A Muslim Understanding of God's Perpetual Activity | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Muslims have had intense debates about whether God created the universe out of nothing or if God created it eternally out of the perfection of His nature. So too have people of other faiths. In the Middle Ages, Christians moved towards the view that God created the universe out of nothing, from which the implication seemed to follow that in the conceptual pre-creation era, God was all alone. Some Christians have suggested that the Muslim God is deficient, as prior to the creation, God would have had no one to love, a problem solved by the Trinity doctrine which posits that the three divine persons loved each other before creation. But surprisingly, Ibn Taymiyyah argued that God must have always been creating. Dr. Shabir Ally says that it is thus possible for a Muslim adopting Ibn Taymiyyah's view to say that there never was a time when God was alone, and that God always had His creation to love.

Hello Dr. James McGrath, I have referred to your books many times. I am sorry about missing (or on occasion even mixing up) your first name. Now as I get older I sometimes mix up names of authors when I cite from memory. But rest assured that you are one of my favourite and highly respected authors. Your book The Only True God really helped me to sort through and comprehend all the various perspectives on the development of Christology. I also benefitted a lot from your book on the Burial of Jesus. I now look forward to eventually reading your book on John's Apologetic Christology and your other book on What Jesus Learned from Women. For Muslims, it is a given, though we have not thought or spoken much about it, that Jesus must have learned from his mother Mary who is highly regarded in the Quran as one chosen by God. I am curious about at least that chapter of your book.

As a traditionalist Muslim, imo, when we try to assess these philosophical aspects, we're playing with air. We and our intellectual capacities are bound by 3 spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension. God is not limited by these dimensionalities like us, God is beyond these limitations, and we can't even imagine beyond it. The philosophies of why and how should be limited to the metaphysics that can be explained within our bounds.

I think a big problem in this debate is the human understanding of time. We know time is a function of expansion, and indeed before the creation there was no time. So it could be postulated that Allah existed for an eternity prior to the creation, which is really only 14 Billion some years old, and will continue to exist for an eternity after. Will there be time or even a need for it in the world to come?

God the owner and controller has no need for anything. By creation the favour is to us. Angels have no free will but they do his bidding implicitly. He created heaven for those humans who believe in him, who will follow his commandments and choose to live under God given law on earth despite that he gave them free will and constant challenges from Satan's temptations. He also has a condition that of those, those without pride are the ones who will inhabit his kingdom. One cannot love God wholly whilst one has pride. True love of one's Creator, God, can only be created once a human divests himself/herself completely of pride. God has no need to do this - he has no need for love or loyalty - but he wishes to reward those who chose him over other false gods and false values with immense challenges here on earth.

Ibn taimeyah was misled by ibn rushd philosophy which states that all individual types of creation should have been existed with God all the time, ie, eternally, because if that was not the case, it is preposterous to think that a lapse of time would occur in which God would have become inactive of his inherent attribute of being a creator. That is a grave mistake of ibn taimeyah because he did not consider that time is created by God himself which means that he was independent of both time and space as well. creatures, including god's throne, are subjected to or governed by time and definitely this is not the case with God the creator.

Timeless creation is what doctor Ally endorses. This says that there was not a moment when God existed alone and that the creation were always there with Him. This does not seem to be consistent with the Quranic teachings about God where he is given the names , of His 99 Names , The Creator and The Eternal (timeless ) . He is also described as the first and the last .
Second, reflecting on the nature of God from a philosophical lenses, we see that reasoning from the natural world we can see that God was the first Cause of the universe . This means that He is the Creator of the space time reality we live in . Therefore time at least in the physical sense had a beginning . There was no 'before' the first moment of the universe coming into existence . This can be supported scientifically as we know of the Big Bang theory.
Taking all these insights into account , what would it mean to speak of the Creator and the Eternal . This means that God created the physical universe ( this can also apply to other worlds God may have created , whether be angelic world or otherwise) without preexisting materials. It is not like God created the universe from other universes etc. This will avoid infinite regress where you will never reach the First cause as God if you just keep going back from the present to the past. Creation in this sense therefore should be understood as bringing something into existence for the first time. Period. full stop . This means that God was timeless (eternal ) without creation then as the moment he created , he assumes state of temporal mode of existence . This means that God for example exists now in the present . If you accept timeless creation then Dr Ally would be commited to a view of time where there is no past , present and future , everything just exists at once. What we observe as motion and change is just our perspective of living in this space time reality . From a God's perspective , there is no such thing as change or motion . This would of course seem absurd and illogical .
Dr Ally seems to use the word creation in the ordinary sense as we might say ' I just created my first project' etc . Creation as it applies to God need to be understand as bringing something into existence for the first time without preexisting materials , physical or otherwise. This is why Dr Ally when speaking about Allah with his throne over the water ...saying there was something there before the creation . This seems painful misunderstanding . Whether be a water or some other entity , for God to name himself as the Creator , he has to be the first cause where he brings something into existence for the first time . This Quranic description may be understood as a metaphorical image.
Regarding eternality , it is easy to imagine God existing alone without creation then the act of creating would be the start of time itself . By the way time doesn't have to be a physical as we are experiencing today. It can be metaphysical . For example God thinking before creation, the thoughts passing his mind would be enough to substantiate time . To avoid infinite regress and affirm God's true nature , the correct view would be Allah is timeless without creation , then in time after.
Sorry for the long writing . Hope Doctor Ally would kindly respond to this .

I don't agree with Tayymiah. Creations r not eternal I believe. however, I also think that God's thoughts r not passing. Infact, all of God's thoughts, sight, hearing, creating, and other actions and attributes is like that CD which is unchanging and unchnageable that kind of projects all after-effects of its eternal thoughts and actions from eternity into time by time projections. The difference is CD in this world cann't have endless memory and projections but God already from eternity thought, determined, seen, heard, and created all of eternity infinitely without (past, present, and endless future) that comes into pass event by event one after another.
For example, I turn the switch on that first turns all the lights on, then the fridge, and then the tv. I intended all three of these to turn on and happen at the same time during that same one moment, but first the lights turn on, and after some time the fridge, and then after some time the tv turns on. Just because the tv turns on after a while does not mean I turned the tv on when it turned on, but rather It turned on because i intended to turn it on a few minutes ago. My turning on of the tv is not at the same time when the tv really turns on but a few minutes before it actually happens. Same with God. God created all his creations from eternity without ever starting or stopping creating but at the same time, at the same moment but creations take place at the appointed times and places that he decided and created.

12:05 As for the question you posed at this minute, the answer is very simple and easy.
You have to differentiate between two things:
    1. Love or mercy as an action that can only be shown to someone who is present with you
    2. And mercy as an attribute that is always present with you. You show it only when needed and when you do not show it because no one deserves it or that there is no other person with you. This does not mean that you are not characterized by it, for it is a fixed attribute in you.

Alfa arabi seems to have (commandeered) the idea from Hinduism (Brahman (ब्रह्मन्) (stem) (neuter gender) means the concept of the transcendent and immanent ultimate reality, Supreme Cosmic Spirit in Hinduism. The concept is central to Hindu philosophy, especially Vedanta) seems to me that this idea like many others are quiet literally commandeered from other cultures by the 'the followers of peaceful religion".The face that Shabir made when he was referring to the 2 philosophers of Alfa arabi is priceless.

    Ibn Taymiyyah's view:
Allaah azzawajal acts through choice, through will and power, successively, and He has eternally been like this, and will eternally remain like this, there is no beginning to His essence and attributes and no end.
Hence, with this, Ibn Taymiyyah opines that an endless chain of events (as in created entities besides Allaah) arising through Allaah's speech and action is permissible or possible, without any one of those entities being eternally present with Allaah and not having a beginning. Thus the eternity of the genus of Allaah's actions, is affirmed.
    Evidence used by Ibn Taymiyyah:
"And ever was Allaah, forgiving, merciful" (Quran 4:96)
Ibn Taymiyyah explained to mean, that Allaah is eternally like this (that He is eternally one who shows forgiveness and mercy if He wills) so He is always creating, providing, forgiving etc

    • @oeshkoer
      @oeshkoer 10 месяцев назад

Does this mean that in the view of Ibn Taymiyyah an infinite amount of events can pass by and reach the current event? To give a example lets say if Allaah was always creating a day, to reach the this current day a infinite amount of days need to be have passed by to reach today. What is Ibn Taymiyyah's answer to this?

There is a Hadith where angels asked God what was the best creation after the throne and God responded the humain brain. @@camilla_cruncheee If even for God, everything has process and all the process takes time, then God is no more a creator than a mother having a child with a process that takes 9 months before we see the baby. And it is said that we engender a child and not that we create a child, so if God needs a long process for something to be, then he is in the same case of the woman who engenders, God begets the world.
There is no creation per se or more exactly there is no ex-nihilo creation, there is only transformation, it is the famous scientific law : nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed. It was intuitively perceived by ancient greek philosophers wich one said : "nothing is born or perishes, but already existing things combine and then separate again".
This gives credits to pagan religions, to the ancient Greek and Egyptian religions, to Hinduism and to a certain extent to Christianity for whom God is not a creator god but a begetter god. Thus the origin of the universe is not an act of creation but an act of begetting by the Word, that is to say the verbalization of the Spirit which after being self-generated in the primordial chaos (the eternal matrix of the divine spirit), generates its material projection which is the universe.

Dear brother, I think men of God do Faith a disservice when we enter into debates. Truth is not determined by who wins a belated. Truth is Truth. Men of God are called simply to speak that Truth. Much of Truth is a mystery and we shouldn’t act like we have it all figured out,,, or could ever totally figure it out this side of Heaven. Let’s not get all caught up and confused by trying to explain the unexplainable.
In another of your videos you mentioned that we should not use violent in trying to get people to convert. ..
but that we should just try to persuade.
I agree that violence has no place in evangelizing; . but I have come to believe that it’s not even our job to try and persuade anyone… just to share the truths that we feel we have been blessed with receiving .
I like how you humbly expound on Islam. I have learned a lot, and have come to see that true Islam, Judaism, and Christianity have much in common. They all believe in the One True God, and His mercy and love snd forgiveness. All three Faiths tells us to Love God and our neighbor. Our Faiths call us to do justice and help the orphans snd widows. We are told to tell the truth. And we are not to be unfair and oppressive. Our Faiths calls is to live in peace.
    Thank you for these videos.
    Praise God!
And we pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
    Amen

May Allah guide us all. One thing that needs to be clear to all human being it's that our mind is incomprehensible to some ideas. Allah hasn't given us the ability of comprehending that knowledge. A basic example is that we can't see or hear something but that doesn't mean it's not heard or seen by other creatures. And we can't assume how those things are because it's beyond our knowledge. May Allah continue to increase our knowledge.

If knowledge of that level was necessary or comprehensible by humans then Allah swt may have revealed it through His prophets. I understand it’s a human curiosity but will challenge one’s foundation of belief, all because of one’s incapacity to comprehend beyond a limit.

God is not in "need" of having creation around to love it. He does not have a problem with being alone (nor do we, as Muslims, have a problem with the idea). In fact, it is clearly stated in books of ahadith that there was nothing originally. E.g., Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 414: "First of all, there was nothing but Allah, and (then He created His Throne). His throne was over the water, and He wrote everything in the Book (in the Heaven) and created the Heavens and the Earth." So, *nothing existed at first* before God Created the Heavens and the Earth.
Also, I don't know why we are having this discussion, didn't know a "question" like this existed, and has in fact for ages... and am quite surprised by the pointless nature of it.
About what you said towards the end, we don't have to take every Christian idea and try to fit our narrative to it in order to respond to them. Their idea of God can be quite different sometimes or outright strange.. At times it sounds as if God is just another being like them..

The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters AFTER God created the heavens and the earth. So, God creating everything ourtof nothing is still consistent with this verse. Shabir has a funny understanding of this verse.

If these objects are independent and a se then how are they related to allah's power and causal control, if emanations, then are they of different essence??? There will be quite some difficult questions to answer

    • @Call2TruthChannel

Emanationism is nonsensical because it posits an eternal effect of God, a blatant contradiction. Perpetual creation does not have this problem as it entails that every effect of God is originated after its nonexistence by His will and power, and that only God is eternal.

Dr.Shabbir Ally has documented well here the history of this philosophical-theological debate, but I think he has missed out on the very clearly marked difference of opinion between Shaikh Al islam Imam ibne Tayyimiyah and Allamah ibne Rushd al andalusi, let me summarize for all in bullet points:
1.kalaam theologians believe that this universe has been created out of nothing and there was no created being in existence before it!.
    2. The philosophers believe that there was always a creation in existence along with Allah, and Allah created the creations that followed from the already existing creation, so essentially Allah just fashioned or re arranged the existing creation to bring out a new form, just like in chemistry two pre existing elements are added to make a new compound!! So, according to the philosophers, the creation has no origin and is pre eternal with Allah.
    3. Now, comes the view of Shaikhul Islam, Al Imam Ibne Tayyimiyah rahimahullah, he says that the dialectical theologians, the kalaam scholars have erred in claiming that this universe has been created out of nothing, neither the Qur'aan, nor the sunnah nor rationality (aql al saheeh) support such an understanding.
He then points towards the philosophers (especially ibne Rushd rahimahullah) and says that he got this point right, as opposed to the kalaam scholars , that this universe has been created from an existing creation which has been created from some existing creation ad infinito..
BUT this DOES NOT MAKE the creation either in part or whole pre eternal with Allah rather just proves that THE ATTRIBUTE OF KHALQ (CREATING) OF ALLAH IS ETERNAL and as going back there is no point in time when we can say that Allah has started to exist, similarly, going back in time, there is no one point where we can say that Allah has started creating, HE HAS BEEN CREATING ETERNALLY BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE THE CREATION ETERNAL RATHER PROVES THAT HIS SIFAT OF KHALQ IS ETERNAL!!
and Al'hamdulillahi, this is what the Qur'an and sunnah expound and the aql al saheeh accepts. Rahmatullahi rahmatan waasian ala Shaikhul Islam wal muslimeen al imam al aarifeen wal mufakkireen Ibnu Taymiyah al harrani.
