I’ll wager that these items you collect are core pieces of his past, very dark and painful things he locked away deep below to forget them. After his first journey, his memories have reopened those dark corners, and left him with no choice to get them once again. Him collapsing from collecting them could be that the trama behind them is so intense, it’s too muchto handle and he passes out. It’s also why it’s so dificult to reach them, as it’s so much more difficult to face such a dark past, and moreso to take back the things that scarred the most. In the end, his sins weighed heavy, and weither intentional or not, he payed the price of his past.

Something that a few of the comments have seemed to miss. The man playing the piano is indeed the prince/king/main character's abused son. However, if you look closer, the woman in green was the young maid who was kind to the son. The younger woman standing in between the piano man and the woman-in-green wears the same broach/necklace as the woman-in-green but has the same facial features as the piano man. She is their daughter and the granddaughter of the now dead prince. So it seems like the son at least got a happily ever after.
