@@SMASHEnglish ohh thank you so much! your videos really helped me with the exam! (I watched almost all of them about FCE) I learned lots of useful things and I love the way you explain, keep going!
Some will say no. However I think it depends. Sometimes a phrasal verb is necessary to express an idea (can you think of another way to say "wake up"? I would struggle...). So try to be formal, but don't restrict yourself too much!
Hey Toby! You’re doing such a great job! Thanks a million. I have a question - is it compulsory to have two prompts that agree with my opinion and one that disagrees with my opinion or can I include in my essay three prompts, each of them agrees with my opinion?
I love your videos! They are by far the most informative presented with a good sense of humour! Keep it up! I would be grateful if you could answer my question. Having watched your video, I understood that this a for and against essay. However, I know that students need to write an opinion essay (one-sided whatever you may call it) So, my question is: do students have to determine whether they should write an opinion or a for and against essay? I have a question, though. The question in the introduction-does it actually reflect the problem stated in the rubric? If I read it without knowing the topic I d infer that the essay should be focused on the DISADVANTAGES of having siblings, while the topic per see seems to be a big broader than that, don't you think?
Hi Toby! I'd like to ask you two questions regarding the essay. 1. Should we write our idea on the question paper or the examiner will just be aware of it by reading our essay? 2. Must we leave a gap when we divide our essay into paragraphs? Thank you for your time!!😃
1. Examiner should be aware from reading your essay. Your question paper goes in the bin so anything you write on it will not be seen or marked. 2. Yes! Please do this
Tobby, about the structure that you mentioned, can I use it in all kind of essays? I mean there are times which the writing exam wants you to write about 2 topics and decide which is the best, so what should I do if I come across with that kind of essay?
Good evening Should I start the second and third paragraphs by telling disadvantage or negative effects or I can agree by telling advantages first Thank you teacher 🌼
It depends. If you have two prompts that you think talk about the disadvantages then they should be 2&3. If you have two prompts that you think talk about advantages then they should be 2&3.
Hello Toby ! Could I ask you a quick question , please? My english teacher says that it is significantly better for me to use ,in the contrast paragraph e.g On the other hand and NOT in spite of the above and stuff.... Also, she says that I should only use rhetorical questions only in the introduction and conclusion...What do you think? what do you think would earn more marks when I will write the exam? Thanks a lot
Hey Toby, would you mind answering me a question? Can I switch the order of the prompts to make the paragraphs agree? For example, I use prompt one then my opinion because they agree with each other and then I use the other prompt. Thank you so much!
Yes, that is exactly what you should do if necessary. You do not have to use the prompts in the order written in the question. If you wanted you could start with prompt 3 (your own idea), prompt 1, and finally prompt 2. It's your decision!
Toby, you are simply the best B2 First RUclipsr, ever ❤ (and surely you are talented Musician 👏🏻) Wish you lots of subs, likes, comments and benefits from all of this incredible content you produce for the channel. Hey Toby, I have a question about the structure of this essay. I know it's mostly opinion essay (in which I must agree or disagree with a statement or simply give an opinion on the subject). As far as I know, about the main body I've always used two paragraphs (which means two prompts) to support my idea, and the other one to acknowledge the other side of the argument. As far as youre example is concerned, you only used a paragraph (which is to say a prompt) to support your opinion. Would my way of structuring the essay be wrong?
Hello! I actually think you’re structure is the same as mine! Use two paragraphs that support your opinion and connect them with the not only… but also…. Then your third body paragraph will be disagreeing or presenting the other side. It doesn’t matter whether your conclusion agrees with the two paragraphs presenting one argument or the third paragraph presenting the counter. The important thing is that your opinion given in your conclusion is connected to what you have said prior. Is that clear?
Haha! The C2 essay is very different to the B2 essay. I personally would structure it like this: 1. Introduction. 2. Summary and evaluation of first text. 3. Summary and evaluation of second text. 4. Conclusion with personal opinion. The most important part is clearly summarising the views of each text, and emphasising similarities and differences between them. Sometimes the texts will agree, sometimes they will disagree and this should be evident in your essay. This channel is only focusing on B2 for the moment. Then I will move onto C1, and then finally C2... so don't hold your breath for C2 material 😂
I couldn't follow the logic. Before writing an essay, we choose our inclination towards the subject (agree or disagree). only then we start writing our points. we can contrast the ideas in the paragraphs to highlight that despite other angles we still strongly support our chosen track, but dedicating a separate paragraph for the contrast idea makes me scattered. If I write a whole new paragraph about something that contradicts my inclinations presented beforehand then what I'm agreeing to at all. Isn't in an essay we should strongly disagree or agree on an issue represented?
Thanks for your reply. By saying that, we should include in the contradictory paragraph that (somehow) these contrasting statements exist but are rather feeble. 😅 or should we make them weaker at some point to not deny our pre-chosen track?
how about writing conclusion in this way : As far as i'm concerned......(only writing my opinion) i have exam tomorrow.. thank you in advance for this information.
That's fine. BUT it must be connected in some way to what you said in your 3 body paragraphs. This is why I use the passive modal reporting verb with a concessive clause... it links every aspect of the essay together in the conclusion.
Thank you so much sir... It helped me a lot. Is it ok if the essay has 201 words... my essay always passes 190 words and always bother me... :( :( :( :( :(
@@Nana-nr1pv hello! I respectfully disagree. I think it is a bad idea having learners give their opinions in their introduction, especially at B2 level. ruclips.net/video/6PmhyGSv7fo/видео.htmlsi=dHIr0z1JkBdbA675
@@SMASHEnglish I wish I could add an image . But you can check the student assessment guide from Cambridge online . They mark that your opinion in intro is compulsory
@@Nana-nr1pv I know what you are referring to. This is not an assessment guide but a sample structure for learners to use. This is not mandatory and often creates more problems than it solves. For further clarification that it is not necessary to include your opinion in the introduction check the sample answers in the handbook for teachers. Placing an opinion in the introduction is not a prerequisite for scoring a high mark. Please watch the video I linked above where I explain why.
@@SMASHEnglish well, I would like to have a reference that is proved by Cambridge, unfortunately we cannot depend on someone’s opinion. Honestly, I do agree that many model answers don’t have opinion in introductions, but again, as a student, shouldn’t you rely primarily on an official document?
@@Nana-nr1pv the official document we have is the assessment scale examiners use for writing. I have a video on that here: How Examiners Mark Your B2 First Essay (Cambridge FCE Writing Exam) ruclips.net/video/hlSCFyOWSkg/видео.html
As far as I’m concerned, it isn’t grammatically correct to use 'firstly' without using 'secondly.' This often indicates a mistake in organization, doesn’t it?
In the sample test essay writing part I did in my English class, I agreed in all the three prompts. I didn't give a contrast idea in any of them and my teacher said it was good and gave me 20 points. But now you are saying we must give a contrast idea. I'm confused Who do I have to trust? 😂🤔 Help me pls
Haha trust us both! You don't HAVE to include a contrasting idea. I suggest it as it's an easy way to include concessive clauses and contrasting linking expressions. However it is certainly not mandatory! This essay structure is a suggestion and not an obligation. Hope that helps!

It doesn’t matter whether your conclusion agrees with the two paragraphs presenting one argument or the third paragraph presenting the counter. The important thing is that your opinion given in your conclusion is connected to what you have said prior. Is that clear?
@@SMASHEnglish oh, gotcha. One last thing: this being a formal/neutral essay, would it be fine not to use contractions?
@@aldosimonetti9581 Yes. You should not use contractions.
Toby, I'm about to do FCE this saturday. I have a question, can the first paragraph of the essay be only 2 sentences?
Of course it can!
Hi Toby, why did you use ¨disadvantage TO having¨ and not ¨OF having¨ in the first paragraph?
OF would be fine too. Both are OK 🥳🥳
Does anyone have some personal tips how to practice and improve your writing?
It was very very clean to understand, thank you i will subscribe me to your chanel.
Excellent! Welcome to the channel, Vicente!
Can you pleaseeeeeee do the same for C2 essay? It seems to me as if noone in the world knows how to structure the Cambridge C2 essay. Do you?
Haha! The C2 essay is very different to the B2 essay. I personally would structure it like this:
Then I will move onto C1, and then finally C2... so don't hold your breath for C2 material 😂
thank you
You're welcome
tnaks a lot
I couldn't follow the logic. Before writing an essay, we choose our inclination towards the subject (agree or disagree). only then we start writing our points. we can contrast the ideas in the paragraphs to highlight that despite other angles we still strongly support our chosen track, but dedicating a separate paragraph for the contrast idea makes me scattered. If I write a whole new paragraph about something that contradicts my inclinations presented beforehand then what I'm agreeing to at all. Isn't in an essay we should strongly disagree or agree on an issue represented?
You should also be able to contrast that with an opposing point of view, hence the paragraph in disagreement.
Thanks for your reply. By saying that, we should include in the contradictory paragraph that (somehow) these contrasting statements exist but are rather feeble. 😅 or should we make them weaker at some point to not deny our pre-chosen track?
how about writing conclusion in this way : As far as i'm concerned......(only writing my opinion)
i have exam tomorrow.. thank you in advance for this information.
That's fine. BUT it must be connected in some way to what you said in your 3 body paragraphs. This is why I use the passive modal reporting verb with a concessive clause... it links every aspect of the essay together in the conclusion.
@@SMASHEnglish i was on exam yesterday and i smashed it yeah! But wrote too little email (less than 140)
Do i have to write a tittle?
Is it a must to have between 140-190words in the essay.I can't control the number of word I always go more than 200 words.I am still 13.plz help.😢
You can write more! Just make sure you stay relevant!
Thank you so much sir... It helped me a lot. Is it ok if the essay has 201 words... my essay always passes 190 words and always bother me... :( :( :( :( :(
Don't worry about it. Just make sure you don't include any irrelevant information.
@@SMASHEnglish Ok sir thank you so much. I feeling better now.
@toby you are wrong (the thing I observed in many of your videos) . You MUST include your opinion in introduction . You mostly skip it
@@Nana-nr1pv hello!
I have a video on that here: How Examiners Mark Your B2 First Essay (Cambridge FCE Writing Exam)

As far as I’m concerned, it isn’t grammatically correct to use 'firstly' without using 'secondly.' This often indicates a mistake in organization, doesn’t it?
Not really
In the sample test essay writing part I did in my English class, I agreed in all the three prompts. I didn't give a contrast idea in any of them and my teacher said it was good and gave me 20 points. But now you are saying we must give a contrast idea.
I'm confused
Who do I have to trust? 😂🤔
Help me pls
Haha trust us both!
You don't HAVE to include a contrasting idea. I suggest it as it's an easy way to include concessive clauses and contrasting linking expressions. However it is certainly not mandatory!
This essay structure is a suggestion and not an obligation. Hope that helps!
@@SMASHEnglish yeah it helps. Thank you for the answer. Now I know I have to improve my comprehension and listening skill 😂
I love u
Is it necessary paragraph 4 to be in contrast to paragraphs 2and 3?
I feel dizzy watching. Why does he move so much?
I have issues
How were your marks? :)
