Hi there, I'm born in Bruges... a little secret to share ; the bistros at Grand Place (where you ate that stew) aren't bad, but the better ones are hidden in the smaller streets (and they are usually cheaper as well). A fun fact about the small apetizers you get when ordering beer ; I've read that they do that to follow an old law that could be used by people not wanting to pay. You see, there seems to be an old law that stipulates when serving alcoholic beverages you need to serve something hearty to prevent intoxication. When serving alcohol without something else you could give people a legal reason not to pay for your drinks. It was in the news about a year ago when a lawyer used that law in the defence a table skimmer .

@davkaufmaneatstheworld i lived Belgium for 6 months, I'm from italy, I know good food and Belgium impressed me. Vol au vent is actually very easy to make at home yourself, when I discovered this dish in Belgium, I did some research and now I make it atleast once a month at home myself from scratch, it's easy, you can make it from scratch in less than 40 min. The only thing you need to buy pre-made if you want to save time is the little puff pastry, you can find this at any supermarket or bakery in Europe

I live near Bruges and it saddens me to say you litterally went to all the tourist traps... The outside restaurants at the market square, the waffles in the alley to the Burg (the little square where you sat). The only thing I would ever buy are the beignets (which are called oliebollen btw). Fun fact: a lot of the medieval looking houses in Ghent are not very old but were built quite recently to make the city look more medieval :D

    1. Why the attempts to pronounce the French names of the food? You are in a Flemish speaking region there.
    2. Origen of frites? Heavily debated indeed, but as historical research stands now most probably frites were brought to what is now Belgium from Paris.
