      The STF is on another level. The background is like no other. If you have enough light, the proper lighting, and proper editing nothing can compare.

      I prefer the background and foreground Bokeh in the 100mm STF lens. I enjoy the way it keeps the subject's eyes, nose, lips, and forehead in sharp focus while having a soft rounded bokeh in background without the distracting football-shaped edges requiring tons of work in post. This gives the subject a 3-D pop to the overall photo. Colors are great as well when there is enough light. You just have to ensure that the background and foreground has enough adequate separation, light and balance. You cant just shoot any kinda way with this lens. Pictures with this lens must be well-planned ahead and well thought out artistically before touching this lens. This lens is a gem when you let it shine and its a specialty and one of a kind and will make your pictures stand out from the rest. That is the secret of this lens. This lens also seems great for group shots and you don't have to worry about out of focus subjects so much. I also like how you pretty much are just using the lens wide open on portraits all the time.. No need to worry about the settings. This lens could also dubb as a macro lens as well, allowing you to get more use out of the aperture ring by stopping down at close focusing distance while maintain creamy bokeh. Yeah I know this lens is not as fast as the other GM primes, but you just have to turn up the heat, turn on the light, find the light. That what photography is all about - the study of light. We need to slow down and experiment with getting more light into the lens to see its glory. Get light into this lens and it will pay for itself with far less shots with just a little more forethought and effort. To get larger bokeh balls, get closer to the subject and experiment with the background separation distance to get the right size. This is one lens I would have fun practicing and honing my skills. Cheers!!!

    The STF is incredible for environmental portraits, none of these images really show how the lens knocks it out the park in terms of depth of sharpness and totally buttery background. The xmas lights shot did show its superior smooth bokeh in comparison to the "tunnel" swirl shape of the bokeh field of the Sigma (and almost every other lens). As you said, headshots and body shots the STF is perfect too, the whole face will be incredibly sharp from tip of the nose back to the ears at T5.6 but anything behind will be totally blatted out, to get everything sharp like this with any other lens you will not get the separation of background and buttery bokeh. I only use mine outdoors though, if I'm indoors I usually get my 35mm 1.4 out the bag

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  4 года назад +3

      I had done a test many years ago that included the Sony A mount 135mm STF and I had considered buying that one because of the extra length gave me the amount of blur but in the end, I got the 100mm STF instead plus I like the sort of macro mode which can create beautiful shots too. Like the flower shots with the STF are untouchable.
      I always find it interesting how we all have such different use for our tools depending on our shooting styles. Like indoors you use the 35mm 1.4 for example while I usually grab the 105mm. :)
      Thanks for watching!

    The funny thing is that I'm finally in a position to get one of these lenses and I'm watching videos of people reviewing them from 2+ years ago (lol). Ah well, better late then never. Anyways, I had the Sigma 105 1.4 and Sony 135 GM for a day to test. Went out for simple and fun street photography (I actually loathe it but whatever), and my perspective is a little strange. Having the 135 GM felt...underwhelming. I know the tests, the reviews, MFT charts that technically state the 135 GM is one of the sharpest and best lenses ever made by Sony, besides their $10K ones, but I guess I was just expecting more. The Sigma on the other hand, wow. What a beast of a lens. Gigantic and so much fun. Unwieldy tbh, but it left an impression not only on everyone around me but with incredibly sharp, medium format looking photos. It was impressive but the front element means filters are going to be expensive and I've heard of people getting dust in the lens. On top of that, the bokeh on both was weird, lemony, and I did not enjoy that. Sigma was a bit better than Sony's in that aspect but still, and yes I could, and did adjust the aperture, not enough of a difference. Then I started learning about this STF and apodization lenses...the look I'm going for, but at a 2.8 that lights like a 5.6? Ugh, why! Anyways if ya read this far thank you. I could use help replacing and upgrading my FE 85 1.8, not the sharpest, not the easiest to use daily because it's so close up, and yet I'm looking at more compression. Thoughts? 100 STF, another 85 (isn't there a new one coming soon?) 135 GM, or back to the big boy 105?

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  Год назад

      So the 100mm STF had way too little blur for my taste unless you are very close to the subject and far away background. I prefer the 105mm art by far
      You could try the offer stf 135mm a-mount (manual focus) for more compression and blur than the 100mm stf).
      If you want fast speed and blur but with stf rendering the only option is the Canon RF 85mm 1.2 I'm afraid.
      Thanks

    Sigma 105 1.4 all the way man. Total beast. Like literally first lens I got after I switched to Sony even though I don't use it much. I loved it when I had it with my Nikon D810. The good benefit also that comes with that lens is that it helps get bigger biceps, shoulders and forearms.

    All 3 lenses used were quite nice. The Sigma has the smoothest most appealing bokeh, but I also liked the Canon 200mm 2.8 on shots where it was used. The focal length made for a unique look. The Sony was my third favorite, but still a look that I like and a lens I would like to try.

  • @PavelR2
    @PavelR2 4 года назад

    Problem with STF is with distracting background - grass / tree leaves / small lights in night shots. If the exposure of the subjects is the same, the center of the light source is exposed higher on STF lens than on regular one. Thus it is over exposed many times and can not be fixed in post. STF shines if your goal is to show the most of the background structure in the photo. + of course 105/1.4 can be stopped down to desired amount of blur, but STF can not be open more than 2.8 nor can disable filter.

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  4 года назад

      I consider it more of a specialized lens since as you mentioned, in some cases it will not deliver the best results indeed. I still find it good for certain looks and styles of photos, just wish it was cheaper since for MY needs, the usage is more limited and hard to justify such an expensive lens sitting in my bag most of the time.
      Thank you!!

      @@LuisGabrielPhotography I do not own it because T5.6 is limiting in the low light situations too. The photography is my hobby thus I do not need to count every $ to all my gear be paid by the photography jobs. The lens which produce the images I like the most is 200/2 and I do not consider to sell it even I use it only several times a year. (I bought it used just under 1/2 of the price of new.one.) My go to portrait lens today is 105/1.4 - the better bg blur can do only 135/1.8 and 200/2, but I do not like working distance for posing shots of the longer lenses.

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  4 года назад

      @@PavelR2 Actually 105mm 1.4 gives smoother blur than 135mm 1.8 as you will see on my next video. I had the sigma 135mm and 135mm GM and sold them when I bought the Sigma 105mm 1.4 because of the background smoothness and 3D pop. Now your 200/2 that is a beast I want to add eventually. Just hoping that Sigma comes up with one for Sony :D

      @@LuisGabrielPhotography I own Sony 135/1.8 GM and it gives bigger bokeh circles -> bigger subject isolation than 105/1.4 ;-) And AF speed of 135GM is the fastest of any lens I've ever used (Sony, Nikon, Canon), may be 400GM is as fast/faster. But 70-200GM, Canon 70-200/2.8 IS II / 200/2 (on 1ds3/1d4) is not as fast.

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography  4 года назад +1

      @@pavelrezny1969 Actually it gives more compression not more isolation. I had it too ;) But you need to be comparing keeping the subject the same size. If you are shooting from the same distance with both the 135mm and 105mm then the extra length of the 135mm will make the subject bigger an create more separation and blur, that is correct.
      But when you keep the subject the same size, then the story changes. You will see it tomorrow on my next video where I shot the Canon 85mm 1.2 SD the Sony 135mm GM and the Sigma 105mm 1.4.
