It isn't a lie about breakfast and the grits: it's an honest miscalculation and amnesia about time: no one else caught it, but Vinny, who has recently learned about how long grits take to cook, has it clearly in his mind in a way the residents don't. There is no cover-up, it's simple human nature. Aside from the actual killers, there are no villains in this story.

I think it's pretty interesting that your first instinct was that the witnesses where collaborating to get them declared guilty when it turned out to all just be a series of unfortunate coincidences.
Which i actually like because it's way more realistic than the whole town covering up a murder.

It really isn't abuse: Haller warned Vinny way at the beginning that he's a stickler for procedure, and that if it's ignored, he's an impatient man. Procedure includes dress code: remember that the prosecutor even thought that Vinny was one of the defendants. How you present yourself is generally important; in an environment like this, as, yes, an outsider, you are expected to respect the where and what you are. Haller says that the way Vinny is dressing is disrespecting him and the court. He means it.

The problem with his sleeping and being able to sleep in jail. What they are saying is in the big city its loud noises all night long. Where in the country, its quite most of the night. So when a loud noise youre not familiar with, wakes you up.
Its like people that live near railroad tracks. When you 1st move in, it wakes you up every time, but after a while you get used to it and sleep through.
Its the same with Californians and earthquakes. We get them a lot, but dont really wake up or make notice of it unless buildings are falling.

    1. Billy said twice, “I shot the clerk.”
    2. Every lawyer in the country knows how to dress for court, except of course, Vinny. It’s not a do your own thing kind of thing.
    3. No, the witnesses weren’t “in on it”. Given the similarity of cars and suspects and the close timing they simply were mistaken.
    4. Vinny already knew that the tire marks couldn’t have come from Billy’s car. That’s why he asked the sheriff to check out the arrests or two guys in a Tempest. He needed Lisa to say it in open court.
    5. Marisa Tomei won the Best Supporting Actress for her role.

The thing about a lot of courtrooms is they're run as mini kingdoms and some judges are indeed tyrannical. They have a ridiculous amount of discretion that is incredibly petty. A lot of lawyers learn certain things about certain judges so that they present in a way that'll be favorable. It's pretty messed up. Some of the tales from court observers are kind of harrowing.

Yeah, but Vinny's performance, at this point, makes me _wonder_ about the quality of that _law_ school. I mean, in every criminal trial, there's a _defendant,_ and one of the first things they make it a point to establish is whether that defendant please _guilty_ or _not_ guilty. This becomes clear in _every_ legal drama and this is what the judge was _asking._
Now Vinny's clients are on trial for something they didn't _do,_ so how they _plead_ is "not guilty." How come Vinny doesn't _know_ this?

I have long been a fan of courthouse dramas. Must have read each of the Perry Mason novels by lawyer Erle Stanley Gardner dozens of times (totally different than either the Raymond Burr tv show or the recent HBO series). Plus Law & Order and so on. The concept of discovery where each side has to show the other all the evidence, no surprises, had been around for awhile by the time this movie was made, but when Lisa pointed that out 1)my jaw dropped and 2)I immediately thought to myself "of course." (And obviously surprised most of the audience at the time.)
In these older stories, much of the drama centered around one side or the other playing really nasty tricks on the other - like hiding an essential witness under "protective custody" or holding back vital evidence, not even letting the other side know about this, not to mention interviews of these witnesses. (This worked for both the defense and prosecution, although with the prosecution having available much greater funds, often led to flagrant miscarriages of justice for the defendant(s).)

Yes, twice he said, "I shot the clerk." He was saying it as a question, but being on the record, it comes off as a declarative statement, i.e., a confession. In the perfect twist, you proved the poor reliability of witness testimony. You'd just seen those exact events, yet couldnt remember if it really happened. There was no coverup. It does point out the single-minded focus the system functions under, though. This case shows just how if a few key facts had not been discovered, and wouldnt have in most cases, a total miscarriage of justice would have occurred. Scary to think how often that has happened.

Hate to tell you this but the reality is that no matter who it is or why there are always people protesting for people on death row. The only connection was that they were facing the death penalty.

Breakfast...when you sleep you are fasting, no intake of food or liquid. The first meal of the day/night after sleeping is when you Break the Fast...Breakfast.

You don’t have to make sense of what’s happening. Just watch the movie and let the story unfold…it will all make sense at the end.
