In this video, you'll discover how to craft truly unique-sounding kick drums by using my simple 3-step sound design method. My name is Philip from Pick Yourself, and I've created this channel to help electronic music producers like you make meaningful progress with their music.
You're missing out if you solely rely on samples and know nothing about kick drum synthesis. In today's tutorial, I'll guide you through 3 simple steps to synthesize the PERFECT kick drum using Ableton Live, whether you're into Techno, House, or EDM.
Ableton Live provides various ways for kick drum sound design. While the built-in drum synthesizer gives quick results, it's somewhat limited. The real game-changer is Ableton Live's Operator device. Join me as I walk you through the process, unlocking the full potential of Operator for crafting powerful and unique kick drum sounds.
Stick around until the end, where I'll share some of my favorite kick drum mixing tricks. These techniques will elevate your productions and give your kick drums that professional edge.

    Cool tutorial.
I like hard syncing the cycle of the overtone oscillator to the main oscillator. Then you can ram the frequency of the overtone oscillator way up to get crazier harmonics without having it become uncontrollable, as it always stays locked to the pitch of the main osc.

Serious topic for a video. I watched it with great interest. I use Audiotent Artist Kicks samples, there are very high-quality options (but not all of them), and I’m also thinking about buying a sample pack from Yan Cook in the near future. Thank you very much. Looking forward to the next video 🖤

Love your videos, very beginner friendly. could you make a video about "diy" utility presets in Ableton? It would help a lot for a better workflow

Thanks so much for the great feedback! Can you please give me an example of what you mean with “diy utility presets”? I’m not 100% sure and want to make content that’s as clear as possible so this would help me a lot! Thanks in advance :)

I like the content. I'm always down to learn new approaches. Though I think this way is a little cumbersome. I could have done this in Kick for eg; in half the time with probably better results - because you get a visual and interactive representation of what you're doing..
Dont get me wrong though, I think Kick synthesis in a Synth like Operator or Serum is very interesting and... FUN!

Yeah this video is more for educational purposes. I mainly synthesize kicks with Punchbox or Kick 2. But there’s been a few requests to show that kind of stuff with Ableton stock synths so I went for it.

Haha, lush kicks definitely don’t happen in Techno 😂 but downtempo, Electronica, etc.

I like some of your videos and I'm subbed, but I have some constructive feedback. I think the end result was really poor, with Ableton's own drum samples being better without needing all that effort and three paid plugins!! Also, BWB, Goldbaby, XO and Decap and many more drum sample packs are top-notch, trusted, and used by the pros. And whole 'trash drum packs' is out of date. Those days are over, thank God, as the word has got round on Reddit, KVR or Gearspace what the best packs are. Splice has helped a lot. If you want to try this again, it would be good would be to replicate what the plugin Big Kick does using Analog or Drift if you're brave with as few plugins as possible. That would be good.

You probably misunderstood me a bit here. I’m not at all against using sample packs but I’m a big fan of combining them with your own synthesized ones for a touch of uniqueness. But thanks for the still thoughtful and respectful feedback, I appreciate that anyway :)
