Yep yep! Some say audio is more important than the video. If you have a low quality video that has great audio, your viewer is more likely to watch longer than a high quality looking video with bad audio. Not sure where I heard that, but I believe it.
I'm the person who messaged you on IG a few weeks ago and this helped me so much lol I'm an electrician, this stuff is my hobby so I need these tutorials!!! 😅
As one of the lucky first to see this great video I just want to say how helpful your advice is especially on EQ and volume adjustments. Thank you for making this. More please.
Dude …. You are always on point .. your tips have help me out so much thank you… It’s crazy but the EQ lesson you taught it in another video and i have been using it in every video … thanks again
Wow very nice video! What do you think about using techniques (like you did with music at the end) to isolate and remove certain annoying frequencies from the voice track? I've seen videos of YTers teaching this, but not sure if it's really a great idea.... like kinda sweeping / scanning for annoying frequencies and cutting those out. Or is this just going down some rabbit hole that's not worth it?
Also... does following all the steps in this video take care of adjusting the overall volume level which you upload to RUclips? Or after applying these... you still need to go back and adjust the overall global volume level to be loud enough for RUclips?
One thing I've noticed is that the wave form in the time line doesn't always match the levels you see in the meters. Eg: I drop some compression on a voice over and in the time line it's in the red, but in the meters, it's ok. *_The timeline lies._* I usually run my music much higher than -25dB, but I do motorcycle travel videos. I'll duck it several dB when I'm talking but even so, it's generally no lower than -18dB. Some music (especially w/o drums or maybe bass) I'll run much hotter or during a quieter section. I have some audio engineering background, so the compressor was something I understood, but the way they did the limiter has always bothered me. But your explanation of it was the light bulb I needed. Btw, voice isolation is essential to reduce the wind noise for motovlogging. Don't put your mic right in front of your mouth. You'll be more likely to get plosives that way. Put it about 45 degrees off axis, but pointed at your mouth. That will help minimize those nasty P's, T's, B's, etc.
Yo! Great tips! How can I apply them when editing dialogue in surround sound mode. I get tripped up on how to use the limiter properly when I select Pan> Surround> Dialogue
Dylan is there a Final Cut Pro audio course out there that you recommend? Everything I’m finding on RUclips doesn’t really define a set workflow. Every tutorial is totally different and uses different audio effects. I need a full breakdown and understanding of audio within Final Cut Pro. Thanks!
Not at the moment, but Dylan Bates and I will be creating one in 2025 😊 I do have a color grading course for FCP as well as those who have the plugin Color Finale though www.fcpcolorgradingmasterclass.com
I usually prefer mono, but so long as the stereo sound sounds 'straight on' and your voice isn't louder on one channel compared to the other, then that works too.
Would you ever consider doing a course on this? 2 distinctive voices, environment (wind/rain/birds/etc), real human SFX (footsteps, breathing, etc), impact six (whooshes and the like, and music). Maybe I'm in the minority but I learn best with a course that's one central repository and step by step process & order.
Definitely! It’s something I’m hoping to finish in the next few months actually. You can sign up for the waitlist so you get notified once it’s released 😊 www.dylanjohndickerson.com/courses
Use the compressor and limiter to keep your voice audio around that -6 to -3 range. And have your music audio be anywhere from -21 or -25 to -35 dB depending on the song intensity and how much you want the song to be heard in the background. Also used channel EQ to shape your music so your voice fits better in the mix.

Great idea, amigo!
Thank you so much for this video. Definitely a lot of great helpful tips.
No problem! Thanks so much for watching and commenting 😊
This is a question I've had forever and struggled to find the answer. THANK YOU!
Happy to help 😊 thanks so much for watching!
Thank you!!! Everyone always says audio is half your video but nobody has made it so easy to understand. 🎉🎉🎉

Best videos . I have been waiting for this video
Glad I could finally get to it! Thanks for watching 😊

Awesome to hear it helped out! Keep on creating! 🤙🏼
For quick adjustment, I like the tonality (Compressor) and uniformity (dynamic) in the audio inspector. Sorry for bad english.
Yooo bro this is the video I needed so bad 😂 thanks man, I’m the guy who asked about background music volume few weeks ago
Thanks for the suggestion, dude! Glad it helped 👊🏼
Great advice. Very many thanks...
Thanks for watching, Richard! 🙏

Pleasant to watch and really concise tutorial. Great info! Going to apply this for sure.

Really, solid audio tips Dylan. I really mean that. Brilliant editing as always! Btw you have amazing teeth!
Thanks so much, Chad! I really appreciate that. And thanks again. It guess it helps that my parents are dentists 😅

@@dylanjohndickerson Always! Not related to this video but have you been using mCaptions? I'm having some some really annoying issues with it 🤯
Another fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥 video with excellent tips!!!! We aren't worthy of your brilliance!!!!
😂 well I don’t know about that, but thanks I much, dude!

SOUND advice haha nice one mate...as always great video

Good fast overview for typical audio work.
I'm curious why you use FCP Limiter vs Logic Limiter?
Thanks for watching! Not sure actually. Probably because it's what I've always used and I've grown accustomed to it.

Hey brother! Funny you mention that. I’m actually making a course right now about it. I’m hoping to have it out by January 😊
@ Awesome! It’s been a total pain getting the audio just right 😅
Do you have Course for fcp
Not at the moment, but Dylan Bates and I will be creating one in 2025 😊 I do have a color grading course for FCP as well as those who have the plugin Color Finale though www.fcpcolorgradingmasterclass.com
What would you set the limiter levels to if you've got just a music track with no audio?
The same settings. I like to keep my voice hovering around -3 always
3:58 why you gotta come after me like that? 😢
😂 don't flatter yourself. The only time I think about you is when I watch Lord of the Rings and see your better looking brother Legolas.
Cracker jack mate!! Mono or Stereo for voice overs?
I usually prefer mono, but so long as the stereo sound sounds 'straight on' and your voice isn't louder on one channel compared to the other, then that works too.
I typically just use the 'Loudness' feature built-into FCPX

Shouldve done an off and on comparison with the EQ on music. Great tips though.
I was thinking about it but the video is already 8 minutes long. Showing before and afters would’ve tacked on a couple minutes.
Great video. I need to change some settings!
so the main outcome of this video is to keep voice around -6dB and music around -25dB, am I right?
Use the compressor and limiter to keep your voice audio around that -6 to -3 range. And have your music audio be anywhere from -21 or -25 to -35 dB depending on the song intensity and how much you want the song to be heard in the background. This is absolutely amazing, but I hope you don’t have to buy the new computer in order to use all of it. I could see Apple totally doing that.
I assume you'll have to have Apple Silicon, but we'll see!
