really interesting discussion which was almost ruined by the loud ridiculous unnecessary background music
Lesley Cox: Star wars music... :)
I could not agree more! I had to turn it off after literally one minute. Ugh, I can not understand WHY it is considered essential to have overly loud background music when someone is talking.
Must agree... The music was not that... necessary...
Yup. Lousy production values all around.
It made it sound like a crime documentary or a directors interview for a superhero film 🤦♀️
Ironically, the music is what happens when the urge to shock precedes the desire to communicate.
Lmaooo hit the nail on the head
There is one thing I know, and that is that this music is really annoying. I was waiting for Indiana Jones to tell something about his art.
😂🤣😂
The background music was unbearable and very distracting. The discussion could have been interesting if there had been a real debate with opposite ideas, but there was none.
A "great artist" is relative. To become a "great artist" according to some of these blow hards is affirmation from them, from their endless, pretentious blather. It is THEIR attempt to stay relevant and part of the process. Great art does not need to be explained.
Lol right lol
@Morgan Smith no it doesnt
20th century cultural Marxism indoctrination and 21th is recycled regurgitation of the 20th century
Haha thank you. 🤣 If they want to write an essay to go with their piece of “art” then they should go write a book instead.
@@kikeheebchinkjigaboo6631 Would that be Groucho Marxism or Harpo Marxism?...🤔
Painting, music, writing and so on reflect the state of the consciousness of any society, whether its on a cave wall or in a Stradivarias violin. Competence is integral in achievement of the vision - they are not separate issues. Interview great artists to find out what art means. Ask about the level of cultural sophistication in the mind of the perceiver of art - we get the art we deserve. Look at how harsh and stress inducing our environment has become, how ugly most of our architecture, how debased and twisted our tastes. For example Tracy Emmin is considered a great artist and I suppose she does represent the values of our time - God help us.
I love the interviews but the music sucks so much. It's so annoying
and also to allow the audience to feel on an emotional and spiritual basis. to evoke a sense of drama and strengthen communication visually, logically and emotionally.
the music in the background is very annoying
I believe an artist needs skill in how he enables the viewer to feel an emotional connection to the painting. without am artist there simply would not be much connection for the audience. the artist really tries to capture the imagination of peoples minds and create possibly strong metaphors.
You are absolutely correct and those in this video are on the other end on the spectrum.
No, the artist can only capture what is in their own mind. And the public either responds to it on some level or does not.
Don't need distracting bg music!
agreed...
The lady says there is "managerial skill in the work of Damian Hurst, Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons because they have to oversee a large studio" (of other artists doing work they sign as their own.) Does this strike anyone else as sick? And she goes on to say when in the Studio of Murikami that he "no longer paints the paintings but his eye is so good, he is the artist"... \sick, sick, sick...
Hmm it almost reminds me of the a film director would play
TURN OFF THE DAMN MUSIC! I WANT TO HEAR WHAT THEY ARE SAYING!!
I agree that contemporary art is incredibly imaginative these days, artists can explore so much more than just craft or skill. Technique gets boring esp if the same techniques are taught over and over. Artists can acquire and actually create their own skills from experience and intuition.
Thumbs down because of distracting background music! 👎🏻
Why do you have to have the superman style music playing in the background? It tells me that what your presenters have to say is unimportant or "not enough." Please remove it - I enjoyed the discussion, but the choice of adding the music diminished the experience.
Catherine Hicks I agree.
+Catherine Hicks Amen
interesting debate but the music is completely unnecessary and distracting.
The music in the background only distracts from yhe messages and speakers on the video.
This isnt debate. Artist dont need any thing .just the love for what thy do .
Not in today's times.. artist needs an opportunity it takes time to create great art , money is needed to be able to pursue art.
@@samisakhai by opportunity i meant the freedom or to have the time to create the art. fame helps to make money but there have been plenty of great artists who weren't famous.
@@Mintzoid yes I agree I misunderstood you sorry .the good thing that artist are able to break through and all the struggles and the suffering and the unfairness is part of what makes meaningful expression .
So in that sense, you can never really know what's inside any human being's head. Should we all just stop having conversations all together?
...loved the lecture...debate... but who ever produce this video... the backgrounds music was way to loud... what a shame, because the discussions where so interesting...
Please turn the music down. It drowns out the voices. What might have been a very interesting video is unwatchable for me because of this. If you retool it I would love the hear what these people are saying.
I feel like im stuck into a call of duty or medieval game menu whilst the music is playing.
Some cogent points, in tune with the contemporary debate - but why that dreadful background music? Do the editors not trust the spoken word?
Why this music in the background?!
You're cute
There is no other discipline where skill and craft has been more consistently undervalued than contemporary art. The worlds of music, writing and science celebrate technical proficiency. No one is saying that skill is the only element of great art but the more skill you have the greater the range of expression. Contemporary art is the technically maladroit celebrating the technically maladroit.
The music has ruined this, I can't hear what they are saying.
I couldn't finish it because the music demanded way too much attention, which is too bad because it seems as though there was interesting information in there.
Duchamps toilet is called "Fountain".
Thank you. I was like, "It's Not Urinal or Urinal, it's pronounced 'Fountain'"
The music is so high you can not hear anything ...
A book may have a great plot, but if the writer can't spell or create sentences, would you want to read it? Art is the same way. You don't need skill to create art, but why would anyone want to own the result. I prefer art that is both interesting and well crafted.
What's with the heroic music?
you dont need a great car to be a good driver
That analogy does not coincide with what they're presenting in this video.
I've found that most people who think having skill- whatever that skill might be, is unnecessary for great art, are oftener critics , or people who went to art school, but skipped drawing class.
They also tend to have big, round glasses and wear big poofy scarves.
Not sure if those things are like a membership card or something.
You left out the intentionally / ironically bad haircut...
im just a dumb painter....
What is considered great art ... (acceptable) for a long time ... at least since the sixties ... has been more about political ideologies and what was fashionable. The massive backlash against proper painting had been going on for a long time ... even when doing my MA earlier this year ... the lecturers always tried to pull us away from traditional painting. I decided I would rather be an honest painter ... than bow down to that 'painting is old fashioned' mindset. I am so glad I ignored them. I lost count of the amount of young students who got pushed toward stuff they didn't want to do ... and had no idea how to use oil paints when they really wanted to. It's a shame really ... skill shouldn't be thrown in the bin. I appreciate Modern art and the issues artists where investigating at the time ... but Modernism has been over and done with for decades ... Conceptual art proper was never that popular with gallery goers back in the sixties and seventies. At the end of the day ... it's the personal vision of the artist that is the important thing ... anyone can scribble or splash paint around ... but not everyone can paint and create art that is still good in what has long been considered a 'dead' medium. Figurative art and proper painting is actually making a slow steady come back - when done well it is timeless.
Irritating and unnecessary background music.
That's why everything looks like shit and all music sounds like shit now, because anyone can be an artist.
contemporary art looks wonderful and generally awesome..
ri
Why have the visual arts evolved to where the only accepted form is modern, contemporary conceptual art, while music seems divided into two general forms - classical and contemporary? Traditional 'salon' style paintings would seem to be the equivalent of classical music. While realistic painting is greatly restricted by what the camera can do, the camera has no imagination or ultimate control over what a greatly skilled artist can do manipulating realistic images.
When you don´t ha a good argument, shout - or play loud music
Why the obnoxious music? Very distracting and unnecessary.
Incorrect you need both vision and skill. One without the other will not elicit true admiration. One of the greatest sadness I have seen is the perpetuation of inaccurate thinking that this video represents.
Yeah, you don't even need talent to be an artist. Skill is so unnecesary, just listen a great artist like Yoko Ono, singing free no needing any kind of skills to Express her art...
spiritual depth...
Could you maybe turn down the volume for the people speaking? I almost wasn´t able to hear the background music
I barely can hear because of the MUSIC!!!
"You Don't Need Great Skill to be a Great Artist" I can see that every time I go on RUclips, minus the word, "Great"'
The music accompanying this is distracting and totally annoying.
It's like saying , you don't need a good voice to be a singer !
With production these days you don't lol
You dont
Billie Holliday had only a scant 1 Octave range. Arguably the greatest singer ever. Julie Andrews had a 4 Octave range - and a lovely voice - but none of the artistry and brilliant vocal stylings that Billie had.
You don’t.
Same can’t be said for a great painter - that takes actual skill and talent.
When skillness, invention, intelligence, visionarity and capability to transmit clearly own thoughts to people without need of complicate explanations, only then we are in front of a great artist otherwise He will be only a spectacular illusionist that world will forget soon
For example?...
This is a great video if you could tone down the dramatic music a bit!
All this talking is ruining the Star Wars themed music I’m listening to.
Gabriel Orozco (contemporary artist) says he likes to disappoint spectator with his art. That is one of his skills, right? And if you don't get it is because you are not smart enough. The biggest skill of all of this so called "contemporary" style is to kill intelligence and critique. Many of this contemporary artists are so insolent and they call it bravery. Bravery is to say: Enough of this bullshit! Laundring Money is the real issue behind all of this especulators of "contemporary art"!
Yes, that is certainly true ... the constant self-critique of art and audience gets so damn boring ... and these artists congratulate themselves for being so clever ... they create work for an audience of high art experts, dealers and gatekeepers ... not work genuinely about their existence in the world.
Great comments when I could understand them through the less-than necessary music.
I think the music is too quiet I can hear them speak
I came here to feel good about my self
The first guy nailed it. The woman in the bad shirt covered in lips was wrong.
Ur-I-nal. 😂😂 What a pretentious snit.
dreadful background music.turn it off so we can hear the interview.bad idea.
sounds like batman is rushing to the scene to give his input on the çontemporary artist's skill set
Apparently you don’t need great skill to be an editor too, that background music is unnecessary and annoying
ps oh yes..and women whose heads are replaced with a bunch of flowers...and dont forget the paint dribble down the side
Sarah Thornton’s Top 10 Reasons for Quitting the Art Market Beat
blogs.artinfo.com/abovetheestimate/2012/10/22/sarah-thorntons-top-10-reasons-for-qutting-the-art-market-beat/
She has apparently given her views a little filp flop. I thought it was pretty obvious that contemporary art is about money, speculation, ego, sensationalism, etc...
Please, don't use soundtracks while people talk
If u need skills to brith then yes artist need skills to do their art
totally agree with him!
To be a great artist today, one needs a gimmick. Bea Arthur topless was a good gimmick. The Virgin Mary in elephant dung, blasphemous, not my cup of tea, but it's a gimmick. Mapplethorpe's photo of the bullwhip was a gimmick.
My own gimmick is to pile up a few dozen of those bronze statues that are everyman and they're everywhere. You know, the cop writing the ticket, the man sitting on the park bench, the kid flying a kite, etc. I'd like to stack them higgily piggily, in a big pile, and I'll call that my art, my masterwork.. I'll go by the nom de guerre, Patrick of Atlantis.
I think you are correct that coming up with a gimmick - which would generally be accepted as a "radical" new style or innovation - is the objective of contemporary art. In fact, it IS the art: the art of coming up with a gimmick.
dump the music
Art is a way of expression that transcends conventional communication.
I think people who speculate about what is and what isn't art without creating something themselves are likened to DJs who play other people's music. They aren't contributing anything.
What is with this absurdly bombastic music? Completely unnecessary, melodramatic and distracting. Also the reason I stopped watching at minute four--4 minutes too long.
Those who can, can.
Those who don't, don't.
And those who can't do both become art critics
Get rid of that irritating stupid background sound.
skill is key in art
Skill is key in Craft.
needs more cowbell!
Why the awful music?! Otherwise it’s an interesting video. 🤦🏼♂️
the music is here and the pixilated disruption because them in power do not want you to hear this...because it speaks about true art...........and currently the art world is corrupted by antlers, hares with long ears and splats of rubbish and mindlessness
Background music nearly killed this piece.
hello . one trains thought , while the other frees , potentual .
competitive nurture , or natural develop mental
Well put! Thank you
The background music made it nearly unwatchable.
The art of ruining a video with music...
How irritating is that awful background music
The use of music in this video was NOT skilful.
why the star wars music! blah
Well, skill may or may not be central to great art, but one definitely needs great skill to be a great artist. Vision, originality, and depth are important features, no doubt - and skill is all about execution. Although these are distinct categories conceptually, in practice they're inextricably interwoven. So for example, one's originality may be compromised, or hampered, or limited, precisely because of inadequate skill. One may have the vision, but may be unable to execute. On the other hand, the ability to execute does not always entail vision or depth. The video's title is nonsense. Sorry. As for skill being "of the known", I don't see how that's necessarily or invariably true. Skill is purely about ability, cultivated or not. It needn't be conventional nor learned nor adhere to well established norms. Skill without precedent does not amount to the absence of skill. Skill can be so subtle that one doesn't even see it. That's called mastery - and by "mastery" I mean that which transcends the merely technical, true mastery harmoniously encompassing vision, depth, originality, and skill. While skill (or skills) typically begin within the context of the known, they are not lost (the great artist doesn't lose his skill) as he moves into the unknown.
Agree that one can be hampered in art by inadequate skill in a certain medium, but skill alone cannot make one a great artist. An artist may be a very skilled oil painter, for example, but then prove a huge disappointment as a sculptor, installation artist, photographer, etc. I've personally known several of these in my years as an art student and later as an artist. Meanwhile, some artists create impactful, commanding, deeply engaging work no matter the medium, while sometimes employing only quite rudimentary skill to do so. Art is inherently psychological, and, no matter how "skilled" they may be, the ugly, often painfully unavoidable truth is: Boring people invariably make boring art, and interesting people make interesting art.
Where is the full movie?
Agreed!
What a crock of swill. Many art commentators have careers primarily because their British accents sound knowledgable and sophisticated. Duchamp is hardly a great artist. Just because prices for a Duchamp are very high means nothing. Even his best paintings are not that good and do not hold up next to the work of actually great artists. The reason concept art now makes up such a large percentage of collected and promoted art is simply because the artists making this "art" know in their heart of hearts that they cannot draw, cannot paint, cannot sculpt, and essentially have no talent. Yet they want to be rich and famous anyway. So they invent ways to hide their lack of artistic ability. And the poor critics! Their job is just as bad. They still want careers, and there is so little good art to write about that they are reduced to talking about so-called concept art. And that means there is no end to the ridiculous blather that they can fill the magazines with.
ZzZZzZzZz
is the background music from a Warcraft game?
The reason abstract, modern art from people who aren't good painters, even picasso and van Gogh pass for good art is because people don't know what an artist is.
A great artist is born, not taught.
You can practice all you want but you will never be Michael Jordan.
You can practice all you want and never be Leonardo Da Vinci
Here is the key that they don't know.
You must be born with a above average MANUAL DEXTERITY. And a quick mind.
An artist's eye, you see paintings in your mind when you look around you.
Just do this, lift your hand to eye level and look at it.
The answer is all there: your hand, your eyes, and your brain.
And that is all there is.
If any of these are average, you might be a below average painter like picasso, and van Gogh.
I looked at their try at real oil painting, I can paint better than them with acrylics
And what about POLLOCK? Let's not even go there, they still consider this fine art LOL.
I saw a watercolor artist just for fun, she had a cup for washing out her brushes and then she threw it at a canvas. Then she put more water in the cup with another color and threw that at the canvas, and then she did another one, and that's all there is to that.
What a crock
2nd person cut off. not good.

great background music, very useful

Well great music agree... But not for this video though.....

Same here...
Why that absurd music?
What’s this terrible background music!
That woman sounded so ignorant.
She seems like the type of person that thinks because you by art you know about art. How embarrassing, I pity her...
