Salmon Fishing - The Boat Pool - Tulchan B Beat - River Spey Scotland

  • The Boat Pool is one of the most intriguing salmon pools I have fished. It is fascinating, yet at the same time frustrating and is undoubtedly one of my most anticipated casts on a trip to Tulchan’s B Beat here on the river Spey.
It doesn’t matter how many times I fish the pool; I always leave with a sense of achievement regardless if I have engaged with a salmon or not. It’s a tricky cast; a demanding pool to cover with the fly and it is never quite the same twice. The pace of the water, the colour, the height are all factors that will affect any pool but it’s something else; something that I can’t quite put my finger on.
Despite its proximity to the road on the south bank, the pool, for the most part, is surprisingly secluded. Particularly so up at the neck where the rush of the river from the Broom pool above collides immediately with slower deeper water. A large back eddy results for much of the fishable water high up in the neck. While this would seem frustrating for an angler with a fly line, it is in fact quite the opposite. Salmon will lie in the back eddy waiting for an opportunity to run the fast stream between the Boat and Broom pools. The salmon can be seen in clear water circling in its depths almost prowling in frustration. A fly cast with a relatively short yet weighted line from the rush of the neck, can swing tantalizingly into the eddy and perhaps pass the same fish more than once before it dies in the draw of the eddy.
A salmon’s route out of the Boat pool is not limited to the eddy. Although the pool is fishable only from the north bank, salmon can navigate the neck of the pool by running tight to the south bank. A good cast is needed to land a fly as close to the south bank as possible bypassing the eddy. As the fly swings over the drop-off, anglers would be well advised to hold on tight! A salmon-take on a long line in this situation is something that will remain in an angler’s memory for a lifetime.
As the pool flows out the neck the effect of the eddy dissipates and the pool relaxes into a slow wide glide. Salmon can be caught anywhere in the glide. Although I favor smaller flies in the neck of the pool I generally will fish larger doubles maybe a 6 or an 8 dressed double cast just short of square with a light tip to cut the surface of the water. I rarely fish large flies on the Spey and seldom will I reach for a tube fly. That being said this gliding stretch of water in my view is near perfect for a sunray shadow towards the end of the day as the light of the sun begins to fade.

Lovely release...this salmon will live to fight another day! (hopefully with someone as considerate as you...) Mike
