I don't believe in diets or hard core restrictions, because I believe humans don't yet fully understand the workings of our incredible bodies :) I believe that fresh fruits and vegetables are an amazing way to feed our bodies with nutrients for health. I avoid processed foods - except when I am at a party or with friends. Then I will eat anything in moderation and enjoy the company. I believe that being grateful, laughing, and having fun while you eat is probably more important than anything. @@ana419 You can have great teeth with no restriction on what you want to eat or drink. Don't try to control oral health by giving up certain foods or drinks. The secret lies in controlling your patterns of eating and drinking. Eat and drink coffee, lemons or mineral water - but only at mealtimes. Then end the meal with a tiny amount of xylitol/Zellies mints (Amazon). This way, the damage done by the acidity is immediately reversed. In this reversal - you rebuild enamel and regrow any lost strength ( often making teeth stronger than before). After the meal, stop eating and drinking anything ( even sips of water or tiny snacks) for 1-2 hours. This allows protective bacteria to develop and act as a shield over your teeth - to prevent future enamel damage.

I am currently 32 and already having problems with my receding gums and black triangles. I am feeling very hopeless/devastated because my dentists told me that there is no chance to grow back my gums. Ever since i stopped eating refined sugar (cakes, cookies, donuts, chocolate bars, soda pop, etc), i have no cavities found at my dental checkups. Now I still eat plenty of fruit, (and drink non alcoholic beer instead of soda), but for some reason fruit does not give me cavities.

I eat Xylitol every day and I use my complete mouth care system regularly twice a day. Oral health is about consistency and understanding that it is your own saliva that heals your teeth and whitens them. By the way I’m not afraid to drink red wine and coffee is perhaps my favorite drink of all.

My teeth suddenly started getting worse in the past couple years and I am terrified of the Dentist because I have had SO many disastrous events including a dentist that "accidentally: Injected Novocain into my salivary gland destroying it permanently.. of course I suffer from chronic dry mouth... I gave ups Soda drinks after that but substituted with sparkling water with no sugar... watching this has me freaked out because I love sparkling water!!!
You don't have to "give up" anything your love - just eat and drink at mealtimes, end with some Zellies/xylitol and then stop eating and drinking (anything and everything - even flat water) for 1-2 hours afterward. Good information! Before I watched this video (today), I have eaten and love eating pineapple with yogurt and banana with cottage cheese. I eat them usually at night. I didn’t really know these food were that good for your teeth, but everytime I eat them I feel better (even when I am allergic to pineapple, but I have no problem with the combination).
The chemistry of food pairing is new but may help us understand more about the best way to enjoy meals for improved nutrition. Hi Dr. Ellie. Does vegan cheese and dairy made from either coconut or soy have a similar effect to alkalize the mouth like cow's dairy? We are mostly vegan in our household and I have a dairy allergy.
I remember you discussing once the power of pineapple and unsweetened yogurt and the synergistic effect it has on the human body when healing from wounds. When my mom had a knee replaced I told her to eat pineapple and yogurt together, and I think it benefited her. What does one have to lose when eating healthy foods anyway.
You have a great memory! Yes. I learned that in 1970 in a dental office in Switzerland. Today we realize yogurt has a probiotic value and pineapple has bromelain, vitamin A,K, and C which all benefit skin and bone healing.

For those who want to avoid the sugars in some of the sugariest fruits like bananas, mangos, and pineapples, other foods mentioned in this episode (and similar foods) also contain natural digestive enzymes with far less starch/sugar: avocados, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and ginger.
The only caveat to this is an individual with awful oral health - someone with thick anaerobic plaque deposits. Aggressive anaerobic plaque bacteria can develop within the inner layers of plaque - in the areas adjacent to the tooth surface. These anaerobic bacteria have the ability to ferment milk and create acids that damage the tooth surface and open an entrance for caries to begin. This is a problem that can develop on the teeth of infants when their newly erupted dentition becomes infected by their mother's bad plaque bacteria . The result is that these anaerobic bacteria break down milk in the infant diet and cause tremendous damage known as Early Childhood Caries (ECC) We have an epidemic of this totally preventable problem today in the US and around the world. It would not occur if the Mothers used xylitol during pregnancy and/or wiped the infant teeth with some xylitol granules each day. Instead Mothers are told not to nurse their babies after teeth erupt - which is obviously not the best solution to the problem.
@dr.elliephillips my dentist is telling me that my 7 year old has two adult molars that are demineralized. He says I need to see a pediatric dentist to get a consult but that usually it’s recommended to drill out that soft area and filling them… Do you have any thoughts…?

We are not on a mission to kill bacteria - and I am not entirely sure about the action of green tea on strep mutans - and I worry that it may damage the protein protective layer - necessary for oral health. I would drink tea at meals - but then stop - and do not eat or drink anything between meals.
Dr. Ellie, How close are we to regrowing our natural teeth from stem cells? What is your opinion on the safety and durability of implants? My concern is that they are unremovable, and can become infectious. Longevity is becoming centenarian and bone mass decreases with age, which could cause shifts, dislodgement and pain. There is the famous case of Dick Van Dyke. Your opinion on this would be very valuable.

surprised to hear about cheese. I would think that cheese is acidic. Also, good to hear about berries, that they contain xylitol. Also interesting to hear about fermented foods. We eat them regularly, but they are also acidic. So there are good acidic foods and bad acidic foods ;-)
I presume the idea is to eat 1-3 meals a day, finish them with the right food and/or xylitol mints/crystals, and then not snack except at special occasions. Then the total amount of time the teeth are exposed to the acids is quite limited, and the nutrients are present for continual repair the other 21+ hours a day one is not eating.
Hi Ellie, there’s 2 different types of xylitol that I know of, one from birch and one from corn. Do both have the same effect and properties or is one better? Much harder and expensive to find the birch than the corn xylitol. Please advise. Thanks
I want to add something that may be very helpful. I have small teeth and I think thinner than usual enamel. The ends of my front upper teeth are particularly thin and translucent. I was warned some 20 yrs ago that this may be a problem. Separate to this I was chewing gum after every meal or drink as I had a grinding problem & wanted my teeth to have something to grind on. I even chewed before sleeping , to release tension ( I'm sure gum isn't a good thing as contains plastics I'm told). However, I don't and never have had cavities or gum disease. I ate everything ( not sodas though). I tend to brush teeth after meals if at home . I had deep crevices of my molar surfaces and allowed 2 teeth to have fillings in the 80s which I regret but knew no better then. Long and short of it , I was using sugar free gum in a way similar to Xylitol. It was increasing my saliva and alkalising my mouth regularly. By default rather than by intention. I used to use flouride rinse twice a day too, but I stopped 2 years back. We will see if that makes a difference !!
Dr. Berg says that we should only sip during meal times or to wash something that may be stuck down. He says to wait 30minutes to drink before and after. Do you think there is a method to work in this protocol with what you have said? His reason is that if you want to draw out the maximum amount of nutrients from say beef or another healthy food, you need to not water down your stomach acid.
At night our saliva stops flowing and this leaves our teeth and gums at risk for damage and disease while we are sleeping. The kind of care we provide our mouth before sleeping makes a big difference to our oral health. The only time I have recommended salt water rinses was to reduce inflammation and swelling around wisdom teeth. If this salt rinse is working for you - it certainly should not be a problem.
She’s said before that’s ok. But I’ve heard from other sources that implants create a strong electric charge in the mouth, much the same as a battery (the acid in the mouth and metal). This can cause systemic body problems. Implants also increase bite/jaw issues because it can make you unknowingly bite harder. But if you’re already missing a tooth, an implant may be ok. It will save your jawbone from receding, which would make you look different and cause other teeth to become loose.

Nooooooooo!! My next video is going to tell you how ineffective a straw is. It was a ridiculous concept someone came up with soon after artificial tooth whitening was introduced .....and it does not work. It simply directs the acidity around your molar teeth and this will erode your fillings and back teeth fast. Instead..... Eat and drink normally (not through a straw - just sip and savor) at mealtimes. Then end your meal with a tooth-protective food or Zellies mint. Then do not eat, drink or sip anything - not even regular water - for 1-2 hours as it will dilute your saliva and diminish its healing power. Meal-time acidity followed by time to repair is like taking your teeth to the gym......they will demineralize but then remineralize and be composed of younger, stronger and healthier enamel. We work out our muscles to make them break down and then repair stronger. Our skeleton does this naturally every day as well.....it's part of Nature's amazing process.

U sure if pineapple is acidic or not but doesn't matter as she's recommending eating it (with yogurt) at beginning of meals. The key with acidic foods, as far as relates to the mouth anyway) is how you end the meal. And she recommends ending meals with mouth friendly foods like strawberry or raspberry or whole milk or cheese or zellie mint - some source of zylitol which will change any acidity in the mouth after eating and drinking to an alkaline pH. The point of the pineapple isn't its pH but that it's high in bromelain which will help heal bone, skin, gums.
@@patriciao5239 Well obviously, you need a non acidic(alkaline) type of enviroment for your mouth at the end of your meal hence xylitol, drinking milk at the end, cleaning your mouth with coconut oil..Everyone knows this. Pineapple is not what you need though. its very acidic actually. So no you dont need Pineapple, subsitute for another fruit or do it thats your choice.

There are no restrictions - enjoy whatever is your fancy. Simply drink at mealtimes and end every meal with a tooth-protective food or some xylitol/ Zellies. It is very important to let go of the idea that food is bad because it is acidic. Acidity is only bad if you sip and snack acidic things between meals. Keep eating and drinking to mealtimes and then stop. Stop drinking anything - even water - for 1-2 hours between meals to let your healthy biofilm develop and give your saliva time to heal your teeth and gums.
I presume whole milk is OK because the lactose isn't broken down by bacteria in the mouth. As far as I know, lactose that's broken down in the stomach yields glucose and galactose, the latter of which is as hard on the liver as fructose. Nevertheless, I am glad to hear that an unsweetened drink made of half-and-half and/or heavy cream is OK for oral health.
A straw is useless and will only redirect the liquid to damage your back molar teeth. I have no idea who came up with this idea - because it has been tested and failed miserably. Don't trust a straw. Better to keep foods and drinks to mealtimes and then end the meal with something that is tooth-protective. Zellies mints (Amazon) are protective - and they also feed the good bacteria in your mouth. This is how you can eat and drink whatever you like at meals - no restrictions - enjoy sparkling water - but then end with Zellies and then do not eat or drink afterward. I hope this makes sense. It's also a lot more fun and you don't have to worry about straws - such a silly concept :)

Question: can we safely consume the core of the pineapple liquefied or pureed in a blender, and mixed with yogurt? Or is it too hard to digest, per otherwise harmful?
Yes, blending is a great idea - and also keep the quantities small - there is no reason to eat so much pineapple you end up with mouth ulcers. When I was, let's just say it, anorexic, and hardly eating for over a year, two of my molars decayed and died. My dentist explained that it was due to the poor quality of my saliva due to lack of nutrition, combined with heavy brushing, which he thought was pushing back my gums. Not just did my gums recede, my hair also started falling out and stopped growing and my nails flaked and didn't grow. Now I understand the importance of maintaining good nutrition and thus good quality saliva. Taking Biotin and calcium supplements helped. But I still have one tooth missing, the other one got a root canal and crown but has since broken.
You may want to rethink taking biotin, if it’s for hair loss. The case references that biotin products quote are shown in misguided ways. For the vast majority of people, biotin doesn’t help regrow hair (only in children with a particular disease).
@@graceg3250 thanks. I don't have hair loss now, but I did when I was anorexic. Taking it now just to make sure I get those B vitamins for my hair & nails. Presently growing out dyed hair.
But the pineapple hurts gum recessed. 😢Makes me sensitive alongside fruit freshly squeezed orange as well. Also Is there an alternative to milk products what works well? I was not flossing for 3 days! But now even though I used xylitol it started to be sensitive again. Dr. Ellie does not recommend water flossers. The forceful jet can damage the fine hair-like fibers of gums as they are trying to regrow, and also the jet can force pathogenic bacteria down through a gum pocket into the bloodstream.

I am not sure about the non-dairy yogurt - you may want to ask an alternative health provider or the manager of a health store about this. But I really suggest you try to experience the benefits of limiting water-drinking to mealtimes. I live in Texas - and I understand the need to drink water. I measure out water for each day and ensure I consume this volume - but I do so at confined periods of time. Drinking 8-10 ounces at a time and then going for an hour without drinking. The worst thing for teeth is the constant sipping that so many people have become used to - and it is causing sensitivity and enamel weakness. I work with people with chronic dry mouth - and surprisingly they have found this new way of limiting water has helped their mouth "feel" so much healthier. I suggest you give this pattern of eating and drinking a try - but for sure, please stay hydrated :)

Thanks for all you do. I follow your mouth care program with great results. I have a question about gums. Can you grow back gum tissue? Most dentists say you can’t.
There are two reasons that dentists say your gums can't regrow. One is they are trained to believe this, and secondly they are not giving you the advice you need to be successful. Your gums can heal as effectively as a cut on your finger - but healing in the mouth involves your immune system, digestive health (which affects the healing properties of your saliva) and also we need to get new blood vessels to grow into this area (something called angiogenesis). To make all this happen, you need to be using an adequately resilient toothbrush (most dentists suggest a soft brush that will not work) and brushing the gum area above or below your teeth with small circles - to increase blood flow to the gums. This gum massage can stimulate angiogenesis to occur in this area - bringing nutrients to re-grow new gum tissue). Be sure to do this brushing massage on the inside as well as the outside of an affected tooth - even if the gum loss is only on the outside. The blood supply to the palate and lingual areas of teeth (the inside areas) is very profuse and will be able to reach "between" the two areas and help stimulate gum growth on the other side of your tooth. It's important to allow your saliva time to interact with your gums for the healing saliva components to have time to access this area also. Stop sipping and snacking for at least an hour after meals. Also, try to have a good diet that supports your immune system - Omega-3 rich foods, mushrooms, onion, garlic etc. These will improve the health of your saliva and this will help heal your gums.

I guess it began at the time my brother needed painful fillings at the dentist as a child - Later it was those I noticed on my journey through dental school in London in the 1960s. My first job in Switzerland showed me healthy teeth were a reality that anyone could attain. I noticed that it was a simple thing - simply end meals with a "tooth protective food" and do not snack or sip between meals. I am curious about the fermented foods. Fermented foods are lacto-fermented by placing them in a highly acidic brine at a pH of 6.5 or less. If the extracellular environment is highly acidic, wouldn't the foods also provide the mouth that same acidic affect?
There is no restriction or need to avoid acidic foods. Many healthy and wonderful health-promoting foods are acidic. This is why I refuse to worry about specific foods or try to limit people's diets. The key is to enjoy any foods or drinks at mealtimes. Then, to end the meal with a tooth-protective food. Xylitol / Zellies mints are simply a very convenient tooth-protective food. We need to focus on patterns of eating and drinking for oral health. This way any "acidic" foods are captured within the meal-time - as we end with something non-acidic and tooth-beneficial. it's all about this timing and patterning. Beyond this, the secret to success is to NOT eat or drink for 1-2 hours between meals. This allows beneficial saliva in our mouth to heal and nurture the oral microbiome, put minerals back into teeth etc. Many people have a habit of sipping water (or other drinks or snacking) which dilutes the healing saliva and changes its beneficial properties. This concept of ending meals with a tooth protective food is very liberating as it allows us all to live without fear of what we are eating (for our teeth). Yes, I am in favor of healthy eating but many healthy foods are acidic and so this would become complicated and it doesn't have to be. The other benefit is that my message will also work for someone on a less healthy diet - so they can begin on a new path to health more easily. Thanks so much for your interest.
I never recommend sodium bicarbonate because it is such a good "cleaner" it strips teeth of a special protective protein layer and leaves their surface open to damage and sensitivity. Often this can progress to gum recession and even tooth loss. Peroxide and baking soda are not good for oral health.
The biggest change to tooth staining I saw was when I switched to decaf coffee. I drink the Lavazza type where they use CO2 so it's not full of chemicals. I read that decaf is less acidic than normal coffee. I already eat a low carb diet anyway but that one change had a dramatic effect.
I'm glad this change worked for you, but generally I do not teach people to worry about what they eat or drink. You can have wonderful teeth without any restriction in your diet - and I like this idea :) The only restriction is to eat and drink at meal times - and end a meal with a small amount of xylitol/a couple of Zellies mints ( Amazon). After xylitol it is best not to eat or drink anything for 1-2 hours - which allows the xylitol to feed good bacteria in your mouth. The color of teeth and most so-called yellowing or staining, is created by improper surface texture of teeth. My guess is that you take some time with your coffee and yes, maybe the decaf was less acidic. Again, for others, I reiterate, that it is NOT necessary to worry about what you are eating or drinking - so long as you end meals with a tiny amount of xylitol or other tooth-protective food ( like raspberries or strawberries or cheese). The acidity followed by remineralization is actually beneficial for our teeth.

My teeth suddenly started getting worse in the past couple years and I am terrified of the Dentist because I have had SO many disastrous events including a dentist that "accidentally: Injected Novocain into my salivary gland destroying it permanently.. of course I suffer from chronic dry mouth... Before I watched this video (today), I have eaten and love eating pineapple with yogurt and banana with cottage cheese. I eat them usually at night.
I didn’t really know these food were that good for your teeth, but everytime I eat them I feel better (even when I am allergic to pineapple, but I have no problem with the combination).

I remember you discussing once the power of pineapple and unsweetened yogurt and the synergistic effect it has on the human body when healing from wounds. When my mom had a knee replaced I told her to eat pineapple and yogurt together, and I think it benefited her. What does one have to lose when eating healthy foods anyway.
You have a great memory! Yes. I learned that in 1970 in a dental office in Switzerland. Today we realize yogurt has a probiotic value and pineapple has bromelain, vitamin A,K, and C which all benefit skin and bone healing.

I always assumed milk was acidic. I was pleasantly surprised to read that it is basically neutral like water. I grew up only drinking water and milk.
The only caveat to this is an individual with awful oral health - someone with thick anaerobic plaque deposits.
Aggressive anaerobic plaque bacteria can develop within the inner layers of plaque - in the areas adjacent to the tooth surface.
These anaerobic bacteria have the ability to ferment milk and create acids that damage the tooth surface and open an entrance for caries to begin.
This is a problem that can develop on the teeth of infants when their newly erupted dentition becomes infected by their mother's bad plaque bacteria .
The result is that these anaerobic bacteria break down milk in the infant diet and cause tremendous damage known as Early Childhood Caries (ECC)
We have an epidemic of this totally preventable problem today in the US and around the world.
It would not occur if the Mothers used xylitol during pregnancy and/or wiped the infant teeth with some xylitol granules each day.
Instead Mothers are told not to nurse their babies after teeth erupt - which is obviously not the best solution to the problem.

Well now, here I am eating Pineapple and Yoghurt together, like its going out of fashion. Lucky I live in the tropics where they grow! Townsville, Queensland.
Ma'am how to use xylitol granule because in my case it doesn't show any results from past 1 months
surprised to hear about cheese. I would think that cheese is acidic. Also, good to hear about berries, that they contain xylitol. Also interesting to hear about fermented foods. We eat them regularly, but they are also acidic. So there are good acidic foods and bad acidic foods ;-)
I presume the idea is to eat 1-3 meals a day, finish them with the right food and/or xylitol mints/crystals, and then not snack except at special occasions. Then the total amount of time the teeth are exposed to the acids is quite limited, and the nutrients are present for continual repair the other 21+ hours a day one is not eating.
Eat a bit of cheddar after a meal and you can almost feel it benefitting your mouth.

I have small teeth and I think thinner than usual enamel. The ends of my front upper teeth are particularly thin and translucent.
I was warned some 20 yrs ago that this may be a problem.
Separate to this I was chewing gum after every meal or drink as I had a grinding problem & wanted my teeth to have something to grind on. I even chewed before sleeping , to release tension ( I'm sure gum isn't a good thing as contains plastics I'm told).
However, I don't and never have had cavities or gum disease.
I ate everything ( not sodas though). I tend to brush teeth after meals if at home .
I had deep crevices of my molar surfaces and allowed 2 teeth to have fillings in the 80s which I regret but knew no better then.
Long and short of it , I was using sugar free gum in a way similar to Xylitol. It was increasing my saliva and alkalising my mouth regularly.
By default rather than by intention.
I used to use flouride rinse twice a day too, but I stopped 2 years back. We will see if that makes a difference !!
Does the benefits of dairy and xylitol fruits continue after brushing our teeth?
@4:28 wouldn't whole milk contain lactose and other sugars that would be bad for teeth? if anything heavy cream or butter would be better no?
Dr. Berg says that we should only sip during meal times or to wash something that may be stuck down. He says to wait 30minutes to drink before and after. Do you think there is a method to work in this protocol with what you have said? His reason is that if you want to draw out the maximum amount of nutrients from say beef or another healthy food, you need to not water down your stomach acid.

The only time I have recommended salt water rinses was to reduce inflammation and swelling around wisdom teeth.

She’s said before that’s ok. But I’ve heard from other sources that implants create a strong electric charge in the mouth, much the same as a battery (the acid in the mouth and metal). This can cause systemic body problems. Implants also increase bite/jaw issues because it can make you unknowingly bite harder. But if you’re already missing a tooth, an implant may be ok. It will save your jawbone from receding, which would make you look different and cause other teeth to become loose.

It was a ridiculous concept someone came up with soon after artificial tooth whitening was introduced .....and it does not work.
It simply directs the acidity around your molar teeth and this will erode your fillings and back teeth fast.
Instead.....
Eat and drink normally (not through a straw - just sip and savor) at mealtimes.
Then end your meal with a tooth-protective food or Zellies mint.
Then do not eat, drink or sip anything - not even regular water - for 1-2 hours as it will dilute your saliva and diminish its healing power.
Meal-time acidity followed by time to repair is like taking your teeth to the gym......they will demineralize but then remineralize and be composed of younger, stronger and healthier enamel. We work out our muscles to make them break down and then repair stronger. Our skeleton does this naturally every day as well.....it's part of Nature's amazing process.

U sure if pineapple is acidic or not but doesn't matter as she's recommending eating it (with yogurt) at beginning of meals. The key with acidic foods, as far as relates to the mouth anyway) is how you end the meal. And she recommends ending meals with mouth friendly foods like strawberry or raspberry or whole milk or cheese or zellie mint - some source of zylitol which will change any acidity in the mouth after eating and drinking to an alkaline pH.
The point of the pineapple isn't its pH but that it's high in bromelain which will help heal bone, skin, gums.
@@patriciao5239 Well obviously, you need a non acidic(alkaline) type of enviroment for your mouth at the end of your meal hence xylitol, drinking milk at the end, cleaning your mouth with coconut oil..Everyone knows this. Pineapple is not what you need though. its very acidic actually. So no you dont need Pineapple, subsitute for another fruit or do it thats your choice.

Green tea it's good for gums also.
There are no restrictions - enjoy whatever is your fancy.
Simply drink at mealtimes and end every meal with a tooth-protective food or some xylitol/ Zellies.
It is very important to let go of the idea that food is bad because it is acidic.
Acidity is only bad if you sip and snack acidic things between meals.
Keep eating and drinking to mealtimes and then stop.
Stop drinking anything - even water - for 1-2 hours between meals to let your healthy biofilm develop and give your saliva time to heal your teeth and gums.
I presume whole milk is OK because the lactose isn't broken down by bacteria in the mouth. As far as I know, lactose that's broken down in the stomach yields glucose and galactose, the latter of which is as hard on the liver as fructose. Nevertheless, I am glad to hear that an unsweetened drink made of half-and-half and/or heavy cream is OK for oral health.
I love sparkling water, what if one uses a straw to minimize contact with the teeth?
A straw is useless and will only redirect the liquid to damage your back molar teeth.
I have no idea who came up with this idea - because it has been tested and failed miserably.
Don't trust a straw.
Better to keep foods and drinks to mealtimes and then end the meal with something that is tooth-protective.
Zellies mints (Amazon) are protective - and they also feed the good bacteria in your mouth.
This is how you can eat and drink whatever you like at meals - no restrictions - enjoy sparkling water - but then end with Zellies and then do not eat or drink afterward.
I hope this makes sense. It's also a lot more fun and you don't have to worry about straws - such a silly concept :)

Question: can we safely consume the core of the pineapple liquefied or pureed in a blender, and mixed with yogurt? Or is it too hard to digest, per otherwise harmful?
Yes, blending is a great idea - and also keep the quantities small - there is no reason to eat so much pineapple you end up with mouth ulcers.
I find getting people to be moderate when it comes to most things is the real challenge - LOL

When I was, let's just say it, anorexic, and hardly eating for over a year, two of my molars decayed and died. My dentist explained that it was due to the poor quality of my saliva due to lack of nutrition, combined with heavy brushing, which he thought was pushing back my gums. Not just did my gums recede, my hair also started falling out and stopped growing and my nails flaked and didn't grow. Now I understand the importance of maintaining good nutrition and thus good quality saliva. Taking Biotin and calcium supplements helped. But I still have one tooth missing, the other one got a root canal and crown but has since broken.
You may want to rethink taking biotin, if it’s for hair loss. The case references that biotin products quote are shown in misguided ways. For the vast majority of people, biotin doesn’t help regrow hair (only in children with a particular disease).

But the pineapple hurts gum recessed. 😢Makes me sensitive alongside fruit freshly squeezed orange as well. Also Is there an alternative to milk products what works well? I was not flossing for 3 days! But now even though I used xylitol it started to be sensitive again. Dr. Ellie does not recommend water flossers. The forceful jet can damage the fine hair-like fibers of gums as they are trying to regrow, and also the jet can force pathogenic bacteria down through a gum pocket into the bloodstream.

You can swallow it. Yes, xylitol is good for the gut; it forms butyrate, which is a prebiotic for your beneficial bacteria.

I would think that nondairy yogurt doesn’t have the probiotic effect
I am not sure about the non-dairy yogurt - you may want to ask an alternative health provider or the manager of a health store about this.
But I really suggest you try to experience the benefits of limiting water-drinking to mealtimes.
I live in Texas - and I understand the need to drink water.
I measure out water for each day and ensure I consume this volume - but I do so at confined periods of time.
Drinking 8-10 ounces at a time and then going for an hour without drinking.
The worst thing for teeth is the constant sipping that so many people have become used to - and it is causing sensitivity and enamel weakness.
I work with people with chronic dry mouth - and surprisingly they have found this new way of limiting water has helped their mouth "feel" so much healthier.
I suggest you give this pattern of eating and drinking a try - but for sure, please stay hydrated :)

Thanks for all you do. I follow your mouth care program with great results. I have a question about gums. Can you grow back gum tissue? Most dentists say you can’t.
There are two reasons that dentists say your gums can't regrow. One is they are trained to believe this, and secondly they are not giving you the advice you need to be successful.
Your gums can heal as effectively as a cut on your finger - but healing in the mouth involves your immune system, digestive health (which affects the healing properties of your saliva) and also we need to get new blood vessels to grow into this area (something called angiogenesis).
To make all this happen, you need to be using an adequately resilient toothbrush (most dentists suggest a soft brush that will not work) and brushing the gum area above or below your teeth with small circles - to increase blood flow to the gums. This gum massage can stimulate angiogenesis to occur in this area - bringing nutrients to re-grow new gum tissue). Be sure to do this brushing massage on the inside as well as the outside of an affected tooth - even if the gum loss is only on the outside. The blood supply to the palate and lingual areas of teeth (the inside areas) is very profuse and will be able to reach "between" the two areas and help stimulate gum growth on the other side of your tooth. It's important to allow your saliva time to interact with your gums for the healing saliva components to have time to access this area also. Stop sipping and snacking for at least an hour after meals. Also, try to have a good diet that supports your immune system - Omega-3 rich foods, mushrooms, onion, garlic etc. These will improve the health of your saliva and this will help heal your gums.

Later it was those I noticed on my journey through dental school in London in the 1960s.
My first job in Switzerland showed me healthy teeth were a reality that anyone could attain.
I noticed that it was a simple thing - simply end meals with a "tooth protective food" and do not snack or sip between meals.
I took this message to share with people in the UK during the 1970s and saw with my own eyes how this message ( and a specific oral care program) could work for children and adults. So easy and (if you use xylitol ) delicious!

Dr. Ellie says in numerous places to never use Listerine alone all by itself or end with it. It will leave the mouth very acidic if used alone.

Yes - xylitol sourced from corn works exactly the same as xylitol sourced from birch; there is no difference.
I am curious about the fermented foods. Fermented foods are lacto-fermented by placing them in a highly acidic brine at a pH of 6.5 or less. If the extracellular environment is highly acidic, wouldn't the foods also provide the mouth that same acidic affect?
There is no restriction or need to avoid acidic foods.
Many healthy and wonderful health-promoting foods are acidic.
This is why I refuse to worry about specific foods or try to limit people's diets.
The key is to enjoy any foods or drinks at mealtimes.
Then, to end the meal with a tooth-protective food.
Xylitol / Zellies mints are simply a very convenient tooth-protective food.
We need to focus on patterns of eating and drinking for oral health. This way any "acidic" foods are captured within the meal-time - as we end with something non-acidic and tooth-beneficial. it's all about this timing and patterning.
Beyond this, the secret to success is to NOT eat or drink for 1-2 hours between meals.
This allows beneficial saliva in our mouth to heal and nurture the oral microbiome, put minerals back into teeth etc.
Many people have a habit of sipping water (or other drinks or snacking) which dilutes the healing saliva and changes its beneficial properties.
This concept of ending meals with a tooth protective food is very liberating as it allows us all to live without fear of what we are eating (for our teeth).
Yes, I am in favor of healthy eating but many healthy foods are acidic and so this would become complicated and it doesn't have to be.
The other benefit is that my message will also work for someone on a less healthy diet - so they can begin on a new path to health more easily.

What about sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)? Can it be used for rinsing the mouth to reduce acidity atfter meals?
I never recommend sodium bicarbonate because it is such a good "cleaner" it strips teeth of a special protective protein layer and leaves their surface open to damage and sensitivity. Often this can progress to gum recession and even tooth loss. Peroxide and baking soda are not good for oral health.
The biggest change to tooth staining I saw was when I switched to decaf coffee. I drink the Lavazza type where they use CO2 so it's not full of chemicals. I read that decaf is less acidic than normal coffee. I already eat a low carb diet anyway but that one change had a dramatic effect.
I'm glad this change worked for you, but generally I do not teach people to worry about what they eat or drink.
You can have wonderful teeth without any restriction in your diet - and I like this idea :)
The only restriction is to eat and drink at meal times - and end a meal with a small amount of xylitol/a couple of Zellies mints ( Amazon).
After xylitol it is best not to eat or drink anything for 1-2 hours - which allows the xylitol to feed good bacteria in your mouth.
The color of teeth and most so-called yellowing or staining, is created by improper surface texture of teeth.
My guess is that you take some time with your coffee and yes, maybe the decaf was less acidic.
Again, for others, I reiterate, that it is NOT necessary to worry about what you are eating or drinking - so long as you end meals with a tiny amount of xylitol or other tooth-protective food ( like raspberries or strawberries or cheese). The acidity followed by remineralization is actually beneficial for our teeth.

With your cavities, it would be worth your time to test xylitol and see if you like your results.
