This song was the last song of that concert, and they still showed 120% energy. I have watched this MV dozens of times, and I still get goose bumps. Thanks for your great reaction.

Agree! But this is not a MV, it's actually Live sounds. Studio version sounds different, both Live and Studio version is freaking heavy. But Live is more Heavier because of the rawness of the instruments ..

Gret reaction. Well done on using the version with the subtitles translating the opening kamishibai (the intro bit), that does help to explain a bit about what was happening.
Basically this show was the final step in BABYMETAL transitioning from Idol group sub-unit (it had this narrative running all the way through and even started with a lip-synced dance remix of their song 'Headbanger') to independent metal band - it was also Su-metal's final step in her transition from J-Pop Idol - she was sacrificing her human existence and life as Suzuka Nakamoto, a J-Pop Idol, to be reborn as Su-metal, a Metal Goddess chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.
'BABYMETAL Death' was the first track on the first album and was most often used as the show opener (without the crucifixion) - it is the perfect introduction - that is what the lyrics are:- "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L Death Death Death Death Death Death. Su-metal death. Yuimetal death. Moametal death. BABYMETAL death. Death Death Death Death Death Death."
It is a play on words. There is no 'TH' sound in Japanese, so to a Japanese speaker death sounds like desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means "To be - I am - you are - we are - it is" etc ... so in Japan you might introduce yourself as "Jacqueline Van Bierk desu" (I am Jacqueline Van Bierk).
All they were doing throughout the song was introducing themselves by name and introducing BABYMETAL by name - and 'death' is just the sort of thing you'd expect to be chanted by any self respecting metal band and their audience while the lead singer is crucified.
There were a couple of homages in this performance too. The opening drum riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One' and the statue crumbling at the end pays homage to Metallica's Justice For All tour of 1989 where they also had a statue (Lady Justice) crumble at the end of their shows. The neck brace is a tribute to X Japan drummer/pianist/songwriter/composer Yoshiki who damaged his neck so badly headbanging that he has to wear a neck brace most of the time, especially when performing.
On special occasions 'BABYMETAL Death' was used later in the show - Legend 1997 was the title of the show celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday (and who else do you know that celebrated their 16th birthday this way?) ... and they only crucify Su on special occasions.
So far that has happened 5 times (plus a couple more in the shows at the Budokan they played earlier this year), the last before those was at Legend S in December 2017 to help her celebrate her 20th birthday - and that one had extra flames.
    Did I mention? #notacult

They sacrifice the lead singer to the metal gods, in the next song she resurrects because now she is sent by the Fox God to spread heavy metal all across the world! And they actually achieved that!!
btw @Jacqueline I am totally loving your reactions to BM as they reflect my own! You are super awesome and we both love BABYMETAL!

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀
    And… that's what we call Kawaii Metal. : )
'Legend 1997' is named for Su-metal's birth year.
This concert was held the day after her 16th birthday.
The song 'BABYMETAL Death' is usually used as an opening number to get the crowd hyped up.
    Without the crucifixion. : )
This performance was unusual since it was used as the closing number.
Kami Band members for this concert were guitarists Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and Leda Cygnus, BOH on bass, and Hideki Aoyama on drums.
Their next concert was 'LIVE IN SINGAPORE', their first solo show outside of Japan, held a week later.
'BABYMETAL Death' was the opening song, but as usual, without the crucifixion.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。When you see this video, you should close the curtains. What if your neighbors saw you through the windows smirking and watching a video of dark ceremony where a young girl was being crucified? 😄
Anyway all necessary information about this song has been already told here. No further ... Oh oh! Just one thing, I witnessed newly arranged BABYMETAL DEATH 3 times at Budokan on Feb.19, Apr. 14 and 15, this year. That was short but much heavier than this and I saw Su, Moa and Momoko (one of Avengers) all crucified.

Legend 1997 Apocalypse is a concert celebrating Su-Metal aka Suzuka Nakamoto 16th Birthday 🎉(Seitansai) which took place in Makuhari Messe in Chiba prefecture.
Metallic Fans will notice the opening riffs which derived from Metallica song "ONE" which pays homage to Metallica.
    Live:-
Death Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (stylized as LIVE~LEGEND 1999&1997 APOCALYPSE) is the second live video release by the Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal. The album contains live footage of two shows, entitled Legend "1999" and Legend "1997" (named after birth years of the members of Babymetal), performed in Japan in 2013. It was released in 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray formats on October 29, 2014.
    Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse:,
    Released: October 29, 2014.
    Recorded:
    June 30, 2013 (Legend "1999").
    December 21, 2013 (Legend"1997").
    Venue:
    NHK Hall (Legend "1999").
    Makuhari Messe (Legend "1997").
Genre: Kawaii metal, J-pop, heavy metal.
    Length:
    75:28 (Legend "1999")
    82:24 (Legend "1997")
    Label:
    BMD Fox Toy's Factory Amuse
    Director: InniVision
    Producer: Kobametal
    Babymetal video chronology Live:,
    Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse (2013).
    Live: Legend 1999 & 1997 Apocalypse (2014).
Live at Budokan: Red Night & Black Night Apocalypse (2015).
The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽.
The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
•Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
•Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events.
It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

    Great reaction !
You were almost right, Suzuka/Su-metal was born in 1997. But it was 20th of December so it was almost 1998 anyway. :-)
This concert is to celebrate her 16th birthday and has her birth year as the title. The closing with this song at hat show is insane. Who would have expected Babymetal to do something like this ?
The falling part of the statue is actually a reference to an old Metallica tour where they had the Lady Justice statue fall apart.
They usually used the song for opening. And it's a song which always got the attention of the metal heads at metal festivals. It really is a hype song as an opener.

Nice reaction. The intro sets you up for what's coming. Sacrifices her humanity to become a metal goddess. This show was like a good old fashion rock opera. They whole story being the journey of Babymetal giving up the Jpop Idol stardom to become metal goddesses. What better way to show that then to sacrifice your lead singer for her 16th birthday? 1997 is just the year Su-metal the lead singer was born. Legend in their concert tittles just means it's live. Babymetal manage to keep their kawaii identity even in all this heaviness when they stop to fix Su's hair before they sacrifice her. Yui and Moa look at each other and are like yup it's good take her away. WTH? Makes me chuckle every time. Su at this point has been sacrificed far more than humanly possible must have decided that for the 10 years of Babymetal shows at the Budokan, she wasn't getting sacrificed alone. Moa and the avenger Momoko got sacrificed all together at the start of the show. They did a new version of the song just for the occasion. If you can find it. Worth hearing how heavy that version is. Death was used at the start of their concerts for a while. When the 3rd album came out it was replaced with "In The Name OF". Check out that start of a concert with it from Su's 20th birthday Legend S. Epic level. Or another start of a concert when they did it for one of the 10 years of Babymetal budokan shows. All part of Babymetal live is the best Babymetal. I keep hearing the words "Are You Not Entertained?" when I watch this.

So glad you watched this version with the subtitles and so... but I know it's still confusing, hehe... This was the last song, the "final act" of the concert (Legend 1997 Su-metal seitan sai) or Su-metal holy birthday party. She was born in 1997 (December 20th) so this was the day after her 16th birthday.
The whole concert is a kind of allegory about BABYNETAL's transition from an idol pop group sub-unit to a legit metal band. The show went really crazy (the crowd also contributed to that) and this was the final act with Su giving her human existence as an idol just to reborn as a metal goddess.
And... by the way... just in case... #notacult
    Until next time!

"Babymetal Death" is usually how Babymetal introduce themselves at the start of a concert, but here it is used as a big, insane, messianic, pun finale. Their intro at "Legend 1997" was Ave Maria and a dub step version of Headbanger...no seriously. In this finale there are also a couple of Metallica homages in the statue and the music and of course X-Japan with the neck brace. This performance is best understood in the context of the manic excitement of Headbanger and the emotion of Unfinished Akatsuki that came before it in the concert and if you listen to all three songs together you'll get the complete operatic scope of Su-metal leaving childhood behind, embracing sacrifice and finally being reborn as a metal goddess. Also the DNA helix in the intro to this is also seen on Su's stick mic in Headbanger... Yes it's all very silly, but just go with it. #notacult.
The use of the Christian crucifixion iconography and the statue of Su as Mary juxtaposes death, birth and rebirth. This is echoed in the chant at the beginning; "Death, Death, Death.. , Su-Metal desu"...etc. The "desu" sounds like "death" to Western ears, but in Japanese it means "to be" - so the words are " Death, Death, Death... I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are Babymetal". While this initially seems to be all about death it's also an affirmation of existence and being. Death and life/rebirth exist together just as in the crucifixion. Did I mention #notacult?

They are saying "Su-metal desu", "yuimetal desu", and "moametal desu" (silent "u") which means "I am Su-metal"... and so on. They are pronouncing "Desu" as "Death" so technically they are saying "Su-metal Death"... and so on. This song BABYMETAL DEATH is their intro song for their concerts, but in this concert they performed it at the end.
Legend 1997 is referring to Su-metal's Birth, this is her 16th Birthday Concert (imagine you being worship in your birthday). The story is Suzuka Nakamoto has to die to become a Goddess Su-metal. She is not a self proclaim goddess because she literally won a Metal/Rock Goddess award in Europe way back in 2016.

these was old enough songs. try others. 2nd and 3d album have different sound and conception.
for example - BxMxC , Kagerou, Yava, Awadama Fever. If u want more solo from Suzuki (lead singer) - Akatsuki , Shine, No Rain No rainbow. There is some song from small girls (Moa and Yui) without lead singer. Best one is GJ (for my taste). also Onedari , SisAnger
AND DONT MISS - Road of Resistance, Megitsune. old but good songs
They also have dubstep remix of headbanger, called headbanger (night of 15 mix). they perform this once on birhday of Suzuka (lead singer) instead of original version.
Also they have techno metal songs like Da Da Dance.
    indian metal - Shanti Shanti.
    Irish metal (ft.Sabaton) - Majinai
    and many more.

Babymetal titles their big shows "Legend", So you have Legend I, Legend D, Legend Z; all different shows. This one is Legend 1997, the year Su was born, and a seitan sei for her, a birthday festival. It was done to celebrate her 16th birthday, and is the transition from an idol/pop group to a metal band. They opened the show with their poppiest song to date and closed with this, so there is a theme throughout the concert. This is their opening number - you should check it out ruclips.net/video/OWggmY2BDhE/видео.html

Suggest "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (or IDZ) LIVE at Sonisphere, UK, 2014. IDZ translates to Bullying, No, Absolutely. This performance at Sonisphere 2014 was a HUGE moment in BABYMETAL history, as it legitimized BABYMETAL as a quality, exciting, & innovative new metal group:

May I recommend a reaction to "bring me the horizon" - Kingslayer? An epic collab between bmth and babymetal. Just speaking about contrast 😁

Hello Jacqueline! Love your channel, and the insightfulness and energy you put out in your reaction videos.
I have a request for you; don't know if you've come across the progressive metal band Opeth, from Sweden, before, but they're truly amazing. I'd suggest you do a reaction on their song Ghost of Perdition, a classic masterpiece of theirs. I really think there might be something in this band to peak your interest, not the least in the vocals department. You're in for a surprise, I can guarantee you that!
Here's a link to a very good quality live video of them performing at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre: ruclips.net/video/BAlDEcQMLio/видео.html
Thank you, and continue to be awesome!
    With greetings, from Finland!

You're absolutely right about how hard it is to keep the consistency in timing in this song. The Kami band members have said this is the most difficult song to play for them.
