Before this movie, very few people ever heard the name Ken Miles. I knew him because I grew up in the pits at Riverside Raceway and my dad was good friend to Ken (mainly because the both fought in WWII together for Great Britain... Ken in tanks and my dad a fighter pilot in the RCAF) and shared the same pit area with Ritchie Ginther (another legendary name in racing but known by very few outside the track), Dan Gurney and James Garner (the actor). We were there at Riverside when Ken passed in the crash in one of the Mk. IV prototypes. Another reason that my dad was friends with Ken and Dan was because they were all design engineers and my dad was a test pilot at Edward's AFB (who also flew the Lockheed A-12 Oxcart for OBS- Other Branch of Service). My dad took Ken's death very hard and quit racing shortly after his death... he didn't have the heart to tell me for almost 10 years later (when I started C production SCCA racing in my 1972 Datsun 240Z). I learned how to drive from Bob Bondurant... rest in peace!
My favorite memories of Ken was when he took me for hot laps around Riverside in all of the Ford GT prototypes... including the J-car prototype that he was killed in (except the roadster). Christian Bale's performance as Ken was truly amazing... I had flashbacks of talking to him as a kid.

I became a fan of Ken Miles when I was only 13. I saw him race the Cobra roaster #98 at Bridgehampton N.Y. I wrote letters to him, asking about the Cobra and he answered them and sent me pictures of the new Cobra Daytona Coupe. I continued following his career and he sent me a Photo of the Ford GT. He went on to win the following year 1965 Daytona 24hr. Sebring 12hr. Almost won Le Mans that year, teamed up with Lloyd Ruby of indy car fame. They were a great team, I don't remember why they weren't teamed up the following year for the Le Mans which Ken Miles was robbed of 1st place.

If you're looking for a villain, you might want to try the ACO (Automobile Club de l'Ouest) - the people who run the LeMans race. They originally told Ford that a dead heat would be an acceptable finish. Instructions were given to the drivers based on that assurance from the ACO. Sometime later, the ACO came back and changed their original determination. There were no radios between the driver and crew in those days, and the decision was made, that short of calling the cars into the pits, trying to communicate through the pit board system would only cause confusion with the drivers. So, the original directions to the drivers, based on ACO assurances of a tie being acceptable were allowed to stand by Carroll Shelby as they had to win the race.

I too had never heard of Ken Miles until today even though I was familiar with this race. What an incredible guy and what an incredible day in history. It was sweet and bitter, full of aggravation and celebration. The pressure and the stakes and drama were sky high. The end result was the culmination of so much hard work by so many, many whose names have been lost. Big congrats to all the engineers, mechanics and drivers who pulled this off in about three years of pushing. That's not a lot of time to win against the legendary Ferrari teams who had been eating and breathing this sport for decades. It goes to show that with bails of money, brute force, and teams of dedicated professionals, one could conquer the world. Conversely I see Ferrari's side; a very small company that always punched above its weight and somehow felt that they'd been had. Then again, it's good to see they got the stuffing beat out of them a few times by some Americans too.

Something to note: The GT40s that won LeMans on 66 and 67 were Ford works teams, but Ford withdrew from LeMans afterwards. However a handful of teams were still racing them in 68 and 69, and one of them carried the torch of the Ford works’ winning streak.
The GT40 that won the 68 and 69 LeMans was privately owned by John Wyer, the original guy that Ford contacted to create the GT40, but fired when it was unsuccessful at 64. Ironically, that gulf liveried Mk I is perhaps the most famous GT40 to date, and as far as I know the only car that ever won Le Mans twice. (The 69 winner that won Le Mans was the exact same car as the one that won in 68 with a different racing number)

Yes, John Wyer was the Team Manager for the Ford GT40 team its first year in 1964. Under his stewardship, the GT40s never finished a race, let alone won one. So Ford took the GT40s away from Wyer and put them in the hands of the Shelby team. Shelby won the 1st time out and that was at Daytona in '65. Apparently Wyer and his crew learned a hell of a lot between the end of the 1964 season and the beginning of the 1967 season when his team built their "Mirage" race cars, including Chassis 1075, which after racing in 67 as a Mirage, for 1968 was converted to standard GT40 bodywork and went on to win Le Mans in 68 and 69.

    • @devandrasimanjuntak1646

Frank Pienkosky nah, after 1967, there was a limit on engine discplacement to 5.0L for the prototypes. The Ford factory team decided to leave and not participate in future LM races. The 68 and 69 GT40 Mk I was technically a privateer. Said privateer (John Wyer) was one of the original fathers of the GT40, but he is still a privateer nonetheless.
Ferrai widthrew from Le Mans because they wanted to focus on F1. It was around the same tome where Niki Lauda said that their F1 car was rubbish while testing. He suggested that if Ferrari were to be successful at F1, they would have to focus their funding to F1 and not their sports car (group 5 prototype/Le Mans) programme. Ferrari agreed with the condition that if Lauda didn’t win the next race, they would fire him. Lauda won the next race, and Ferrari propmptly abandon their sports car programme. They hadn’t returned to Le Mans ever since. I forgot exactly which year but by 1975 I believe they have left completely.

    • @devandrasimanjuntak1646
      @devandrasimanjuntak1646 4 года назад

Frank Pienkosky they out those chicanes on Le Mans way forward in 1990, after a Peugeot broke the all time speed record for Le Mans, 407 km/h. That car was specifically designed to go fast round the Mulsanne straight, because it was slow everywehre else and would last only a couple laps before the engine starts overheating. But it did it’s job.
The strange thing is, contrary to pupular belief, most of the accidents that happened in Le Mans were on other sections of the track. The Mulsanne straight almost never saw controversy despite the cars going at 360 km/h for Group 5 and 6 prototypes as well as 380-390 km/h in the Group C era. FIA was just scared because now that someone had broken the 400 km/h barrier, everyone would start to race to that speed. So to stop that from happening, they added the chicanes. In retrospect, it might have been a wise decision, but up to that point, there was very minimal accidents in the Mulsanne straight itself.

Didn’t happen. Dan Gurney in the 3rd GT40 set the track record early in the race. Finally, watch the 13-14min mark of this video. Amons says their car was in the lead but they slowed to 30secs off the pace per orders from Bebbe/Ford. The Miles car did not slow down and in 7 laps caught the McLaren car and took the lead. No wonder McLaren goosed the throttle at the finish line. He thought they had deserved the race. We may never know. But I certainly would not take a side with a Hollywood version.

It lists all the results for LeMans over all the years, and in fact mentions that Ford Motor had just funded a rebuild of the corner before the pits. This helped slow down cars and make pit entry safer (1968). The winner of the 1966 race is the Chris Amon car. The photo, one of only 20 or so in the whole book, is the (#1) Ken Miles car. @Flame Resistant Troll Red Bull F1 pilot Max Verstappen, one of the most renowned drivers on the pinnacle category's grid, has been confirmed as a starter for this week's round of the virtual BP V8 Supercars All Stars E-series.
The eight-time Grand Prix winner will race in a Red Bull Holden Racing Team ZB Commodore wildcard entry, as the field takes on Silverstone in the UK and Catalunya in Spain. I’ve tried the Supercar now a few times on iRacing and it’s a very tricky car to get right. I met Ken at Sebring in '65, I think, he wad sitting in his Cobra. My dad had been going there since 1956, and I was only 12 at the time. But since I had been going since I was 5, I kinda knew who all the guys were. Still have the picture I took with my Brownie Kodak of him at Sebring. The movie was great for people who have no idea how things were back then, yet having been going to all of these race ever since, well I guess ya had to be there. Dayton had a cafeteria in the paddocks, and if ya knew your way around you could go in there at 2 in the morning, and sit right next to these guys. Sitting next to Pedro Rodriguez and Graham Hill when the #2 917 Porsches were wearing the orange and blue colors was a dream come true for a 14 year old kid! This movie really does bring back great memories of When Giants Raced! The 917 Porsches were absolutely amazing!

@Flame Resistant Troll Hi bro, just want to let you know, yours are the only truly researched comments I've seen here, great stuff!
I have a question to add to your list for these so called experts. Amon and McLaren drove an open top version of the car with an auto transmission for thousands of laps as part of the testing programme. 2 questions. 1. What nickname did the the team give the car and why? 2. It was raced only once , where?
Like you I've been struggling with the apparent ignorance of some of the comments regarding the drivers and their relative abilities.Lets be frank here,3 of the 4 drivers were seasoned Grand Prix pilots and the 4th was a very talented driver who SHOULD have gone further in his career ,but didn't because (I believe) he lacked the diplomacy (yes, the suck up factor!), and it was his inability to attract the "money" that saw him driving mostly at a regional level.
His lifeline was Carol Shelby and lets be honest,he needed to grab this lifeline with both hands,it was probably his only chance to drive at this level ,at his age he probably wasn't going to get another chance like this.
He ran with the opportunity and did an amazing job in developing the chassis, but this leads to a part of the film that really grinds my wheels...I'm talking about the scene where we see the car for the first time, just off the aircraft. To me they are presenting it as a "new" car, suggesting "undeveloped" which is a bunch of bullshit! John Wyer's team had drivers like McLaren,Gurney,Amon testing and trying to race these cars for 2 years before Miles/Shelby got involved in the project. The lack of success in this period was due to mechanical unreliability, not chassis performance , so what they did give Shelby was a partially developed chassis that had already shown it's potential and had much more to give.
Credit Miles for finding that "much more",but to suggest that he deserves the sympathy vote vis a vis the result because he worked so hard to develop the car is disingeuous to say the least, much, much more went into the development of the programme than just Gene's contrbution.
As to the result itself,I had the privilege of meeting Chris Amon in 2014 and although the only thing I asked was for an autograph (on my copy of Grand Prix Legends!) a guy just ahead of me in the queue asked about the result and Amon said "We we're leading.Bruce did as he was told, others didnt".....
I didn't hear the rest but it was obvious that he was still affected by the controversy surrounding this race and that is a pity....
Anyway just want to add my 2c worth on the subject and to suggest that all motorsport lovers know how to research these things and that you sir are preaching to the terminally ignorant!
Oh, and one more thing - Gene Miles, unlucky? Give me a break ,if you want to know about bad luck, read Amons story.Mario Andretti said that if Amon took up undertaking, people would stop dying!
      CHEERS.
Edit: Confusing Gene Miles (footballer) with Ken ,sorry.

@Flame Resistant Troll Cool story,I remember vaguely something mentioned about it in Eion Young's book forza! Amon.
Also in that book is the answer to the other question!
Another funny tale about Amon/McLaren concerns the races held at Nassau each year. McLaren sent Amon to the event with instructions to set up both his own and McLarens F3 cars because Bruce was in Dearborn talking to Ford.
Amon said he'd always been the junior driver therefore he always got the leftovers, but this time he had the chance and put all the good bits on his own car!
When McLaren rocked up on the grid Amon told him "I've put all the good bits on my car, you've got what's left!"
He reckons McLaren walked away muttering something about "teaching the little bugger too well"
Of course Amon won the race and the $10,000 prize but McLaren had the last laugh, sending Teddy Mayer in to claim half of it!
As to the Answer to the question: the car was nicknamed Big Ed ,after the awful ford Edsel. It was obvious what the testers thought of it ,Amon hated it but I believe others had more respect for it as a test bed.
Ive just read your next post....
I was commenting about the financial situation that Miles found himself in at the time.
As to Dan Gurney he was doing as every other contracted driver is expected to do ,he raced where his sponser thought was the best exposure for their product.
Gurney knew how to play the game and played it well ,his sponsers were very loyal to him.
Yes, I think Miles could have used some diplomatic skills, especially with Ford themselves. He didn't endear himself to the influencers at Ford when he called the mustang a DOG!
All of my comments are opinions only and I love to debate points of view. I am no expert, just someone with a 50 year passion for this wonderful discipline and I hope my opinions add something to the debate.
You sir , have my respect,Idon't doubt your knowledge or your passion,it's people like you who will make sure that motorsport history is remembered correctly.
Now, where is my copy of Steve McQueens Le Mans.........
      Cheers!
