It's so typical of our community games, and as far as the audience getting wet on the bridge is concerned, that's the whole point, you stand exactly where you ARE going to get soaked! Cheese rolling and tar-barrelling come to mind.

The Volunteer fire brigade that he refers to is a jokey name for a grouo of Volunteers ready to assist in an emergency. Those people who are using the hoses are Retained Firefighters, part of the county Fire and Rescue service, who are trained but have other jobs, being called out when needed, on an annual retaining fee plus pay for the hours they work. They can of course can and do tackle fires and other emergencies.
Who on earth is telling you a bunch of people don't like James Acaster? Are you sure you're not thinking of Corden?

As someone who once was a volunteer or retained firefighter, I'd just like to clear up that they CAN absolutely put out fires, as I'm sure you have suspected. James is hilarious. 😂😂
I've had volunteer firefighter friends - not one of them ever wasted beer by pouring it on a fire.

I think the people who don't like him are the people who hate what those people deem as "woke" (otherwise known as - in it's modern usage - diversity, equality, inclusivity, or representation of minorities and/or historically marginalized communities, along with sensitivity, respect, and equal treatment of those communities). I think that's probably the biggest portion of people who dislike like him. James isn't afraid to say how he feels on something, or call out another comedian.
Everything James said is 100% spot on but the volunteer fire brigade isn’t from Kettering but another town nearby - that’s genuinely their logo and their truck does look a bit like a 1930s ice cream truck.

(Volunteer firefighters aren’t the same as you have in the US but we do have Retained firefighters which are slightly different - but more like your volunteers. The Geddington Volunteer Fire Brigade that Jerry’s from has quite a unique history and they formed from local residents during the 1977 Fireman’s Strike.)

If you want to go for dinner with James check out his podcast Off Menu - it’s hilarious! At the time of writing there’s 252 episodes and some of the guests are amazing, although I strongly recommend starting from the beginning to appreciate the concept fully.
You are allowed to ' embellish' a true story , and there are plenty of one - off games and traditions about . James persona of the 'angry young man' works well in his comedy and particularly on WILTY .
Feel like this was an easy James pick for any one from the UK.
That sort of quirky local game, and the details he gave made it all too believable.
As a native Brit, the squirt game sounds exactly the kind of thing that might happen in a village somewhere each year.

I didn't know there were a lot of people who don't like James! I love him both as a panellists and a stand-up... to each his own, I guess 😅
The only bit James wasn't truthful about, was the fact that the volunteer firemen CAN put out fires... That was clearly a joke to us in the UK, because it would be pointless being a volunteer fireman if you cant put out fires. Volunteer firemen are quite common in the UK, so nearly everyone in the UK is aware that they can actually put out fires, hence it wasn't meant to mislead David's team, it was a joke. Not sure if you have volunteer firemen in the US, but it very common in the UK because they supplement the full-time fire brigade. I have posted a link to a video of a game of squirt that James is referring to, in it you can see the small fire engine that James said looked like and ice-cream van painted red, It is actually a vintage fire truck form the 1940's or 50's, but you can see exactly what he means in the video.
In Australia most towns only really have volunteer firefighters, is it the same in the UK, where only large cities have non-volunteers?
If you read up on the Geddington Volunteer Fire Brigade (who take part in the Squirt) you'll see he was telling the truth. The GVFB were formed as a local volunteer force in the 70's when the actual fire brigade was on strike, they never had to actually put out any fires during the strike and when the strike ended they stood down from any emergency relief, but continued on as a local charity organisation that does not put out fires. (and their logo is indeed a beer glass putting out a fire and they own a very old fire truck that resembles an ice cream van).
@@johnadams9314 Wow that amazing, that is a very specific set of circumstances to have caused that situation. I remember our milkman was a volunteer fireman, and every now and then the milk would be late because he was on a call.

The fireman's friend: is completely believable. Imagine a volunteer fire brigade that got sued and can't be insured anymore... Now imagine a traditional game that comes hell or higher water is played... The T Shirt with the fire being put out with a pint of beer was the clincher to confirm this one to me.
It had just the right level of English eccentricity.

Hi , Just the British having a laugh ,if you think the squirt game is unlikely ,try watching people Chasing a wheel of cheese down Coopers Hill in Gloucestershire,or the annual Atherstone Ball Game ,Bog Snorkeling in Llanwyrtyd ,or the contest to see who can eat the most beetles in 30 minutes,all real ,all on line somewhere, ❤❤ Ps ,the spellchecker can't cope with Welsh spelling.

As someone who lives in a small town, I had no trouble believing James' story, even with some of the embellishments that he obviously added. It's such a perfect little small town tradition and the exact type of thing that would happen there.

If i's a crazy game involving local traditions and copious amounts of drinking, i's probably true.
We Brits get bored easily and this is how we amuse ourselves.
Volunteer firemen (retained firefighters) carry out all the same duties as full time crews, and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them at a fire. In fact some rural fire stations don't have any full time crews, so James's description of them is less than honest.
From what I believe, Lee Mack was diagnosed with ADHD and was on meds at this point for it, the blinking / twitch can be side effect of this medication.
Odd! I too have both ADHD and take meds, Ritalin specifically, and hadn’t ever encountered tales of that particular symptom. I wonder what meds Lee’s on?

You still haven't gleaned that comedians are allowed to embellish their stories? Try focusing on what it is written on the card. They read the card and then the opposing panel get to ask them questions to decide whether or not they (the opposing panel) think it the truth or a lie. In their answers, even if they are telling the truth, they are allowed to embellish a bit because they are comedians and actors for the most part. So, in the end, you're really paying attention to what they read off of the card more than anything else. Rarely are all the details being related true. Just focus on the sentence, or sentences they read off the card.

Maybe Lee double blinks when he's lying. A lot of people have little tells when they are lying and increased blink rate is a classic sign. It's actually a sign of increased stress, rather than that the person is lying, but generally when people are lying they feel more stress.

Sian is the Welsh spelling of Sean. Have you ever heard of British game show Taskmaster? James was one of the five contestants in series 7 of the show, which was (IMO) the most hilarious series, thanks largely to James and to fellow contestant Rhod Gilbert. Well worth checking out.

I don't know if you've watched it already, but two of the best Truth or Lie were The Wood People and Bob Mortimer's haircuts. I wondered be surprised if James is 100% true, we do lots of strange things in villages and towns in Britain. We have the Atherstone ball game near me, it's brutal.

If you search it on youtube, you'll see its true, there's videos of squirt being played (I could find the 2019 and 2013 ones). Apparently it's Geddington vs Kettering.
James is brilliant and very well loved. A large part of one of his recent stand-up shows wasn’t to the taste of a certain demographic, likely mostly made up of people who think Jim Davidson is funny, and therefore shouldn’t be paid any attention whatsoever.

I knew it was James when he described the game. We had that in my hometown, tho we didn't call it Squirt and it wasn't played across a river; just in a parking lot. Nor any bridges, we just stood close enuf to get soaked.
I really like James Acaster and the way he tells a story. As for Lee Mack, it looks like a tic, maybe that's what happens after sitting opposite David Mitchell for that many years.

When Lee lies he usually blinks like that, once you spotted it you can't unsee it
I'm not sure if that's a tell, that kind of hard blinking is usually some sort of issue with the eyes like a strain or dryness
@@rishabhpb There are a huge amount of reasons for that kind of blinking, tourette syndrome for example, but I'm watching WILTY for years and I've noticed a long time ago that when Lee is lying his blinking gets much more noticeable during the initial part when he thinks of the background story.

Acaster did a comedy special called “cold lasagna hate myself 1999” something like that! It was woke trash! Full cringe. But… I have really liked literally everything else he’s been in and done. I think he gets written off for that special but I’d rather treat it like GoT seasons 7/8 and just ignore it and enjoy the rest.
