hello Anthony, the small but also big difference that you should consider. Well explained by you and an impressive result. After some initial problems with GenErase on my PC, I'm now really excited. really excited. A really great tool! A really great tool! Best regards, Peter
Thanks, Anthony! I did a lot of trial en error in the few hours I've worked with GenErase. Unaware of the pixel limitations I started doing the erase bit by bit.. but forgot the reset button 😉 Now I learned a bit more from you... again!
Thank you for the update Anthony on the Gen Erase.
This technique is going to save not only myself but everyone else.
Your expertise in your video's helps me a lot.
Look forward to the next one.
Love this man, thanks for the heads up on this. Going to play about with the new tool later 🎉
That explains the problem that I had, thank you
Glad it helped
As ever. Brilliant and super useful. Just what I needed to know about this new tool. Thx Anthony 👍😊
Interesting to see the differences in decisions made by the AI in the one pass vs. multiple passes method. At first I thought they were two different perspectives of that photo! Since their AI obviously knows the number of pixels being replaced, it would be nice if it could return a tip or message advising that you've exceeded your pixel limit.
A good point ideed!
This has to be the most helpful instruction so far. Haven't seen pixel limits before. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful!
Always so informative. Thanks for sharing Anthony. 😎🙏
Very useful, thanks.
Great tip and explanation of what this tool does behind the scenes.
Very enlightening. All makes sense now. Thank you.
Great Video! Perfrect timing - now I'm ready to use the tool :)
Awesome. I probably would have done things this way anyway but mainly because it would produce faster results (I'm used to that from the standard erase tool). Very good information to know though and excellent explanation.
video explains how too use it, many thanks.
Important information, thanks Anthony! I've been playing with some images where I've previously used the clone tool, and to get the same accuracy with GenErase is so much quicker, even though you have to wait a bit.
Great stuff. Thank you. Is the GenErase tool available now or still in beta?
Hi. Yes, it's just been released in the latest update.
Thank you for pointing out that Neo has more pixels than Photoshop . But can you also say which of the two programs does a better reconstruction of what was not their bevor . I understand that Neo has more resolution , but is there a difference in ( to stay with you re example ) the rocks it creates . Can you say which program "invents " more realistic replacements , in genreal ?
Brilliant tutorial Anthony. I am new to this software but it is absolutely brilliant imo and some fantastic tips there that I will now put into practise.. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Very well done.
Great tutorial Anthony, thanks. How would this work on a solid object that's larger than 1536 x 1536 pixels?
Hi Geoff, yes it still works but as I mentioned the returned result will be scaled accordingly. Another approach would be to break the object into smaller sections
Thanks for the tip and thanks for producing some very helpful videos 👍👍
My pleasure! Thanks John.
Thanks for ALL of your videos. You provide great experience with a true creative spirit.
Excellent suggestions about doing sections at a time. Question please, Do I have to save all of my Luminar Neo Catalogs or just the last one? ie:Luminar Neo Catalog (5)
Really helpful, and yes, I do love the technical explanations
Great video - learned something new. Thanks!
Very informative and helpful. Thanks!
Very helpful.
Makes perfect sense.
Thank you.
Thx Anthony, did Lumneo send the whole picture into the cloud? Thx in advance for answering, cheers Peter from Germany
Yes. The AI takes the context of the whole photo into consideration when working out what should replace the erased pixels. No data form the sent photo or replaced image is saved in the cloud.
Thanks for all your tutorials
Thanks! Really appreciate the $ 🙂
Great tips!! Thank you, AT.
You're welcome Paulina :)
really helpful! Thanks for your knowledge sharing!
You're welcome Oliver
Many thanks for those tips !
One question though : in your workflow, do you start with gen erase and the proceed with the rest of your edits or do start with the Raw edits and use gen erase last ?
You have to use GenErase before going into the Edit function, it's available in the Presets tab only.
Great video. Thanks for the technical insight. This will help a lot. I was very disappointed at first.
That's amazing! Thanks for the great tip!
Really good to know! Thanks very much
I'm sure the capability of GenErase will improve over time, but one improvement that would help both now and later would be the capacity to select what you want *replaced* and what you want *ignored* in the generative calculations. With all kinds of 'intelligent fill' I frequently find that the fill is based on textures or colours I don't want.
Hi Anthony not related to this great video .... i need to change the payment method for m y membership and cannot see where to do that?
I hope they up there game, I love NEO but the Topaz Photo AI remove tool works so much better than GenErase.
Super helpful. Thank you
Extremely helpful!
Brilliant!
Thanks that explains it very well
Superb video mate.
I've recently resubscribed to neo and have a 2 year sub, so I'm looking for info like this :)
Great video as always.
Thanks again for your work keep it up
Thanks
Oh dear! I've been using generase and it just replaces background figures with strange new background figures. Erasing an unwanted monk in a temple photo had him replaced by a half man in lycra!😅
Haha. Oh dear! Yes, it's a tech still in its infancy and it certainly throws some comical results out from time to time (well quite often to be honest 😆)
Thanks. Great help!
Thank you for that video. Let me ask you sth.: Can you explain why (in my) case Luminar does not only erase the marked area but often replaces the object (e. g. a person) by another? I am sure I used the correct tool (not GenExchange). Skylum support could not help me.
can you make a video comparing generative fill to Neo's GenErase?
Yes I can. Just because you asked so nicely 😉
Try removing complicated backgrounds, to see which one is smarter when it comes to busy backgrounds.@@AnthonyTurnham
This is great information. It's too bad that doing it piecemeal like this will significantly increase the amount of time you need to spend on a photo. I'm kind of surprised the backend AI isn't smart enough to just break your selection down into 1536x1536 sections on its own. So it shouldn't matter that you selected something that is 4x as large. The AI would break it down into chunks that are the proper resolution and work on each chunk individually. Forcing the end user to break things apart like this kind of takes some of the "I" out of "AI". It would be nice if Luminar provided an overlay similar to the pixel size box layer you created, so that when we're working with this tool, we could just hit a key and the properly sized box would appear over our image so that we could get a good idea of how large an area we could erase.
I agree absolutely!
Yeah, some good points there Matthew. 👍
Thank you Anthony for another lesson and insight on how to work with Luminar Neo!
What would you do to erase a single object that was significantly larger than the max supported at full resolution? I am still waiting for it so I haven't been able to test but I imagine the AI would not handle the removal of half of an object very well?
Interesting question!
Very important to know, thank you.
You are welcome!
So would a higher end camera work more efficiently after a lower export or does it need to be the original raw file
Hi Scott. Not really sure what you're asking. Sorry.
Awesome tip!
Thanks for the tutorial when will gen erase be available to neo subscription users i can't see it in the plugins options?
Hi Ian. It should be available now. It's found in the Library module. 😀
@@AnthonyTurnham Hi just got an update today and it is there many thanks Ian
Getting some horrible amazing results I think it's full of bugs I erased a top of a building like a tower and it's replacing with an image nothing to within the original like it is from another persons image??? or maybe I am going crazy????
Maybe their servers are overloaded right now; I keep getting an error message. ;) I'll have to try this tool later.
Update: I rebooted, made sure I slopped over the edges of the item I wanted to replace just a little, and it worked! I was amazed at the result. PERFECT. Skylum is outdoing themselves with this feature.
So is GenErase still coming out (available to the public) on 10/26/2023?
Correct.
@@AnthonyTurnham Not appeared in my extensions yet???
@@apexstarfly190 it's accessed in the library module and should be there now. I think because different times around the world hit the 26th at different points but there's only one actual release time there's a bit of an overlap... Do you have it now?
Why is this better than the standard erase tool ?
So there will be no possibility besides the subscription model, even if you have the lifetime version already? That`s a pity ._.
That's an enormous pity, yes!
Yeah, the creative pass is the "solution" that Skylum are offering for lifetime licence holders.
very helpful thank you
You're welcome!
There is a big bug on the erase and clone tools altering the exposure and obliterating highlights on my Sony raw files when even the smallest spot is removed. Huge bug which they need to sort asap.
I like the new GenErase but I don't like that you can't access using Luminar as a plug in through Photoshop. You must launch from your desktop/laptop.
I tried again and this time it worked (sort of). My selection was at the upper edge of the image. The returned snippet included a white section at the edge. This is a bug. It should identify that part of the selection is an edge and process accordingly.
Cheers for the info Craig. 👍
@@AnthonyTurnham Hopefully they iron out the couple issues. I like the tool.
I tried GenErasing a person at the edge of a photo, and it left that area unchanged.
Two questions:
- Do you have any idea what kind of internet bandwidth is involved here? I do basically all my creative photography (and editing) in the Jura backcountry, an unknown region of Switzerland, where I use a signal amplifier get internet over a hotspot on my cell phone. Depending on the weather (!) my bandwidth ranges between passable and non-existent.
- I know you loathe this question, but can you give a little more information on how the subscription model works for folks who already own Luminar Neo? Luminar's website has "opacity" set to 100%.
Hi to you there in the Jura backcountry. I don't know the area but sounds intriguing!
Regarding bandwidth I'm not sure, but I imagine it's not particularly friendly as the file must be uploaded and then the result downloaded. Perhaps 30 - 100 mb each time as a hypothetical guesstimate.
The subscription gives you access to these generative tools that use the Skylum servers and also the extensions they've been releasing over the past year or so. I still think the base program is excellent without the added technologies. But if they're going to help your workflow specifically then definitely worth considering!
Anthony - When I run GenErase I am finding other subjects show up. For example, I ran GenErase on a seagull and up popped an egret. On another photo I erased an airplane and up cropped a drone. It appears as if the Cloud servers of Skylum have been compromised. Have you observed this happening?
Hello and thank you for your work and usefull tips! I'm not happy with the Gen Erase results in chalenging edits; most of the times when I try to remove an object form a picture (flower, people, etc) instead of remaining with the clear background, Gen Erase is replacing it with another object of that kind. Am I missing some settings? Luminar 3&4 never did that.
Yeah, the AI image erase and replacement technology is still very much in its infancy. It's more an issue with the AI than it is something you're doing wrong.
L3+4 weren't using generative technologies. You can still use the more traditional erase tool - or cloning until things improve. Sorry that's not super helpful.
Very good tip thx
Happy to help. Cheers for watching and commenting! 😀👍
They have a special offer for $39 without subscription. Pls. tell me if it’s a good choice. Thank you
Is this for the creative pass? Tht gives you access to the genErase and genFill tools if you already own Neo. If it's $39 for Neo on it's own and you're not too worried about the genAI stuff or the extensions then, yes, that's an excellent deal. You don't need all of the marketed tools to edit a photo well. 😀👍
Thanks!
You're welcome! Thanks! I really appreciate the $ 🙂
Don't know if you're aware but luminar just sent an email and they featured your video for gen erase tips 😎
Hi. Thanks for the heads up! Yes, they did come to me and ask if they could share it. 👍
I renewed my subscription for Luminar Neo, so why do I have to pay again for Neo's AI GenErase? Isn't that a normal extension? It is also not clear to me which link I should use for the discount code? Can you help me with that?
Hi Erik. If you have the subscription there's no need to upgrade anything. You'll have access to the new Generative AI tools as they're released. The genErase tool is in the Library module.
Wonderful
Does Gen Erase work? Yes and No! Sometimes it,s works perfect in 1 go, other times it makes 1 big mess of it. I select 3 persons to erase, instead of pavement, I get 1 person on the photo back. I select this person to erase in the second time, now i get a white standing bird on my photo. Selected this again, and now I get the pavement that what I think it schould do on the first time.
Can you please help me with what im doing wrong? i tried to use GenErase on 2 images. but instead of removing the selection it just replaces is with something else.
Example, i have water with a boat on it,. i want to boat gone, i select it and hit erase, and it just replaced it with a car.
Other example i have an image of a bridge with a sky behind it, but there is a street sign in the middle, instead of removing it, it turns it into a microphone or a flag on a pole etc.
And im very sure im not in Genswap.
Pretty much a ho-hum extension at best. I am not a P Shop fan boy at all, but generative fill is way ahead and I dont see Skylum making any attempt to make it comparable. They will just tell us how wonderful it is now....why not buy MORE?
Maybe they could fix it to where you can paint every subject and specify erasing them in a numbered sequence individually, to where you send the entire project once. Then you could do something else while you wait, since it is mostly using their hardware for the heavy lifting. Like go make some popcorn.
I'm still geting "something goes wrong, choose another mask". Maybe its servers overload after new update.
