    Great video! Friendly tip I would recommend using a stiff putty knife to remove the wallpaper and not a flexible one because it will gouge the walls. Cheers!

    Even once the paper is off the glue is still on and is a nightmare.
    Some pros say it is cheaper to demo the sheetrock and install new. I agree

    01/23/2020: Great tips. But, can I also add fabric softener to the vinegar and water with no toxic fumes?

    Steamer does work better, working from top, down. It will come off in sheets most of the time. Much easier clean up too.

    So, what do you do for multiple paper layers or drywall instead of plaster? This only addressed the easiest of situations and only mentioned chemicals as plan 2 but not which chemicals for what situation.

    • @Guardducks
      @Guardducks 6 лет назад

      general4str User very hot water and score the paper with a knife , but carefully not to deep as to score your walls and allow the water to penetrate allow to soak and scrape and repeat the process . You can even use fabric softener or dish soap mixed with your water . Oh and lady down plastic this is a very messy process.

      If you’ve got multiple layers on top of drywall, your best bet is to just rip the whole wall out and re-Sheetrock it.
      By the time you buy the tools you need to get all the paper off and patch the drywall, you’ll save money by getting a few sheets of Sheetrock.

    Rent a wallpaper steamer, or if you have a clothing steamer use that. A lot easier comes off and sheets and less mess

    I use a 800 degree hot air blower ($20 harbor freight) and a 14 in 1 scraper.
    zero liquids, zero taping, zero prep time, zero steam machine, all natural...
    watch out that tip of the scraper can burn you though if your not carefull it took eight hours to do an entire guest bathroom properly and install new light fixture, re-caulk vanity... remove behind toilet...
    tough stuff folks, not for the uncommitted due to the patience required.

    good old dish soap in the water works best vinager is good for washing down old varnish and paint work prior to re coat the paper was a low quality vinyl and you need to remove it before soaking in the backing paper good quality vinyl will come off in one peace a larger pump sprayer with a wand and hose is better as you do not need to climb steps to use and wet the tops also a filling knife works better to get under the paper sometimes as they are sharper but not for punching off paper most decorators will snap a filling knife to make a scraper

    Step 1: Apply painter's tape to entire wall
    Step 2: Peel

  • @m.m.9180
    @m.m.9180 4 года назад

    I have a bedroom with peeling paint. I thought maybe the former owners painted over wallpaper since I'm seeing seams in the paint, but when I peel the paint off with a putty knife, I can't tell what's behind it. I'm not seeing wallpaper, just a brown paper bag color. I really wish I could just primer the loose parts and repaint. Is that possible? I don't know what I'm doing. It sucks.

    • @thellytholdtheathellth5278

      Sounds like wallpaper backing or it could be the lining from the drywall. If you can't remove it then give the wall a skim coat with plaster (wall mud) and sand down.

      Home improvement and DIY show on PBS that's been on since 1979. If you've ever seen the sitcom Home Improvement, this is what they were parodying (Tim Taylor's character is supposed to be original host Bob Vila and Al Borland is supposed to be the similarly dressed Norm Abrams).

    Would the process be the same for drywall?

    • @probablynot1368
      @probablynot1368 5 лет назад +1

      Much more difficult to remove from drywall. If the drywall was primed and painted before the wallpaper was installed, it won’t be as tough a job if it was installed directly to the drywall. You will still have areas where the drywall paper layer gets pulled away with the wallpaper as it is being removed. If that happens, you’ll have to seal the drywall (Roman Rx-35 PRO-999 Interior Drywall Repair and Sealer Primer) before you patch it, because if you don’t, the drywall patching compound will introduce moisture into the wall, potentially setting up a mold situation. If you’re dealing with the very sad situation of wallpaper installed directly onto unprimed or unsealed drywall, then maybe it’s best to remove the drywall altogether.

    Good solution for plaster walls... but for drywall it's much harder to take off. Just remove everything and start from 0. Once that drywall paper is off, it's hard to do a good patching job.

      TerraTN ....Yes, the seams would show through the paint. Also, the moisture contained in any primer and/or paint may very likely activate the paste of the underlying wallpaper, causing it to soften, ripple, and pull away from the wall at the seams.
