Irish International Trucking 70s style. This is a very rare film following a driver in his Mercedes LP with a refrigerated trailer going from Wexford Ireland to Rome around 1974. The truck driven is like the photo on display, but this truck does not appear in the film. This film is in black and white and quality is good. The trip follows the driver through London and on the old road via Canterb...

The factory in Waterford he collected the sides of beef was Clover meats. It was a huge firm in its day. It was owned by the O' Meara family from Limerick who were huge exporters of both beef, pork and bacon.
Tax is 1400 per year ....If we weigh it in properly...Love it 😂
i started on that run mid 80s used to get 15 pounds for clean permit and 10 pounds each way over Cenis
A tenner for taking your life in your hands. Fuck that!
I’m just watching this now as it came up on my RUclips feed - some comments are saying Stoney Burke passed away, I’m sorry to hear that, he looked like a sound man RIP
Patrick Burke also known as stoney, my grandfather, love to see it!!
My late dad did the continent in late 70s early 80s for carna. I went to Holland with him once. He got the first scania 142 carna got in 81. First in Ireland
How many Trucks did Carna have then
what a cracking 2 videos , myslef a lorry driver for 27yrs 20 off them away from home, everything said in that video still goes today !! Bravo...👍👍
Brilliant, thanks for posting.
My dad drove part time for local company.he gave up full time when me and my siblings came along.anyway, drove a DAF 3300,had to take a stool to sit in as drivers removed passenger seat for more room.
where did they sleep?
In the cab or at rest-stop motels/hotel type places. Nowadays the trucks are like palaces.
Really good film. Great writing and I loved the soundtrack. Maybe I'm dreaming but it seem like a great job for a summer or two.
Where is Howard now?
When was it filmed
Wasn’t the healthiest of professions then was it
Love these old films ❤
Have a glass or 2 of wine for the road haha
Brill❤
Broadcasted on RTE on 27/09/1973
I done that run for years, the davis turner drivers were the Yellow Packs of the industry, driving better trucks then us, but paid in peanuts. I worked for Lebratrans Roy & Fred and was earning 3 times that. Happy days !!!
7:00 What would he have done to deal with an old David Brown gearbox? The synchromesh ZF-gearbox was a pleasure to use, gear changes went so smoothly uphill and downhill. 16:51 German soldiers have never been marauding!
Thought he was trying to stir a pot of soup!😂

Any body know this fellow. His he still doing abit or has he retired.
"There's a truck out on the four-lane A mile or more away The winding of his wheels Just makes it colder. Hey it's good to be back home again..."
4:45 Yep, you either like doing this or you don’t do it.
I think i could watch a 2 hour film with the Spanish Gypsy.
Yes,bet he could tell some tales! Safe to say he’s sadly no longer with us I bet however would love to have heard some of his tales of life on the road!
OMG. I drove for 30 years for a living, not tricks, and you lot make it sound so terrible. I bet a load of you actually made good money and had a great time. Of course you did nothing wrong it was always the other drivers and government agencies. Bit besides all that I enjoyed these two videos.
A bit of a cynical commentator.
Yeah that was Paddy Gallagher, he wasn't very respectful of the drivers either. He was a notorious bollucks.
Never again am i leaving a long winded comment to a vid for it only to be deleted.
Sorry fella did you leave a comment for me?
I wonder if Stoney is still with us?
He is .. 😊😊
He died 12 years ago unfortunately, I'm his grandson ❤
God be with the days of double clutching and bliping on the down shifts
Lovely video I remember euro haul back in the eighties look at the height differences of the cabs, nowadays,
Cabs and more!....... now there are single axle trucks delivering minerals to shops with 230hp lumps.... Stoney needed to walk the gear stick around the cab to get them all. 😂
Old skool
Nuts
Thank you stoney . This is how we learn.
Dragging it
How long did you measure gallons of fuel on the island? Imperial gallon 4.5 liters?
18:05 say he, "abi" big man brother is turkish.
Micky's tshirts 😂😂
What does TIR mean?
TIR stands for "Transports Internationaux Routiers" or "International Road Transports".)
Thanks for the ride driver
Anyone know old pals of mine paddy pops Byrne from Co meath or Tony plummer ex shanahans from Dublin? John Anderson?
@Seamus Burke John is a taxi driver based up at the square in Tallaght.. Absolute gentleman he is.. I worked with him at Sydney Coopers in Dublin back in the day.. Some great lads worked there.. 👍🏾😊😊
Me father was with shanahans for years..jack devine
6:15 better than Hollywood eh
220bhp pulling 40 ton Jesus bet that was slow going
I thought I was hard done by driving an F7 artic pulling 34 tonne of coal from the Durham coalfield to ferrybridge and drax on a daily basis 16 speed box and 16 gear changes per minute how time’s have changed
Did you hear that fuel consumption the narrator mentions? 1 gallon per 6.5 miles, that's around 45l per 100km.
Stony burke died i think bout 10 years ago new him well
Joan Mc Crann, I’m happy to say my dad is alive and well.
@@paulburke6347 that’s good to hear, looks a real character
Stoney died 12 years ago yes, that's my grandfather there ❤
How times have changed, now direct ferry services from Ireland to Europe and the new Dublin - Continental European ports of Zeebrugge and Rotterdam using mega ferries. Not forgetting the existing Irish routes to Northern France. These routes will by pass Brexit Britain and its pre EU paperwork
I remember driving though shitty puss boxes. I Want to drive America.. Best trucks.. My grand. Ask me y no . Y.. I Ask him. How Many funinarals.. Interesting... Get on.. Xxoo.
7:00 The right gear is in there somewhere
...Just keep grinding that motherfluffer until you get it! And now I know why so many 2nd hand vehicles are piles of shit.
Alan is there anywhere we can obtain this footage? Our company directors father is the refrigeration engineer in the video and we would really like to get this video. Kind Regards
1974?? The footage looks digitized. You sure it's not from like 1991 or so???
Truck is from 74 ish.. Motorways in Kent by the 90's
I think trucks were much better in 1991 than the ones in this video
The trucks, the clothes, the hairstyles, the social behaviour, the coal and iron mills still visibly operating (smoke stacks) in Wales before the mines were shut down and the local economy crashed... everything in this video bespeaks the '70s, nothing like the '90s. Obviously the footage is "digitized" (to use a very 1980's / 1990's term) or it wouldn't be on RUclips!
It was actually aired in September 1973, I remember it well.
Fourty Ton To be Shure
Does anyone know of Stoney Burkes where abouts now?
Stoney died some years ago.
@@seamusburke9101 No, not true ..
@@damienhill6383 you sure about that. I must've went to the wrong funeral.
Paddy or Patrick Burke also known as stoney died 12 years ago unfortunately, that's my grandfather there! Great to look back and see this
