While most of the episodes are very cute and family friendly, some of the episodes are probably still haunting adults to this day who watched them as a kid. I'm sure someone will educate you more about this in the comments 😄
The moment when Sniff goes outside and sees nothing wrong in the cold darkness and then camera turns to show who is behind Sniff. That part is still giving me creeps.
I didn't read all the comments to see if someone has already mentioned this, but the Moomin comics were actually originally published in English in the UK before they were published in Finnish or Swedish. When I learned this it made me happy as I personally love to read and watch works in their original language and this makes it possible for any English speaker to enjoy the original works. The moomins in the comics are pretty different from the ones in the TV show though, maybe because the show is mostly aimed at children so it's more cute and cuddly while the comics have some more adult fitting themes as well. (For example, at some point muumin pappa starts to cook his own alcohol in the comics). I haven't red all of the comics, but I have watched the whole series multiple times. I used to love it as a kid and apparently I once told my mom that I will never get tired of watching moomins (I still haven't, though I don't watch them often anymore haha)
You should definitely read the novels if you like moomin! The books are a lot more grown up than the series, so they are an enjoyable read for adults as well! :)
This first episode, like a few later episodes (episodes 1-8), is based on ''Finn Family Moomintroll'', the third Moomin book published by Jansson. It was also the first Moomin book to be published in English translation.
Yes, the books aren't geared to exclusively children and it has many themes that adults relate better. They're really deep and handle topics like mental health, alienation, compassion, acceptance and embracing of difference in people.
Unfortunately I don't think the show is available with subs, but I always feel that a part is lost in translation without the Swedish or Finnish versions. Like Moomin is supposed to be at more of a coming-of-age-age than a child (the English voice is very high), and Snorkmaiden comes off as quite boring and sweet rather than the temperamental diva she is. Her Finnish VA is the best at this. Either way Moomin is a great way to better understand Finnish, and especially Finn-Swedish, culture and philosophy. The series is very much about coping with emotions in a safe way. Even those like sadness, anger and fear which are often considered negative are allowed to exist. And yes, as an adult I'm still traumatized by the flesh-eating pants and the hattifatteners! I'm sure this is why I have a phobia for slugs and worms.
It's interesting because the Moomin brand is definitely bigger than the books or the series. I've grown up with the series and it is nostalgic to me, but haven't done anything Moomin related in like 10-15 years (read books/watched series). But despite that, I still own Moomin mugs (like every Finn? :D) and probably some other Moomin products. Now that I watched this I got some Japanese vibes from this o.o And I do agree that the Finnish audio is better than English dub :D But it might also be because I'm used to the Finnish audio + it might be a bit hard to watch it in Finnish without knowing too much Finnish. Well maybe with subtitles
The best kid show ever. And the only one, that I can still watch, even if I am an adult from a long time. Characters, manyy fantastic episodes, music, atmosphere, so many great aspects. Btw. There is no other show, that shows winter in such an atmospheric way..
Omg I’m here before Gandalf the Gay!!! I hope you love this series as much as I do, I’m an American that stumbled across the moomins about 5 years ago, and I’ve been a huge fan ever since! It’s really a lovely franchise 💚
As a finn who grew up on the moomins, i would like to say that moomin was the cause of the top 3 of my childhood traumas and when moomin (the boy) was turned into THAT was one of them
I remember these old Finnish Moomin series: Muumilaakso 1973 - Jakso 1 - Yksinäinen Muumipeikko ruclips.net/video/2R7HnKzUdJg/видео.html Today I found this weird Japanese Moomin thing: 【Moomin 1969】02 - Aim for the Devil's Heart 【Japanese】 ruclips.net/video/svVpIMVjYnQ/видео.html
Two things about Moomins trasformation: Moomin became a tarsier. It is a real animal. Other thing is that although this is just a theory i heard, which i belive, so it is therized that we viewers hear Moomin's voice, but these characters (apart Moomin) hear some other voice.I confirmed the theory myself by saying that when Moomin laughs while hidden, Snufkin asks in the Finnish version "Did anyone laugh recently?" and Sniff says "Who?" They should know what Moomin's laugh sounds like.
@@olive9097 At first I had a hard time believing this, but it's true: despite her small size, Little My is actually older than Snufkin. I actually read a little more about the character and found out that her name actually refers to the Greek letter "μ" meaning "micron", which represents one millionth, or 10−6. Seemingly Jansson wanted to create a name for the character that would refer to as the smallest existing thing as possible.
Oh no! the english dubbing sounds so horrible compared to the finnish audio 😱I recommend watching it with the finnish audio if you can find subtitles. The voice actors in the finnish version is what made moomins so special (at least for me)
I was coming to tell the same 😅 I was so traumatized I didn't even remember correctly how Momin looked when he turned into the gremling - prob couldn't watch till the end. And the magician was so scary 🫣 But I remember it was a huge thing when the series first aired in Finland, the kids were so hyped. 🤩
Moomin is an educational children's series, but adults enjoy it too. They deal with topics from real life, sometimes even difficult ones. The characters are different with their own very humame flaws. They will be themselves, despite their personalities might get them into trouble sometime.
Luv your reaction. these moomin series was japananese made series , though they made best and still best anime in the world...Strips had allso had some critisims of politics etc..
Those moomin-mugs are so common that nearly all families have few, we do. A good size cor finnish coffee. Some collects those too, but there is a collector for everything. Hilarious stuff was that here was in youtube a aussie guy whou could not drink coffee of mug where is moomin caracter, so they tossed those away. He lost his manhood witha a moomin mug ;-) These cartoons and books, the oldest were quite different, you could manage that, these newer animations came from japan, but those are still ok in my opinion, but there is people saying those were already spoiled.
Before I watch your reaction to this, I like the video idea (obviously because of my own bias). Never seen anyone reacting to moomin (tv show) before. I hope you get something out of it :).
Moomins change a lot during time. Currently they are very familyfriendly and not much sadness. First ones, original ones, are rather - how I say - pessimistic. I think Toves life reflects heavily to them during Toves live.
If you make more of this, be careful with the footage you use in your reaction videos, lest you suffer as Blight Vondrake has. Many videos in his excellent Moomin reaction series have been retroactively claimed, seriously wearing him out.

@@Omili Ah, you mean episode 6, "Tiny Guests". The Groke always gives me shivers.
The ghost ship and the ice queen have also given many people the creeps
That"mörkö" Monster etc boogie. When all grounds frozed when that "thing" walken towards house where moomis lived....
To me it is this exact episode that gave me nightmares. 😂
It's probably the most wholesome show I've ever watched.

did any of the voice actors do voices for both Swedish and Finnish?
some of the Finnish voices sometimes seem to sound unexpectedly as expected.
@@smievil No, but I know what you mean. 😂
Feel the immediate need for merch. I'm less than 2 weeks into this fandom and already want a Snufkin tattoo.
YESSS that's amazing. Snufkin is awesome. I support

Probably you got Japanese vibes because this series was made in Japan and is Japanese anime. Atleast the animation and music is Japanese
100%. The English dub outright get some of the characters wrong IMO. And the Finnish dub has Snorkmaiden's VA. She's amazing 😂
Snufkin ist best :D I even got a tattoo of him in my arm :)
6:16 Lovely to Find a Fellow Pooh Fan!

Welcome to the Moomin fandom. We all love Snufkin here 🥲
There is also a Movie that serves as a prequel to this series, though it does not have an english Dub.
Love this Moomin journey for you

Snufkin and Little My are actually some kind of siblings. Same father maybe? So no, they should not be dating!
Same mother! Little my is snufkins older half-sister

Subtle horror tends to pop up in a lot of Moomin.
Moomins are big in Japan too, there's even Moomins theme park in Japan, in the city of Hanno
i've met multiple Finnish men named Hannu, need to bring them to Hanno

Oooh okay duly noted!! I’ll have to do that moving forward. Maybe a sequel with finnish audio is in the future… thanks for the recommendation! 💓
@@kayleecreates yup, you do that :D !!! this is so scuffed and cursed with the english dub
Agree, Muumi must be experienced in Finnish. I've seen these English dubbed and they are not good.
Ok tbh I think the English dub has its own charm though, something about the delivery of the lines makes it so funny
That episode traumatized me as a child. I felt so bad for Moomin when no one believed him. 😭 But I have to say, that dub is horrendous. 😅

There is something dark in Snufkin's past. We don't know what it is.
I think it’s just the fact that he was abandoned tbh

Snufkin is very cool
Hello there
If you make more of this, be careful with the footage you use in your reaction videos, lest you suffer as Blight Vondrake has. Many videos in his excellent Moomin reaction series have been retroactively claimed, seriously wearing him out.
Tell you what, that grofkin/nuuskamuikkunen figurine.. lego is nothing compared to that f*#ker when stepping on him in the dark..
The originals by Tove Jansson was made for adults, not children. These new cute movie versions are more for children.
I would consider at least the first four books children's books.
5:14 X"D I died. Not even one episode in and she already knows Snufkin is Moomin's true love, not Snorkmaiden. X"D "THINKS she's his girlfriend." X"D
You should read original moomin books.
Waaay better than the childish cute TV show.
Moomins are pretty serious characters unlike in the TV show.
At least the first four books were made for children and there's nothing wrong with that.
America is a continent not a country.
