    I'm working on building out the ultimate production van for life on location and on set here in the UK. Mostly to make my life easier, but it's already having the knock on effect of adding value to productions by having kit with me that comes in handy that I might not have normally packed.
    There's only so much room in this beautiful long wheel based Vauxhall Vivaro, but I'm keen to utilise it to the best of it's ability and make this set up work for me for at least the next decade.

    I’m a gaffer and small equipment rental house in Toronto specializing in lighting and grip. After having purchased a large sprinter from a friend retiring his large lighting and grip rental company that shut down, and it already having a beautifully finished and it having beautifully fabricated, fully welded custom interior, and custom storage areas, I can say that needs change, and equipment changes, over time, including equipment cases, so my advice for anything that you are still building or changing is to have systems that allow for easy changes and lots of secure attachment points.

      That sounds like some solid advice Mir, thanks! When I re-fit I’ll look at making the dividers and shelves modular. Stuff I can change to suit changes over time. Great shout 👍🏻

    Bit late now but the DP I worked for for a few years had a boot that went up vertically instead of two fold out doors on his van, that way the boot doors doubles as an awning. He also had c-stands that slid under everything else In a small crevice below the wooden boxes. Definitely the best way to go though, saves a lot of valuable time, not just packing in and out, but also location to location.

      I would love it if by side doors did this... although it might make some parking spots a little tricky.

    This is great, 1 thing that might be nice to have on the next version is some sort of pass through for speed rail or 8x frames. Maybe you have that already and it’s just hard to tell.
    Good luck!

      Thanks Dallas! I’ve got this one covered, not sure why I didn’t think to share that in this video, I’ve got a hatch that opens up and left an opening in the bottom frame so I can store stuff from the back doors all the way to front compartment of the van.

    What about using aluminum extruded t slot rail (2020 or 1515) to make the shelving framework.. then it can be adjusted as kit and experience change

      @@ScottPetersFilms I'm working on upfitting a former postal truck into a 2-ton grip truck with aluminum extrusion right now - will try to remember to report back in a month or so as to whether it worked or not. But it's pretty promising so far.

    Killer. Have you looked at three folds vanbuild? Or any others on RUclips that are really well done? Also how do you feel about leaving kit in the van all the time? I assume you just take cam and lens kit out inside your house normally?

    • @ScottPetersFilms
      @ScottPetersFilms  Год назад +2

      Yeah, I've watched all the ones I could find, as well as being a member of a pretty inspiring production van group on Facebook. Most of the time the only things I leave in there over night are the big bulky heavy things like grip, stands and the cart. Camera and lenses come in with me every night and if I'm not shooting for a while so do lights.

      @djtimodj Год назад +1

      Ah good to hear. What's the Facebook group name? I'm still trying to avoid buying a van as I hate driving vans long distances but I can see it in my near future 😂

    • @ScottPetersFilms
      @ScottPetersFilms  Год назад +2

      It’s called “production vans and grip trucks”, but I’d avoid joining it if you trying to not buy a van as it’ll make you want one.

    What do you use for security? That is a lot of expensive gear to leave out when you are traveling and stay at hotels?

    • @ScottPetersFilms
      @ScottPetersFilms  Год назад

      I don’t leave the super expensive stuff in there overnight, cameras, lenses, batteries always come inside. I have additional antitheft locks fitted, anti peel plates also on the inside of all the doors, immobiliser in the engine, steering wheel lock on and the majority of my Peli cases have AirTags in them. I also generally always look to park it in view of security cameras and packed against a wall when I can.
