I knew right away when getting my skink that they were a Halmahera. I actually just got mine this last Sunday and picked up a good hydrometer and a spray bottle so I can keep the humidity up. This is my second reptile and I'm ready for the challenge as keeping my corn snake was a little boring. I wanted a Northern, but after enough searching, could only find the Halmahera. Though, I am glad a Halmahera is a little smaller as my enclosure is just a little over the recommended minimum for a Northern.
mine is a merauke 🤓 Love from Indonesia! 🦎 oh and the Irian Jaya actually has some kind of trident (trisula) mark on top of their head which is kinda cool :3
Thanks for this, guys. I now realize that I have a Halmahera, and need to get my humidity up higher. Its probably why the molt has taken so long. It's been down to Northern levels - 30% during the day and 70% at night. It seems to be getting annoyed with having the shedding skin on for so long. Also I'll need to mix some moisture holding substrate into my coco fiber, which is too dry and doesn't hold the misting that I do. Coco is also too soft to assist with molting.
Wish you had talked a bit about captive bred vs. wild-caught on blue tongues. A lot of people seem to buy Halmaheras without knowing the risks they're taking on with a wild-caught reptile.
Panana(blue tongue) in not protected animal in here, even in halmahera irian jaya where ever the habitat panana often killed because they thought it poisonous
I feed mine 80% veggies 20% fruits with some dried meal worms but ill also feed roaches quail eggs horned worms and dry dog food my female wouldnt touch wet food but my new male doesnt have a problem with any food i forgot i do still supplement with 3 types of Arcadia that i mix to get everything literally and i do give bluey repeshy
One thing id bring up is that crossbreeding between species or subspecies isn't necessarily even irresponsible as long as it's done intentionally and with a decent understanding of their genetics. Hybrids are generally much more common in the wild than people assume, and in general hybrids are a very common part of the process of domestication and the creation of truly domesticated subspecies of tamed wild animals.
Good show you guys. I live in Indo and what you said is pretty accurate. As always some differemces. If you see the gigas from Ceram or Sorong or Jayapura they are different than Halmaheras. There are other locales around Merauke ( mer ow key)😄
I think I have an Irian Jaya, not sure tho. The breeder said he was a northern and helmehara mix. Yet, all the pictures of irian jayas look just like him Edit: also, don’t worry, I’m not breeding mine.
Thank you so much for your video makes me able to identify my blue tongue is Halmahera! I wonder if fir bark with moss is ok for the substrate for Halmahera?
My halmahera has white and black colour but his eyes are reddish. So he is the silver-face of the halmahera or maybe something else? Need your help! Thanks
I almost got a pair of meruke for 1k for an adult proven breeder pair but i was on a mission at that reptile show to grab a few female ball pythons and surprisingly they had 4 morphs i wanted
I have a bluey, and they’re holding them... not exactly correctly. They get very stressed when not all limbs are supported, so they could just be focusing on that, and not fighting each other.
I saw this and I have to say there are a few rather important things you got wrong. All basking reptiles require UVB, as it allows them to process D3 for calcium. Without it they can get metabolic bone disease. Halmahera skinks grow to a max length of 20-24" and as such, require at the very absolute minimum a 50-55 gallon tank to avoid stunting their growth which can cause them medical issues later on. If you keep a lizard in a tank that's too small it won't grow to full size and won't live as long on average. Lastly blue tongues require a much more specific diet than what you have mentioned here, as saying they just aren't "picky" is to say you can feed them "whatever" Dog food, chicken, turkey, crickets, pinkies, squash, green beans, bananas, horn worms, arugula (might not like this), beet greens, collard greens, dandelion greens, endive, borage, cactus pad/pear (deburred), earthworms, and snails are all the dietary staples for blue tongue skinks, you should generally alternate between vegetables, protein, and fruits when you feed them as to keep the diet varied. Do NOT feed them onions, avocado, rhubarb, lettuce, or literal candy. Spinach is a very VERY rare thing to feed them as it contains an insane amount of calcium and can impact them if fed too often.
Not all require UVB, tegus, monitors, blue tongues and even diurnal snakes that bask like American rat snakes all do fine without UVB as long as they are getting regular D3 and calcium supplementation. UVB is always recommended for diurnal animals but it's not always required.

Try zoomed forest floor, just freeze or bake it before use since it can have bugs or bug eggs
Love the black and white! Glad to see y'all back!

Very few people are breeding Halmahers. Hopefully I'll get mine to breed this season.
When I got mine I didn’t know it was wild caught but shes doing fine just feisty and hissy
@@gravityphoenix212 That's my scenario too. She's nice, if I wanted a pet micro-croc, but I wish I could get her tame like these guy's Halmaheras.

“They are not picky eaters at all.” My blue tongue skink begs to differ XD
Mine too. I have an Irian Jaya and he refuses almost anything that isn't meat. He's even fussy about insects, though he does love roaches.
Gravity Phoenix mones picky too its only a dew months old he pics at his meat and i dont under stand why

Id love to see a snow one which is the axanthic and albino together that would be sick
In Indonesia all species of BTS were about $30 - $80.

Well its about time. I've been waiting for you guys. I know you've been a bit quiet coz of the storms, but it was well worth the wait. Great vid!
Ya’ll have some of the most beautiful merauke i’ve ever seen!

Edit: also, don’t worry, I’m not breeding mine.
That would make sense as there is a theory that the Irian jiya are an established population of naturally occurring hybrids

Whats the difference to the Merauke Skinks?
Great info, thanks guys :))
hey can you ship your reptiles for sale to and through canada
When did these become popular in the pet trade? as far as I knew Indonesians were always harder to obtain and I thought most were wild caught.
Thx love your passion :)
My halmahera is 21 inches
Nice! Where did you get him/her?
I have heard blue tongues do not get along well with each other at all, is this true? At 0:36 they seem perfectly fine being in such close proximity!
