  • From rebuking Pres. Bush over Hurrican Katrina, to backing Pres. Trump, to mounting his own brief run for President, Ye (formerly Kanye West) has made himself a controversial, unavoidable part of American politics, music, culture, fashion, social media, and business for decades. Two of his oldest collaborators and friends, Coodie Simmons and Chike Ozah, explain their belief and fascination in the artist and billionaire entrepreneur Ye -- even amidst some disagreements over politics, values, and business -- as they unveil one of the most unusual, long-running documentaries ever made, Netflix's "jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy." The new film draws on hundreds of hours of previously unseen footage, 20 years in the making, which began when Simmons decided to devote years to filming a then-unknown music producer. In one of the most extensive, in-depth interviews about the project, Simmons and Ozah talk with MSNBC anchor and music obsessive Ari Melber about Ye; his relationship with them, other artists and his mother Donda - whom they knew well; the complex backstory of the project; the racial dynamics that Ye faced in the industry; their discussions about Drake narrating the film; how anyone can tap the lessons of passion and a "genius" mindset; and, on a lighter note, the way a young Ye's retainers figured into his early years. Ye is a complex artist and person who has proven controversial, maddening, gifted, and inspiring to so many people around the world. This digital exclusive interview explores some of the reasons for that, with people who have studied his life and work, with excerpts also airing on MSNBC's The Beat.

I'm a white woman who doesn't listen to a lot of rap. But I remember hearing Kanye's music for the first time and thinking, "What is this?!" You could feel the passion and the music was alive and visceral and stood out. It seems like to be at that level that Ye operated on and that drove his success, was also inherently an imbalance. Or maybe it's not and his story is just not over, but at that point where you just have to pause and reconfigure, self-reflect before moving forward again. Most tremendously successful musicians and actors can look back over a career and lifetime and have a stumbling point that caused them to slow down and go deeper before finding themselves again. It's about getting humble and getting real when life seems to be more unreal for celebrities... no matter where you came from. This was a very interesting interview.

Support who you want to, however, just make sure you fully understand why you support that candidate. A lot of ppl have been voting democrat all their life and don't fully understand why.. A blind vote has no power because the politician hasn't earnt it and doesn't need to show results to keep that vote.

This interview of course along with the Jeen-Yuhs trilogy is so important to the culture. Through the footage collected for this documentary, Coodie and Chike were able to gauge people a long much needed glimpse into the artist/human that is Kanye West. Being misunderstood in the line light isn’t easy, especially when you’re in the process of manifesting your greatness. Coming from Chicago, when you’re not viewed as “street” in terms of music can be discouraging. This was highlighted throughout the entire documentary, which is why knowing who you are and keeping like minded individuals around you at all times is very important. I hope this provides the much need fuel for the up and coming artists to go after their dreams full steam ahead with both feet on the gas. There’s so much talent in the city of Chicago in various aspects of entertainment aside of from music. This documentary gives direct proof to that as well. Shouts to Ari for having these brothers on and allowing them the platform to push our culture in the right direction.

@@D1Snr Having viewed the doc, and been a longtime listener, I can inform you that his pen is gifted. You don’t do a duo album with Jay Z and not have real, hip-hop, bars. Kanye needs time in his current space to formulate the lyrics. He was alive for how many years, working on his songs before they were presentable. Then factor in the polish they received while waiting to be accepted as an artist and drop an album. He needs the same time frame, events need to occur in life and lessons to need to be learned to form new stories. His first few releases were an amalgamation of years of prior sweat equity. The difference between now and the beginning is that his free time is not solely devoted to producing or writing anymore. He won’t reach into that lyrical skill set until he has time to focus on it. It’s the nature of life.
He has outgrown this particular talent, and has been working on other things. Talents have to be sharpened like swords. Even the greatest have to MAINTAIN their greatness.
I hope everyone here is able to tap in to the kind of focus Kanye has. These are the things we should take home with us from the artists we’re fans of. The hunger to reach your own goals.
