And then they are disappointed she doesn't get the message *after she wins* (when they clearly needed the opposite to happen for the "you need to open your mind to control" message to make some sense). The White Lotus is a noble institution, but unwillingly teach Korra the very same bending vices that fuel the revolution: if you have a problem... keep pushing it until it's done. Korra, like most Avatars, has been trained under a limited vision of the world that (besides bending) ends up being useless to relate to the problems of the world in a day to day basis.
@@joshuamorales1215 it actually is, all her childhood she could never leave to the fairs in her own tribe or never had a single friend of her age. All of these it's in the comics. A shame that's not explicit in the show bc people would understand korra Better.
Best Girl Asami just crashed onto the scene. Something small I liked is that Korra, while trying to break the steam valve and is confronted by the big guy, she never uses her Bending at all. It’s close quarters so that makes sense but also it really shows off that even without her Bending she’s not defenseless. She tossed that dude.
Earlier you see that too with mako. Mako send the ball to her, she barely flinched, but when she sent it back, she sends him flying. Also, she hugged and lifted Tenzin and his whole family up... Girl is strong af.
So Naga is a girl and Pabu is a boy. Idk if that gets cleared up later, but just in case. Also, a lot of the animation we see on screen isn't representative of what the characters see such as airbending or the lights from the eyes of Ozai and Aang. They did those lights to show us the viewers of the battle of spirit but in the show, I believe that no character actually saw that except for maybe Aang.
I think the idea behind lightning bending being a lot more mundane in this time is that in the past, it wasn't limited as much by the actual difficulty of executing it, but rather by the fact that only the elite were ever trained to use it, kind of as a parallel to how in certain feudal societies, commoners weren't allowed to own or use higher-quality weaponry. When Zuko became Firelord and he and Aang built the United Republic, they broke through the cultural barrier and allowed lightning-bending to be taught to anyone with the temperament and ability to do so.
It's a different animation studio but with a lot of the same animators from ATLA. They jumped from 3000-4000 drawings per episode in ATLA, to 15.000 to 20.000 drawings per episode in Korra. Also more CG in a way you don't really notice like vehicles. Much smoother, more details and much more martial arts in Korra. Amon is an interesting character. Enjoy the ride :-)
Such a shame they ran out of drawings for most of the second season, they should have saved some to use later. 4-5 drawings per episode was rough to watch.
@@anothervagabond I have no idea what you're talking about. You can criticize Season 2 for a lot of stuff, but definitely not the animation. It looks great, and so does the rest of the show.
@@20000dino Did you miss the scene in the early season where Korra and Iroh were being animated at roughly 1 frame per second? Like I said, things get better after the early part of the season because they moved back to a good studio, but the animation of the early episodes is absolutely lacking.
I love how Korra is essentially, in every way possible, the complete opposite of Aang as the Avatar - she's the epitome of "bend first, ask questions later," whereas Aang always tried to settle things with as little violence/force as possible.
Korra's spent her entire life sheltered and training to fight. She had no peers, no friends her own age before Mako and Bolin. She has no experience interacting with people socially, that's why her first instinct is to fight. It's something she has to grow past over time.
I'm glad you commented on the music. Many people look at the soundtrack to this show as a character all it's own. The emotion some of the songs create are amazing. Loving the vids, keep it up❤
Another fun voice actor fun fact. In the Legend of Vox Machina, Keyleth is very much inspired by Aang and the Avatar series as a whole (4 different elemental tribes, and a journey to learn to control the elements). And Keyleth's mother is voiced by Korra's voice actor, Janet Varney! So Keyleth's mother is voiced by an Avatar
Fun fact about Asami, her voice actress also played Princess Yue in the live action Last Airbender Movie. Edit: didn’t know you already mentioned this in your video, I didn’t watch that fair it didn’t catch it. My bad.
I love the real-life message that carries the second of today's episodes. Admitting fears and talking about them with anyone, especially people close to us, is such an important thing to do in order to stay healthy and stable. Life can be really heavy sometimes & sharing is caring. Both materialistically and mentally.
Dee Bradley Baker voicing the somewhat obnoxious Tarlok is a treasure instead of just being the creatures. It's weird to hear something closer to his actual voice when usually he's doing a difficult voice. Korra is aggressive but tbh I don't mind it compared to the sometimes way too passive Aang.
Spot on - Korra is Aang's opposite, and you sometimes get frustrated at her instinctual aggression the same way you get frustrated over Aang's instinctual passivity
I love watching Avatar and Korra reactions because everyone has such different takes and opinions. Listening to you treat Korra with such understanding and in your pre-episode talk calling Mako out for being a jerk until he found out Korra was the avatar was also refreshing. Edit: That statue is in fact young adult Zuko. Also, you pointing out the animation during the equalist attack on the Triad hideout made me appreciate it more
Korra challenging Amon kinda gives me the same vibe as when Katara challenged Pakku. Maybe cause the lines are so similar. “Tonight at midnight, on Avatar Aang memorial Island, if you’re man enough to face me.” “I’ll be outside if you’re man enough to fight me.”
So you should know, just to adjust your expectations, that season one of korra was meant to be a self contained mini series. Once it did well nickelodeon ordered a second mininseries which was season 2, then they ordered 2 more seasons. So the stories are mostly all contained in each season because they didnt know they were having another season. Also, there are going to be things in season 2 that you HATE. but it is worth getting through because season 3 and 4 are amazing
"She's a little impatient..." Literally her first line is "I'm the Avatar and you gotta deal with it!" It is, in my opinion, one of the most perfect character introductions ever. The scene says so much on metatextual (viewer, this is the new Avatar, deal), textual (look at me I'm a badass), and subtextual (this is the kind of person who is driven to be the best, what does that mean?) levels while being incredibly economical with both showing and telling.
I know what most people have a problem with this is the fact that it’s a trope that’s outlived it’s lifespan about the whole strong, single independent women need no man. By the time legend of Korra debuted, I was already tired of it especially Hollywood pushing for that narrative.
@@redfieldwong717 If you think that after decades of celebrating the lone, stoic man that a few dozen examples of strong, independent women have somehow exhausted that storytelling well then I think you have a lot of introspection to do.
I really appreciate the contrast from the previous generation. In Last Airbender one of the main conflicts was the team of young, scrappy underdogs going up against a significant physical threat -- the war machine of the Fire Nation, as well as the power of benders like Ozai and Azula. Korra, in contrast, is physically powerful -- physically strong, with bending ability that outmatches most of the other benders she goes up against (the advantage of years of training, which Aang didn't get in anything but air bending). Her instincts are to tackle a problem head on, but they're steering her wrong because she can't punch the problems facing Republic City. The problems aren't physical, they're social and political.
Steve Blum is the GOAT. Probably one of the best voice actors of all time. His Amon is just so chillingly badass. I remember watching this when it first came out and my friends and I went crazy with theories about what the hell Amon is, becuase there's no way a lion turtle gave this dude the most powerful bending ability in history.
The lights from Aang and Ozai's fight was a visual representation of the contest of wills happening inside their psyche. It actually didn't happen, it was only ever meant to be visual crutch for the audience to understand what exactly was going on. Going forward you will not see the lights during any displays of energy bending.
I think Tenzin can be so rigid with his methods because he feels like he needs to preserve the Air nomad tradition seen as though he and his family are the only ones left. He doesn’t want the tradition to die out when he passes away.
I really enjoy your reactions because it feels like you empathize with the characters well. Whenever they do something pretty stupid, or mean, or make mistakes, you think about what might have been their mindset or motivation for doing so. Instead of just judging them for not acting ideally. And it's true for all the reactions of yours I"ve seen!
I love how this series portraits the change the world took. More industrialismn and bending is now a daily life task for workers. Some might guess that there is hidden critic to the real life in it. A little fun fact: Tophs voice actress is currently rewatching the avatar series on youtube. I think this could be a good source of some more background info about AtlA.
Amon is pretty much my favourite villain in LoK. He's just so cool, terrifying, with Steve Blum's wonderfully smooth evil voice. He's perfect! One thing this show does excel in is the villains.
Even if I'm at the more critical side of LoK I think season 1 has great moments like these episodes. Admitting her fears is really a big step and I'm glad it came to this. That's lots of character growth!
The lights coming out of the eyes when aang took ozais bending was just for effect and climatic buildup. It was just an animated style of choice to show viewers how yiur soul can get corrupted if you don't persevere through the process. In actuality taking and giving bending back doesn't need the light show just the same hand placements on the head.... but you'll find out how amon is doing that
I love how well you cut to the core of things in these, like in your intro when you said "If you can defend yourself against any type of bending, you might feel invincible." Cut to this episode where you find out what Amon is capable of
I got so excited when I got this notification cause I couldn't wait to see your reactions through this episode. Also love bolin must protect him at all costs he's the sweetest little bean 🥰🥺
Tenzin named his bison Oogie because in the comics whenever Aang and Katara did something a mushy couple do, he said it have him the oogies. So Oogie is named after the love the two had for each other
So Zuko's mom name was Ursa. Kya who is Katara's daughter was originally the name they had for Katara. I think they later used it as Gran Gran's name (you hear it in the Waterbending master episode). Also i love how they gave an interesting character for Dee Bradley Baker to voice (Tarrlok).
It's something I love for TLOK as a whole is that the villains have pretty good motivations. The non benders vs benders inequality is genuinely such a fascinating thing to come out of this show and I hope it doesn't get side-lined if we ever get a new Avatar after Korra.
nothing can express the feeling of watching this show as it was airing, especially during this first season. It was a constant air of anxiety and fear every week.
I don't think there were literal lights coming out of Aang & Ozai's eyes when Aang was taking away his bending, I think that was just metaphorical imagery for the audience to follow the "will Ozai's spirit corrupt/overpower Aang's spirit?" struggle.
The theories that were going around back when this show first started were WILD. I saw multiple people back then think that Amon was a resurrected Aang turned to evil since he's the only mf we'd seen take bending away
I don’t think it was ressurected but that Aang grew old, realised bending was a curse and banished the avatar spirit from his body, but that was the theory I heard anyway
Just in time for baking christmas cookies 😊 but also can’t believe that we’re almost at the half-season mark! These short seasons will be over before we even realize it 😮😅
In this show, Team Avatar is like Heroes For Hire in Marvel comics: everyone is an ex of everyone else. Heroes For Hire was the inspiration for the A-Team (I don't know if you ever saw that show, the compound bow was basically that with superpowers).
I'm impressed that you knew and gave recognition to David Faustino. He is my age, and I grew up watching him on Married with Children. You're the first reactor I've seen who gave him props.
I love JK Simmons' voice work on Tenzin; we're so used to him playing J Jonah Jameson and other blowhards, but he's so kind and supportive as Tenzin, except those hilarious instances when his patience gets tried.
Korra hasn't air-bended. That scene at the Equalist rally in episode 3 was her water bending the steam from the pipes to obscure the stage. Steam is just water in its gas state.
It just came to me that “You’re oppressing yourself” was said by Korra in ep 1 came with exact same sentiment as Blue Hawk in the Boys. Gal constantly going “Are we the baddies?” was delightful.
Major props for mentioning Dee Bradley Baker, Appa literally carried the show on his back, and Momo’s contributions can’t be understated, both of which are (of course) masterfully voiced by Baker
I think the most important thing to remember about this season is that it was meant to be a mini-series, which accounts for how fast paced it can be sometimes.
I like your way of thinking “getting more things done with honey than with vinegar” in my experience doesn’t always work lol sometimes I have to be stern and blunt about things while occasionally raising my voice but not to a point of yelling 😅
"It has been the cause of every war in every era" But of course, as we know, living in a non-bending world, humans don't need bending to start wars. Still I appreciate how someone might make this connection in a world that only knew bending. Then again, "Benders start wars. So we're gonna get the upper hand on them and start a war with them" is just like... such troll logic.
Steve Blum is a well-known voice actor whom I have also watched for years. I first remember him as the voice of Wolverine on the old 90's X-men cartoon.
I love the fact that you don't automatically hate Korra personally I like this show granted it's not like the original series but it's still good in it's own right btw the narrator is the same guy who narrated Clone Wars
"I didn't see the lights come out of the eyes though!" Maaaaaaaaaaaaan, EVERY SINGLE DISCUSSION ABOUT IT hinged on that one single fact when the show first came out. Flame wars and wild mass guessing for *weeks* on end. It was a lot of fun! :)
Hmm I got the thought just now when you asked about whether Amon has turtle lion powers that there wasn't any light like there was with Aang, that perhaps that was just Aang's perspective on what was happening, because Sokka, Suki and Toph who arrived there shortly after made no comment of it, they only commented on the physical fighting between Aang and Ozai. So maybe energy bending is spiritual and therefore maybe only those in contact with the spirit world can see the light battle. Much like in the Winter Solstice episode, when uncle Iroh was captured by Earthbenders and Aang flew over them in the spirit world on Roku's dragon, Iroh saw the dragon because he had connections to the spirit world (presumably something he started learning about after he lost his son), but the Earthbenders didn't see anything and just saw that Iroh was looking at something. Korra hasn't been able to connect to the spirit world, so if Amon is a turtle lion in disguise and does some spiritual bending, then only he would see it and we haven't really seen things from Amon's perspective so that could be why it's not shown to us either.
In the start of this when you were talking about Tenzin realizing Korra needed to learn differently, I instantly heard a guy I knew back in the early 70s, in high school - "Exactly the same, except totally different!" With Mako, keep in mind he is 18, and Korra is 17 ... oh, and Bolin is 16. Asami is also 18. Lots of revelations brings lots of questions too. Avatar, based on the technology we saw and the nature of the cultures, etc, seemed to be mostly a match to the somewhere in the 1700s to the 1800s more in the middle of that. This is more the early 1900s - some parts fit more in the 1910-1920 period, other bits are more in the 1930s. One last thing - Pabu is male, Naga is female - Korra has said "Come here girl" and similar things a few times at this point and Bolin has said "Good boy" to Pabu.
I love how Amon is the bad guy because we see the world through the Avatars eyes, but if we saw through a random citizen he would be a hero. Imagine if there where people that could set you on fire or drown you or cruch you whenever they wanted.
This, and he can easily builds his fighter up by selling chi-blocking like we sell Krav Maga today as a self defense tool in an hostile world. Any citizen would see this as a gift, and as security...
@gerardlacroix6015 and In a way, he's correct. Non benders deserve a way to defend themselves against benders, but they are being given out to be used as weapons to fight, not tools for self defense. Amon is 100% right, but how he's going about it makes it clear that it's for the wrong reason, he's using truth to accomplish selfish goals
Your comment made me thinking. I think I get your point, but I got another, a different idea. Imagine if there were people that could shoot you with a gun. It's not the bending, it's about people and how they use their powers. I think Amon and Zahir are the best "villains" because their pov are somewhat relatable, and to some extent they are right about the world.
Yep, that's how a lot of cult leaders operate. The sky is falling and only dear leader can save you. There was a man with a mustache and a bad haircut that told the people of Germany he had a plan to save them from the Weimar Republic. Without going too far into Godwin's Law, there's a great video by Theremin Trees about how many tyrants play themselves off as saviors in order to rally people to their causes. Heck, the Fire Lord back in the day probably rallied the Fire Nation with promises to save their nations from the foreign hordes. Always pay attention to who's telling the narrative, and get the proper context. ruclips.net/video/oX3qM4VqbJo/видео.html
I love how some of her theories about who the characters might be are true in a very specific way. But of course I wont spoil what exactly (in case shes still watching)
Amon is voiced by the legendary Steve Blum. He voices sub zero in mortal kombat, zeb in rebels, zabuza and orochimaru in naruto. The list goes on and on. He's definitely my favorite voice actor. Bonus: Lance Henriksen voices Amons lieutenant.
These episodes made me invested in Amon as an antagonist, they're very capable in every sense of the word. Strong, calculating, cunning and charismatic plus the non-bender vs bender/avatar dynamic is such an interesting idea to explore. Side note that's been bugging me lately, who does everyone think the strongest non-benders are in the avatar universe? My votes on Suki for taking out entire blimp of juiced up Imperial Fire Benders during Sozen's Comet :P
Oh, I literally just saw and learned about red pandas at an aquarium/zoo yesterday and - looked it up, Fire Ferrets are indeed Korra’s version of Red Pandas

Aang was a person learning to become a god. Korra is a god trying to learn how to be a person.
@@joshuamorales1215 it actually is, all her childhood she could never leave to the fairs in her own tribe or never had a single friend of her age. All of these it's in the comics. A shame that's not explicit in the show bc people would understand korra Better.
Janet Varney does such a great job. They all do, but what an understated gravitas and emotional presence.
I love that you can see Aang and Katara in Tenzin. He's got his mom's spiciness, but his dad's tranquility
I don't know how, but the "block cheese" bit only got funnier every time.
I was gonna say the same thing lol
Best Girl Asami just crashed onto the scene.
Something small I liked is that Korra, while trying to break the steam valve and is confronted by the big guy, she never uses her Bending at all. It’s close quarters so that makes sense but also it really shows off that even without her Bending she’s not defenseless. She tossed that dude.
Korra definitely is not afraid of flexing the "Muscle Avatar casts Fist" approach to fighting from time to time :)
They did those lights to show us the viewers of the battle of spirit but in the show, I believe that no character actually saw that except for maybe Aang.
i think the spiritpower of aang and ozais eyes were real but i guess we dont get a clarification
@@anothervagabond That's on Pierrot Studio, my god I curse those animators til this day.
I love how Korra is essentially, in every way possible, the complete opposite of Aang as the Avatar - she's the epitome of "bend first, ask questions later," whereas Aang always tried to settle things with as little violence/force as possible.
yet aang killed sooo many people
Korra's spent her entire life sheltered and training to fight.
Little Janet Varney is so cool
Fun fact about Asami, her voice actress also played Princess Yue in the live action Last Airbender Movie.
Edit: didn’t know you already mentioned this in your video, I didn’t watch that fair it didn’t catch it. My bad.
I don't know what movie you're talking about... there's never been a live action The Last Airbender movie 😂😂😂😂
Glad she got her redemption lol

@@guuuut didn’t see that part, my bad. Don’t gotta be a Dick about it.
I love the real-life message that carries the second of today's episodes. Admitting fears and talking about them with anyone, especially people close to us, is such an important thing to do in order to stay healthy and stable. Life can be really heavy sometimes & sharing is caring. Both materialistically and mentally.
The best work lunch break treat! Excited for you to digest the themes of Korra over the seasons!
I wanted to write the same comment, so here is your like!
Spot on - Korra is Aang's opposite, and you sometimes get frustrated at her instinctual aggression the same way you get frustrated over Aang's instinctual passivity
I can’t hear Tarlok without hearing a more serious version of Talking Momo from the Nightmares and Daydreams episode of ATLA.
Speaking of Dee Bradley, the four-year-old Korra in episode was voiced by… his own daughter, Cora Baker.
Heh.
“Tonight at midnight, on Avatar Aang memorial Island, if you’re man enough to face me.”
“I’ll be outside if you’re man enough to fight me.”
I just finished season 1 a few minutes ago and figured this out. It felt weird at the end, now I know why.

Overanalyzing Avatar is doing Korra right now and i couldn't be happier to watch him and this in parallel
"She's a little impatient..."
Literally her first line is "I'm the Avatar and you gotta deal with it!" It is, in my opinion, one of the most perfect character introductions ever.
Pabu is basically a ferret and red panda mixed together so you're not wrong.
I forgot how much I love this season. Keep up the great reactions and analysis!
Also, super happy to be back to the world of Avatar. 😊
ZEB. He's literally ZEB.

The lights from Aang and Ozai's fight was a visual representation of the contest of wills happening inside their psyche. It actually didn't happen, it was only ever meant to be visual crutch for the audience to understand what exactly was going on. Going forward you will not see the lights during any displays of energy bending.
Kya was Kitara's mother.. and Bumi was Aang's friend. So their kids were named after who they were closest. And then Tenzin is the baby... lol
Kya was named after Katara's mother. Zuko's mother's name was Ursa.
The statue is in fact of Zuko. There’s a red patch on his left eye, ie his scar.
I was not ready for that Block Cheese 🤣
Lol your face and reaction to Lin at the party was priceless.
And Lin is great, she's one of my favorites in the show.
Without giving too much away, Season 3 of Legend Korra is my all time fav season from both shows. Its so good. The Legend of Korra is underrated
Simon's Voice actor is Steve Blum. He does a rather incredible Wolverine voice as well.

Little side info:
"Tenzin Gyatso" is the name of the Dalai Lama. ;)
Tenzin named his bison Oogie because in the comics whenever Aang and Katara did something a mushy couple do, he said it have him the oogies. So Oogie is named after the love the two had for each other

31:15 - Enter Best Girl! Asami is awesome! I had a huge crush on her back then. XD
44:20 - Yes, you did! That was Toph. And Sokka... And Aang!!!
And, additionally, Katara is voiced by Golden Age of Holywood legend, Eve Marie Saint.
To answer.. yes, that was a Zuko Statue in the park of Republic City! :)
The theories that were going around back when this show first started were WILD. I saw multiple people back then think that Amon was a resurrected Aang turned to evil since he's the only mf we'd seen take bending away
lol. Curious, what was your theory? I remember the answer was a complete shock to me.
This book and series is real slow burner but when it heats up, boy is it worth it with shocking twists and surprises it has in store.
Major props for mentioning Dee Bradley Baker, Appa literally carried the show on his back, and Momo’s contributions can’t be understated, both of which are (of course) masterfully voiced by Baker
Loved the reaction to the cheapening of lighting bending
I think the most important thing to remember about this season is that it was meant to be a mini-series, which accounts for how fast paced it can be sometimes.
Yes, it was older Aang in that vision Korra had. Also Toph and Sokka.
Kya is named after Katara's mom, not Zuko's
Asami is voiced by Seychelle Gabriel who played Yue in the last Airbender movie
At least something good came from that movie
@CrownofMischief too bad it took about 2-3 years
"I didn't see the lights come out of the eyes though!" Maaaaaaaaaaaaan, EVERY SINGLE DISCUSSION ABOUT IT hinged on that one single fact when the show first came out.
I love the new opening title card! Glad you're enjoying the new series!
Dee Bradley Baker also plays the voice of the employee who sends Tarrlok’s gifts
In the start of this when you were talking about Tenzin realizing Korra needed to learn differently, I instantly heard a guy I knew back in the early 70s, in high school - "Exactly the same, except totally different!"
With Mako, keep in mind he is 18, and Korra is 17 ... oh, and Bolin is 16.
To quote George Takei, when Asami appears: "Ohhhhhhhhh my"
The composer is Jeremy Zuckerman. He's incredible, he did the compositions for The Last Airbender and Korra

To answer your question. The voice actor for Amon is "Steve Bloom" you being a Star Wars fan would know him as "Zeb" from Star Wars Rebels
