    I only bought the extension part to add to my MFT/3 table. I need more support for long pieces to the right side of the cut. With much fiddling, I finally got the holes aligned. Works great for cutting the long sheet goods down to the appropriate size.

    I have the larger table it was a bit pricey but totally changed the way i work as i can set my workshop up anywhere . Those table accessory kits are quite expensive but i managed to build one up and buy a systainer and the insert . love the festool kit such quality . Great video as always !

      david garner thanks for the comments. In retrospect maybe I should have just bought those slim black table top clamps! Festool is great but once I accepted and justified to myself the high price of it all I occasionally spend excitedly on things I later realise I didn’t need that bad! It goes both ways though - other things that I bought with trepidation I now couldn’t live without!

    as long as there are plenty of dining tables, kitchen counters, even beds nearby, you should be in good shape to get things done. Or, you can always spend a fortune and get three of these and spread them out. at least then you could bring all the systainers you really need, instead of deciding which two or three get to go in the rack. They are nice in any case.

      @Alastair_Freebird  2 года назад

      @@kalimbobo I can’t remember what I already said in this video but I started to find the aluminium edge profile irritating as it makes handsawing or jigsawing a piece overhanging the end of the bench more difficult. I also find the whole cart assembly to heavy and awkward to easily get into the sort of houses I typically work in. Key parts of the design are too fragile and easily broken. The hole pattern between small top and extension table doesn’t line up.

    With regards to the festool quick clamps, I saw a RUclips video (where else!) showing that someone had added elastic bands that didn't hinder the movement, but it meant it became a one-handed clamp! If I can find a link I'll send it your way 👍

    Four bench dogs, two in the long table, two in the small table top, line up the two units with a track and lock together. You bench hole fully line up.
    If you want extra holes, Peter Parfett has a system for drilling extra holes or making your own top. Axminster Tools

      @Alastair_Freebird  5 лет назад

      Harvey Smith thanks. I was kind of waiting for someone to say that! I know it could be lined up but I feel it should be built into the design. Once the two tops are engaged there is friction that makes it easier said than done.

  • @cpwright82

    I also find myself using the clamping elements from the MFT-FX set on an MFT most of all. One thing that I noticed while using the extension table connected to my MFT is that the clamping elements can actually push the extension away from the MFT if you are spanning the MFT and the extension. I expect the same thing could happen with the extension table and the MW1000 cart.

      @@Alastair_Freebird it was designed to be installed at the back as you stated. Where the handle resides. You notice all the holes will magically align. If you measure the width of the extension table, it will be the same as the width of the handle side. I learned this from where I bought it at a shop. They had it displayed this was, and confirmed on Festools siite with a video.

    Good review. Could there be any chance you could swap out those tops on the bench and put your own on with bigger tops and own design grid system? Oh, and make them out of ply...not MDF. :) What you reckon?

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  5 лет назад +1

      Reuben's woodcraft yes definitely . I have a cnc manufacturer we use so I could design them how I want. The festool ones are 20mm so that slightly complicated matters if matching up a new one to an old one.

    • @ReubenswoodcraftCoUk
      @ReubenswoodcraftCoUk 5 лет назад +1

      @@Alastair_Freebird I'm assuming 20mm thickness? If so, does it have to be the same thickness? can you not have it slightly thicker? I wouldn't recommend going thinner - but thicker could have a benefit perhaps??? or am I misunderstanding something again? lol

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  5 лет назад +1

      Reuben's woodcraft yes that’s right 20mm think I think. I’d probably replace them with 18mm rather than 22 for weight. Birch ply wouldn’t be a bad idea. However MDF has some advantages for smoothness and lack of splinters as it starts getting cut into.

    • @ReubenswoodcraftCoUk
      @ReubenswoodcraftCoUk 5 лет назад +1

      @@Alastair_Freebird I'm pretty sure there is a way of getting round the problem of rough cut ply edges....I suggested ply simply because I watched a video where someone in Durham had made one of these Ron Paulk benches and he used MDF for the tops, like in the plan, The trouble is He found and I think I can only agree, that for in this country where the moisture content can be very high in some seasons, he found that the holes in the MDF would grip his bench dogs or hole pillars so tightly that he would have great trouble getting them out again. And the thing is these holes need to be snug. He said it was fine when he first started with it till during the first winter it became a problem ....this can only suggest to me that the inside edges of the holes were and probably can not be sealed or are sealed but has come off from the constant pushing and pulling of the pillars. Thus moisture has attacked it and made the mdf expand and shrink the holes. An alternative has just come to mind. One could make the holes a slightly larger diameter and set in plastic pipe bushings (glued in) that were the same inner dia as the pillars used...? But then we have the question...could you be really bothered with that? :)

    • @Alastair_Freebird
      @Alastair_Freebird  2 года назад +1

      I wouldn’t even bother getting one then, I think it’s a waste of money to pay for all the fancy aluminium edge profiles etc then just cover it with a board . I don’t mean this in a bad way - I think what you’re saying makes sense but I’d suggest just putting it on light plastic trestles or a bora centipede or something

    Best review I have seen on this. I have one and find the same problems. Stop using on site as was more hassle than worth. Especially in UK as mentioned it does not fit through a lot of doors. Try loading that beast with systainers and take up stairs. You only try it once😂.did put a mini systainer as first aid kit in bottom. For the money I wish had got mft3 instead. But now am looking at Ron paulk table instead as has more practical uses on site for me I think but as we all know everything works great in theory. Keep up the great work.
