- Is Music Permitted in Islaam? - Dr Zakir Naik
Ep_07_17
Yusuf Chambers: Many Muslims consider music to be allowed. Could you just confirm did the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) speak against Music?
Dr. Zakir: There is a great difference of opinion as far as the Muslims are considered whether Music is allowed or not whether it is permitted or not but there is no verse in the Quran directly prohibiting music but there are indications.
Allah says in the Quran in Surah Luqman ch. no. 31 verse no. 6 says that
“Among them there are those people who purchase idle tales without knowledge and without meaning and they mislead the people away from the path of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) and they ridicule the path of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’ala) these are the people who receive a humiliating punishment”
So based on this if you see the Tafseer, many of the Tafseer say that this idle tales without knowledge, without meaning refers to unislamic songs and the musical instruments, if you read the Tafseer.
As far as the Prophet prohibiting music there are various Sahih Hadith. So if you read the Hadith of Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) then there will be no doubt that there will be doubt whether its permitted or prohibited. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) said its mentioned in
Sahih Bukhari Vol. no. 7 (Book of Drinks) Hadith no. 5590 the beloved Prophet said that
“From among my followers there will be among my followers there will be some people who will make illicit sex i.e. adultery and fornication as well as wearing of silk, drinking intoxicants and using musical instruments as legal”
There will be among my people who will make some things which are illegal i.e. adultery, fornication, wearing of silk, having intoxicants and the playing of musical instruments as legal.
Now this Hadith when it says that they will make certain things legal and we know that intoxicants is haraam, we know very well that adultery, fornication is haraam because it is mentioned along with these things which are forbidden, musical instruments are mentioned along with them, it indicates that the Prophet has prohibited them but some people will make it legal.
And we know there are some scholars who today do permit that playing of musical instruments is allowed. So this Hadith is very clear cut in saying that musical instruments are haraam. But there are other Sahih Hadith which do permit some musical instruments especially the Duff that’s tambourine. If you read the Hadith if our beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) of Sahih Bukhari Vol. no. 5 (Book of Maghaazi) Hadith no. 4001 where it is said that
“Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihe wa sallam) after consummating his marriage, he came and sat outside along with one of the Sahabas when 2 small girls were playing the tambourine i.e. the Duff and they were praising that Sahaba, his father how he died in Jihaad and when they started praising the Prophet, he said don’t praise me you can say what you were saying earlier”
Indicating that the Prophet did not prohibit them from playing the tambourine...

Music in itself is not evil. Music can be a tool for good or evil. it's how we use music that counts - your intentions.
Similarly like technology in itself is not evil. Eg.social media can lead to mental health issues. On the other hand the power of social media can also be used to quickly raise funds for an urgent cause compared to the olden days when people had to go door-to-door fundraising.
Don't try to be logical with Zakir Naik. Simply accept the fact that he does not belong to this planet.Buy peace of mind than making him understand why music is not haram. The book said it . period.it is that simple for him.
U made no sense zahra in islam is clearly haram as theres a specific azab for it.
I agree with u
It means good music and bad music
Good music with good sayings or indicating good points to promote goodness through music with vocals is permitted i think
And
Bad music with bad sayings is not permitted because it promotes non sense and wasting time ( i think)
Correct. Islam is a religion of Fitra (nature) and music always was part of Fitra of humankind since beginning of history. There must be wisdom behind every dictum but there is no wisdom behind banning music. Arabic of "music" is "musuki" which is not in the Quran at all. The Quranic words "sound" and "futile conversation" in chapters Luqman verse 6 & Bani Israel verse 64 were mistranslated as "music" to support music-ban.

I suggest in this kind of discussion to define first what is "music". What is the difference between hearing a natural sound such as: tree leaves in a windy day make a sound, waves in the sea make a special sound.
Or, if I take two chestnuts and bound them in each other an they make a rithme , in a way that it makes a pleasant sound.. in this case I can say that two chestnuts are an instrumental instrument. And it seriously can become an instrument by the way.
So, how can someone define this?
Thank you

@@mishyy713 why? Give me reason.
Of course you do not have to leave Islam or consider suicide. Let me tell you something that has happened to me recently. Because of this Coronavirus lockdown I have been left alone a lot. My thoughts have gone everywhere. I had begun feeling guilty about everything I had done in the past and- astagfirullah I had even had begun having doubts on my deen. I finally had enough and made a dua, crying for Allah to please guide me and for me to please stop having such thoughts. Just twenty minutes later I was watching youtube videos and I came across this video. The title was " This Ayat made the Sabaha Kneel". I had no idea what it was about but I watched it. I can't exactly remember the ayat but it was something about how we would be judged and held accountable for our thoughts. This made me so scared cause the thoughts I had could definitely take me straight to Jahanam. The Sabaha begged them that they could not follow this because their thoughts are really bad and couldn't do anything about them. Maybe you should watch that video because I realise I am not explaining this very well, sorry. So what did he say when the Sabaha begged to him this? He told them that you will not be held accountable for your thoughts unless you act on them or verbalise them because we have no control over our thoughts. I immediately began crying then because you have no idea how much I needed to hear those words... watch the channel IloveUAllah, I found a lot of great advice like that there. Another amazing thing is that I used to have a huge obsession with the anime boy in my profile pic. I would get angry if anyone told me that he wasn't real and I even had a pillow of him that I treated if it were a real person. After I watched that video though, everynight before I went to sleep I would give the pillow a kiss goodnight. That night however I didn't see any point of doing it. I no longer held any importance for that mere character. I suddenly held a strong love for Allah and my religion and that was it. I cannot tell you how amazing that love for Allah feels. After that I have had more thoughts come to me some of which were even suicidal. I now knew that I wouldn't be held accountable for these thoughts but I still so hated having them and I wanted them to get out of my mind. I practiced meditation and talked to my loved ones but still not much help. And what's worse is that I realise now that even though I was a born muslim my relationlship with Allah was very weak. So I tried to do many things to fix that but then I learnt about Muhammad SAW marriage to Aisha RA at 9 years old. I couldn't sleep the whole night and had doubts again. I eventually did a lot of research and came to the conclusion that Aisha RA was 19 and not 9 at the time of marriage. Even though having figured this out I still had doubts and have suicidal thoughts. But let me tell you something. Everytime I am at loss and ask for guidance I always get it. Not always the way I want it to be but I always get it. Do not leave Islam for it will be a great loss. Ask Allah for guidance sincerely and he won't fail to guide you. There is no one that loves you like Allah. He loves you more than anyone in the world. After I watched that video about the Sabaha the thoughts came to me more than ever but I didn't let any penetrate my actions. I am also reading the translations of quran and watching several videos like this to boost my iman. As for those things being haram: true muslims live on this dunya like it's a prison. Disbelievers treat this dunya like it's Jannah. Everything that is forbidden for us is for our own good. It is all a test. And you are doing so well. Everytime you try and become closer to Allah the Shaytaan will whisper more things in your ear and you will face even more tests. It is to see if you can leave them for the love of Allah. Keep your faith strong. And ask Allah to guide you the right path. Because you have all those beautiful things waiting for you in Jannah. Dedicate this dhunya to love Allah and Islam deen. I have also recently realised just last night how I can dissipate those suicidal thoughts. It's amazing that i came across your comment just after this realisation. Well I first searched up if there is any dua for suicidal thoughts. There isn't really. But I found this piece of information. If yiu for say stab yourself then in Jahanam you will be stabbing yourself over and over again. If you drink poison then you will be consuming that poison over and over again in Jahanam. This helped me little. What I realised last night was this: you know the phrase deen over dunya? I have always tried to stand by this. If I commit suicide then that means I have chosen dunya over deen. Because I have considered the problems in this dunya to be greater than Allah's love and mercy. There is no pain that we are not built to take. We will be tested in the harshest ways. But remember this: Allah love is greater than the love of 70 mothers. The true happiness is granted in Jannah. All the happiness in this dunya is like air. You breathe it in, it stays there for a bit, and then you breathe it out. Allah will always guide those who ask sincerely. Especially the young cause if they ask for guidance Allah will even guide them while they are sleeping. Allah will guide them which way they turn in their sleep. I realise this comment is very long and all over the place but I wrote it in the hopes that you will keep your faith in Allah strong. And that you won't have to consider suicide again. Take it from someone who has been there. May Allah bless you and guide you. Ameen

stop depending on the words of humans. Listen to the word of Allah. Allah's words are revealed in the Quran. Scholars and sheikhs or your family and friends may tell you different things but non of them can compare to the word of Allah.
In the Quran, there is not a single verse that prohibits music. Allah does not make mistake and he makes clear what is true. If Allah himself did not forbid music then which human being that eats and breathes like you has any authority over Allah to forbid it. When people try to become God, then we see a lot of confusion and problems just as is happening now. In the Quran Allah says the people that forbids the good things he has made lawful are transgressors. See quran 5:87
Allah alone guides to the right path. He who has faith in Allah and puts their trust in Allah will never be led astray. So please do not let what is created lead you away from the creator.
Music is beautiful when used in a good way. It has been proved to heal people from depression and even lead people to Allah. Music can also be used negatively when the words are negative and dirty. Allah does not forbid music but forbids vain speech so now it is left for you to choose and filter the kind of music you listen to. Is it one filled with positive and productive messages or one filled with vain speech?

Duff was probably a common instrument back then. Otherwise there would be indication of at-least some instruments which Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) would prohibit explicitly.
He always allowed it when it was for a happy occassion and is EXPLICITELY innocent as childrens were playing it. Meaning there was no sophisticated sexual, forbidden or hidden meaning behind the music.
But music is different for different people. An innocent music can cause negative emotion and happy emotion at the same time. Dr. Zakir I love you and listen to you all the times, but I think you take extreme interpretation of Quran and if Quran can't justify your extreme views, you use Hadith's to justify. Tell me how clean music without lyrics or with clean lyrics is bad? If it distract you from prayer, then a cricket match, a wedding ceremony, a feast or anything happy or exciting also distracts you from prayer and thus everything that gives you happiness is prohibited. That does not make any sense. Allah has made all halal things that give Muslims comfort or happiness specifically for Muslims. Although people who become more religious or want to be near Allah voluntarily give up these things to remember Allah more often.

I made so much research but couldn't find satisfying answer, pls give an answer.
Music is not haram. It can only be haram if you find something from the quran or sunnah that says its haram.According to the Maliki the hadiths that purport to make music haram cannot be established and proved to be from the prophet. The Maliki therfore agree that listening to music is allowed. As for the sura which is used to justify the position of music being haram:
When they see tijara (business) and lahw (amusement) they break up for it, and leave you standing ,what is with God is better than lahw and tijara, and God is the best of sustainers. Surah juma verse 11.
Jabir ibn Abdullah and al Tabari have both mentioned that this verse was revealed due to an incident when the prophet was standing and delivering his sermons a caravan approached from Syria and the congregation left the mosque and only 12 men remained with the prophet. Another version is that weddings where music was played in Medina would distract the congregation and they would leave to join it. In this verse Allah is scolding or reprimanding the congregation for their actions.
Ibn Qubays says that God has joined tijara and lahw together therefore any ruling on one must apply to both of them. But God has not banned tijara, therfore by this reasoning we cannot say that he banned amusement (which is interpreted as music). If God had intended to ban lahw, the verse would have been explicit. Even the word lahw, which Salafis use to mean music, has a broader meaning ie wasting time.
Most of the hadith used by Wahhabi Najdiyya Salafi to prove that music haram are muallaq (one or more narrators are ommited) and daif i.e weak. Consider the famous hadith where those who use musical instruments, among other things, will be turned into monkeys and pigs.
This hadith comes from an extremely precarious chain. It's a wonder that Bukhari included it in his book. It mentions khazz, an item of clothing that misguide Muslims will consider halal. But imam Abu Dawud says about this item of cloth that at least twenty or more companions of the prophet used to wear it. It is completely halal. Some considef the word to be harr or silk. But even if you take it to mean silk, silk is not prohibited for women, it is not haram. You can say there is a partial prohibition for men.Ibn Hazm considered considered this hadith to be weak because of its isnad (chain)The hadith is extremely weak and probably fabricated. Furthermore one of the sub narrator of this hadith, Hisham ibn Ammar is considered weak by many scholars. Abu Dawud says that Hisham narrated 400 hadith, all of which are fabricated. Ad dhahabi has said that Hisham was accused of changing text and would not narrate a hadith unless someone paid him.
Major Muslim scholars in Islam considered it permissible, like Imam Malik, Shafi'i, abu Hanifa, ash Shawkani, ibn Hazm, al Ghazali,al Nablusi, ad Dhahabi, Abdullah bin Jaafar bin Abi Talib, al Qardawi, etc
Major sahaba who ruled for the permissibility of music include Abdullah ibn Jaafar, Abdullah al Zubair, al Mughira ibn Shuba, Usama Ibn Zayd, Hassan ibn Thabit and Muawiyya ibn Sufyan. Abdullah ibn Zubair owned many singing girls and dancing girls who would sing for him and play the oud (lute) for him. Abu Musa used to sing in a beautiful voice, like Daud.Ibrahim ibn Saad hin Abdulrahman bin Awf used to listen to songs accompanied by the oud.
The great muhaddith Imam Shawkani discusses this in detail in his book nayl al awtar.
The proofs are to many to detail here. And remember the prophet Daud used to sing he Zabur (psalms) which were revealed to him by Allah.
As long as there is no obscenity or debauchery associated with it, music is halal. The devient Wahhabi Najdiyya Salafi sect has promoted this music is haram narrative which is a minority position in Islam. They push this narrative to the rest of the Muslim world while they enjoy at home the music and songs of the famous oud virtuoso Abadi al Johar, Abdul Majeed Abdullah, and the numerous Saudi singers such Mohamed Abdu, Talal Maddah and numerous other singers.
While many gullible youth follow the Wahhabi Najdiyya Salafi sect's devient teaching, the Saudi Arabians are enjoying their music and in 2019 they established a music teaching institute and orchestra in Riyadh.
Keep on believing the Saudi Arabian Najdiyya lies, as you clamp down on your native ethnic muslim muscial cultures, destroying your native Muslim languages and names, your native Muslim dress and so on, they are laughing at your gullibility, as they steadily Arabise you.

God says in the Quran: "and I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.", so the purpose of our creation from a Muslims perspective is to worship and submit to God not to increase as much as happiness and pleasure we can get because this is purposeless and aimless. God implies in the Qur'an also that he created life as a test for people to see whether they will obey him or disobey him, God always has a reason to prohibit things, and sometimes he does it to simply test people in their obedience as that is the whole point of life. And as Muslims we also believe in the hereafter or the afterlife, where depending on our obedience to the most high we will either go to a blissful place which is heaven or the hellfire, and all of these beliefs Muslims are certain about because there are evidences to show Islam is the true religion.

It's still quite hard tho, I've always had a passion for singing as well, obviously I do not sing for anyone else, but I love singing for myself when I'm alone or smth too, listening to music and trying to sing along is just another hobby of mine that I enjoy when I'm free (I usually listen to songs which talk about life, love, and some more, but I absolutely have stopped listening to songs which have bad words, tho I forget sometimes, or a song like that randomly plays, so I listen to it unintentionally, but I stop as soon as I realize that the content it has is haram). It's hard that's why, but I'm trying my best. My goal is to be a Hafiz but I came to realise, in order for that, I need to make sure I stay away from sins and one of them is music. 🥺

@@montaga3194 Ask, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Who has forbidden the adornments and lawful provisions Allah has brought forth for His servants?” Say, “They are for the enjoyment of the believers in this worldly life, but they will be exclusively theirs on the Day of Judgment.1 This is how We make Our revelations clear for people of knowledge.”
@@sohaibarslan8857 The verse you mentioned is about those things which are made lawful by Allah. Musical instruments are not lawful (as per the clear ahadith). They are forbidden by Allah, so the verse does not apply.

There are islamic songs with background music.. what about them?
@Qwartell A Why are you not writing the words completely. Is writing completely haram? bro try to think it positively. Allah has made it easier for us
What I want to know is, considering the arabs culture and in their time, was the banging of the tamborine and singing an expression of music then or not?
Ok now I understand what really answer is. The answer is music is not haram but It has some examples If you listen to very prohibited or Ilegally music Its make you do something bad so becareful to what music effects to you.

Your very own voice is a musical instrument, playing it everyday praying to Allah and to live daily life. The actual sin depends on how you present it to people. I agree that there are vey very bad people who use music towards negative purposes such as UK drill and Hip hop. However, listening to manipulated sounds and enjoying it doesn't make it a sin but a stepping stone for humanity to live a better life.
Exactly!
Music in itself is NOT haram!! The Prophet (SAW) was NEVER given the authority by Allah to make unlawful or lawful that which Allah didn’t. Saying that there’s no verse in the Quran that prohibits music and then going to Hadith and trying to say The Prophet (SAW) prohibited it is BLASPHEMOUS and giving The Prophet (SAW) authority that he wasn’t given by Allah!!! I’ve lost a great deal of respect for this man over the years because I see now that he’s just like a Christian preacher who only repeats whatever the traditional narrative is like a robot. I have much more respect for someone like Shabir Ally who isn’t afraid to challenge the norm of traditional thoughts and recognizes that just because for many years scholars said this and that doesn’t mean that they were correct!
In another word you are rejecting the verse of Quran Where Allah says that Prophet Muhammad doesn’t say anything wothout the will of Allah.😂
Let's be realistic Islam Doesn't need reforms and anyone who Does it to keep b@stards/liberals in Islam are also sinful.
You may not be aware that Liberalism is a religion where you follow what Supreme liberal govt. Follows. For now Liberal govt. of USA decides the laws of liberalism.
It's up to you will you follow libralized version of Islam or The Islam decided by Allah?
Music has the power to express human's every feeling. In these feelings there may have sad, happy, etc. But Islam doesn’t permitted to express those feel which can make one inclined to prohibited practices.
God will never judge me on the clothes I'm wearing, God will not judge me for the people I loved in the past, God will not judge me for being a vegetarian, God will not judge me for the social activities with all kind of people, God will not judge me for enjoying the music I listen. All those restrictions go against nature and the beauty of life. God is watching how many hearts I made happy, how many joy I spread, how many people I feed with the best handmade food, which life lessons I spread, how I share everything I have with others, how I let other people grow in life, how I helped others, how I used the one life he gave me. Those are the big things in life. God didn't gave me this body, brains and mind to live as a prisoner, but to spread love and do good deeds. To make the world a beautiful place.
It is halal. It is a mistranslation of a hadith and says nothing of music.
Only Allah can create haram and halal
However some music is haram ( like the current music industry as a whole 👎)

Lol the F. “Prophet” literally had no recourse for making instruments “haram” since it was a pagan society and not a God-fearing one that (mis)used Music, and also since, just like weapons, instruments were still being created as well as upgraded.

Most religions practice music as part of worship. In the old Bible time of King David, people used music and dancing to praise Yahweh. It is said that singing and dancing to the musical instruments for the praise of God is the highest form of prayer.
We have organ music with the singing of hymns, in praise of God. Very good feeling.
