I need to rewatch X-Men first class. Also I'm hoping the Dark Phoenix movie ends up being amazing. (As it's probable the big finale of the Fox X-men movies) 19 years guys....wow.
i didnt like cartoon dark phoenix i didnt like x men last stand dark phoenix and i sure didnt like any comic with dark phoenix. Seeing the movie being titled dark phoenix i simply feel a great swell of pity for the poor soul who has to write that script. but provided the movie gives some real in depth characterization for jean and her lover boy before they go ape shit with their porn drama maybe it can be saved. or perhaps they will surprise us with a jean that fully controls her ability and matures.
Great analysis! I never noticed that the coin doesn’t move in that opening scene. I love X-Men: First Class and think Days of Future Past is even better. I actually think the young cast is better than the old. An example of a perfect prequel for television is Better Call Saul (prequel to Breaking Bad). It’s an excellent show and it nails everything mentioned in this video. I would HIGHLY recommend it because I know not many people watch it.
First Class is just an all around great superhero TEAM movie. Honestly, when the first images came out it looked dreadful, then the first trailer came and it started to pique my interest. It's still rife with flaws, but I'd say it's the best X-Men team movie we have.
YES. IT. IS. People don't give First Class enough credit for what it actually was and Matt Vaughn did a fantastic job with this film. The plot, the casting, the pacing and especially the score.
Excellent video man! You've nailed all the points. I've been a big fan of this movie for so long lol. I just wanted to mention how difficult was it to retcon the series as a whole, and I don't think prequels to the original X-Men Trilogy could exist without fucking up the timeline. Eg: In X-Men (2000), Charles mentions that Magneto helped him build Cerebro, which is not the case in First Class (Hank builds it), and definitely couldn't have been. Also Emma Frost already appears in Origins Wolverine as a younger character. I don't want to make a conclusion or a point, just throwing it out there lol
KDCloudy my theory has always been that DOFP created a third timeline, in which some events happened as they did. But, X3 did not, thus why Jean, Charles and Scott are still alive at the end.
I am a marvel fanboy but films like this and Logan just make me feel things. And not just a little but throughout the movies. I can only think of four instances where I felt that in the 20 marvel films: mrs quills death, Yondu’s death, Groot and captain America waking up after 70 years
Well done Roby! Many prequels seem to forget that a characters motivations and progression are essential. Most prequels only focus on capturing the style of the original and forget to add their own take.
X-Men First Class is definitely in the upper tier of superhero movies. Not quite as good as TDK or Logan, but definitely up there, perhaps just a shade behind the first Avengers
I really loved this movie too. Usually superhero movies are just a one-time watch but I have re-watched it soooo many times. Everything about is really good, especially the music! And I liked how you showed the difference of a film that shows why versus a film that shows how. Edit: my grammar sucks sorry.
I think with sequels it becomes important to show just the establishment of core ideals that are part of the characters in the movies that we already know; other than that I am cool with showing versions that are different from the originals.
The title of "Fantastic Beasts" is actually just an excuse for JK Rowling to tell the tale of Dumbledore and Grindelwald and the first great wizarding war
I would say it's damn good, but it is somewhat held back by the sequences with the younger students. They just dragged out the pacing and plot a bit and the characters were just so dull and thin. Furthermore, they weren't really relevant to the overall the story and they should have been cut during the scripting stage. Even the most heavily featured one (Havok) had less than ten minutes of screentime. But still, a damn good film, and it's hard to think of a prequel film that is as effective as First Class.
Oh, boy - you made me want to rewatch this film again, which I really do not like - I love the characters but the story not so much ... but hey, now I want to give it another chance! :-D
I rewatched my library's copy of X-Men First Class so many times, I should have just bought it from them. To me, it's a James Bond film with mutant superpowers in place of gadgets. Thank you for explaining why I loved it so much. Oh and I've had the same problem with explaining to people why Xavier's character arc in this film makes sense.
The "Why"-question is actually applicable to every good character-based movie: Always show _why_ a character makes the choices he makes, don't just show him making them.
Never watched this one back when it came out cuz I figured it might be crap. Looks like I was wrong and I will def watch! Can’t wait! I loved days of future past and first two X movies . Specially X2!
I wouldn't say it's trash - it made ... interesting ... choices about some characters ;-) , but it's worth to see Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth - he is amazing! But don't worry about continuity too much! :-D
Hi, big fan of your essays. I just have a question: I’m still a little lost on the how and why, any chance you could explain it? Because, and this is my own opinion, I feel like a prequel to some extent answers (or should of it seeks to be good) both, or am I conflating the two? Please clarify
I plan on rewatching all the X-Men movies pretty soon here. I remember liking First Class but I never super loved it or anything. Then again it's been a while since I watched it.
Yes yes it is ur right, gotta say though I keep forgetting about solo seen every other Star Wars film since force awakens opening night and still haven't seen this one cuz I forgot
A very good argument on your part sir. Well played. I think the new Planet of the Apes movies are the perfect trilogy and they happen to be sequels. Liked the video. Your voice is regal. Best day & Best wishes to you & yours.
Fantastic video! And some great ideas to think on in regards to prequels. First Class is one of my favorite movies of all time just because of how fun and unique it is, it’s a shame that this wasn’t a direct reboot, because I think using these movies to fix the old X-Men franchise has caused more harm than good, but that’s just my opinion.
Just watched this movie. I thought I had seen it before since I distinctly remember watching Days of Future Past but I guess I skipped this. Didn’t really keep track of the X-Men movies but recent events in the MCU made me wanna go back and watch this era of X-men films.
I love mathew vaughn this version is so colorful and had something i wanted to see in the older X men movies wich is camp, this feels like a comic book movie its fun yet serious too i think you need both in a superhero film unless tour talking about batman or something like that
I agree: Solo was a good movie. If it had doubled down on the crime aspect maybe it would have been a great movie. Been a further departure from other films set in that galaxy far, far away. It comes across like a really good fan-film (same way I feel about the sequels to Silence of the Lambs) :/
I agree with that. But what about Days of Future Past? To me, that's one of the greatest sequels, the greatest prequel, a great sci-fi and the greatest CBM ever made.
Thats ok man, I liked Solo too lol. Also besides Logan, First Class is probably the best Xmen movie. I call Days of Future Past pretty even up there though, can't decide between the two. Either way, it's super underrated!! First Class feels strangely intellectual and emotionally charged. It actually has a purpose and is telling a story that not only explains (as you say "why") But just generally wouls be worthy of telling regardless of its link to Xmen or the other films. Theres stuff in there thats real, Magneto's motivation could be an entire movie in itself, Charles working with the government agents is reminds me of other things and Mystique's issues and insecurities are enough to carry a movie on its own. But its all stylishly fitted into this one awesome piece of cinema, not so thats its crammed full and bloated, but so that it has just enough of every element to tell this story. I dunno man, First Class is awesome, I'll quit my god damn essay now I guess haha
Request: Please adjust sound of the closing theme to match the volume of your voiceover... because it blasted out of my speakers and could potentially wake people up in my house... There is nothing more frustrating than having to adjust volume multiple times in a single video.
I see what you mean and yes is a great movie and very good prequel (maybe the best prequel), but is not perfect because it changes many elements from the original trilogy to work.
I think dc also need to do a prequel of ben affleck batman. With a young ben affleck looking actor, younger jeremy irons, so much more. This version of batman is too old so I think a prequel batman movie without ben, but his younger self can be a great reboot for dceu
Excellent synopsis. I have been telling my friends for a LONGGGGGG time that this movie was a perfect prequel, but he has tunnel vision due to the bad Xmen movies. Its hard to give a fair chance to a movie franchise after it has made some bad movies, people tend to anticipate crap in its subsequent followups.

It made magneto my favorite character in the franchise. The quarter scene is still amazingly well done
"Unfortunately... You killed my Mother." One of my favourite deliveries in a superhero film. So sinister and genuine.
I reckon Magneto is the best Marvel villain on film, including MCU, Xmen and whatever else.
Devon Palmer I know right every time I see that soon I always get goosebumps
@@iamthatroby what about the star wars prequl thre the perfect prequels to frsnchise
James mcavoy killed it as prof x in this movie...
Mcavoy just kills as an actor in general.
Magneto’s Frankenstein’s monster scene if one of my favorite scenes ever. Great video
Love First Class-Loved Fassbender as Magneto and McAvoy as Charles
I'm gonna be sad to see them go.
I need to rewatch X-Men first class. Also I'm hoping the Dark Phoenix movie ends up being amazing. (As it's probable the big finale of the Fox X-men movies) 19 years guys....wow.
Technically, it's been 20 - as they started shooting in 1999.
I'm just gonna say 20 because I like well-rounded numbers
iamthatroby 20 years dose have a better ring to it. keep up the good work Roby, i love videos.
Knight Warrior the plot leaked and my god. Fox needs help

+Mitts & Muffins You mean a confirmed fake plot leak.
Next to Days of Future Days, Logan, X-Men 2, First Class is one of the greatest X-Men movies. Its truly a unique movie.
Lennie Binale why did u put Logan in there. Was a damn good movie.
Berto Clips Its a X-Men movie. So, it deserves to be mentioned.
@@bertoclips7123 Dude, it's literally an X-Men film. A great film doesn't mean it loses it's relation to the attributed franchise.
Deadpool should be on your list, being a part of this franchise.
That thumbnail is equally perfect

I genuinely don't see any flaws in the movie myself, but I really want to know what you thought were it's flaws
I’m not gonna lie, this is probably my favorite X-Men movie to date. It’s just that good.
So happy someone else loves the Frankenstein's monster scene as much as me
dbzyeahh12 I watch it so often lol it’s incredible
I find with this film like lex in smalville every scene erik lenshar was in he stole the show

This movie came out in 2011! Man I feel old.

The Frankenstein's monster scene is amazing
One of the greatest comic book movies of all time.
I love BIONICLE: LEGENDS OF METRU NUI's cameo in this video
*the magneto bar scene with that score is still my fav thing in a movie*
Going to adding that to my questions to myself after watching a prequel, great job man!
I think with sequels it becomes important to show just the establishment of core ideals that are part of the characters in the movies that we already know; other than that I am cool with showing versions that are different from the originals.
Recall when I was watching this thinking maybe the tale between Grindelwald and Dumbledore was similar to this
mechashadow oh goddamn, that would’ve been great. Instead we got whatever the hell Fantastic Beasts was
They are going to expand on it in Fantastic Beasts 2
The title of "Fantastic Beasts" is actually just an excuse for JK Rowling to tell the tale of Dumbledore and Grindelwald and the first great wizarding war

X-Men first class is a heavily underrated movie, better than the whole DCEU, it’d a top 10 MCU movie but gets no love, thank you for this video
What do you think of Better Call Saul?
Great analyses of the movie!
"X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is a Perfect Prequel"
No it isn't. It completely rewrites X-men history.
As does literally every other X-Men related story
No, it simply retconed previous information. It is still a perfect setup to the other films. X-Men: Days of Future Past is what you'd be referring to.
Roby throwing shade at Hollywood degenerates
I agree with that. But what about Days of Future Past? To me, that's one of the greatest sequels, the greatest prequel, a great sci-fi and the greatest CBM ever made.
