I just realized how strange it is the ground pound isn't in smash. Also for the neutral special, I would either change it to his OG version, where he can throw 2 smaller, faster, and weaker ones, or to his galaxy version.
Personally I think Mario’s final smash should be a cinematic cutscene that transitions into the Bowser boss arena from Super Mario 64 and Mario throws the character into one of those bombs on the sides dealing massive damage and knockback. Otherwise great video Toxiquid! I’ve had the idea of changing Mario’s moveset for a while since it just seems so lacking so I’m happy you delivered

If there is one thing I would change is the final smash. I feel like instead he will do a coin jump, sending the poor sap into a similar arena where you fight bowser in 64, Mario will spin his opponent around until he let go, sending them into one of those spike bombs.

Honestly, I feel like Smash's team should do some minor tweaks instead of a completely new moveset. Giving Mario the Neutral Aerial, Dash Attack and Up Throw seen here would do wonders for the character, while keeping his Smash roots.
If they do decide to redesign the characters then they have to keep there playstyles and game-plan in tact so no one gets mad that their main doesn't play like they used to. Could be hard.

The Super Star final smash is cool, but I think that a Mega Mushroom would be fitting. Mario would become giant, having the Mega Mushroom jingle playing in the background while he is walking, but he will be so big that his legs will be in the blast zone and he will run through the stage, kicking every opponent in his way.
Originally I thought of that as a contender, but considering how final smashes in ultimate are quick and straight to the point without manual control aside from reticle FS’s, I didn’t think that it was the best option- but yeah Mega mushroom could also work
Before I clicked on this video, I was really hoping you would address the absence of the Ground Pound (or as I like to call it, the Gluteus Plummetus). As always, you DELIVERED. I think everything about Mario was represented in some form, with Odyssey being integrated a lot more outside of taunts. I would've preferred to keep back throw as it is since it already references the 'Gay Bowser' throw from Super Mario 64. For the back air, I would've had Mario swing his cap around backwards like Peach's forward air. Otherwise, excellent video, and I'm glad your camera quality has improved significantly since the Sword/Shield review!
Always enjoy the charm that you put into these. Lots of nice ways to capture the characters in your style. I will admit, I'm not the biggest fan of tying ALL of Mario's varieties of moves to a central identity. Losing out on the Bowser Toss, by far Mario's most iconic move of the 64 era and what would most assuredly be his finisher if he were a pro wrestler, just to adhere to the mentality of "all the throws should be FLUDD" feels a bit strange to me. Having all of Mario's tilts and a special represented by Odyssey also feels a tad odd to me. Cappy Throw absolutely makes sense, but Mario's appeal lies in his timelessness and just the sheer amount of appearances the guy has had. I know that Odyssey is the most recent title and has Mario's richest animation suite, but I feel as if it loses a bit of kinetic energy from Mario relying so heavily on his power-ups. The slide kick from 64, the spin from Mario World, the Timed Hit Mega Glove from Mario RPG, the big foot kick from Mario Party - there's a lot Mario can do whilst keeping him more physical and not relying on entirely original moves. I know that the conceit of the series is to not care about competitive viability, but I feel like that's a hard line to walk with Mario. As you said, he's meant to be the beginner character, to teach players the fundamentals of Smash, and this updated moveset does feel a bit... keepaway focused, I suppose? Mario's extensive combo game is one of his draws and accessibility for players wishing to take their game to the next level, and the current design of Mario seems to have moves that would naturally knock the opponent away or keep them at an arm's (or arm + hat's) distance. And also you chose NSMBWii instead of Mario 3 for the recovery, and that's absolute tragedy. ... with that said, this is really charming, love the Final Smash concept taking inspiration from Mario 1, the dash attack is a significant improvement that doesn't stop Mario's momentum by ending in a roll thus increasing his mobility options, and there's a clear love for the Mario series spread throughout. Mostly the post-N64 Mario series, admittedly, but it's so nice to see and would definitely make for an interesting, robust character. Looking forward to the big ape, please treat him nice he's my boy.
Great moveset! My only problem is that there's too much Odyssey moves(I don't hate Odyssey,i in fact love it,but there's just too much) ,and i would make his Galaxy spin the Bair,and make his Nair the Mario World spin.Other than that,you did a good job!
The Mario world spin should be his down air. Also I would make the galaxy spin his down B and have that be the one to reflect projectiles instead of cape (which I will just get rid of)

Everyone thinks that Mario's neutral special is unchangeable, but guess what, it is. I got an awesome idea which came from Steve's neutral special, like Steve's crafting table, Mario could have a question block floating in the stage. From this question block you can get 3 different power-ups: Fire Flower, Ice Flower and Boomerang Flower. Mario will start with no power up, that means he will start with no neutral special, he needs to hit this question block to get his neutral special which will last for 30s and after more 30s the block will respawn. Fire Flower will work the same way it does in the official game. Ice Flower will freeze the enemy and after that you will be able to grab the frozen enemy and throw him off-stage which will grant you a free kill, but the ice ball will be slower and it will bounce higher than the fire ball making it more difficult to hit. Boomerang Flower will work the same way as Link's side special. Also, those 3 power-ups will have different probabilities to get them. Fire Flower will be the easier to get and Ice Flower will be the hardest to get while Boomerang Flower is in between those 2. Ice Flower is the most OP one because you can edge guard with it, if you hit the enemy while he is recovering, he's screwed, so that's why Ice Flower is the hardest to get from the block. I also have ideas for other moves like: side tilt: Tanooki Mario spinning with his tail up tilt: Cat Mario scratching up special: Propeller Mario (which was shown in this video) side special: Rock Mario from Galaxy 2 and for the final smash, what about Mega Mushroom. If there's someone watching this video in 2021, please leave your opinion about the ideas talked about above.
You are the only other person I've found that's thought of replacing FSpecial with the hat throw, and I'm disappointed this isn't a more common idea. Also, I'd have so that his FSpecial would change to the Odyssey dive while Cappy's out, which would not only act as an approaching hotbox and combo starter/extender, but it'd also give him even more fun movement options!

I think a neat that could have been done with Mario is if he dealt a small bit of damage when he footstools someone, just to get that classic Goomba stomping action.
I came up with an idea for his back aerial, it would be that animation that Mario makes when his flight runs out with the power of a raccoon and tanooki would be an attack that could trap the enemy if he positioned himself correctly
I think his up special and propeller hat should switch places. Jump punch IS Mario, It should stay a part of his specials. Also, neutral should be able to shoot either 1 or 2 fireballs just like in every game.
we were talking about it in my discord at one point, don't remember what the specific circumstances are, but i think that we wanted the turbo nozzle more than the hover nozzle
I think the fire flower can become more like a charged move but it has to be stopped at a certain time if his down special changed It can be a spin and become a move that can combo into itself and aerials basically like the spin jump from super mario world or links down air but easier to hit multiple times
This concept is great, though I guess I could nitpick a few things. First is that I feel there's there's a bit too much Cappy in this seen as he's been in one game so far. Down Smash and Side Special are fine, but I'd make his tilts either what he already has orsomething else, especially since he doesn't use Cappy like that in Odyssey either. Second, I think the dive as his Dash attack doesn't really... work as a Dash attack, if that makes any sense? I'd say it should remain the slide, but give it a bit more... "animation" like he has in its original appearance. Either that _or_ make it the Blue Shell from New Super Mario Bros. (ds)
Aight- for the dash attack, that’s fair, I completely get why you want it to stay as the slide, it’s functional and makes sense, I just thought it could be more character faithful to Mario in the games. For Cappy though, I have to disagree! I did a lot of research, which includes me having to boot up odyssey after 2-3 years, and he does in fact do this stuff in game! The f tilt happens when you throw cappy too close to someone, and the up tilt is legit called the “upward throw” in the action guide!

I was thinking about a moveset for Mario too and your moveset is almost as I imagine a new moveset. The only things I will change are his Fair for the dive, his Hair could use his cape and could help him recover similar to Corrin Bair. Also, his Down air could be a Stomp similar to Dr Mario and his Down B should be the Ground Pound. That's all I would change, other than that great video man. I'm looking forward for your next videos.
I feel like mario's moveset should come strictly from mario 64 and before, only using powerups and functions from that, and a new character (TOAD) could be introduced that makes use of all the functions of the New super mario Bros series. such as: bubble, prop hat, ice flower, ground pound, penguin suit, blue shell, wall jump, double pow, air spin, triple running jump, and grab is auto-carry.
My moveset ideas: Up tilt: The same seen the video Forward tilt: Mario performs the attack used in Mario Bros. when he kicks the turtles out from the sewers. Simillar to the final kick of the Jab Down tilt: The tanooki tail attack from SMB3 not too much to say here :/ Dash attack: This is called "Long jump" from SM64 also known as "YAHOO!" Works simillarly as Snake's Dash attack. Nair: Mario creates and pops a bubble as the seen in SMLand 2 Fair: The same seen in the video Uair: Mario punches with the fist like he does since Mario Bros. Down air: "Tanooki statue" would work simillarly to Kirby's stone. Can be cancelled only when mario touches the ground Bair: "Tail swing" Mario will swing the tanooki tail (up down up) simillar to Yoshi's back air F Smash: Same as shown in the video Up Smash: Mario throws a Koopa shell upwards as seen in SMW. Simillar range as Palutena's Up smash Down smash: actual Mario's down smash in Ultimate (breakdance) Forward throw: Mario will kick the opponent as he does with the Koopa shells Up throw: Mario throws the enemy upwards and then he shoots a rocket from the FLUDD as seen in the Sunshine rollercoaster boss. Back throw: the same of ultimate, but Mario says "so long king bowser" Down throw: mario jumps on the other fighter as he does with goombas, koopas, etc. Then they lay in the ground simillar to Snake's down throw. Neutral-B: Mario throws the classic fireball from the SMB fire flower. If the button keeps pressed, Mario will throw a boomerang from SM3DLand. Side-B: Mario will perform a spin from SMG. The damage will be simillar to Kirby's hammer but also will reflect proyectiles (replacing SMW cape) also can help a little when recovering. Down-B: Mario throws cappy, as shown in the video, if the b button is mashed, cappy will move a little forward to get a longer range. Up-B: Mario uses the Wing cap from SM64 working simillarly as Pit and Dark pit's Up-B Also Mario would have three jumps (the first from the ground and 2 aditional jumps) referencing the triple jump from SM64 to Odyssey. The final smash will be "Mega Mario" Mario eats a Mega mushroom from NSMB and walks through the stage, digging and then smashing every fighter that gets catched by Mario shoes.
While I did vote for kirby though a wario moveset mods is honestly something I would love Mostly since his moveset lacks any history with his more main games (excluding warioware)
Seems like Cappy got a tad too much focus. Then again, I dunno what to swap with. Cape’s a Special, Tanooki is a power up, Star Spin may intersect with Luma. Then again, you also had Cappy as a special, so I dunno. Plumber tools, like the cartoons/movie? :O Other than that, seems like a good moveset.
I agree with 90% of this moveset but the down special doesn’t sit right with me. The cape from super Mario world doesn’t reflect projectiles in that game, why should it in smash.
I actually don't think Mario's moveset in Smash is all that bad, the only thing that really needs changing is the Down B, which should be Cappy, and the Final Smash, which should be SOMETHING better. But this is pretty good. As for the characters from the next vid, I'd say Samus should be revamped.
I'm not sure how it works in Galaxy, but I think it'd be cool if, when you jumped while spinning, you did the higher damage Spin Jump from Super Mario World.
I always felt like Mario's Final should be his New Super Mario Bros DS's Mega Mushroom; just stomp right through everyone like Ganon's Final. Also how is grabbing a flagpole while fireworks spitting off behind him not one of his victory animations?
I feel like Mario final smash should be Mario grabbing the cape and grabbing the oponnent and in another screen Mario starts punching him then he throws the oponnent to the ground and flys down in high speed hitting the oponnent and causes an explosion to finish it
SPOILERS FOR THE MARIO MOVIE: The Final Smash should be based on the climax of the Mario movie, where Mario and Luigi use the super star to wallop Bowser around Brooklyn using the superstar, if we're going with the idea of making the superstar the Final Smash it would be perfect to base it off that one scene, and make it a cinematic cutscene!
I do believe if there is another smash game with less characters nintendo should take time to revisit the older characters and their move set. Because it’s kinds strange that the new characters have controls that are faithful to their games but the old characters are very generic

Mario's Final Smash, the Mario Finale seems a little... too generic and bland in my opinion. I have a better idea for Mario's Final Smash. He would use the power of the Mega Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros. Mario would start off the Final Smash with a big punch that would send the opponent to World 1-1 of NSMBW. They would stare at Mega Mario in shock and awe, then Mario proceeds to jump and squish them with his rump, launching opponents away when the cinematic ends.

... with that said, this is really charming, love the Final Smash concept taking inspiration from Mario 1, the dash attack is a significant improvement that doesn't stop Mario's momentum by ending in a roll thus increasing his mobility options, and there's a clear love for the Mario series spread throughout. Mostly the post-N64 Mario series, admittedly, but it's so nice to see and would definitely make for an interesting, robust character. Looking forward to the big ape, please treat him nice he's my boy.
Great moveset! My only problem is that there's too much Odyssey moves(I don't hate Odyssey,i in fact love it,but there's just too much) ,and i would make his Galaxy spin the Bair,and make his Nair the Mario World spin.Other than that,you did a good job!
The Mario world spin should be his down air. Also I would make the galaxy spin his down B and have that be the one to reflect projectiles instead of cape (which I will just get rid of)

Everyone thinks that Mario's neutral special is unchangeable, but guess what, it is.
I got an awesome idea which came from Steve's neutral special, like Steve's crafting table, Mario could have a question block floating in the stage. From this question block you can get 3 different power-ups: Fire Flower, Ice Flower and Boomerang Flower.
Mario will start with no power up, that means he will start with no neutral special, he needs to hit this question block to get his neutral special which will last for 30s and after more 30s the block will respawn.
Fire Flower will work the same way it does in the official game.
Ice Flower will freeze the enemy and after that you will be able to grab the frozen enemy and throw him off-stage which will grant you a free kill, but the ice ball will be slower and it will bounce higher than the fire ball making it more difficult to hit.
Boomerang Flower will work the same way as Link's side special.
Also, those 3 power-ups will have different probabilities to get them. Fire Flower will be the easier to get and Ice Flower will be the hardest to get while Boomerang Flower is in between those 2. Ice Flower is the most OP one because you can edge guard with it, if you hit the enemy while he is recovering, he's screwed, so that's why Ice Flower is the hardest to get from the block.
I also have ideas for other moves like:
side tilt: Tanooki Mario spinning with his tail
up tilt: Cat Mario scratching
up special: Propeller Mario (which was shown in this video)
side special: Rock Mario from Galaxy 2
and for the final smash, what about Mega Mushroom.
If there's someone watching this video in 2021, please leave your opinion about the ideas talked about above.
I would settle just with Cappy Spin Throw as his Side B, Cappy normal throw as F-Tilt, the Ground Pound as his D-Throw (like Luigi's)
You are the only other person I've found that's thought of replacing FSpecial with the hat throw, and I'm disappointed this isn't a more common idea. Also, I'd have so that his FSpecial would change to the Odyssey dive while Cappy's out, which would not only act as an approaching hotbox and combo starter/extender, but it'd also give him even more fun movement options!

Would be cool if mario's down special was actually a selection of 3 items refrencing super mario bros 3, there are 3 choices: a mushroom that heals mario, penguin suit which replaces mario's fireballs with ice balls causing to freeze enemies for like 2 or 3 seconds, if mario takes 20% of damage, he loses the power up, also his dash attack is replaced with just sliding if he still has the power up aka suit on him, then finally we have the hammer suit which replaces mario's fire balls with throwing hammers, and if taken 30% of damage, he loses it and yes theres a cool down for each power up mario uses, maybe like 10 seconds per power up
I think a neat that could have been done with Mario is if he dealt a small bit of damage when he footstools someone, just to get that classic Goomba stomping action.
In my opinion, final smash literally just seems like a current Smash Mario up throw - up special combo
I came up with an idea for his back aerial, it would be that animation that Mario makes when his flight runs out with the power of a raccoon and tanooki would be an attack that could trap the enemy if he positioned himself correctly

I think his up special and propeller hat should switch places. Jump punch IS Mario, It should stay a part of his specials.
Also, neutral should be able to shoot either 1 or 2 fireballs just like in every game.

i think Mmario posseess the T-rex with Cappy is a great idea for a Final Smash.

I think the down throw woulf benefit more from the hover nozzle, splashing the enemies below, but the other one works just fine as well
we were talking about it in my discord at one point, don't remember what the specific circumstances are, but i think that we wanted the turbo nozzle more than the hover nozzle
I think the fire flower can become more like a charged move but it has to be stopped at a certain time if his down special changed It can be a spin and become a move that can combo into itself and aerials basically like the spin jump from super mario world or links down air but easier to hit multiple times
This concept is great, though I guess I could nitpick a few things.
First is that I feel there's there's a bit too much Cappy in this seen as he's been in one game so far. Down Smash and Side Special are fine, but I'd make his tilts either what he already has orsomething else, especially since he doesn't use Cappy like that in Odyssey either.
Second, I think the dive as his Dash attack doesn't really... work as a Dash attack, if that makes any sense? I'd say it should remain the slide, but give it a bit more... "animation" like he has in its original appearance. Either that _or_ make it the Blue Shell from New Super Mario Bros. (ds)
Aight- for the dash attack, that’s fair, I completely get why you want it to stay as the slide, it’s functional and makes sense, I just thought it could be more character faithful to Mario in the games.
For Cappy though, I have to disagree! I did a lot of research, which includes me having to boot up odyssey after 2-3 years, and he does in fact do this stuff in game! The f tilt happens when you throw cappy too close to someone, and the up tilt is legit called the “upward throw” in the action guide!

I was thinking about a moveset for Mario too and your moveset is almost as I imagine a new moveset.
The only things I will change are his Fair for the dive, his Hair could use his cape and could help him recover similar to Corrin Bair. Also, his Down air could be a Stomp similar to Dr Mario and his Down B should be the Ground Pound.
That's all I would change, other than that great video man. I'm looking forward for your next videos.

I feel like mario's moveset should come strictly from mario 64 and before, only using powerups and functions from that, and a new character (TOAD) could be introduced that makes use of all the functions of the New super mario Bros series. such as: bubble, prop hat, ice flower, ground pound, penguin suit, blue shell, wall jump, double pow, air spin, triple running jump, and grab is auto-carry.
My moveset ideas:
Up tilt: The same seen the video
Forward tilt: Mario performs the attack used in Mario Bros. when he kicks the turtles out from the sewers. Simillar to the final kick of the Jab
Down tilt: The tanooki tail attack from SMB3 not too much to say here :/
Dash attack: This is called "Long jump" from SM64 also known as "YAHOO!" Works simillarly as Snake's Dash attack.
Nair: Mario creates and pops a bubble as the seen in SMLand 2
Fair: The same seen in the video
Uair: Mario punches with the fist like he does since Mario Bros.
Down air: "Tanooki statue" would work simillarly to Kirby's stone. Can be cancelled only when mario touches the ground
Bair: "Tail swing" Mario will swing the tanooki tail (up down up) simillar to Yoshi's back air
F Smash: Same as shown in the video
Up Smash: Mario throws a Koopa shell upwards as seen in SMW. Simillar range as Palutena's Up smash
Down smash: actual Mario's down smash in Ultimate (breakdance)
Forward throw: Mario will kick the opponent as he does with the Koopa shells
Up throw: Mario throws the enemy upwards and then he shoots a rocket from the FLUDD as seen in the Sunshine rollercoaster boss.
Back throw: the same of ultimate, but Mario says "so long king bowser"
Down throw: mario jumps on the other fighter as he does with goombas, koopas, etc. Then they lay in the ground simillar to Snake's down throw.
Neutral-B: Mario throws the classic fireball from the SMB fire flower. If the button keeps pressed, Mario will throw a boomerang from SM3DLand.
Side-B: Mario will perform a spin from SMG. The damage will be simillar to Kirby's hammer but also will reflect proyectiles (replacing SMW cape) also can help a little when recovering.
Down-B: Mario throws cappy, as shown in the video, if the b button is mashed, cappy will move a little forward to get a longer range.
Up-B: Mario uses the Wing cap from SM64 working simillarly as Pit and Dark pit's Up-B
Also Mario would have three jumps (the first from the ground and 2 aditional jumps) referencing the triple jump from SM64 to Odyssey.
The final smash will be "Mega Mario" Mario eats a Mega mushroom from NSMB and walks through the stage, digging and then smashing every fighter that gets catched by Mario shoes.

Seems like Cappy got a tad too much focus. Then again, I dunno what to swap with. Cape’s a Special, Tanooki is a power up, Star Spin may intersect with Luma. Then again, you also had Cappy as a special, so I dunno. Plumber tools, like the cartoons/movie? :O Other than that, seems like a good moveset.
I agree with 90% of this moveset but the down special doesn’t sit right with me. The cape from super Mario world doesn’t reflect projectiles in that game, why should it in smash.
I actually don't think Mario's moveset in Smash is all that bad, the only thing that really needs changing is the Down B, which should be Cappy, and the Final Smash, which should be SOMETHING better. But this is pretty good.
As for the characters from the next vid, I'd say Samus should be revamped.
I'm not sure how it works in Galaxy, but I think it'd be cool if, when you jumped while spinning, you did the higher damage Spin Jump from Super Mario World.
I always felt like Mario's Final should be his New Super Mario Bros DS's Mega Mushroom; just stomp right through everyone like Ganon's Final.

I feel like Mario final smash should be Mario grabbing the cape and grabbing the oponnent and in another screen Mario starts punching him then he throws the oponnent to the ground and flys down in high speed hitting the oponnent and causes an explosion to finish it

The Final Smash should be based on the climax of the Mario movie, where Mario and Luigi use the super star to wallop Bowser around Brooklyn using the superstar, if we're going with the idea of making the superstar the Final Smash it would be perfect to base it off that one scene, and make it a cinematic cutscene!
Giving Mario a new Final Smash makes me happy, I heavily dislike his current one.

Mario's Final Smash, the Mario Finale seems a little... too generic and bland in my opinion. I have a better idea for Mario's Final Smash. He would use the power of the Mega Mushroom from New Super Mario Bros.
Mario would start off the Final Smash with a big punch that would send the opponent to World 1-1 of NSMBW. They would stare at Mega Mario in shock and awe, then Mario proceeds to jump and squish them with his rump, launching opponents away when the cinematic ends.
