In that clip he was 52 - turned 53 early January. He always had his stuff that high back in the day. Also, when he recorded Nevermind, he held his sticks backwards. He was apparently brutal on sticks and drum heads. And, yes, that kit needed a safe word.
Dave is an absolute legend, and you can tell that this track is very special to him in the way he performs and put his all into it. On a side note, imagine owing Dave money, if that's how he treats his drum kit!
During the recording of Nevermind they had trouble keeping Dave's cymbals under control. The mastering engineer who did this record was Andy Wallace. He ended up taking the room mic's completely out of the mix and adding room ambience instead. Butch Vig who recorded and mixed the record has said Dave was a dream to work with because of his consistently and ability to do some songs in a single take. Kurt described him as having "perfect metronome timing". But it's amazing he can still play like that after all these years. You have to consider also that he is playing along to a studio recording which is made perfect by any means necessary in the studio and he didn't miss a beat.
Although I agree that Dave hits with a lot of power, the only one that I think may give him a run for his money is Morgan Rose. Dave does hit very consistently with a lot of power though. You definitely have a valid point.
@@JasonSayersDrums Like Eating Glass or Banquet, or Helicopter, I suppose. I always thought he had an interesting sound. Kind of choppy but distinctive
Also, you should react to this. The previous drummer i mentioned named Dale Crover of the Melvins with Cody Willis (Of Big Business) playing the mother of all drum videos. ruclips.net/video/A9XEWYPu_wg/видео.html - this is a must watch.
The drums that changed the world. Seriously. Those drums blew the music world's mind away.
Head banging, hair flying around, eyes closed, hitting with such energy each hit….you can tell that in his mind he was back in 1991-92 with Nirvana.

The whole thing is amazing, but when we go into the last chorus of "a denial," chills every time.
Speaking of Dave Grohl, you should react to the Foo Fighters’ Everlong with Nandi Bushell on drums live.
Thanks for the shout out chief ;) x
Absolute beast. Best drummer on the planet.
Is he a drummer? Dude...it's THE drummer!
I never seen a drummer who hits with such force........fucking hell
Grohl is a beast, but check out Travis Barker and Tool's drummer Danny Carey, both are so good as well.

How to write hooks as a drummer.... absolute genius
Hey Jason, be great for you to check out Jeff Sipe with Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg in the band HLS
Dam he's good
Have you ever done Matt Tong from Bloc Party?
I haven’t checked him out yet, any tracks you’d recommend?
