You're right. He inspires us because we are justifiably envious of someone who legitimately has a passion, and is incredibly good at that passion. That makes him inherently interesting within a somewhat narrow lane. The fact that he can't name a favorite book also makes him slightly less interesting when you venture out of that lane. I think Alex is amazing, and his free solo of El Cap is the greatest athletic achievement in the history of humankind.
i like this guy alot, but i can see so much loneliness though. it kinda makes me sad. im sure its hard to talk to him about something that is not climbing related.
I love how his default answer/attitude is rather jaded, but then when he realizes something does make him happy or inspire him, he becomes so beautifully disarmed.
Hah I liked this interview. Alex was like yeah half of these questions don't apply to me, and I totally agree, who has all these random favorites. Climb on!
It’s sort of a shame to waste time asking him questions that have no inherent value...when you could go deep with him in just two questions. The best part of this entire thing is his facial expression, “I don’t know...does it matter really?” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Finally someone else who thinks that GoT is distressing. Completely agree, can't watch it because I can't get the disturbing images out of my brain afterwards.
I like his interview, I know some peeps didn't like the 'i don't know' answers but remember what this guy does for a living, i don't think he needs more excitement in his life!
I marvel: you have this amazing person in front of you and you ask him inane questions like favorite super hero, least favorite color, least favorite food......and you can tell, he's like WHATEVER.......
Honnold is refreshing for non climbers and genuine for climbers because he isn’t profound at all and never claims to be. He’s antithetical to the news media and that culture, and emblematic of passion pursuits. He’s a really humble, ordinary, clever, unimpressive and disciplined personality that has pocketed some of the most bizarrely inspiring physical feats to those outside his community, and he’s managed to not come off as a sell-out or phony within the crag community. Quite the balancing act.
He has a minimalist mindset. A closeness to the purity of being ¨just human¨. Non-corrupted by today's cold concrete jungle and corporate society. Not driven by the materialistic consciousness.
Hi Im Dick, exactly what I was thinking but wasn’t sure how to state it! Well said! Alex is living the life so many of us wish of! Keep doing what you do Alex!
Hahaha, how naive! He is sponsored by The North Face and literally wears their clothes in every single video or photo. If that isn't capitalism, then what is? I mean, I don't judge him--he has to make a living too, but get a grip!
@@aiai-j7i yes, he wears that stuff because it makes him a living... but I guess you know that he obv doesnt really care what he wears ... thats a big difference
Bill Kreutzmann once said his favorite drumming experiences are when all four limbs are working together like a dance. Alex has described climbing similarly, like dance movements. It is telling that he spur-of-the-moment identified drumming as the instrument he most would like to learn.
Very well balanced individual. For the most part society hasn't been able to twist the hell out of him. He is what he is and he's very comfortable being Alex no help wanted needed or solicited. He thinks for himself very rationally. 👍up Alex!
Saddened by the board game response but love this guy... Need some board games? Seems like climbing lifestyle and games go hand n hand. I Could recommend
the way he said abe lincoln, winston schmidt was right. every american thinks of abe lincoln once a day statically speaking. incredible how his mind is so powerful 🤩
Horchata is, like, 50% sugar - but it does come in pink! Alex! what about Norman Clyde - he used to solo out and top so much Sierra granite from about 1930, AND he taught school & lived right down in Big Pine - There's a favorite. Fred Becky ended up in Bishop - If climbers don' know these guys better than Lincoln - they aren' t climbers. . .
I thought this was going to be a train wreck but it was a cool interview, anyone that has watch Alex before knows the man need a good 10 minutes to explain himself incase you might think he's cocky or something.
He said something like "im mormon without being mormon, I think the whole religion thing is stupid" while climbing somewhere in Utah. I only remember the quote because everyone thinks I am too because I dont drink alcohol or coffee, I also hate smoking. I dont know, I just don't want weird things in my body I guess?
My mom : Want some COOKIES ? Me : Yeai , Cookies =) A wild Alex Honnold appers from the window : Can i have some Cookies too ? I live on a top floor of Burj Khalifa ?
This guy is FAR too honest and thoughtful to be doing rapid-fire interviews like this. These interview gimmicks have become inexplicably popular recently, and it's really negligible whether they add any actual value at all. There's no context, it's just nonsense disguised as clever or witty banter by media and promotional companies who have sacrificed any semblance of journalistic integrity LONG ago. I like Alex Honnold, but I have a serious problem supporting such crap I gotta go. ✌
True example of someone who has found his passion in life. Doesn't care about anything else. Inspiring.
Exactly. He's my hero, one of the coolest guy ever.
cookies ?

"Basically Mormon, only without all the God stuff"
Yes, incredible. Hard to imagine life without coffee or beer.
Brilliant! I smiled throughout due to Alex's humble honesty.

Favourite beverage ?
Water.
"I'd love to live somewhere permanently, but I don't know where."

"WHAT??"
He’s adorable!!!
Most of these questions say nothing about the person answering them... I learn nothing from knowing what a person's favorite color is..
I learned that he has the same favorite color that I do.
I love how he doesn't care about anything besides climbing. I also obsess over one thing alone at a time, I don't know why.
