When this pilot began to be discussed in the media during the 90's, one of the rejected cast members talked about how sad they were that they didn't get the job. But he also added that later they were glad, because, as this film mentions, not only were the actual actors typecast such that they had difficulty finding other employment, but they were also screwed on the residuals. I believe that Jim Backus was bitter about that until the day he died.
It's great that John Gabriel was able to sing such a clever version of South Pacific's "This Nearly Was Mine." It shows he had a sense of humor, even though he was recast. He was certainly more sexual in the pilot with his open shirt than Russell Johnson's more virginal portrayal. Both actors did well in the part. I am surprised that none of the replaced actors ever appeared on the shows in other roles.
Would you believe that a lot of women have commented over the years about how hot they thought Russell Johnson was as the Professor? There's no figuring women's taste....
@@maskedmarvyl4774 I guess I'm one of those women with no taste. Two people can be sexy in different ways at the same time. Complimenting one doesn't take anything away from the other.
@@candacen7779 , I agree with your statement completely. I'm a guy, and I find all other guys equally unattractive. I wasn't saying I thought Russell Johnson Wasn't attractive, in fact his character was one of my favorites on the show. I was just saying that as a guy, there was no way I personally could figure women's taste in men physically.
RIP John Gabriel- May 25, 1931 - June 13, 2021
I like his voice and personality. :)
RIP JOHN

Well, it's logical that Mr. Howell Would be bitter about that....

Wow. Mr. Gabriel sounds like a very talented man, who made good. I would love to know what become of Nancy McCarthy and Kit Smythe.

His role was a School teacher...NOT a Professor.
From Niagara Falls, NY
Nice to see Dr. Seneca Beaulac in a different role.
John Gabriel would have been a HOT Professor had he been cast. He would have shown a lot more skin than Russell Johnson. ;-)

John Gabriel did get to date Mary Tyler Moore on her show. Not too bad of a consolation prize.
I wonder if he sang during his Gilligan's audition...
Longest syndication but no money for the cast. Sherwood Swartz can kiss my ass!! Over 500 million in advertising income over 50 years!!
Mary Ann was dating an attorney and he got syndication residuals written into her contract.
John Gabriel looked like he would have been ok had they not replaced him...
Is this the same John Gabriel who came up with the Internet Fuckwad Theory?
@madvocate0006 you're on a Sheldon Cooper level when it comes to sarcasm aren't you.
Do you have the full documentary?
He was too sexy for the role.
WHY??? (because you didn't TEST WELL... AKA the AUDIENCE did not like you or your character)
