Lovely stuff. I’d argue that the Triple J set (Bad and Bellyache) was a one off stylistic choice. Never heard her do that “happy birthday mister President” vocal at any other time. I’d be interested in your take on their Nylon sessions. She was only 14 and it is stunning with very different (much louder) acoustic versions of ocean eyes and bellyache. Full chord closure and a bit of reverb. Cheers!

hey, fellow vocal coach here - love your videos, first off. i did want to say, however, that face she makes doesn't strike me as the face of someone straining. her facial muscles look relaxed, it's always seemed to be more of an elvis like aesthetic snarl than anything else, which i think is cool. i think facial affectation is very important in live performance and people forget that vocalists aren't just instrumentalists -- they are performers, meant to captivate the audience. so if you see a vocalist singing emotional ballads like this and they make funny faces, i find it's usually at least a bit put on to convey the message. at least I know that my weird faces were something I never leaned away from as long as they didn't cause me pain or affect my tone. actually over the years i make weirder and weirder faces playing live, and people seem to respond better and better each time. but ya. long rant. whoops! i just think she'd look like she was straining in her neck and jaw muscles if she was straining
I like to listen to the track and then the live performance to get a fresh idea of how it sounds so I can pick up on differences in the live to prerecorded to see if it's actually live
This is gorgeous, I have loved her from the beginning. Maybe she's at a better place in her life... and more mature in her singing... I just know, she's amazing.

I know it doesn't fit much of your client list as far as musical taste and a reaction but check out Ren (hi ren or chalk outlines) he's one of the few musicians that have inspired me in the last 20 years. hi ren is more theater than singing but its amazing and powerful, chalk outlines shows his voice. Also him and sam busking is an amazing video vocally.
