    From what I have learned thus far with soldering gold filled wire, you need to use boric acid and denatured alcohol to coat the piece before soldering. You quickly heat it up so that the mixture dries and then apply a fluxed piece of gold solder to the joint. That will prevent firescale. You only heat the joint where you want the solder to flow. Additionally, you need to use clean pickle that is only used for gold filled. The plating you experienced was probably from using the same pickle that you use for your silver. I really appreciate you sharing how easy making this ring was and look forward to seeing future videos. I love the idea of using the pre-made blank for the back plate.

    I've been working with gold filled for a while, a couple of comments. The gold filled bead-wire is pretty fragile. Rio recommends using it for non-stressed decorative uses only. I tried some stacker rings and they break pretty easily if stressed. The other comment is, the bezel Rio sells is gold on one side only and it's very difficult to tell which side. So you have to be careful to get the gold side on the outside.

      Thank you for your insight. The beaded wire is fragile, I’ve learned the hard way! I currently wear two stacking bands and they’ve held up thus far. I was unaware that Rios gold filled bezel wire was single clad. Thanks for that info. The necklace I’ve made have kept there color so far.

    A charcoal block might help prevent the metal from overheating, that's what I prefer to use.

    Thank you for producing this video. I work a lot with silver-filled metal and often wondered if it could be soldered. Now that I know that gold-filled metal can be soldered, I've got my answer! ;-)
    Nicely done video, by the way. Clear, concise, step-by-step instructions, thoughtfully edited and filmed in focus. What more could a person ask?

    That disc that you got has exposed brass on the sides. It was cut with a disc cutter. It doesn't usually pose any problems.. but you definitely cannot sand gold filled. At all. It exposes brass and you won't know it till later when it tarnishes.

      Hi, it’s been a year since you commented but what would you suggest polishing the gold filled bezel with considering you cannot sand it?

    • @danaelizabeth3747
      @danaelizabeth3747 2 года назад +1

      @@abbytruelsen7280 You can only lightly polish gold filled, anything really abrasive will remove gold and expose the brass. Its just the nature of it. :/

      Then what I would like to know is how do you clean up the solder join on the bezel itself. It’s not addressed in the video but I have never made a bezel that didn’t need some sanding of the solder join.

      Plating and gold filled are two different things. Gold filled has a layer of gold bonded to a brass or copper core metal. I do not make my own so I don’t know to make it.

      I've tried it with yellow silver solder instead of gold. I think if you use little solder you wouldn't have a whole lot to clean up.@@dawnchastain2030
