Simply one of the most original comic minds of the modern age. His abrasive, abstract, stream-of-conscious rants opened the door of surrealistic stand-up comedy in ways unseen before. His commitment to his own dont-care-if-it-fails aesthetic was a genuine fearlessness unlike any other performer. He went beyond blue comedy & took it to a new level with The Aristocrats. He found ways to make you laugh by embodying the absurdity of life with the sheer racket of his unforgettable voice and his most wickedly hysterical laugh.
The first rule of comedy is funny and Gilbert was always that. Like Joan Rivers, Gilbert didn't give a f**k

That's very true. God broke the mold. After thousands of years of making Jews with the Gilbert Godfrey mold even God was growing sick of listening to them. It happened one day on God's favorite cloud when his last Gilbert Godfrey creation looked at God and said, "Do you like parrots?".
God picked up the mold and broke it in his bare hands, then cast the splintered, golden fragments from heaven into hell whereupon it melted in a vast Abysmal lake of superheated fire where dolphins roasted on black metal spits, surrounded by succubus, male demons with large penises and an upside down crucifix. Now we're finally down to our last Godfrey and there'll never be another.

Gilbert is an 'acquired' taste... an alphabet soup of odd/off-color musings that piques your interest with unusual subjects and then dances all around them without ever delivering a knockout punchline. I can't even imagine what else this quirky man could ever do but comedy. He eventually found his natural home in bawdy roasts... vulgarity being the icing on his cake. Never know what to expect from him, but you know it'll be different. God help you if you even try to watch his act while drunk or stoned.

Sure thing, Jeff Altman was a standout, wasn't he ?... He was so flip, it was just great fun !!

@@mellotronage7073 My favorite Jeff Altman punchline during a Letterman appearance (imitating a male flight attendant during choppy weather), "Relaaaaa-aaax. We're landing. We're la-aaaanding." Would get him crucified these days but by gawd i carried that around in my head for decades to retrieve when I needed a laugh.

I thought Gilbert was well-known in NYC clubs before and after his SNL stint... strange it took him almost 4 years to get onto LN. (He would have been perfect doing what Steve Fessler did in the premiere, for example). A long time back, someone else on YT had posted the first appearance and the sound was awful to the point that it sounded like the audience was bored. Thanks for posting this; they clearly loved Gilbert.

Was a really great documentary. He is a very interesting person that almost no one really knows even though he’s been in the public eye since 1985.

Very original. It’s like proto-meta-anti-comedy. Experimental, and traditionally funny at the same time. Nothing like him since.

Hilarious that he does the Moby Dick joke a second time but fubs the premise, then just commits as somehow manages to make it work anyway.

I always liked that Gottfried was played on by either the "Thicke of the Night" or 1980-81 "SNL" themes

On Gilbert's podcast, Paul mentions that he gave Gilbert a choice of either one, and Gilbert said to use both. Paul said that might take too long and apparently Gilbert said, "it's OK, I'll wait." (I might be mis-remembering this).

At the time Gilbert was obviously pissed they gave away his big moment in the film, but that scene is iconic. 29:39
