Is Music Haram in Islam? | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Dr. Shabir Ally addresses a viewer's concern about the permissibility of music in Islam. The viewer feels distressed by the notion that enjoying music, which helps them vent, might be haram (forbidden). Dr. Shabir begins by explaining that for something to be deemed haram, it must be explicitly prohibited by high authorities, with the highest being God. He discusses how some people interpret Quranic verses, such as those in Surah Luqman, to mean music is prohibited, but clarifies that these verses actually refer to "lahw al-hadith," which is speech or activities of no benefit used to detract from the Quran's message. This context doesn't directly condemn music. Dr. Shabir also mentions that while there are some weak or unclear narrations attributed to the Prophet Muhammad condemning music, these are not found in the most authentic sources. He highlights that the use of drums, for instance, was permissible during certain celebrations, indicating that music isn't inherently prohibited. Dr. Shabir concludes that there is no clear and authentic evidence from either the Quran or Hadith to ban music entirely. Instead, he advises moderation and choosing music that benefits rather than harms, emphasizing that time should also be devoted to the remembrance and worship of God.

At the time of Prophet Mohammed and time of Khikafat e Rashid different kind of musical instruments were available and in use by people other than Followers of Prophet Mohammed and Sahaba Ajmaeen.
Dr. Shabbir Ali, please give any example of using those instruments by Prophet, Khulafah e Rashid and Tabaeen except Duff ?
Now come to logic harmful or beneficial. Music and some musical instruments definitely gave very strong impact on mental conditions, and very effectively can deter human consciousness, determination. I am trained ( partial) musician, vocal and instrument, and I have very good experience how dangerous music can be to distract from positive active to either passive or towards negative activities in life.
It is similar to drinking Alcohol, as it is mentioned in Quran, Alcohol has more negative effects than positive benefits.

Yes, they act insecure because they are lacking something, and their desire for control stems from their own issues. You can't just claim, "Oh, it's because our prophet said so." If it were as serious as you're making it out to be, like zina (adultery), which is clearly and explicitly condemned by Allah, then it would be plainly stated as a major sin in every religious text. But it's not mentioned like that anywhere, so take a step back and focus on improving yourself. Find purpose in life, and work on your own growth instead of putting others down and ruining their legitimate enjoyment.

always find your answer in the most authentic sources, the quran and the hadist, and as Dr Shabir pointed out there are no clear prohibition to music so we should not prohibit ourselves what god does not forbid. Furthermore, we must also use our mind. Some scholars in my country argue if the music is haram, which part of it is haram. Is it the song, the tune, the sound, the instrument or is it the combination? they are all natural and around us. our own natural speech has music, the very keyboard am typing right now produces sound. What I understand is anything, including music, can be haram if it does not have any benefit and lead us astray from God not the music itself.

Music is not Haram, these are the evidences from authentic Hadiths.👇
      1. Whatever ALLAH leaves without saying Haram are halal by default. General Fiqh rule.
      2. HADITHS - Prophet(SA) allowed music with instruments in his own house during Eid - Sahih Bukhari 987, 988, 3931, 949, 952.
      3. HADITHS - Prophet(SA) compared the quran recitation of a companion to the musical sound of Mazamir(wind instruments, flute).
      - Al Adab Al Mufrad 805, Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1087, Sahih bukhari 5048.
      4. HADITHS - Prophet Muhammad(SA) invited singers to a wedding function to sing - Sunan Ibn Mājah 1900.
      5. That "Bukhari hadis 5590 which says musical instruments are haram in an indirect way" is a hanged hadis or an un-numbered hadis in bukhari text. Because the reporter lacks the connection to the Prophet(sa).
      6. A Slave Girl invited Prophet(SA) to listen to her song playing tambourine - Tirmidhi 3690
      7. Only ALLAH has the authority to declare Haram. Scholars do not have that authority. Inorder to consider anything as Haram it requires solid authentic evidences.
Do not falsely declare with your tongues, “This is lawful, and that is unlawful,” ˹only˺ fabricating lies against Allah. Indeed, those who fabricate lies against Allah will never succeed. Quran 16:116

Alot of the modern push to ban Music in Islam comes from people who listened to some pop and rap when they were younger, realizing that alot of it trashy and unserious, and deciding that is sucks. This has broadly been my experience with this issue. But alot of music, a majority of it, is clean and not riddled with vice and haram. Pretty much anything outside of the two genres a mentioned, like Jazz, Classical, Metal, and electronic is clean, especially when there aren't lyrics. Taking this into account makes the main hadith on this make more sense. Tying music to or hiding haram inside of it is the real problem. Not music itself.

    • @derrickf1533
      @derrickf1533 3 месяца назад +2

The majority of music has lyrics that focus on dunya or negative things (like heartbreak, romance stories that lead to zina, depression, hate, immorality, glorifying war, fame, power, etc.) no matter the genre. It is only a minority of songs which have innocent or positive lyrics. This is a reality you need to accept. Even when it comes to instrumental music, a lot of it can affect our brain in negative ways, too. And there are many studies that corroborate this. So even if we don't say that music is Haram, it is totally obvious that the vast majority of it is a bad influence, and anyone who really knows about music and is sincere will have to admit it.

How best they can take interest (usuary) and so on. And people like Shabbir Ali can raise funds in the form of donation by legalising forbidden things.

Or maybe we should realize that when speakers such as Hamza Yusuf, Mufti Menk, or Dr Yasir Qadhi discuss music they say to simply avoid it and always state that there’s a difference of opinion / debate BEFORE giving their personal opinion …🤔… almost as if being careful to call something haram like TikTok does instantly

But on the opposite side, we have many sahih hadiths in which the prophet casually listens to music (duff) and singing.
So in the end you have nothing but unclear and weak hadiths that can't be used to say music is haram.
And if you say the Qur'an prohibited it, "lahw el hadith" is a generic term for anything with no benefit. And if you read the entire verse and the one after it. Allah clearly condemned the people who use lahw el hadith and he says nothing about the lahw itself.

And this hadith isn't only in sahih Al-Buhari, but in the sunan of Ibn Madja. Also the scholars of the past, especially, the salafs learnt all of this from the sahabas and tabi'ins, then attabi'ins. Therefore they knew the true meanings of the mentioned ayahs much well, than so called "modern" scholars.

Actually, it's not rocket science: music with lyrics that includes curses, nudes, and other shameful parts ar prohibited because it hurts other people. But a piano, cello, violin, etc doesn't do that. These sound great to th ear, and give tranquility.
