European timber framing has some incredibly strong joints......but Japanese timber framing is just as strong while still being a touch more elegant looking. So fascinating to watch a master craftsman at work. In the old days, only an apprentice could ever see this type of work up close. Thank you Shoyan.
I love how this series has changed my preconception of Japanese carpenters. The picture your usually get on RUclips is someone who works only with traditional tools, and only builds tables and temples. Not somebody who uses a smart mix of power tools and hand tools. Thank you.
Gorgeous. A subtle thing is the additional pressure of fashioning a single joint for hours knowing a minor miscut requiring a new piece of lumber is several hundred thousand yen (thousands of dollars). It takes a special version of professionalism to do that for 40+ years.
It is a rare privilege and luxury that a top Japanese master carpenter publicly shares this treasure of wisdom and artwork from his long-time experience. Shoyan, domo arigato gozaimashita!
I loved it. Your crazy time crafts artist, woodworker skills..... I plan to visit your company in the summer of 2026 rather .... Only if you think it is possible..... keeping in touch 😂😂😂
10:30 was such a satisfying moment, I was surprised by how it started to slide into place! The long experience and precise work is shown in this video.
100% if I had money, I would fly him to america to build me a house. I have never seen such quality and attention to details on american homes. I will be watching all your videos! :)
I will never be able to do that job. You are so talented. I wish I had a teacher like you 😅 I love carpeting but I don't even can to cut a straight line 😅
Wow. The blend of modern and traditional tool use here is phenomenal. All carpenters have a deadline and need speed and efficiency but you don't have to abandon excellent craftsmanship to get there. You just have to know when and where to use tools for precision and tools for speed and areas where precision isn't essential and efficiency is. Your mastery in all of those aspects and understanding is astonishing. Thank you.
Awesome channel, I love all your videos. I’ve never seen better carpentry and the quality of your lumber is incredible. Major respect for what you do. Thanks.
Another very good job you are very talented and I enjoyed watching you that being looked very strong thank you for the good work I will be watching God bless
A truly amazing exhibition of Japanese craftsmanship at its best. I have never seen anything like this & it looks SO much stronger than butting two pieces of timber together then hammering in metal plates which is what I see all the time. The way you 'weld' traditional Japanese hand tools & more modern power tools is just mesmerising. It is just SUCH A PLEASURE to watch you apply your enormous skills & the verbal translation that you have done to help us understand exactly what you are doing & why you are doing it. Thanks for sharing this with us Shoyan. Cheers, Don from South Aust.
Ha! Just 3 days ago I helped a Japanese Carpenter close to Fokuoka building a canopy and he was using exactly this joint. Thx for the video!

Thank you for the translated video.
Undoubtedly, but, definitely, making accurate ,, precise , effective, and strong joint is a unique art , skill , technology, and professionalism.
Very cool to see the combined use of modern tools with "normal" tools!

My thoughts exactly.

Thank you for sharing this with us. It's wonderful to see father and son working together to preserve this knowledge.
The simplest way is to get a longer piece of wood, I think. Love the awesome woodworking skills. Japanese woodwork is admirable.

Hola joint gracias maestro el tutorial de las vigas me sirvió mucho exelente
this is the best
Exelente maestro gracias por en señar me
Wow 😮 check that circular saw 👍
So the English scarfe joint is a variation of this. Both need to be sub millimeter accurate. Excellent.
When you finally reach Boss Bowzer, Shoyan appears.
I love that giant speedsquare/saw guide thing. Where do I get one?
Looks a lot like a scarf joint but done vertically.
Arrigato! 🙂
Shokunin! どうもありがとうございます
Thanks fpr your beautiful video! One thing I dont understand is where is the angle you are talking about! I dont see it....
Arigato!

Do these framing techniques work in a earthquake area? Love the precision here!
Dear sir, you DO work 15x faster!!
