At the end, the man playing the piano is the son, the one you thought you were playing the whole time. The mask was seared onto his face, a final determination by his father that the mask was worth more than what was beneath it. He survived. You did not. Fickle grace, but a fair end.
Something that a few of the comments have seemed to miss. The man playing the piano is indeed the prince/king/main character's abused son. However, if you look closer, the woman in green was the young maid who was kind to the son. The younger woman standing in between the piano man and the woman-in-green wears the same broach/necklace as the woman-in-green but has the same facial features as the piano man. She is their daughter and the granddaughter of the now dead prince. So it seems like the son at least got a happily ever after.
For some reason, the final song is seriously pulling my heartstrings and I can't help but feel for that king. He's evil, alright. But I can't help but feel sorry for this pathetic man.
You must have a good heart to be capable of feeling pity for monsters like him. But the message is pretty clear; his only worth is to burn in heck. The man killed his own wife, ended the lives of many innocents, and mutilated his son for selfish petty reasons. His suffering and death were products of his own choices. You can feel pity if you want, it’s perfectly valid for someone this pathetic. But regardless it’s a good day on earth when sins catch up to sinners, and the victims survive and prevail.
It’s really cool how the whole time the game makes you feel sorry for the protagonist, thinking he’s the son, only to find out that your playing as the father. Then I immediately think “oh wow. Man I really got what I deserved then huh 😭”
@@smileguyanimations8776 Actually, I was sorry for the protagonist being a horrible person who completely got what he deserved. Why the writers make it look like you feel pity for that asshole?
The end was the only half decent thing he ever did and even that makes us feel dissatisfied sure he's in Hell but that's a better place than Jail which he would have been sent to for his crimes.
So it goes (and please correct me if wrong): 1. The Camera which took unrealistic pictures of the prince for vanity. 2. The (cat of nine tails?) whip. 3. The wine goblet 4. A butterfly costume 9. A mask (forced son to wear) 10. His wife's necklace. 11. A baby rattle? 12. The noose.
I think that the father singing during the true ending is him coming to terms that he doesn't deserve a second chance, and his death is a more befitting end for the vain egotistical father
I’ll wager that these items you collect are core pieces of his past, very dark and painful things he locked away deep below to forget them. After his first journey, his memories have reopened those dark corners, and left him with no choice to get them once again. Him collapsing from collecting them could be that the trama behind them is so intense, it’s too muchto handle and he passes out. It’s also why it’s so dificult to reach them, as it’s so much more difficult to face such a dark past, and moreso to take back the things that scarred the most. In the end, his sins weighed heavy, and weither intentional or not, he payed the price of his past.

After the fire incident that he provoked himself after seeing his ugly reflection, he got hospitalized and recover from the burned injuries. When we start playing him, he surely blacked out after overdrinking and lost all of his memories. @@eliottdeletraz97 I don’t think he was trying to end his life, you see when you play the game and you see him climb up near the noose, the other side shows him actually climbing near the window leading to the beautiful outside world, but in order to get himself to hang on the noose, he needed to jump over the boxed and be beside the window and switch and go through it, but switching would make it so his real self would actually fall onto the noose, breaking the platform below and killing him

from the brooch colors, and flashbacks i think, the maid in the middle with the blue brooch and blue bow is the younger maid who befriended the son, and the maid in green with the green brooch was close with the mother and son (and was maybe the one responsible for attempting to poison the player/father/king)
The pianist is his son, the one's on top of the piano is his wife and dog, the one's beside the son are the maids that poisoned him, the floating ghosts are all his babies that he killed for being ugly anc the others are his staff members
