All Roads Lead To Rome part 1 of 2

  • Irish International Trucking 70s style.
This is a very rare film following a driver in his Mercedes LP with a refrigerated trailer going from Wexford Ireland to Rome around 1974. The truck driven is like the photo on display, but this truck does not appear in the film. This film is in black and white and quality is good.
The trip follows the driver through London and on the old road via Canterbury to Dover, no motorways in those days, and onto Rome. Things haven't changed much with the job, just the roads and the trucks....the drivers still say the same things about the job!! A nice film to watch for the nostalgia.

The factory in Waterford he collected the sides of beef was Clover meats. It was a huge firm in its day. It was owned by the O' Meara family from Limerick who were huge exporters of both beef, pork and bacon.

Thanks for the posting .. brings back waves of nostalgia.. from 1970 to 1979 I drove trucks delivering antiques all across Italy to shops and private collectors .. did a trip average every three weeks .. loved it .. young man seeing all the wonderful Italian culture and mostly the amazing food .. lived like a prince .. 20 to 30 deliveries each trip from Turin to Sicily .. no sat nav then .. paper maps and your own grey matter .. no worries .. it’s how it was .. always Rome for customs clearance so that meant a couple of nights in the Porta Maggiore hotel with your truck in the customs compound while the antiquities experts perused your load .. great days and nights .. Europe Express .. Anglo Italian Express .. Keith Mallin Transport ..the early incarnation of Martinspeed with Jill and Reece .. and to smooth the way always a tea chest of silver plate teasets for the customs and 400 ciggies for the traffic cops 😂

40+ years since this was aired, 20+ years since I started on the continent & I thought jayz not much has changed (apart from the physical roads - I can't imagine having to drive through Piccadilly Circus!) you still have the sweet talkin for the customs - where there is customs- truckstops, foreign food, feeling like an alien, monotony etc.

The trucks, the clothes, the hairstyles, the social behaviour, the coal and iron mills still visibly operating (smoke stacks) in Wales before the mines were shut down and the local economy crashed... everything in this video bespeaks the '70s, nothing like the '90s.
Obviously the footage is "digitized" (to use a very 1980's / 1990's term) or it wouldn't be on RUclips!
