    Behind the scenes at a Christian training college for women teachers in Madras (Chennai). The school was founded in 1923 and still exists today, now known as St Christopher's College of Education. The film, an amateur production on 16mm by the London Missionary Society, contains a wealth of fascinating details including the trainees giving lessons to Indian children in several age groups.

    Wonderful film.Must have been taken in the late 1930's as the college moved to this campus only in 1933.I lived close by. Further down the road towards the end was the Tram shed where all the Red trams plying Puraswalkam and adjoining areas were stationed. I think in the 1960s Trams were taken off the roads and the Tram shed became Periyar Thidal.That road was full of Bungalows where a lot of Anglo Indians lived.Vepery was a nice place to live in those days.

    How delightful! We also got to see the upper echelons of Indian Society as most families wouldn't allow the women in their family to get educated (even upper castes), it's the very Rich even amongst the upper castes who probably allowed the women in their family to get education or those who had the resource to spend money. I mean this as no shade, just that irrespective of castes, women weren't allowed to get education until after Independence.

    • @nikhilsingh2475
      @nikhilsingh2475 3 года назад

      No. That's not entirely true. It depended on the families. Women living in cities and towns had access to education, it was the villages and rural areas that had such orthodox practices. My great grand mother was an educated lady, went to school and also got education at home. It is however somewhat true that most of the higher education was limited to upper caste women and ladies that belonged to aristocracy and landed gentry.

Without teacher qualities many are becoming the teachers. Many teachers are talking in the schools also always about the ornaments and stares. Completing the syllabus is important now. There are no moral stories.in the schools. After seeing this teachers training school I am remembering my B. ed training days in Mysore.

    I don't think this is from 1920, and is most likely from a later date. Something about the clothes, and also the modern style of school bus, and also the rickshaws, seems to indicate that it might be from later, perhaps the late 1930s or 1940s. Regarding the clothing, the modern (Tagore-style) of sari was rare before the 1930s. The style wrapped between the legs was the norm. Also, younger girls and the boys are wearing Western style clothes. That too, was very rare or unknown in conservative towns such as Madurai. The BFI should check its dating of the reels.

    Amazing amazing! Really graceful. Each one knew their role too well. Sitting on the floor and eating in a more disciplined manner. Simplicity at its best. Teachers sitting along with students for lunch and students serving other students is a great initiative at that time. The dresses of girls and staff looked tidy and neat. I think the student Padmini must have been a school leader or some thing. I Makes me wonder and curious as to What Padmini might be doing now?

    I was expecting to see more positive comments in this section but found out quite few negative comments about how this institution might have been a place of conversion.And my first thought was,here I am watching a video women getting college education during 20s tamil nadu (one of the most conservative state) and the people giving attention to a speculation over this almost miraculous condition.This literally shows how constant criticism of minority religions in this country has affected it's generally population.Instead feeling happy for those empowered women,these people cared more about a abstract concept.Did any one of these "conversion hunter" commenter thought about why these girls had to to church oriented college?? Because most Hindu/UC funded Colleges were men's only college during those times.This college-St Christopher's is actually a part of American College of madurai,which was one of the first college which permitted women into it. And it was the one of the first college to allow transgender people as it's students too.This college has given our country a Pulitzer prize,a Padma award and many such awards and recognition from its alumni.And yet , instead of concentrating on its efforts to provide quality education to Indians before and after independence ,all these naysayers concentrate on was it's name. Such people need to grow up and stop being so insecure.

      So much negativity in the name of pseudo nationalism. Sad to see so many good things been buried for petty politics. To hide their incompetence, Politicians spreading this nationalism after 70 years of independence.

      LOL,No. These college exist even now and 80-90 percentage of students who study there are regular Hindus. These colleges were famous for their etiquette and bringing people different and caste and religion together,if anything this colleges were reason why castism based segregation was reduced amongst the young people in pre-independence india.
